Why do people talk about international tournament pickings as if they are some sort of reward? Whoever has inherent qualities and the right profile should be taken to win. There is one left wing who can hold width well and provide threat in transition in Gordon. And he’s not a better player than Rashford by a distance.

Playing Kane and Saka means you need a winger on the left who can make fast runs in during transitions (this is very important in international games which are usually very transition heavy)

We’ve always criticised England managers in the past for picking players on reputation rather than form so fair play to Southgate on that regard.
Having said that, Rashford is one of those players that on his day can be the best around.

In the four major tournaments Rashford's been to, he's only started two games in total(one of those was a dead rubber) and he's only started six England games since October 2020!
People also seem to have the impression that Rashford is often great in an England shirt but I'd love somebody to give the many examples of when this was the case because I'm struggling to remember them all!
Wouldn't Southgate have given a player he's apparently very fond of more than one start in all the meaningful tournament games we've played in recent times and more than six starts in about four years if Rashford often played brilliantly for England?
The facts are Rashford has been mostly-poor for about seven years and particularly awful for well over a year now and the quicker England's and United's managers realise he has no business being anywhere near those two teams and move on without him, the better!
I can’t really argue with Southgate’s decision to drop him based on his recent form, but to be fair to Rashford, he does tend to score when he’s in an England shirt, such as the qualifier against Italy, and back in the World Cup.

I never liked the way rashford was used anyway, Southgate always brings subs on 15 minutes late and then expects them to change the game with 10 minutes left and rashford has never been able to do anything in that situation for England. So it’s not much of a loss. But then again you never know, nobody expected Sterling to carry us through the group games last time.
