2014 Forest Hills Drive is the third studio album by American rapper J. Cole. It was released on December 9, 2014, by ByStorm Entertainment, Columbia Records, Dreamville Records and Roc Nation.
Recording sessions took place over the whole year, while the production on the album was primarily handled by Cole himself, along with several others such as Illmind, Vinylz, Phonix Beats and Willie B. It was announced three weeks before its release and had very little marketing, with no singles or promotion taking place prior to its release. The album was supported by four singles: "Apparently", "Wet Dreamz", "No Role Modelz" and "Love Yourz".
2014 Forest Hills Drive received generally positive reviews from critics who admired its ambitious concept, production and lyrics. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 353,000 copies in its first week. As of September 2015, the album has sold one million copies in the United States. The album was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in May 2019.
The album won Album of the Year at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards, and Top Rap Album at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards. It was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards. The single "Apparently" was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
2014 Forest Hills Drive debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling a total of 371,000 copies, with 353,000 copies consisting of whole album sales and the remaining 17,000 copies determined based on individual song sales and streaming data. This is a tracking change that was implemented by Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard in December 2014. 2014 Forest Hills Drive became the best first week sales of J. Cole's career at the time, outpacing the first week sales of his second album Born Sinner (2013), by 74,000 copies (297,000 copies). In addition to the album's sales toppling early projections by over 100,000 copies, 2014 Forest Hills Drive also broke One Direction's record for most album streams on Spotify, being streamed over 15.7 million times in its first week, compared to One Direction's 11.5 million streams. Drake later broke this record with 17.3 million streams for his mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late. In its second week, the album sold 135,000 more copies. Cole became one of only six rappers to reach number one with their first three full-length studio albums, others being Drake, Rick Ross, Nelly, DMX and Snoop Dogg. As of December 2016, the album has sold 1,240,000 copies in the United States. On May 23, 2019, 2014 Forest Hills Drive was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales, streaming and track-sale equivalents of three million units in the United States. In 2015, 2014 Forest Hills Drive was ranked as the eighth most popular album of the year on the Billboard 200.

Never heard someone praise Cole so much for his singing. He really is an underrated singer
His live performance of be free on Letterman always gives me chills
His live album is amazing too
@@theworstgeneration4406 fax so underrated
J Cole singing>Drake singing
I wouldn't say he's an amazing singer. But what he has is an incredible voice and the cadence he taps into when he sings mixed with its simplicity conveys his vulnerability incredibly well. Another great example is 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'
No Role Modelz was on repeat 24/7 in every college dorm my freshman year, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it in the rotation.
I love that I had the same experience with this
That was high school for me, always played at parties and such. Great times!
Still on repeat 🔥
Shit that was middle school for me😂 still on the rotation…to this day
sophomore year for me
There isn't an album that even comes close to how much nostalgia Forest Hills Drive gives me. Songs off this album scored so many moments of my adolescence
Yeah this album was literally my freshman and sophomore experience
growing up, my older cousins and family friends would always play cole, drake, mac, kanye, etc. around me. this album reminds me of when i was 7-8 years old, and it hits even harder now because i can relate to it more (especially 03' adolescence)... fav album of all time
Me too man it transports me to those times.

Bro I'm from the other side of the world and i feel the same that's the great thing about real music
“Wet Dreamz is a rock solid track” 💀
This album is like a bookmark in our lives. We all remember exactly when, where, and how we listened to it.

Love your dad's open-minded reactions in all of these videos. You can tell he really appreciates musicianship in every style and genre, it's awesome to see coming from someone whose parents hate hip hop music.
Right. A lot of older folks are more focused on the "bad" words so they are turned off from it. But I have noticed that once they get passed the bad words a lot of older folks come to really love hiphop.
@@calisthetics yeah mine are the same
@@calisthetics they have a point they are kind of vulgar and explicit,it has some elements which is very toxic but as said it more of a culture than just music it obviously has its flaws not like other genres don't have that type of stuff
I’m honestly jealous of Conner’s relationship with his dad. My dad is so close-minded when it comes to hip hop. I feel like if he could get past the curse words he would enjoy it
@@culverp1138 my mom is the one who put me on hiphop I was like 5yrs old rapping DMX lyrics.
Wet Dreamz and No Role Modelz were classic hip-hop songs right when they came out. Timeless and the whole album is a classic!
Have him listen to 4 Your Eyes Only! I think he’d love it, from the drums to the violins and overall production and story. Definitely word be worth it to show your dad
4 your eyes is I believe one of his best most well curated albums for a story it’s next level that album!
I second this
Easily cole’s worst album imo, but maybe I’m in the minority

Dropping a J Cole reaction on Jan 28… GOAT move 🔥
Jan 29
This album acted as a rebirth for J. Cole, he renounced the cars, jewelry, flashy clothes and truly deconstructed himself to what he is now. I always found that incredible and related to this at that point in my life. Thanks Cole. “triple platinum no features”
There’s something nostalgic about watching someone listen to the hits you grew up on for the first time and seeing them appreciate it just as much as you did… smart gig you got going on here
my exact thought !
The nostalgic feelings i get when January 28th beat starts playing… feel like I’m walking on the high school halls again

The fact that No Role Modelz is number 9 on the top 100 charts in 2022 just shows how fucken great this album is
As a storyteller, you cant help but be sucked into his songs. Wet Dreamz is unmatched due to how relatable it is literally every man on the planet, and I absolutely love seeing peoples reaction to their first time listening to it.
Great content!
This album is the definition of timeless. It’s a masterpiece. Got me through a lot and still does today.

