Not many people like this music! I was talking to them from a Pakistani's perspective folks. How can you not see such crowd and me sharing the fact that Metallica is the first band to perform in all seven continents. In Pakistan many people dislike this kind of music but I am a metalhead on the other hand. Please stop lol!

Metallica is the greatest metal band in the world. They have compilations with orchestras that you might enjoy. Their music is very complicated, and they are immensely talented. They are loved by more people worldwide than any other band of their genre. I have seen them live in concert 10 times. Long Live the Mighty Met!!! \m/

For USSR it was the real wall-breaking event. Even the military guys started vibing, though initially being brought there to control the crowd. That's the true force of music to gather and transform people.

Western music was banned for so long, just traditional music and BAD BAD soviet pop to listen to. I think I'd flip out and get excited freely listening to real music live for the first time too.
@@AwesomeFish12 yes, I think these bands were allowed to play because of a change of attitude in leadership. Gorbachev was enacting perestrokia and I believe these concerts were part of it.
@@AwesomeFish12 What tf are you talking about. People in the USSR could listen to foreign music during the Soviet Union, it just had to be approved by the government. Sometimes foreign artists held concerts in the Soviet Union. Western music wasn't banned altogether. And music was relatively diverse, not just "traditional music" (which was more classical than trad btw. Hearing actual ethnographic songs from villages was extremely rare). Pop music wasn't bad at all, it was actually very good, with strong melodies etc (I'd say Russian pop music today is generally worse than it was 35 years ago). Even Soviet cartoons and movies had excellent music (classic example: Bremenskiye Muzykanty). Most music was rooted in a well-structured, classical melody tradition though, so at some point a lot of people wanted to hear something fresher (mainly younger people). The problem is that you weren't allowed to be a pro musician and be paid for it unless you were a member of the musician's union of the Soviet Union (a.k.a a government approved musician/composer), which meant you had to go really underground to showcase your music. Even though music in the Soviet Union wasn't as diverse as in some other countries until the mid 80's, it still was great music. Metal that came into the USSR during the Perestroika felt super fresh, which is why a lot of people liked it (and why a lot of Russians are metalheads even today). Metal was associated with freedom and coolness. Doesn't mean that old music was not "real". Stop spreading bs when you know nothing what life is or was like in other countries.

Back in 1990 I was in Alabama visiting my brother and sister in law. Me and TJ went to pick up his wife's car. I was driving the truck home. While waiting I was parked behind this older man about 65. @@scottoshea9440 To be fair, both Pakistan and Bangladesh have previously been part of India, and the three, as well as Nepal and Sri Lanka, share a huge amount of linguistic and cultural heritage (with the head bobbing you're referring to being one example), and so the term "South Asia(n)" is often used to refer to any of these countries while avoiding the need to specify a particular nation.
Geographic terminology is pretty confusing, and the political realities of any given region really don't help. The essence of your comment was ultimately accurate, not to mention funny, hence all the likes.
This music is not to make you go insane. It's to let out the pain from inside and let go of it. Where some people understand, others don't. That's why a lot of people don't understand metal.

I actually get "pain" from listening to stuff that's too simple and formulaic. I like primal, heavy, dissonant, jazzy, weird, experimental, high complexity.

Precisely. I enjoy many styles of music, but metal is so...empowering...energetic...and yes, anger-expressing/releasing sometimes. And some of its lyrics are downright poetry, such as some of Ozzy's, Iron Maiden's, and Metallica's, which make you think.
I didn't believe you when you said Metallica has played on all 7 continents and had to look it up myself. I said, "No way Metallica played in Antartica. No one lives there." I was wrong. In 2013 Metallic played a show in Antartica called Freeze 'Em All for an audience of ~120 people. Amazing!

Exactly. This is why i hate the part about they say it's bad and used for torture, that could evidently predispose them to dislike the music in the middle of the song. Any noise loud enough can be extremely disrupting, not just metal.

Metallica's concert in Moscow was a historic event. The cold war that existed over 50 years had just ended. The youth of Russia finally experienced a sense of freedom for the first time. Metallica's songs are stress relieving. Believe me, Russia had a LOT of pent up stress! The youth went wild :)
Approximately 1.6 *million* attended. It was one of the largest concerts ever performed.
The USSR fell in December. The concert took place in september

Yeah, the only thing that annoyed me was the takes of the interviewer on the subject, like: "do you need aspirins?" and "no matter how hard you try, some things won't mix up together, like water and oil. This would never mix up with nature" and others.
The thing is, art is a subjective thing and it can be brought up to the table in almost infinite ways, since every and each people has its own takes on various different subjects.

