Glad to see the appreciation for El Mañana. That's my favorite track on Demon Days too, really rides the line of melancholy-yet-upbeat in a way that's pretty unique to Gorillaz. Not to mention the bass tone is filthy, I love how it contrasts with the shimmery ambient synths. My favorite Gorillaz track is Empire Ants, which I think occupies a similar space on Plastic Beach as El Mañana does on Demon Days. I love how you described both the bass and keyboard sounds because to me it seems to fit the players’ personality/vibe (fictional band members) equally as well
With respect to the thematic of the album, I think Damon said that it's supposed to represent a full night from dusk til dawn. Being the penultimate track, the more dark and hopeless and the final track more hopeful, symbolising the rise of the sun, you can see this in the chorus that sings "Turn yourself around into the sun" in the final track.
@@kevinfromttt furthermore the tracks within the album represent the different demons that you meet throughout the day, each offering something else- as the day progresses.
I also feel a key theme for a few tracks (particularly dirty harry and monkeys head) is war, in particular the war in Afghanistan which britain had joined before the album released. The album just exudes the vibes of that time to me.
I honestly think DD might be the greatest album of our time. Its a perfect window into the era. You could listen to this album in 2079 and it would still be an absolute banger. Masterpiece.
I’m so so happy you guys did this album. This album was there for me during some really tough mental health struggles and the last 2 tracks always set me right. Between this and Plastic Beach, Gorillaz are like medicine for the modern world. Great job guys!!
Oh my GOD. this album is ICONIC. also, 1st album I ever bought with my own money. I adore that you guys did this. This album seriously means so much to me. I am so giddy right now waiting to listen to this.
As a fan since the beginning, it's wonderful to see a first reaction like this. Dad is also absolutely correct about seeing them live and I suggest everyone check out a show. I caught two shows in TO and QC for the Humanz tour and they were revelatory. Your comments about El Manana strike home because Damon had jumped down onto the barricade to sing that song to the crowd. Since I was on the front rail, he was literally holding my hand when singing the melody. Shit was fucking amazing.
Everytime I come back to Demon Days and Plastic Beach I'm completely speechless because they just are too good to be true. The way they perfectly and seamlessly weave together these different genres...it is GENIUS.
I don’t think Danger Mouse gets enough credit for his executive production on this album. His trademark sound and arrangement can be felt ALL over this joint. He is equally as important as Damon was!
Absolutely! Damon saw something really special in him, otherwise he wouldn't have chosen him to be the producer. What a perfect musical match it turned out...wish they would do something together again
@@cssneil forgot to mention that, but yes I'm aware! Both that album and the following one, produced by Tony Visconti, are fantastic. Love The Good The Bad & The Queen ❤
It’s SO thrilling to see someone with a fresh set of eyes get so excited about what has been such a formative album for me! Been jamming it for 17 years now
I recently went to a Gorillaz concert here where I live, Curitiba (Brazil). And it was surreal, Damon and the band bring a really good vibe. All this mix of elements and styles that Kevin mentions are much more present live. For me it was like a dream to see one of my favorite bands come to play in my city.
Was waiting for you guys to start doing Gorillaz, just such a good fit for the channel. Looking forward to the Plastic Beach listen, it’s my favorite as well and just (like most of their music) so ahead of its time - also thematically regarding mass consumption and our environment
Good comment. Demon Dayz also touches on heavy themes like the Iraq war, enviromentalism and industrialization. I don't think that Im alone in feeling this album captures the major "vibe" of early 2000s. And to some degree I feel very nostalgic to that era.
This album is such a masterpiece. I’m happy that your dad liked ‘El mañana’ so much, I suppose the feeling which he was trying to describe was a mix of melancholy and nostalgia. It’s my favorite song on this album. I remember seeing the cover art *everywhere* when it released. To me, this album does a great job at encapsulating the feeling of the early 2000s so it will always have a very special place in my heart. Cheers :^)
One of my all time favorite albums. Wore this thing out when it was first released and it's still in rotation in my playlists. My faves are Dirty Harry, DARE, Don't Get Lost in Heaven and Demon Days.
Man this was the first album my parents ever bought me. I was 9 years old and remember listening to this on a diskman over and over. I got into metal pretty early on and haven't really revisited Gorillaz. White light was my favourite track and I have distinct memories of laying in bed in the middle of the night whispering "white light" to myself.
@@WilliamThorup it's odd because my parents aren't really into music. I think they knew I liked the feel good Inc music video so just got me the album. But yeah I do have good parents.
@@benkeates5396 When you say it shouldn't have been a part of Gorillaz it makes me assume that your problem with the album is a problem many people have with it. That problem was that fans didn't like how little 2D there was. But Gorillaz always had guest artists featured on like 1/3 of the songs in every album; so they simply took an already established element from their previous work and turned it up to eleven. So it doesn't make sense to me when people complain about Humanz having so little 2D when that was the whole point of the album, according to Damon Albarn himself.

