One issue is most important that the width of the gate is enough for a construction delivery truck to be able to turn in to the driveway with proper clearance, and because it is necessary to turn to enter, that requires more room than just the width of the truck itself.
And you leave a little extra room in case he isn't a great driver, or has trouble.
Yes depending on the truck 10 to 20 m radius will be necessary
Ha, so I’m watching this with my 81 yr old dad, and he starts to describing what your property looked like before!?!. I come to find out he has been watching your channel as well!!! Good stuff for all ages!
Thats awesome!!
It’s 83 and I wouldn’t miss an episode!
Geeez, and I am 86. I sailed my own boats from 33 to 44 footers over the years. Sold the last one 3 years ago. Love you guys
Matt, it seems to me that you couldn't dig a straight ditch. So as you were going along and looked back, you decided the indent was intentional. I'll give you the benefit of it was rally the hat brim that threw you off.😂
That one cat looked like a leopard. I think they have a breed name for them.
Nice job!
What's happening with the boat?
Be careful and you guys stay safe
Foist of all… the black hat IS MATT! Don’t even think about changing it. You’ve found your Senor Puerto Rican Farmer look.
Second… Matt is a Beast! Proving once again that it’s good to be young. Hand diggin’ that footer through concrete and clay… truly proving that you’ve earned to wear that awesome man-hat.
Kirsten… (you’re beauty, charm and school spirit truly proves that you’ve earned that awesome man-fiance).
You guy are carving a beautiful farm out of the jungle. Who does that?
Sailors.
I love how the chicken was trying to help move the coop.
That one is a pain😂😅
Also, I know you are young, capable and a hard worker! My hubs was a custom builder his entire adult life. He is now 68 and paying for it with arthritis and nerve damage. Don’t wear yourself out please! Love watching your adventures!
Agreed. Just because you can do it manually, doesn't mean you should.
Nice work. I personally miss watching the boat life. I'm an electrician who has dug many trenches by hand. I'd get a good amount of work planned out & rent a mini excavator for a day.
All it takes is one accident to stop ALL progress - be careful
HI guys not sure if the wall is poured as of now. I would run some electrical conduit before you drop the concrete for lights and plugs for future endeavors. Sorry about the cats towns people must have heard how big your hearts are.
Hi! The sailing vet here, with some options for the kitties, we have funded veterinary care and worked with animals through out Asia and Central America, stray and owned, so have a fair bit of experience with these situations!
First option is to get them neutered/spayed and release them, treat them as wild cats. This is not the best option because they tend to devastate local wildlife but at least no future kitties. Second, and better, option is to get them neutered and vaccinated and try to rehome locally, or third once they are 3 months of age they can be flown to the US either to a cat shelter or to new homes - with your large following I think you'd be able to find them homes and flight volunteers to take them back. Final option... start a kitty sanctuary - lol, but well done for taking care of so many! A great initiative you could look into is facilitating a local veterinarian with funding so they can do a spay and neuter campaign in your region, animals are rarely abandoned for lack of love but more commonly because people lack the resources to care for them properly. Facilitating local spay and neuter is the ultimate solution to stop kitties being dumped on your property. Hope it all works out for you and the kittens, they are super cute!
Thank you! This is what we're thinking
From salty sea dogs, to Puerto Rican cat ranchers. That’s quite a plot twist. 🤓
You might want lights on your two columns.... Maybe run a PVC pipe where the driveway is?
Other ways to run power of course!
I can't believe a block fence requires a footer that deep, I'd have done half and called it a day. When I used to do houses in FL we didn't even go that deep. You are a Manimal Matt
Hey Guys! We are back binge watching catching up on the BUILDING GBU Channel! !!! MATTY YOU ARE THE HARDEST WORKING SUPER HUMAN I HAVE EVER SEEN! How have you not injured yourself or even take rest time for soreness?
You guys look so focused and happy! Can't wait to see your home completed and little barefoot GBU rug rats running around the property.
The way you guys operate as 1 unit, and take on the traditional male and female roles is a beautiful thing to watch! Why can't we all just be who God made us to be!!!??? Male and female become one flesh??? Its very simple and beautiful! God bless 🙏🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️
you need at least a 20ft maybe 24ft gate for trucks to be able to haul in supplies. you may be better off to wait on your castle wall till you build.
how can anyone abandon cats, people are disgusting. Thankfully Matt and Kristen are great examples of humanity, This is why I watch the channel, Bless you guys
How can they? Easy. I have seen them do it to me. It usually involves a ratty car as transportation. I would have assumed a pickup. But so far on my property, ratty car first.