@@dmytrocks it's just remarkable because this is the 5th biggest concert ever held with somewhere around 1.6 million in attendance. At the time, I believe this was the 2nd biggest concert ever held, 2nd to a concert held in Paris 1 year prior that had 2.5m in attendance. Compared to countries like India, or China with populations well over 1 billion people, that may not seem like a lot, though I suspect it still is. Especially for western society where historically we don't often gather that many people unless it's for battle, and they were all there to rock the fuuuuuck out 🤘🤘

I have no basis for this theory mind you other than myself, but i feel like metal and other fast/loud music like this has to have some sort of relation to people with anxiety or some form of ADHD. Like, your mind NEVER STOPS racing, so something else coming in and doing the racing for you helps relax us. I get some of my best work done when i have something like Death Grips, The Prodigy, or Knocked Loose in the background.
@@SammyNail ADD kid here. Can confirm. When you brain is getting pulled in a dozen different directions at once, having something on in the background that distracts part of it allows you to focus the rest of your attention on what you need to.

Good on these people for coming with their open minds. I find their reactions were honest, pure . We are all different and many among us change often. We must allow this in each other without physical conflict or hurtful words. Everyone must be free to experience this life, and then, to share the thoughts freely, without fear of any oppression or condescension.

I loved how the old guy immediately got that it was a lullaby, but his kids would not sleep after haring it. That was priceless. The guy with the cool hat being mostly concerned about the crowd was very nice, he didn't seem to like the music but would like to invite them to lunch.

I made my 67 years old parents headbang to Gojira of all bands. That's a win in my books.
@@Lamren I'm 62 I never got into the head banging music. In my teens heavy metal was Deep Purple, Kiss, and a few others I liked and listened to, but as they got deeper they made my head hurt, still does. Your parents probably listened to the beginnings of heavy metal themselves.

I know my dad listens to at least Devin Townsend and Porcupine Tree now, but I don't think my mom will ever "really" listen to heavy metal ever, it's a style you need to get used to and I myself dislike a lot in it ;-)

Alas, some softer more melodic heavy metal never stoped existing.
And in the 90s, in Europe (with a few bands in South America) you got some examples of Symphonic Power Metal.

I'm 62 years old female metal head. In the 70's with 17/18 I listened to Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Rush, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and many more...
My mother got into metal and heavy metal when she was about 60 and this was in the 80's/90's. Our neighbors in the street probably thought my Mom was nuts, because every Monday when she cleaned she listened to very loud Metal. When you came up the street you could hear the music already 🎶😂
She still listened to Rammstein and Metallica when she was 80 +. My dad was into classical music and when he was 70 he started with Pink Floyd and later Metallica. So music has no age barriers.

I went to a heavy metal concert (Edgar Winter) and the sound actually made me faint. When I woke up the concert was over, so I must have been out for awhile. Thank you again, Gentlemen, for your thoughtful comments. Heavy metal seems to have strong effect, one way or the other.

It was from a Pakistani point of view. Also, in general, Metal has that effect on the world, millions of people like metal around the world and at the same time, many more millions don't care, know about it, or like it at all. See Wacken? Massive right? Even Black Metal makes it over there, and yet, most normal people don't listen to metal around the world. So, he's not wrong.

Nothing against Metallica or Metal in general, which I do like. But Metallica's most popular song is 'nothing else matters', which is more pop and less metal. It's still more popular than many other niche genres but general audiences don't really like Metal.

@@LazizbekYusupov92 the low growl is pretty similar to a dog or bear, false chords bear similarities to frogs, birds and wildcats depending on the notes. There's also pig squeals and what not. In fact some of the vocals are just backwards snoring.
Metallica playing in Moscow is one of the greatest things ever done. Almost 2 million people watching a concert is just insane.
And to think Putin is trying to send Russia back to the dark ages? Why they haven't killed him yet is beyond me. He will destroy Russia before backing down

@@ShapeNoise ....I cant even see them in the U.S.! Have you been on ticketmaster and seen the price of concert tickets to see them? In 1977 I paid $15 for front row center to see Kiss. In 2022 it costs upwards of $5000 to get the same seating. If you get stuck on balcony or row 300 seat 75 your still gonna pay over $400 and you will be looking at a screen just to see the band! No fucking thank you.. I can get alot of majik mushrooms for that and go to a full out concert in my living room on my radio! Fuck Russia!