i don't care what everybody says, this album is a classic its so important for gen z and millennials
It's grown on me a lot. Before I didn't like it, but now I do.
"Wet Dreamz" still gives me goosebumps like it's the first time I heard it. I remember hearing the line
"But right before I put it in, she flinched and grabbed it and said
I wanna get something off my mental
I can tell you a pro, but baby be gentle"
and the realization that both were virgins was too good
ik dude when i was little i would always bop this song without knowing what he’s talking bout but once i grew up i realized what he’s really talking about and that line blew my mind once i noticed what it meant (no pun intended)
ikr when i heard this song for the first time and heard those lyrics my jaw just dropped 🤣
It’s funny I laughed so hard at these bro, Shit was like a punchline
It really felt like a twist in a movie
Fun Fact: she was lying lol
Your dads reactions makes me feel like I’m listening to it for the first time again. Super cool guys
"Getting head like a coin toss, too easy"....one of my fave Cole lines...

Broo, the fact your dad said tale of 2 cities gave him kendrick vibes and that’s the beat kendrick raps over on their “Black Friday track” .. sooo wild! That’s an impressive ear.

hearing that song for the first time is amazing, going through something bad and hearing it for the first time must’ve been great. one of the most humbling songs it’s so good bruh
Same here, Cole was the first rapper I ever listened too and I remember I used to play Love Yourz on repeat.
St tropez was the one that did it for me

J Cole’s awareness alone makes his bars feel alive.

I think this has to be one of my favorite ''Dad reacts'' videos from the channel, love the way he's so down with it 😂😂
Such a beautiful and heartfelt album. You can hear the life in coles voice.
This is what separates Cole from a lot of other artists. It makes sense that Tupac was his favorite rapper. The thing that makes them stand out is the emotion you hear in their voice.
There’s just something about this album, it’s 10/10

Mac Miller is slightly overrated

Yea he had instruments live in recordings, that's why it sounds so amazing. Shout out those talented musicians.
Even though I don’t love the album as much as I did in 2014-2015, this video took me to a time when I was a down-in-the-dumps teenager and this album would help me escape and elevate. Thank you for this reaction
Genuinely think this album changed my life.

03 adolescence leaves such an impact on me. I taught a class about music and used Kendrick and j cole as my main artist and we analyzed for hours and I truly believe my students learned about life and a bit of themselves. Cole is forever in the rap-history books with this banger of a album. Get your dad to react to Nas debut-album Illmatic. It's often, if not almost always; rated as the best hiphop/rap-album of all time and according to many critics especially in later days - one of the best pieces of music in modern history. He was 19 when it flipped the rapgame on its side, including bars he wrote as young as 16.
Truly a rap-poet. If you like rap, especially 90's rap with that east-coast vibe... you are going to realize the impact this album made on EVERYTHING that came after. You can literally hear Nas in so many rappers after realizing Illmatic inspired them back in 94.
A must-listen album for sure!
Even Jay-Z...
Illmatic is so good
not to be rude but that album isn't great. great delivery and lyricism but that's about it. zero sustenance. anything from ye, earl, Kendrick, jpegmafia, etc absolutely stomp that album 10 fold.

Just discovered you guys today & these have made me appreciate artists like J Cole/Kanye/Cudi even more. They’re artists that can be digested and appreciated by all races
I've binge watched like 9 of your guys' album breakdowns in a row. He reminds me of me when I listened to these albums for the first time and how excited all of it was. Even when I was listening to Yeezus my Sophomore year of HS I felt all the emotion. Great reactions.
This brought such a huge smile to my face. The nostalgia I got from watching you dad react to tracks like Wet Dreamz and GOMD the same way I did was so awesome. I remember my buddy showing Wet Dreamz to me in gym class sophomore year (I was more of a metalhead at that point, didn't care for rap much at the time) and I've been absolutely hooked ever since. So cool to see your dad gush the same way over all these tracks.
This is genuinely one of the only albums I’ve heard that has no skips. There are a few tracks that aren’t as great but they’re still listenable, aside from that almost every track is a classic with crazy replay value

Your dad's enthusiasm for J. Cole and how he likes the way J. Cole shows vulnerability, calls for "4 your eyez only".
I remember listening to this CD in my car all the time in high school and I always thought I had a bad disc that skipped on ‘03 Adolescence in the beginning. Wasn’t till I switched to using Spotify that I realized it’s just a part of the track 😂

This is my favorite rap album all time. Todays music doesn’t come even close. Ive been listening to a lot of 70s 80s and 90s music because it feels so “real”. Cole is the closest thing we have to that. True artist.
Bro you’re gonna get so much hate from the hip hop casuals because of that, I respect your opinion tho, it’s your personal favorite, but there’s always gonna be people that say shit like “there’s like 1000 better albums, or it’s mid” but just do you bro
This album is literally art in its purest form in my eyes. A true 11/10. I find no flaws in anything and think a whole listen through is a true experience. Also, Love Yourz is the most beautiful and heartfelt song ever made imo. It pulls my heart and I always cry listening to it.
I figured why J Cole became my top 3 Artists. He is so relatable yet so informative and Loving. He doesnt tell you fake dreams or makes you feel insecure about yourself. Obviously his skills and talents as well. Another win is how he comes from real hood backgrounds but it doesn't define him, instead he's always looking to grow spiritually, emotionally and mentally.
If you enjoyed this, try Little Simz Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. That is Album of the year worthy.
It so awesome how they give there perspective on each song . Being open minded is truly the best thing