Good news, no rodents on my property. Keep feeding them and even the most feral gets comfortable.
Unfortunately they can't keep taking in cats, there's a limit. I would personally make the decision to bring them up to an age where they can fend for themselves. Limit their human contact as much as possible and not make them pets.
There are several documentaries as to why this is a very bad idea. In the U.S. alone, cats hunt and kill approx. 1.3 billion birds each year. They are also responsible for the extinction of 63 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles world wide. They are killing machines. @@BarryBulsara576
@@BarryBulsara576They all need fixed and treated as TNR cats
Cats along with all other types of animals are abandoned and dumped everywhere everyday. What we need to do is teach our children that animals aren’t disposable and aren’t to be used as personal forms of entertainment for humans. People need to STOP buying animals and start adopting from reputable shelters and rescues, and people must spay and neuter, I don’t care if it’s a cat or a bunny, a dog, or a ferret. Write your community leaders and government officials and don’t stop writing and calling them. Get rid of the mindset that having baby animals is oh so cute. Those babies grow up quickly then are dumped and in many cases the babies are dumped.
Pay no attention to the negative comments from those with weak minds and bodies Matt. I've been homesteading for 25 years. I'm now 64, I'm still in great shape, no health problems, I can still do the work of multiple men, and people are amazed at how "young I look for my age". I eat an organic whole foods diet, only my own pastured chicken, eggs, and lamb, mostly my own veggies and fruit, and catch much of my fish. A non-toxic diet is essential. Regular yoga, running and some weight training to balance out the homesteading work, and I have none of the normal age related illnesses of my peers. Years of hard work, balanced with rest, and care of your body and mind, will not wear you out. It will keep you strong.
@SailingGoodBadandUgly I just noticed. You guys broke 200K subs. That's fantastic !!!! Congratulations !!!!
Matt and Kristen and all of the g b u family, good morning.hard work and play does a soul good.
Good morning!
Matt and Kristen,
I guess that it is true when they say "Cat's have nine lives." At least your property will have a low mouse headcount.
Matt,
I have to say that watching you work shows how someone can accomplish whatever they set their mind on,; with very few hand tools.
Cheers!
Blue Skies.
Faithfully,
James
Blue Skies!
'99 problems, a ditch ain't one', brilliant, I know that song!!! Awesome work with the cats. Obviously great work on the footings.
Looks a lot like work, Matt ain't lazy!!!!
“Spicey” babies are the most fun to break. I have fostered quite a few. The trick is to keep the play area smaller with only one or two others. Sit in the area while hand feeding and playing, twisted up pipe cleaners are bomb. Do not try to rush the taming, they will come out on their own and want to participate. They might just be shy. I am happy you two are helping these little guys.
Might want to get your cats fixed when they are older or it might get out of hand there .
Good morning from the desert of Arizona!
work smarter not harder! Jack hammer and wheel barrow for the chunks of cement so you dont have to pick them up off the ground. Its really sweet of ya'll to take care of all those kitties. You good people.
I've rehabed a lot of murder mittens at the Humane Society. Tip 1 Patience. So much patience. 2 Give them a box to retreat into and respect the box. That's so they know no matter what happens the box is safe. 3 See things from their perspective, you're big, being grabbed by a giant is terrifying to them. Loud noises are bad. 4 Calm your energy when working with them. Quietly let them get used to you being in the room. Just sit and speak softly to them, before working with them in their cages. 5 Offer food by hand. If you can purchase the lickable treats where you are at, they work great and keep your hands out of harms way. 6 Once their eating from your hand start trying to pet. Try slow blinking all the time, lots of slow blinking. Don't just stare them down. Slowly they will come around. Sadly the last tip is they don't all come around completely. It's a spectrum. Still good cats, good mousers and all deserve love. Good luck and Matt as a former "Bull" be careful, we are so much alike. I built my 2700sqft home with my own hands, started a business from nothing and as a martial artist I love to fight. Never needed anything from anyone, but my body is paying for it now. You gotta do what you gotta do, but save what you can. You can't be the Bull forever. Sheepdogs like ourselves, have to there for the people and animals that depend on us, or we go crazy. Luv u both.
Thanks for the tips brotha, I'll definitely implement those. I'm gonna ride the wheels off my body for 2 more yrs then ima chill after 40
Congratulations for having 200k subscribers!
Thanks 🍻!
I didn't find your channel until you became land owners, so missed all or your sailing adventures. Sure am enjoying watching you two now. Really look forward to your posts. Love the compassion you have for all those kittens.