I've watched some newer video's, but I love to see how your love for metal music first began with Metallica. Absolutely love the concept of your channel. And how much work the guy behind the camera does to learn new things about the world, and his eagerness to share his new knowledge with the other guys.

I love how calm and thoughtful and polite they all are. When they saw the crowd, they expressed concern for the safety of the people there. It was heartwarming, and they were right. It's fascinating to see how others perceive things I grew up thinking of as normal.

If I remember correctly in Islamic countries there have been stampedes with large crowds, resulting in dead people. That's why they'd know large crowds could become a risk.

What a fantastic video, it was great to watch it and see these nicest people! They are all just so positive and open to new experiences. I really liked them all. It was a bit unfair to show them the biggest concert that ever happened because at least half of their impressions if not more came just from the scale of it. On the other hand, this made me remember how heavy a song Enter Sandman is, how it builds up and slams you hard. Especially in that live performance. If you’ve been listening to all sorts of metal for 25 you kind of forget, but it’s definitely not a “pop sellout” song as many people may try to present it. And at the end of the day this proves what I’ve been thinking lately: that metal is way more popular than most would think. Even here out of 5 people you have 2 new fans, one guy who’s interested, one kind of ok, and only one who would consider it torture. Metal rules!

It's so interesting how the masculine aggression in heavy metal music is only understood from a Western Perspective. Whereas, when this type of content is shown to the tribal people, they see it as women with long hair, playing long instrumentals, in overly large crowds. Its kind of funny, how the cultural discrepancy is explored in their reactions.
There are metal heads, quite literally, all around the globe, not just in the Western world. It’s people in isolated and/or highly religious communities that are rarely exposed to, let alone fans of, the genre.

This video is an amazing experiment. It shows a true microcosm of society’s feelings to metal: it hits different people in different ways. But despite the reasonable range of reactions and comments, somehow it all caught me off guard. How could something so aggressive and foreign sound soothing to an older Sindhi gentleman and get a young tribeswoman fired up? Clearly I need more faith in the open-mindedness of the world.

Music is a quality that transcends borders and cultures. It is one of the few universal loves for humankind.
But yes, I was surprised she was into metal as well. I need to believe less in stereotypes.
I was surprised by this too - but then I reminded myself that I've listened to tribal and other music both traditional and otherwise and it's connected to something within me even though it's not my culture and/or foreign to me, so I imagine that it's something similar for these people. It's just hard to imagine that when it's a type of music that's so familiar to you!

Yeah I respected that the guy wasn't judgemental about it; it just wasn't for him. There's no faulting that. I understood where he was coming from...I love metal but screamo literally affects me on a neurological level. It's not that it's hard. I LOVE Slipknot until the singer comes in then I can't turn the volume down enough. Not a criticism...that scream tone makes me physically uncomfortable. It's like it's in my genes to get away from it. I can imagine this guy might have felt similarly about Metallica.

Though not my favorite music, this is perhaps my favorite video. Those were such hopeful times. I was surprised how much some of the viewers enjoyed the music. Awesome reaction videos. I've learned so much about human nature. At my age, that's a real treat. No reason to get old when it comes to learning.

If there's one regret I have is never going to a Metallica concert. But not just any, concerts in their Metallica Black era, or earlier. That would have been a life changing experience.
1.6 million people were there at that concert.
I was a spotlight operator for the Metallica show opening the new stadium in Minneapolis Minnesota. As I fought against instinct to climb the 100 feet of chain ladder, I reconsidered what brought me to this life decision. When I got to the top I witnessed a unique point of view 50,000 Metallica fans pointing at me. I paused and then put my right hand up in the ROCK HORNS \m/. There was a wall of smoke and screams as 50,000 replied in unison.
How was the sound? I've heard mixed things; that the glass caused issues with sound(??)
@@maxemerson6955 every surface was vibrating, my wife could hear the concert in our home a mile and a half away. it was great for me suspended 80 feet above Lars, the flame bursts got hot. When we dropped thousands of black Metallica beach balls it was like living in a heavy metal lava lamp.

But the differences in the music itself is like black and white.
@@knownasL on the surface it is. If you can get sheet music and compare compositions they are also quite similar. Check out some orchestral covers of metal. Rage against the machine's "killing in the name of" for example sounds great. This also works the other way around. Beethoven's "moonlight sonata" played with metal style instruments is haunting if tuned correctly.

I think there's something to the raw emotion of metal that can speak to people regardless of where in the world you're from.

@@Gatchi And that was over the course of all three days. You have a city of 1.6 million people and over three days only 51 went to the hospital. I posit that metalheads are safer to be around than normal people.
