Back when my Dad trucked (stopped at 39-40 years old, 20 years on the road) and I went with him I’d always hope he’d Hook up to the reefers just because I thought the engine on it was so cool but now I know the benefits of it, when I get my cdl/class 1 I’m gonna haul reefers and hopefully my goal is by the time I’m 20 years old I wanna owner operate a 2000-2003 Kenworth W900L or Freightliner Classic XL cause those are the trucks my Dad ran and I have good memories in them such as helping him polish the chrome, install the chrome toggle extensions with him, install the red and purple interior lights and the Chicken/Marker Lights. Keep on Trucking Man!”

That's the first time I've seen one like that, I worked for JB Hunt on a Walmart account ,hauling to Walmart and Sam's clubs in the north east, our reefers had dividers that dividing the reefer into 3 sections and we had to set all 3 sections, depending on what we were hauling
I might look into getting my cdl. Right now I work for an auto parts store and I love it when they schedule me to drive!

Another great video JJ. One of the main benefits of the reefer division is our main commodity is Food & Pharmaceuticals. If and when the economy takes a downturn, this division remains stable. If the economy comes to a halt, the building supplies/ construction needs stop. Which limit the flatbedders. Same with dry van to a degree. People stop buying non essential items, resulting in more trucks & less Frieght, dropping rate per mile. However, humans have to eat and take meds.

nice vedio jj i just switch from dry van to reefer a year to run a dedcated but nice thing i did not have to start with a new comany cause my trucking has 3 diff trucking comanys we do dry van reefer and flat bed plus i got few more cents per mile going on reefer plus i done reefer in the past but i alway done reeefer on dedcated account not over the road but this one iam on now most of it is candy and ice cream but we also do good share of national freight i always enjoy reefer more less stressfull sure it has its downfalls like going out of ur way for washouts and when unit breaks down you have to get fixed but i still love the reefer better

Enjoy this video!!! Great tutorial for drivers who may not have any experience in reefer hauling!!!! My is: you made a comment about the reefer drivers having to make a double pull up while fueling their reefer tanks do to the distance apart; Why don't someone come up with an extention hose that could be connected to the driverside pump at fuel stops so it would solve that issue??? kinda like how tankers put fuel into the ground with a hose but have it where it's kinda like slinky material where it can expand and retract so drivers could place them in their tool box after each use??? or my second though was carrying an extra jug of some sort to where when you start fueling your P-side tank then you could fill the jug an take it back to reefer tank an fill (with some sort of funnel)while fueling DST then finish fueling the D-side that way you don't have to do a double pull up??? IDK just wondering does that sound to far fetched????

last one an I'm done; or the trailer makers could build a tube that stay on trailer perminantly where it extend up closer to the nose of the trailer for fueling but after fueling could be unhooked an put away inside a tube just like on tanker trucks????

kinda like when you buy def in the jug out of the store and then you have to screw the funnel on the jug to put into def tank; but for fuel pump so you could extended it back to the reefer unit without pulling up???

I was going to ask about electric too. Are there battery powered reefer units at all? Intuitively SLA batteries must be much better economy than diesel, and you could get some tax free power if you add regenerative trailer braking or solar panels for the trailer roof...
Not that I've seen. They actually can be plugged in for long term storage, but for OTR, not that I've seen. The regenerative breaking is a good idea, and getting power from the truck alternator while it's running may be an idea, but solar panels would not be 100% reliable in the snow, bad weather or overnight. Recharging would be OK for local routes where the truck is at a terminal overnight, but not feasible for OTR. Batteries are very heavy too, which reduces the amount of cargo we can carry.
Maybe one day they'll figure something out.
What kind of refrigerant is in one of those?
You now have to have a tanker endorsement if you hall storage totes for liquid in a dry van or refrigerator van.
Yep, and I have that endorsement. Prime requires it for that reason. Although, I haven't hauled anything like that yet.

I've hauled for Mars, Nestle and Hershey. They usually give free samples, too 😁

The answer to both is yes.
There are some overnight runs and Wally World is notorious for the 3am delivery which is nuts. But, for 1, its not all the time. 2, as a lease op, you can turn down any load.
I tend to take the early am loads especially if I can overnight park there. That way I can wake up and pull right in. It's a couple of hours earlier than I wake up anyway and the $ is usually good.
I really don't like the overnights. I'll take them if they pay really well and turn them down if they don't or if I'm not feeling it.

I haul reefer and I drive around the clock. Normal to get a 2am appointment to drop off and then normal to have a pickup at 10am... Normal to drive all night...
Why?
Because many of the grocery distribution centers need to get the reefer trucks unloaded before the day trucks come to pick up to deliver.
One reason why reefer delivery is at night and early mornings is because the receiver wants to handle unloading when outside temps are low.
What happens if you are hauling grocery items both Frozen food and Refrigerated food in the same load? How do you keep them separated
They won't ship them together.
I want a trailer for storage. Should I get a reefer or a dry box? Someone please advise me.
Sorry for the delay. For basic storage, a dry van will do the trick. If you don't need it to be mobile, then a CONEX Container may be a less expensive option.
@@JJtheTrucker Got a dry box for a total of $2500 and delivered. A blessing indeed. Great condition with new doors good wood floors and wood on all the walls. One strip of wood down the ceiling center. I left it elevated for storage underneath. Thinking of insulating it and using solar for an A/C in it or maybe just a fan. Storing furniture and glass. Needs to be cool. The containers (Conex) were not as good. I’m very happy. Thank you for responding. If you know anything about insulating them please advise.