Those time lapse vids of Matt killing it are terrific. The calming music that goes with it works well.
Hey Matt - old oilfield hand here - you should watch a vid on how to swing a sledge. It’ll save you a lot of time and energy.
I wish I had Matt's energy. Great work you two!
All of Sailing GBU videos should be shown to all these Gen Zers. Matt and Kristen both have great work ethics. I don't want to sound like an old fart, but for the most part, kids today don't know how to work or do things for themselves.
Dat boy been diggin' some ditches!
@@CNubel you nailed it sir .
Wow, I am so impressed with Matt and Kristen's dedication to building their dream on this abandoned property! It's truly inspiring how they are turning something neglected into a beautiful haven. And kudos to them for their kindness towards animals too. It's heartwarming to see them take care of orphaned cats and offer donations for their well-being. Matt's energy and determination are truly admirable, and I have no doubt that they will succeed in creating an amazing homestead. Keep up the fantastic work, guys! Blue skies and blessings to you both. - Your friendly sailing channel commenter
Thanks Sisu crew!! We do what we can
Some money for the kittens. What you do, I and Gabrielle would do too. We also found a nest once. Under the floor of our house. With 4 kittens. And the 2 cats we have now also come from the shelter. Greetings from Spakenburg, the Netherlands.
Remember when you build the wall make sure you leave room for your deliveries when you start building the house ( tractor trailer)
Matt,
One more tip, et rid of your dug dirt before it rains. While the dirt is dry, it is much easier to move. Once it rains, it will weigh twice as much and take twice as long to move.
Alan from NC
God I love you guys, You were worried when you started this adventure that you would loose subs not being on the boat anymore. I'm here to tell you that your content is still Amazing! I would watch you two doing anything. The content is still interesting, the interaction between the two of you is loving and wholesome, and the work ethic you guys have is inspiring. Please never stop filming! 99 problems, LOL
The good the bad and the Amish ,,,,digging like a dog on the beach. Good job Kirsten and Matt. Thanks again.
Hey ! As soon that you put that big front gate also some solar lights . so people won't keep dropping off cats or trash . Then Soon people will get that property is not empty anymore and hope it will stop .... keep strong 💪.
Getting ready to shovel snow. But I thought I would watch you guys first. 👍 just noticed the shirt.... Hello from Michigan!
I love that you guys are not afraid of hard work! I love that you are rescuing stray animals being left at your place. I love that you want a farm and animals. I love that you want to live off the land and have lots of gardens. I love your land life more than your sailing life. You guys are killing it!!! Keep doing what you do😘😘😘
The chicken helping to push was awesome!
Boy are you tough ombray. Over the many years watching you I knew were tough but this takes the cake. Good on you.
Wow Matt! No one can say your Heats not in it! if I lived near to you guys I would come over and help. You guys never disappoint. One recommendation if I may; gloves! save the hands. Later in life Your hands will thank you later.
Its a shame that people keep leaving kittens on your property but I'm so proud of you for catching, feeding and getting their shots etc. Its a heavy burden but bless your hearts 💕
You guys are very kind to keep all the cats. Thank you for being very kind 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Matt is a work beast! Wao! Breaking that concrete and digging that trench by hand is no joke! I have a lot of respect for a man who can do hard labor hour after hour without complaining or giving up. I am 55 years and in my life I have done my share of hard work so I know what it means. Matt maximum respect bro!
Matt you are one hard working dude. My hats off to you.
Those trenches were dug really nicely. Matt kind of is a machine, I'm soft as hell and really impressed.
I had a litter of kittens once and one of them was born feral. From birth he would tense up at the slightest touch. As he got older he would stay at least 10 feet away from us, he was un adoptable like that. So, I caught him in a blanket. It was a fight but I held him in there and petted him while watching a movie. Eventually he relaxed and after a long time he started to like it and by the end of the movie he was out of the blanket and following my hand to get petted more. He was a loving cat from then on.
Sent you two some love to help you support the cats. 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻. Keep up the good work and sharing your love with the world.
Lower tire pressure, 20psi, gives better traction off asphalt. Lucky didn't damage the diff &/or sump without kerb built up. Can't beat Foam Core Fencing (& building materials). Backhoe would have dug that trench & cleaned up in 1 hour max.
Love the way Kristen keeps speaking over Matt mid sentence/story.
