  • Split Sleeper Berth explained the easy way!!
    Chris Josten will describe how to run your hours of service and DOT clock using the Split Sleeper Berth Provision and will also explain how professional drivers can use it to their benefit when calculating their available drive hours on their records of duty status.
    He will go over the 7 and 3 split, and the 8 and 2 split, along with the FMCSA regulations on how these splits must be used.

    To think I thought I was just starting to understand 😂 now I’m more confused

    You have to give the clock exactly what it needs. It needs 10 hours. The only ways to break that up is, 2 and 8 hours, and 3 and 7 hours. The small portion (2,3) can be done in off dury, sleeper berth, or even personal conveyance if need be, because DOT doesnt expect you to only be sleeping while doing the small portion, therefore you can be in off duty or even PC. However they do expect you to sleep during the 7 or 8 hour shift therefore they expect it to be sleeper berth only, because sleeper berth is not just a function on the tablet, its a location inside the truck (anything behind the driver and passenger seat) and of course in DOT's eyes, why would you move if your sleeping.. thats why you cant use personal conveyance or off duty when youre doing the big portion (7,8)... you also cannot use like 6 and 4 hours or 5 and 5 hours to do a split, because they expect you to have 7 or 8 hours of sleep, not just 5 or 6. .
    Now, the clock only needs 2 hours or 3 hours to start off, anything more than 2 hours or 3 hours is a waste, in the sense that if you go down for 2 hours and 38 minutes, you will only receive the 2 hours from that, or if you go down for 5 hours, then you only get 3 hours from it. Because it only needs 2 or 3 hours and thats all. Likewise if you need only 7 hours and you go down for 7 hours and 45 minutes, you only get 7, same with the 8 hour portion. Never give it more than it needs, but dont fall short either. If you need 7 hours, but you only get 6 hours and 58 minutes, you just lost it and have to start it all over again..(If youre doing the big portion first, but fall short of the 7 hours, then it will automatically give yiu 3 hours out of that time)
    Also, it doesnt matter if you do the big portion (7,8) or the small portion (2,3) first. They can be done in either order, as long as a total of 10 hours is complete.
    If you're doing a full 10 hour break by itself, then you may be in off duty, personal conveyance, and sleeper berth, because DOT doesnt know exactly what part of that 10 hours youre driving or sleeping, thats why you can be in various duty statuses.
    Theres more to it, but hopefully that simplifies it a bit... also correct me if im wrong lol

      If I were ruler. I'd have the clock pause everything I'm not driving. 8 hr instead of 10. And 24 hr resets. 34s are mentally brutal to me, because I'm far from home and spend it in the truck usually sleeping too much.

      @georgeperkins4171 haha yeah it's crazy man, unfortunately it's what we get to follow lol. I'm an orientation specialist and I get to explain this all the time haha. Keep up the good work man. Just pay attention and it'll come to you :)

    What was explained to me by my logs department is that after 2 hours the rest of the time is irrelevant but still pauses your 14 where you stopped it and extends your day.. but the second part has to be the 7 or 8 hours.. I tried to do 5.25 and 4.75 and it went into violation so I had to have them edit the time 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Elementary word problem: if Johnny drove for 5 hours, took his half hour break, and then slept for 7 hrs and 3 mins; would Johnny be allowed to continue to drive and how long? 😂😂😂😂😂. Also how many hours could Suzy drive if she didn’t have her class a cdl and was just johnnys wife?

    What happens if you go over 7,8 ..I know if you take 10;you reset the whole clock ..
    But if you go over 10 can you still use the 8 and 2 split to extend your 14?
    The 7/3 and 8/2 are minimum so you could take 12 in sb if you wanted right

    I got a notification on my ELD that I must stop driving in 15 minutes if I’m not using the sleeper birth provision but my regular clock had two hours and a half left on it. Do I disregard the notification and keep on driving I was a sleeper berth that day for over two hours.

    • @roymerrell6384
      @roymerrell6384 Před 4 měsíci

      But did you use the Google switch to put it on split sleeper birth and yes it will but you in violation til you take the 2nd part of the break once it runs over original hours you will be in red but it will clear out once you complete the second portion of the break

    • @davidpalmisano5115
      @davidpalmisano5115 Před 6 dny +1

      That would fulfill the 8hr part of the 8/2 split. You would then have to do a 2 hr sleeper to complete the break.

    If I drive 4.5 hours take a 3 hour break and drive 4 more hours and take 7 will my 14 clock reset and add more driving hours ?

    • @davidpalmisano5115
      @davidpalmisano5115 Před 6 dny

      You would get back 4.5 hrs or whatever your total on duty time was before you first paused your clock.