JJ, how loud is that reefer inside the cab of the truck, ie. sleeper? Is it easy to sleep with when running? Safe travels...
You can definitely hear it but what's weird is how earily quiet it is when you have a dry load and it's not running. It's almost is like a white noise machine that you get used to. It also drowns out all the other truck stop noises.

That might be just a smidge beyond my expertise LOL. But I would leave the Thermo King in there for a built-in air conditioner and Heating unit. 😂
Are the reefer settings password protected so no one else can change the settings? Anyone can walk by while you are sleeping and push the on/off switch... Any measures taken to prevent that?
They can do that, but they don't. Truckers don't mess with each other unless provoked, and even then...
On Prime trailers, Prime has a satellite connection to them to monitor their settings and fuel levels. If the settings are changed, the unit stops or it gets down to 1/4 of a tank they start sending Qualcomm messages to the Omnitracs and my phone, over and over until the issue is resolved.
no, the keypads are out in the open. for the most part they are left alone and all is well. not to mention if you do get caught you are facing felony charges tampering with interstate commerce. i have seen carriers charge the cost of replacement of the contents to the guilty party. almost every temp controlled carrier has some sort of remote control system built into the units. this allows them to set the run cycles temps and monitor the freight carefully. many even have shutdown override should somebody shut the unit down they can remotely restart it regardless of where the power switch sits. drivers usually fill the tanks in the evening and the morning to avoid the dreaded 2 am "get up and fill the tank" phone call
Quick question JJ ,I have 10 Months experience OTR I only drove Dry Van,I’m planning to join Prime Inc next year January so do you think I should go out with a Mentor or No..so just I could catch up with the Reefer & APU,when I pick up a Load so I could know what’s the right temperature for for the Load and to run the APU.. Do You Think Prime Inc is going to give me mentor just for 2 or 3 weeks..
That's a really good question. Instead of that though, ask to team with someone. That way you get full pay (actually higher than solo pay) and someone to show you the ropes. Whenever you're ready to go on your own, let them know and they'll drop you at a terminal to pick up a truck.
I prefer dry vans but in the wind I prefer reefer because it's heavier

Jeff is right about the staring and stopping. That part takes a couple of days to get used to. I'm so used to it now I don't even notice.

How is it sleeping in the sleeper when pulling a refer. Do they put in extra sound proof on the back of the truck.
It's not bad. Takes maybe 3 days to get used to it. Then it's like a white noise machine that drowns out everything else. Almost hard to sleep when it's NOT running lol.

if i was to join prime as owner operator, would they put me in a position where i dont make enough money in the week to cover all costs? do they gurantee youll always be postive at the end of the week
They wouldn't intentionally put you in that situation and they do everything they can to keep you out of that, but there are no guarantees. I took time off but I still needed to pay my truck payment, permits and other fixed costs and I ended up in the negative. Sometimes that happens. Good thing is they let you go into the neg. I didn't have to put out the cash. The very next week I grossed 8K which more than paid the negative and gave me a good chunk of change. It's an up and down world out here. There are risks being owner op but also good rewards.
I forgot to mention, there is 1 guarantee. They guarantee that you average at least $1/mile averaged out over time. It's such a small amount, it's never even come in to play for me. I'm at $1.80/mile so far this year.
What exactly is reefer fuel? Is it just a lower quality diesel, and can the unit be run off shore power?
It's the same diesel but it's not taxed. Comes from the same pump and everything.
There are Reefers out there, like the ones thst connect to the intermodal trailers thst can be run off of shore power, but not these ones.

@@nbarrager reefer fuel is capped at a certain amount, i think 50 gallons, so you wouldn't be able to fill up two 80 gallon tanks.
Hey man, do you get a normal sleep schedule with reefer trucking? Im about to get into the game and im down to reefer and van. Also, did/do you enjoy Prime Inc overall?
It depends on how you like to run tho gs and if you're company or lease.
As a lease (owner /op), I get to have a say in the loads I want. I choose no overnight loads and for the most part my sleep schedule is fairly regular (within a few hours).
And yes, Prime has been wonderful. My 2 year anniversary is coming up. They make this job so easy!
How often does the reefer unit need fueling?
That depends on what setting it's at and what the outside temp is. It's a 24 gallon tank and it's yet to run out on me before my tractor needs to be fueled.
My last load was 42 degrees with a 5 degree variance. It went through 1/4 of a tank in the 3 day trip.
Prime used to have larger tanks but felt they weren't needed since you're fueling up the tractor anyway. They opted for the weight savings so we could haul more freight instead, which means more $$$ in our pockets.

They try to do it at 45 mph. Sometimes when freight is low, I'll find that I gotta book it a little more, but being governed at 65,ive never even been close to being late.

Check with Prime. They may have some 2014s left. They keep their trailers for only 5 years, then sell them.