Matt that is one deep footer. By the way if Kristen or you like rose 🌹 plants they grow very well in red clay. All this labor is building some 💪 brother. Good for you. Kristen I know the potato salad was epic. Feed the help well! Lol. Good luck helping those abandoned kitties. It is shameful people just drop them off like that. I am feeding two myself now. Best wishes and respect sent for you both. 🇺🇸
I was thinking the same thing it is a good looking trench but the ones we did did not need to be that deep, and I live in California where there are codes for just about everything you can think of.
Yes, the footer will definitely be below the frost line..... :)
The Silver Surfer to ditch digger…….That’s what a backhoe is for..! Work smarter not harder😮 pvt. Dudley the ditch digger…… cheers 🥃
Fed a feral cat, unapproachable for ten years. He had an accident, I trapped him and had him repaired and neutered. Four months later he moved in. That was three years ago. Now he is my big fat sooky boy. Sits with me while I watch your videos.
We had a local cat lady she disappeared and they found her skeleton covered by cats, now we have a new cat lady down the road the other way, we see at least 30 cats at any time, I suggest you never run low on feed.
Matt you are a real machine and doing a terrific job without a lot of major tools. It's amazing what you two accomplish together and reminds me of days gone past. It seems nothing is too daunting for you two to handle and do well.👏👍 You sure could use a portable electric JACK HAMMER to make comparatively quick work of the cement you are working now and that in coming projects. You two are terrific!
yes the Jones Act makes every thing so not doable.
The little black one with white feet should be named billy white shoes Johnson lol, have fun guys those kitties are adorable and gonna love you two, you’re Alaskan friend 🙏❤️
Who needs a jack when you got Matt. Great idea with the wheels on the coup
Kitten Tacos, lizard steaks and a sunken boat.... what a life 😂
Good luck on your cat situation. It will be a never ending uphill battle and a continuous flow of unwanted pets from the locals. Is what it is. That's one heck of a footing you dug. As I get older, there is a point that I realize that, despite the rental cost, a machine such as a mini excavator is the way to go.
“99 problems but the ditch ain’t one”. Priceless. 😂
"Good,Bad, and Ugly Cat Farm" new name of your channel.... lol. ❤ the Video.
Metal Container homes. Earthquake proof. Have you consider it. It’s becoming popular in PR due to the recent earthquakes there. They also make great tool sheds
Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa 🌍🇿🇦
9:13 We are going as we go, that's just how we do."
So great y’all are taking care of the kitties! The white cat that’s cross eyed is probably deaf. Figure that out so you can better care for him/her. Love the videos!
While I like the idea of your Jurassic Park style gate, it looks like you don't have that much room for your plans. Maybe consider a slide track gate? It'll take up much less room
Very impressed with your work ethic Matt, you are a hard worker. That seems like a very deep footer though for a block privacy wall in that climate and clay soil? You all never do anything half way though. Looking forward to the house construction; you have years of videos with all the projects ahead.
Sincerely, Matt is one of the most capable, resourceful and industrious dudes on CZcams. If this guy needed to get to space, something tells me he could build it. 💪🏻👊🏻
Uncle Matty, yes, yes you are a machine !! 💪🏽💪🏽🦾🦾🦾✌🏼😎🦃🦃🦃
When building that fence keep in mind you need bulldozers and stuff like that to get down. To build a house or something I doubt you want to live in that RV for rest of your life. I'm just trying to help I like the fence idea. What I am saying keep in mind the gate size. It might need to be big enough for equipment.
We're gonna do a 12'gate
Hey there Matt and Kristen! Clearly "going as you go" is getting you where you're going. Matt, your work ethic is definitely deserving of my praise. 👌👍 As well, it may indeed have you doing that, what was it, "Magic Mike dance" whether or not Kristen likes the way it looks! 😉 Kitty Haven continues to grow I see. Just lifted up a prayer for you two. See ya next week. Be safe.
We took care of a feral cat that our son caught for about 15 years. That was an absolute mess of a cat as a home body. He never left his feral attitude and was never outside. I had 3 stitches from him but my wife worked for years & finally could pick him up. He had dander and his fur was long & matted most of the time. It sounds like we are terrible animal people but we love animals & are very good with them as family. What I’m saying is the feral is in their DNA, so, all you guys should do is keep them safe as you can and let nature take care of them. Hope this helps & your videos are great. THANKS & good luck. I’ll watch the episodes.
I would put the wall on the property boundary--that saves money and solves problems. If the wall is curved--not such a worry. The mortar between the blocks, or the boxing for the pour, can be curved to make a good job. One could even cast the wall panels and move them into position and bolt them together.
Mornin yall ✌ Been looking forward to this!
Us too!
really cool to interact with you!