I have loved Gorillaz since the very day they released Clint Eastwood into the world in 2002. I heard it once late late at night, thought 'that's the weirdest thing I've ever heard' and then it was stuck in my head for the following days until I had to ask around as to who it was. Lucky one of my friends knew and I've been obsessed ever since. I went to see them live a few years ago and it ranks up there in my top 5 live performances ever, such an awesome stage show! I am absolutely thrilled that not only is Albarn still making new music under this brand 20 years later, but that they're reaching such a fantastic, diverse and *young* audience! I'm approaching 50, and my 15 year old nephew loves them and wears Demon Days tee shirts! :D Now I have to go listen to this in full!
When you said Plastic Beach was your favorite and Demon Days second, it’s the same for me. These two albums felt so cohesive and it felt like you were going on a journey when you listened to the them all the way through.
When I was 7 my parents kind of limited my music output, to various things. I usually, would just have to listen to things that my parents were listening to. This was a problem for me when I was young, but as I got older my taste in music matured through the the punk, R&B, jazz, rock and others. The first album that I ever bought on a cd, was Demon Days by the Gorillaz. I lived on this album and now I get emotional every time I hear this albums. I was 20 when I saw them live. I’m 23 there now. Live goes fast when you live through sound and being audiophile
El manana is my favourite from this album, it evokes all the feelings and I actually think if you watch the video for it too it really emphasises those feelings… definitely haunting
This is still Gorillaz best album hands down, as I've grown older I've come to appreciate and love plastic beach just as much as demon days but this will be their magnum opus. Gorillaz will forever be my #1 band
Feel the same - Plastic Beach grows on me more and more, there’s a lot of gold in there and I’m not sure if any track will envelope me in warm comforting bass as much as Stylo… but nothing compares to Demon Days. Not a single wrong step. It’s perfect from start finish whilst throwing all convention out the window… Magnum Opus indeed.
Fire Coming Out of the Monkeys Head is my personal favorite track on the album, it’s not a banger that I would listen in my car or at a function I.e. Kids with Guns, Dirty Harry, and every planet but it’s definitely the deepest song on the album is the main reason this album is goated for me
The important thing about 'El Mañana' is that it is used within the story of the band as a central storytelling device in the video clip basically being the story of Noodle being attacked and on the next album 'On Melancholy Hill' served as a sequel of sorts.. I would argue that it is a big song and was a single I believe just is more of a major fan song than a mainstream hit same with On Melancholy Hill. Also I'd consider the last three songs a trilogy of sorts.
This first time hearing Feel Good Inc. is such a time. I’m glad Kev loved it! I completely agree that the rap incorporated with a pop/funk/synth feel to it is phenomenal. Love your videos fellas!

This album could have come out today, and no one would have bat an eye. It manages to feel timeless and nostalgic at the same time. Also, nice hair cut Kevin :)

this was one of my favourite so far, this album is so much fun. Would be cool to see Plastic Beach too. I've also thought for a while that cage the elephant could be really fun, maybe starting with "tell me i'm pretty" since I think it has a lot of elements that sound quite radiohead inspired, "how are you true" sounds very inspired. Visiting the 2008 self titled Cage the Elephant afterwards would be amazing. You guys have been such a great vehicle to enjoy nostalgic albums and hear really knowledgable perspectives on songs I thought I'd explored fully.

