    Although HIGHLY disappointing, Batman V Superman does not deserve to go on top 10 worst movie list. I can name at least 50 worst movies. It is #1 on most disappointing movie of 2016 though.

      Kermode has put films he's disappointed in on the list before, and it's a reasonable piece of criteria. Pretty sure there was a fairly mediocre but innocuous film a few years back he included specifically because 'I expect more from these people'.

      2&3 of the prequels weren't that bad, they were fun but forgettable action films, they didn't have the magic of the originals but that's same with alot of these relaunches of old properties, like the first 2 star trek films.

      I saw the extended edition last week (I didn't see it in cinemas), and it was pretty good ! Quite long, but I really didn't find the flaws that the cinema version supposedly had.

    So, can we safely say, that there will be no Ghostbusters on that list? You know, I'm fine with that. But please, Kermode, don't ever tell us that the old routine of testing a weapon and accidentally destroying some valuable object is a "hilarious scene" and so on. Because it kinda makes me ashamed of naming you one of my favorite critics from now on.

  • @RMarsupial
    @RMarsupial Před 8 lety +19

    The only criticism I dislike on this list is your criticism of "Knight of Cups"... this idea that people who are rich (and / or get hit on by hot girls) can't have problems or issues... I've never understood that. Do you think rich people just aren't people? Do you really think loads of money would solve all your problems? It's just a really dumb criticism IMO... "First world problems" can be interesting or engaging... or what, does EVERY film have to be about some life-or-death situation, or someone who's poor, or underprivileged in SOME way?

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 Před 8 lety +8

      Of course rich people can have real problems...that doesn't mean the problems presented in that movie qualify. Often it boils down to "Oh man, my life's too easy, it's a real bummer". On the grand scheme of things, that's not that much of a problem. Not being able to afford your rent...now that's a doozy!

    • @RMarsupial
      @RMarsupial Před 8 lety +4

      Paul Dennett I haven't actually seen Knight of Cups, but if there is an issue with the problems presented in the film, Kermode didn't really make that clear IMO.

  • @burkezillar

  • @RonanMurphy08
    @RonanMurphy08 Před 8 lety +19

    Knight of Cups wasn't about "1st world problems", it was about a search for meaning in life, which is a universal subject. The fact that Christian Bale's character lived a decadent and materially privileged life is beside the point. It only highlighted how empty and meaningless his life was spiritually. It's a great film.

  • @wiseguy100
    @wiseguy100 Před 8 lety +3

    Saying Eli Roth should grow up is a ridiculous thing to say. The guy makes genre flicks. It's his thing. Would you say the same thing to John Carpenter or Adam Wingard? No. And no I'm not comparing Roth to Carpenter. Just giving examples of other genre film-makers.

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 Před 8 lety

      Eli Roth's characters are awful, just awful. That mentality permeates his movies, and yeah, he does indeed need to grow up and actually learn to write characters that would actually horrify us to see die. In horror, that's a pretty big deal. It's not the fact that he likes genre flicks, it's his approach to them.

  • @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion

    My personal worst ten from the 91 films I saw with Jan. to June US release dates are:
    10. Ride Along 2
    9. Mojave
    8. Mercury Plains
    7. Cabin Fever (2016 remake)
    6. Kindergarten Cop 2 (real movie!)
    5. Dirty Grandpa
    4. God's Not Dead 2
    3. Norm of the North
    2. Fifty Shades of Black
    1. Meet the Blacks
    Dishonorable Mentions: 400 Days, Get a Job, Bleed, The Forest, Diablo, The Boss, Gods of Egypt, The 5th Wave, and Allegiant.

    • @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion
      @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion Před 8 lety

      The Vicious Chicken of Bristol I have, but I liked it. Currently my 32nd favorite film of the 99 movies I've seen so far in 2016. I definitely had problems with the sloppy editing in the middle and while I like Jesse Eisenberg as a villain, I don't like him as Lex Luthor. He feels more like a Riddler kind of guy. Overall I had a fun time with the movie. I'm curious about the Ultimate Version.

    • @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion
      @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion Před 8 lety

      TheAuthorsFiles It's mainly 32nd because I don't think it's a bad film. I can understand the disappointment, trust me. But I found it overall competently made save for some scenes that felt like they needed to be right after other scenes as opposed to one or more scenes between them and Jesse Eisenberg not feeling like Lex Luthor. There it some really good, dumb, fun action, that is a bit hollow, but entertaining enough. I also loved Ben Affleck as Batman. The good outweighed the bad for me just enough to give it 4 out of 5 which to me means really good, but not amazing or outstanding. Plus, I went into it thinking the absolute worst, especially since the 2nd trailer gave away the whole movie. Maybe those extremely low expectations helped me like the movie more? That can happen for me. Plus, there are movies out there that have absolutely no redeemable qualities and is just complete incompetent film making. Movies like Meet the Blacks. I can't in good conscious put a completely incompetent film over a mostly competent film I had a fun time with.
      Out of those 99 films, only about 31 of them have under 3 stars from me, meaning there are only 31 films so far from 2016 I disliked overall.

