Matt, you should be wearing a Back Brace Support Belt with all the heavy lifting that you're doing.
I injured my back 8 years ago because I was doing a home project and should have been wearing a Back Brace Support Belt myself. Today, after 3 back operations, I'm 95% bed bound and on drugs to manage my pain 24-7.
Kristen, see that he wears a Support Belt.

When building your actual home. Build it with concrete, rebar and blocks. Then you stucco the outside and paint with a sealer exterior paint. This will take care of your walls and exterior finish, strong, waterproof, handles harsh weather. Doing it this way is the cheapest, and you can work as fast as u like. Once the roof is on you have all the time in the world to frame, plum, wire, sheetrock and finish the home.

Matt, please use wire cloth that is approximately 1/4 inch square in size spaces. Snakes can easily get in through chicken wire but not the 1/4 inch wire cloth. Ask me how I know. Yes one got into my chicken coop through the chicken wire. The only thing that saved us was the bird netting covering the top. The snake got in the bird netting and got trapped, could not get out. Snakes love chicken eggs, little chicks and bigger chickens if the snake is big enough. They go after them at night when chickens are sleeping.

As far as the chicken coop, either buy the screw on axle chucks for popping wheel axles into. If you get wheels on swivels you only need them in 1 direction, if you get wheels that are fixed axle, Add them in both directions on each corner. Then you pick up 1 corner at a time and pop the wheels in. This makes your coup into. A big chicken tractor.
If you want to save money you can always just drill holes through the 4x4's & 2x6 then get any cheap wheels you can find used like 4 fat bicycle rims & tires or grab some old dirt bike or motor wheels and tires from a junk yard if you can find them. Then when you want to move the coup lift up a corner and pop the tires in. You could make a sliding system to be able to slide or flip the wheels up and down and lock them in place if you are really ambitious like the dinghy wheel bracket systems.
You can Do it Captain Poopy Pants
You can Do it All night Long !!

To move mobile chicken coops, the farmers I've followed put two wheels on one end that touch the ground only when they tilt the coop for movement.

    • @lonniepee9804

You need to build a "chicken tractor (look it up). Making great progress, looks like fun. You never want solid floors in a chicken coop, Build it like a deck, so there is room for the poop to fall through, the chicken poop will rot out the boards.

  • @buffalo241

  • @wimingtonstuff4872
    @wimingtonstuff4872 Před 7 měsíci +3

capt poopy pants is making decent progress but you might regret not being able to stand up in the coop. In the jungle you should build with a small gap, especially when using screws. I'm looking at a warped and cracking railing that was installed 3 years ago super tight with screws. hammering a piece of wood in place because its a tight fit then screwing it together isn't a good jungle build method. with nails it could maybe pull apart a little without cracking.

Boom, you're done! You could even use a car jack to jack up the coop to put the axle under it.

Over the years (decades), every time the wife and I attempted to become somewhat self-sufficient, such as growing our own vegetables, chicken farm, fruit trees, etc, after the dust settled and we totaled up the expenses (not to mention all the labor involved), we found for just 2 people on a small plot of land, it was easier and less expensive to just buy eggs and food when we need it. Hopefully when your dust settles things end out working out better for you. Looking forward to seeing your house design and construction get started.

Helpful future pro tip for homesteading, if you place post in ground, lightly burn the sides and end of posts . This is how old timers treated wood post, als use a hard wood and or rot resistant wood if possible. You do have lots of bamboo, which I have seen ppl coat the bottom with a light coat of tar. Let it dry, wrap with any type of cloth and then set post.

...the essence of any good story is that we care about the characters, want the best for them, and become attached to them. Matt and Kirsten, the quality of your film making is exceptional, but more than that, you make us laugh, you inspire us to take on new projects, and we're all so enjoying this new journey you're on. Bless you both☺...loved the bit with the kitten!

You should get some of those wire balls for chickens. They're like hamster balls, except for chickens. That way they can roam around pecking the ground yet have barrier against hawk. That's is so long as hawk doesn't carry the whole works away.😮

You guys are Awesome! Learning as you go in true GBU fashion. Growing your own food is one of those things that has a slow learning curve, because it takes a season to see what you did right and wrong. Our neighbor uses seeds that come on a paper tape. You just plant the tape. Great results and high yield. Thanks again for taking us along on your adventures.