@@xXArtimixXx a desert island song. Someone says, "Pick 10 songs to live the rest of your life with," and that's on the list. I wonder what my other 9 would be. My guess would be:
Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band - Cosmia
Current 93 - Larkspur and Lazarus (Live at the Teatro Ibérico, Lisbon, Portugal)
Opeth - Godhead's Lament
King Crimson - Starless
In Gowan Ring - Orb Weavers
MF DOOM - Doomsday
Fleet Foxes - Montezuma
Gentle Giant - Proclamation
Richard Dawson - Weaver
Based opinion that empire ants is the best gorillaz song
I love how you described both the bass and keyboard sounds because to me it seems to fit the players’ personality/vibe (fictional band members) equally as well
What you said.
Great thanks Michay !
The night is darkest before dawn
I honestly think DD might be the greatest album of our time. Its a perfect window into the era. You could listen to this album in 2079 and it would still be an absolute banger. Masterpiece.
absolutely agree
I completely agree with you even though I like Plastic Beach even more, which is a testament to how great both albums are.
Dennis Hopper doing the narration for Fire will always be one of my favourite features in music
I’m so so happy you guys did this album. This album was there for me during some really tough mental health struggles and the last 2 tracks always set me right. Between this and Plastic Beach, Gorillaz are like medicine for the modern world. Great job guys!!
thanks maxx! :)
Oh my GOD. this album is ICONIC. also, 1st album I ever bought with my own money. I adore that you guys did this. This album seriously means so much to me. I am so giddy right now waiting to listen to this.
Same!
same
One of the first albums I listened to back to front. Flawless album
Same
Also I’d LOVE to see you guys do plastic beach too. I just want to see him react to Superfast Jellyfish 😂
Where were you in Quebec? We were barrier between Damon and Jeff :). What a show!
On the barrier in front of Jeff, so we must have been pretty close to each other! It absolutely was such a good show!
@@SvenBro We were lucky to see Sleeping Powder, it hasn't reappeared often :)
Same here, even though I was a little later in the beginning (like maybe 2009)
Everytime I come back to Demon Days and Plastic Beach I'm completely speechless because they just are too good to be true. The way they perfectly and seamlessly weave together these different genres...it is GENIUS.
I don’t think Danger Mouse gets enough credit for his executive production on this album. His trademark sound and arrangement can be felt ALL over this joint. He is equally as important as Damon was!
Absolutely! Damon saw something really special in him, otherwise he wouldn't have chosen him to be the producer. What a perfect musical match it turned out...wish they would do something together again
Dude dangermouse is the only producer that when I see they're attached I immediately add it to my spotify
I fucking love dangermouse, Rome is a criminally underrated album
@@noursarhan8695 If you don't know about The Good the Bad and The Queen then check it out. Another Damon Albarn project produced by Danger Mouse.
@@cssneil forgot to mention that, but yes I'm aware! Both that album and the following one, produced by Tony Visconti, are fantastic. Love The Good The Bad & The Queen ❤
This album is a masterpiece, dad’s lucky to get to experience it for the first time, I wish I could do that again.
El Manana is hands down my favorite track on this album. Just the vocals alone give me chills....
Mine too, it's so good man.
Mine too! I think it might even be my favourite gorillaz song
El mañana*
Fire Coming out of the Monkey’s Head is a masterpiece. Soooo underrated
And being narrated by Dennis Hopper doesn't hurt either😀
Fire coming out of the monkey's ass you mean ?
Watching someone listen to Feel Good Inc. for the first time is an experience in itself.
It’s SO thrilling to see someone with a fresh set of eyes get so excited about what has been such a formative album for me! Been jamming it for 17 years now
Oh is it really?! Fuckin lame
Fui no mesmo show e foi sensacional! A vibe na pedreira era surreal
Every Planet We Reach Is Dead has gotta be one of the best songs ever made
Was waiting for you guys to start doing Gorillaz, just such a good fit for the channel. Looking forward to the Plastic Beach listen, it’s my favorite as well and just (like most of their music) so ahead of its time - also thematically regarding mass consumption and our environment
looking forward to them hearing empire ants, my fav song ever!
Good comment. Demon Dayz also touches on heavy themes like the Iraq war, enviromentalism and industrialization. I don't think that Im alone in feeling this album captures the major "vibe" of early 2000s. And to some degree I feel very nostalgic to that era.
And then maybe Humanz? Or is it too heavy?
This album is such a masterpiece.
I’m happy that your dad liked ‘El mañana’ so much, I suppose the feeling which he was trying to describe was a mix of melancholy and nostalgia. It’s my favorite song on this album.
I remember seeing the cover art *everywhere* when it released. To me, this album does a great job at encapsulating the feeling of the early 2000s so it will always have a very special place in my heart.
Cheers :^)
Holy shi same for me! Im really glad there are other El Manana enjoyers, my fav on the album
El Manana enjoyers are bayzed gigachads
Sane for me. Based El Manana enjoyer.
This really does encapsulate the feeling of the early 2000s. Also El Mañana is my favorite track from this project too
el mañana is my favorite song off of the album, along with november has come. both genuinely deserve more recognition
White light was my favourite track and I have distinct memories of laying in bed in the middle of the night whispering "white light" to myself.
dude this is scary relatable. You had wonderful parents.
@@WilliamThorup it's odd because my parents aren't really into music. I think they knew I liked the feel good Inc music video so just got me the album. But yeah I do have good parents.
This was a really pleasant surprise. I absolutely love Gorillaz. Don’t sleep on the self titled though, a lot of gems on there
their first three albums are flawless!
@@dobity8370 they put out three of some of the best albums ever, then made humanz 😭😭
@@RhysGBiv Humanz gets so much undeserved hate. It's really good.
@@tobeornottobe5611 no it really isn't, it should've really been a separate thing from gorillaz entirely

Demon Days is still my favorite from them, which says a lot. It's the most complete album they've made.
The timing on this is insane, I just relistened to the album this week

