I remember watching this on TV, I was 13 years old. We had just eliminated Brazil in the 1/4 finals, we thought the hardest had been done. And then this game which was SO disappointing. The Germans were not particularly good. Until the very end, I thought we could equalize and qualify for extra time. But the mistake by Bats and that 2nd goal dashed all hopes. I went to bed crying....

Remember this game. French were constantly getting caught offside. Got so frustrating after the flag went up for the umpteenth time. Think the Brazil game a few days earlier took a lot out of them and this game was just a day or two too early for them.

Germany's overall world cup record is just so much more consistent. For example, Germany never got kicked out in the first round, Italy seven times. Seems like Italy are either really bad or really great, while Germany are always decent at the very least. 2. At the moment, Italy does not play very well. So get ranked down. 3. After the last world cup, Germany has just the same amount of stars and much more medals (4 silver, 4 bronce, while Italy only has 2 silver, one bronce).

This match kicked off at 12.00 mid-day on a weekday, hence the empty seats. This was done for the benefit of TV channels in Europe, who wanted the matches to be played at prime time in Europe, which meant that many of the games kicked off at the hottest time of day, and many of the locals couldn't get to the matches as they were either at work or school!

Remember this game. French were constantly getting caught offside. Got so frustrating after the flag went up for the umpteenth time. Think the Brazil game a few days earlier took a lot out of them and this game was just a day or two too early for them.
Yeah that game against Brazil really tired them out it was one of the greatest games of football I ever saw , it was balls to the walls , n o defending just attack , attack ,attack ,attack ,attack. Didn't help also that most of their players weren't as fit as they were in 1982 .

If you look at the bracket for this World Cup it says France beat Italy and then Brazil. Germany just beat average teams (Morocco followed by Mexico) to get there.
At least France made up for it this year, they took 30 years to do it but it must've been great to be French when it happened in Marseille.

Where ad Brazil have recently struggled against France in competitive matches I still find it hard to believe that Germany have never beaten Italy in a major tournament but only in Friendlies and Germany are higher ranked than Italy. They always seem to outplay then but Italy catch em on the break

I do not think at all that it is strange that Germany is ranked higher than Italy. It makes sense despite the fact that Germany is weaker in the direct matchup for several reasons:
1. Germany's overall world cup record is just so much more consistent. For example, Germany never got kicked out in the first round, Italy seven times. Seems like Italy are either really bad or really great, while Germany are always decent at the very least.
2. At the moment, Italy does not play very well. So get ranked down.
3. After the last world cup, Germany has just the same amount of stars and much more medals (4 silver, 4 bronce, while Italy only has 2 silver, one bronce).
Germany always find a way to win...regardless of circumstances
i remember this match, france was the favourite to win it, but they had their gunpowder wet that day, i really don't know what happened to the french team that day, it was strange how they couldn't win that game
The Brazil game a few days earlier took a lot out of them. Had they had another day to recover, maybe they would have done better.
