At 5 years old, Young Frankenstein was the first movie I ever went to. While some of the humor went over my head, I still laughed a lot during the film and Gene Wilder became the first actor I really liked. Soon after that, I saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor (back when movies were frequently re-released in theaters). Again, I loved Wilder in that film (he's the best part of the movie). A few years later, my brother sneaked me into Blazing Saddles, against my mother's wishes. Wilder really influenced my childhood. He could take the silliest joke and time it in a way that made it seem sophisticated. A great legacy to cinema.
Trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, opposite my childhood home... a native of Milwaukee, where I've just spent a year living... and star of 3 of my favourite comedies of all time... what a legend.

I felt the exact same way. Even if it wasn't a particularly good film, if Gene was in it there was a guarantee I would burst out laughing at least once. Wonderful man, RIP.
A tad late but I totally agree with you. There was a weekend somewhere in the eighties where I had rented Young Frankenstein and a bunch of us watched it several times during that weekend. I was already far into my twenties but I'm pretty sure that Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder together with Python are my comedic upbringing. And Gene wilder was in particular extremely funny and a lovely man.
Sad loss, he was a genius in his craft. Even though we had not seen him in much recently, I still feel this great loss he has departed. He will go down as a legend.
My favourite comedy of all time. It doesn't hurt that Teri Garr was at the peak of her powers in this movie. (By 'powers' I mean her power to entrance me.)

Normally Mark goes for the obscure reference in regards to talking about an artist (example: often citing the looked-over King of Comedy as Scorcese and Deniro's best work) but this one seemed obvious and undeniable. Young Frankenstein is a comedic triumph. I saw a production of Mel Brooks's own stage adaptation of the film and it was almost as funny as the film itself. The only thing holding it back was that the main actor was no Gene Wilder.
It's hard to believe he's gone, beautiful tribute Mark.

Very saddened to read of Wilder's death, but at least he led a full life and brought a great deal of joy to a lot of people.

I love the chemistry Gene had with Richard Pryor. Maybenhim and Richard are making each other laugh in the 8th dimension. RIP Gene Wilder.

Blazing Saddles was the first good laugh I had after the 9/11 attacks. That's all I got.