Likewise big dawg
Keep you eye peeled for a used compact tractor with attachments. Having one would make your life so much easier!
Thank you so so much for rescuing these adorable kittens and thank goodness for ppl like you. 😇😇❤❤. God Bless you both!!!
Why did you remove the driveway concrete? Isn’t the road continue thru that area? You definitely work hard Matt. Well done!
Beautiful place 😊👍
Matt. You are rocking that hat ! 🔥😊
As far as your feral cats go, they will take care of theirselves, only problem being is the breeding. Unfortunately it will cost you a small fortune to get all these cats that you have fixed. You both have a heart of gold and a love for life, It's very unfortunate that people can't afford to get their pets fixed. Might want to check if there are any vets there that would do a free or very low cost spay and neuter.
You sure are a hard worker, your place is going to be amazing with the effort you're putting in.👍
Great work Matt! I will offer donations if orphaned cats are hungry or sick. It's what good people do for our furry friends. Homesteaders are super stoked when they eventually aquire a tractor btw!!!
We're looking into a machine of some sort
ATM? 😎
They will need funds to help with neutering for sure.
@@SailingGoodBadandUgly 35hp tractor with 3 point hitch, and front end loader is all you will ever need there. So many attachments.
The happiest you You Tube channel. 👍🏻👏👊. Comment.
Amazing video, the land is getting so much better, your family is growing, so sad how people treat cats and dogs , but at least they aren't drowning them in the ocean and lakes ,or throwing them on the freeway like some places,I don't know I hope they don't treat their children like that, thank goodness for you guys to help those who can't speak for themselves, this is the first time I ever replied to your channel,I've been watching your channel for a while your underwater shots I miss ,but the land and building is so amazing to see how you transformed it,keep up the great work, can't wait for next week video
Hi guys, sadly the locals just knock them on the head Good to see you looking after them. I’m not a real cat person, but I wouldn’t be cruel to them or any animal.
A really easy way to hand dig anything is using a auger, $200 removes dirt quickly and you can easily hand shovel between holes. I did the entire perimeter of foundation for a 30 x 50 cabin house. The dirt your handling is similar to Georgia. It only took me about 3 days for the entire thing.
Get a PO box and somebody might send you a proper Stetson. And you can do mailbag episodes where you open the stuff people send in.
God I love watching you guys !!!
Another great video this week, nice to have the drone shots. Gives a little better understanding of the overall game plan.
Good, Bad, Animal Sanctuary ❤ i love that you guys are so caring with animals. I've been going through a hard time with my precious 15 year old kitty for the past two weeks and will likely need to make a very hard decision this week 😢 ive put 1/2 years rent into her so far but shes still not eating after her life saving surgery. I've done everything i can to provide her the best care and comfort. Shes been my companion since she was a little barn kitten and now shes a big city girl down town Toronto. Been the heardest two weeks of my life for a very long time.
Anyways, i just want to say how much i love you guys! I've been a long time subscriber and i love how much hard work, determination and persistence you guys show each week!
If the straight wall bugs you with the road you can make a nice flower garden to fill that shape in to make it work. it will look really good.
A few points: a curved wall would provide more strength then a straight one, but seeing the dimentions of your trench I'm guessing that your wall will be about that width too, so should be strong enough with no curcve, and your box shape feature, if the wall follows that trench, will provide good strength and stabilisation., although the shorter piece of wall, on the other side of the path, will not have the same good properties as the main wall, but considering the thickness of the wall, as suggested by the footings trench, the shorter part of the wall should be OK. I am not a builder, but have built various things like sheds small to double garage size, rock walls with concrete and mortar, extensive vaving and currently extensive concrete block walls at our hillside home, all at a reasonably high standard (taking a lot longer that a pro, of course. Last point re the cats: My wife and I love animals. The way you are collecting cats by "donation"will quite likely lead to more being "donated", because theses donors don't, or can't spend the money to avoid breeding. You'll needd to resolve what to do there pretty soon. You could try to find animal lovers like yourselves and perhaps play a part in starting an animal shelter, or support an already established one.😇
Probably to late, but have you thought about trucks, semis, truss vehicles getting into your site for your house, barns, etc, build?
Clay and rocks , great for diggin
My family are masons, digging footings my whole life! You earn my Respect!
Don’t you think before a fence you should start building your place to live or get septic set up or anything on the land before a fence is priority??
The old building has septic, we're using the fence as a crash course in block construction so we can move ahead with the house build more confidently
Hey Matt, Have you guys sold the boat or do you still own it? I'd love to see a video about what happened to the DD.