    • @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion
      @BruceGiffordJustMyOpinion Před 8 lety

      The Vicious Chicken of Bristol I'm sorry you feel that way, but people do have different opinions. I can understand where people can be very disappointed with BvS. I had really, really low expectations when I went into, especially after the trailer that revealed the whole plot. But I felt the good outweighed the bad. It also could be because I never read any comic book. So, I didn't have a certain expectation of BvS being close to... is the comic called The Dark Knight Returns... (that's the one with Batman vs Superman, right?). So, I have less of a disappointment level with BvS than a lot of others could have.

      I generally think that the best if the year and worst of the year lists need to be broken into multiple, more specific, lists.
      Batman v Superman is legitimately one of the worst big budget blockbusters of the year, but if you broaden the list to movies with wide releases it may not make it; and if you include any movie that was released to theatres, I don't think most of these movies would make the cut.

    As far as The Green Inferno goes, it's a "meh" film, but its subversion of cannibal movie stereotypes was interesting. You just because you missed the point that Roth was making, satirising the faux-activism that is so prevalent on university campuses and Twitter (that is to say, people who only support causes to gain social cred and look cool.)

    I watched BvS ultimate edition last night and it was excellent. It appears that Mark has no creative imagination as Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was terrifying and unconventional. Snyder should be applauded for his faithful approach to the source materials. Also, finally Mark has seen what many others realised about Mallick many films ago. He is confused and with an overblown sense of his own importance and lack of vision. Tree of Life was so patronising and childish you could be forgiven for thinking it was made by a 6 year old. Forcing religeon nonsense into people's faces while paradoxically worshipping nature. Has there ever been a more falsely worshipped film? Wake up and re-evaluate Mallick's output in the last 10 years. It is embarrassingly awful but pretty to watch!

    I would have been ok with BvS DoJ being number 10 until I saw the 'ultimate' cut. After watching the film Zack Snyder intended to be released I regretted all the bad things I had said about the film I saw in the theatre. It must have hurt him terribly to see his work shredded and put into a crude collage which was to be presented to the public for judgment. Please, enough slamming of BvS. The 'ultimate' cut is not without its flaws, Jesse Eisenberg's snot dripping, but it's not a terrible movie.

    I actually enjoyed The Green Inferno. Also, I'm not quite sure why you used the word 'nasty' in a critical manner to describe the film, and that is was made by a 'fanboy' (or rather a grown man passionate about, and revered within, the genre). I'd actually consider those elements as positives for a film of this nature i.e. a violent horror film made on a relatively small budget.

    Ghostbusters (2016)
    I do not know how Kermode could list Knight of Cups as one of the worst films of the year and give Paul Feig's atrocity a pass.
    Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy look like they were embarrassed to be in the film. (And based on some behind the scenes rumors they probably were.) Leslie Jones does not have a reason to be in the film other than to play the loud histrionic stereotypical black woman. And Kate McKinnon give the absolute worst performance by a supporting actor I have ever seen, and that includes JarJar Binks!
    Whenever the film is not leaning on references and cameos from the original like a crutch, the humor is either based on tired slapstick, improvised dialogue unrelated to the actual plot, juvenile toilet humor, or pop culture references from the previous century.

    Waiting for the BvS defence crew to assemble, they seem to pop up wherever anyone takes the slightest bit of umbrage with their film or Snyder. I went into it with the best will in the world as a lover of all things superhero and was left sorely disappointed. Overlong, clunky, needlessly loud, as Mark says an endlessly irritating performance from Eisenberg, and in parts just plain boring. Oh, and the JL shoehorning was just unnecessary, Wonder Woman and Batffleck basically saved it from being a complete waste of ticket money.

    I don't think Knight of Cups was "first world problems the movie". That film seems more like a criticism of many peoples obsession with material goods and superficial beauty. I find it surprising Mark didn't like it after his brilliant rant about Entourage. Knight of Cups seems to be the opposite of that, there is no back patting and celebrating the degradation of women, it's all about showing how completely empty that sort of life is. It's a man who seems to have everything and yet is completely lost because money, fame and being surrounded by fake people is not a rewarding experience for most human beings. It looks great from the outside, a shining french polish that covers up a worm infested piece of furniture.
    I can't help but feel his reviews are being skewed a bit by his obsession with sexism in cinema and that sort of thing.

      DrKosher3 Couldn't agree more, in fact some of favorite titles for the past few years were non mainstream, ironically the movie theater that I go to is Cineworld and as of late they have not been screening any non mainstream films, so I guess you have to really search for new titles in order not to stay informed of what's out.