El Manana always hits me in the feels for some reason it's a song that always makes me feel bittersweet or... Something
well watch the musicvideos to it and you know why ^^ but in the right order pls Feel Good inc than el Manana
Bittersweet, melancholic. Damons trademark, no one does it better
The lyrics are very depressing, but the beat feels like there might be hope.
I feel like El Mañana belongs on every 'crying songs' playlist ever.
@@eyeballtickler upon melancholy hill...
When you said Plastic Beach was your favorite and Demon Days second, it’s the same for me. These two albums felt so cohesive and it felt like you were going on a journey when you listened to the them all the way through.
Both are absolutely brilliant.
I like Demon Days the best but no complaints to anyone who disagrees
When I was 7 my parents kind of limited my music output, to various things. I usually, would just have to listen to things that my parents were listening to. This was a problem for me when I was young, but as I got older my taste in music matured through the the punk, R&B, jazz, rock and others. The first album that I ever bought on a cd, was Demon Days by the Gorillaz. I lived on this album and now I get emotional every time I hear this albums. I was 20 when I saw them live. I’m 23 there now. Live goes fast when you live through sound and being audiophile
I absolutely love the description at the moment being "i will write the description and timestamps when i get home"
Loving the honesty in that 😂
Demon Days is still an incredible masterpiece. One of those rare moments where everything comes together perfectly.
El manana is my favourite from this album, it evokes all the feelings and I actually think if you watch the video for it too it really emphasises those feelings… definitely haunting
This is so genuine, I love how well these two can communicate what they are hearing
Kids with Guns, Dirty Harry, and every planet but it’s definitely the deepest song on the album is the main reason this album is goated for me
cherry on the top so to say. Mostly because it brings the whole story of the album together.
You mean Fire Coming Out of the Monkeys Ass?
I love that story. The visuals for this done are amazing as well.
Let’s jist appreciate how goated the background vinyls are
This album is one of my favorites of all time. Musical and lyrical perfection.
This first time hearing Feel Good Inc. is such a time. I’m glad Kev loved it! I completely agree that the rap incorporated with a pop/funk/synth feel to it is phenomenal. Love your videos fellas!
I fkn love listening to you guys! It’s great 2 hear ppl as passionate about every single piece of a song and not just parts or sections! Great job breaking the tunes down boys
This album is incredible. And I saw their concert for the first time this year, and it was perfect with all the instruments and singers!
This album is my earliest memory of music. Early 2000s in the UK, I think that time and place brought to fruition a completely unique sound of beautiful misery.
Would love to see you guys react to Burial - Untrue, falls into the same space as Demon Days for me. love x
I’d love it if they did Burial, wonder if Connor is aware of him, no idea how he was received in North America. Demon Days is in my top ten. Today was a good day.
Burial is the GOAT producer
bro your first memories of music are exact same as mine, so beautiful hearing someone else describe the precise upbringing, listening to this trippy shit rn, thinking about playing future garage around early hours london - thanks for the throwbacks much love vro x
As a kid I uses to keep Don't get lost in Heaven into Demon days on repeat on my little cd player to help me sleep at night. The genuine calm these tracks instilled is legendary.
It’s one of my favourite two tracks running into one another on any album. It’s pure bliss.
that strikes a huge nostalgia cord!!! wow!
So great to see this album on your channel! As an English teen, Gorillaz was a house party staple. Finally seeing them live next month. Love you guys !
The way they just vibe next to eachother is hilarious.
Connor, you gotta show your dad some of those Gorillaz bites cartoon shorts from that era. They really help show the characters and their personalities within the group / band. Even that one mtv cribs episode lol
It’s one of the few perfect albums that you start and don’t skip a single track til the end. Everything just flows together so good
I really do wish he had the music video for El Manana playing while listening to it, the MV elevates the song to a whole other level.
I felt like this album needed a little bit of context. This was released at the peak of the Iraq war.
This album could have come out today, and no one would have bat an eye. It manages to feel timeless and nostalgic at the same time.
Also, nice hair cut Kevin :)
Yeah really nice
This is the album that got me into listening to full albums tbh. At the time my ADHD 17-year old brain didn't know you could listen to 50 minutes of music like that and have it feel so rich and entertaining. Goated project

I bought this album at target, on CD, based solely off the artwork a long time ago, and I'll never regret that.

I just put up a framed poster of this album cover on my wall and this popped up on my feed. very nostalgic album for me and one of the main albums that got me into music in general at a young age. love seeing your reaction hearing it for the first time. awesome video
What this album did to Mexico back then can't be described. People just loved Gorillaz and the whole concept. They comeback all the time because people just won't stop going to their concerts.
So happy that you guys finally did this album!!! Gotta be one of my favorite albums!
this was one of my favourite so far, this album is so much fun.
