  • What are all of those clocks we truckers need to follow? What's the 70 hour clock? The 14 hour clock? The 11 hour clock? The 8 hour clock? Why so many??? How do you get time back? What are recaps? All this and more are answered here!

      Canadian split is better. In Canada once you’ve done your 8 you have your full 13 driving back. You will have to take the other 2 hours at some point during the day either in 30 min breaks or all at once. In the US you only get what hours you day left from the day before.

    Outstanding! I had a clear understanding of the whole 8, 11 and 14 hours service time concept but I hadn't really seen an ELD in operation the way you showed it. I hadn't really thought to research it, so that was a nice bonus. But what had been confusing me (and I've seen a few other explanations on it) was recaps! Everything I've seen on the subject just confused the hell out of me even more. And then there was this. It made so much sense man! A bell rang in my noggin when you said the bottom day falls off the clock when midnight hits, and bingo... it all made sense. Thanks for the very clear explanation, now maybe I won't look so incompetent when I get in my trainers truck, Lol.

    You can also use PC to be smart about making a delivery if you were turned away at a receiver. I would have a pick up at 7am and it delivered at 1am. I would drive my whole clock and get to the receiver and get turned away. So I would find a truck stop nearby and about 30 minutes to appt time I would PC to the receiver

    • @JJtheTrucker
      @JJtheTrucker  Před 3 lety +5

      Yep, because since you arrived on your clock initially, you have "advanced the load" as far as it can be advanced. This means you can drive away and back to the receiver using PC as you are no longer advancing the load.
      Great point.

    Trucks in Europa, don't have personal conveyance time. There are 3 time settings: 1 driving 2 short break (after 4.5hr) and 3 is sleeping time.
    That is why some truckers have bikes or motorbikes with them. Driving a truck without clocking or a e-log ( in EU called driverscard ) is punishable with money in 2 ways. 1 ticket for the driver and 1 for the company your working for. Only the company pays the ticket price times 4, example 120 driver and 480 company.
    Short break is 45min. Every short AND sleeping break, which is too shirt, is considerd als NO break at all.

    Thank u

    • @JJtheTrucker
      @JJtheTrucker  Před 4 lety +1

      Technically, no. You want to avoid set times because things never take the same amount of time. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes at smaller shippers, but larger shippers may take longer.
      And when the truck moves, you'll need to select Yard Move anyway, so that logs the necessary (and real) time used.

    Great explanation of the hours of service. I used to drive in the 70's when timekeeping was a lot simpler. So, when she started talking about all the clocks, I was a little confused.
    There are some minut points I'd like to add. Drivers are supposed to take their 30-minute break before the 8-hour clock runs out. DOT states your break must be taken "within" your 8-hours. So, starting your day at 8 a.m. means taking a break no later than 3:30 p.m. Also, "on-duty" is defined as any work, including commuting to and from the job. Although there is no way to enforce this, drivers should keep in mind that they could be questioned about their drive-time to work.
    Thanks again for a great video!

    Question, you were saying the only way to reset your 14 hour on duty and 11 hour driving is for a 10 hour reset. So, if I drive 10 hours, still have 3 hours left on my on duty and start my 10 hour reset, will that 14 hours reset? Or, do I have to add those 3 hours still on the 14 hour clock to my 10 hour reset?

      Good question. Fortunately, no. The 10 hours can be off duty and/or Sleeper Berth.
      The Sleeper Berth is only required when doing a split. Such as an 8/2 split. The 8 hours needs to be in the Sleeper Berth. The smaller number can be off duty and/or Sleeper.

    this is my first clock video and its anwsered so mank fking questions i had. I guess the 34 hour reset is frowned upon if you use it early by driving hard everyday in the 8 week period. Eventually that is what I would want to do after getting some conditioning underneath my belt. Running shorter loads gives you a smaller work week but inevitably you'll need to reset to keep your profits up. Especially if you're a company driver getting paid by the mile and not just the load. Does that sound right?

    • @JJtheTrucker
      @JJtheTrucker  Před 3 lety +2

      It does, but you have to keep in mind, some days will be naturally short on hours. Specifically delivery and pick up days. A lot of off duty time when at a shipper or receiver saves your clock and let's you build back up without needing a reset. That's the advantage of the short "day hopper" loads.

    Do you get time added back on to your total time? Or is it considered off the clock when they are loading and unloading your truck. How does the time on the driving time work when you are sitting and having your truck loaded/unloaded?

    • @JJtheTrucker
      @JJtheTrucker  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, the total amount of time you were on duty 8 days ago will get added back to your clock at midnight (the 9th day).
      As for sitting at the shippers /receivers, there are various thoughts on that. Local guys tend to stay "on duty" but for the most part, otr drivers go off duty. We can go into our sleepers and watch TV, play Xbox or even take a nap, so why not save our on duty time for when we're actually working?

    • @ashlieneevel9671
      @ashlieneevel9671 Před 4 lety +1

      JJ is right you log that as sleeper berth when you're getting loaded or unloaded but I show 20 min on duty time as either loading or unloading before I go to sleeper berth. Your logs need to show some sort of activity. If it was drop and hook I personally log on duty not driving with a check in notation for about 2-5 minutes then ten minutes for a pretrip on my new trailer I'm picking up and nothing for the trailer I'm dropping other drivers do it differently. Technically though whenever you are performing any work related task you are supposed to show yourself in an on duty status so technically you should log on duty not driving for checking in at the guard shack then say you go to the shipping office next you technically should log on duty for that then log on duty when you drop your trailer then on duty again when you pick up a new one and then on duty again when you check out with your paperwork but nobody does that because it would eat up your entire clock
