Dieses war mein Jahrhundertspiel......nach dem 3:1 in der Verlängerung das TV Gerät ausgeschaltet und wollte heim fahren, draußen am Auto plötzlich Gebrüll aus allen offenen Fenster der Straße, wieder rein gelaufen TV angeschaltet, noch das 3:2 durch Rummenigge gesehen in der Wiederholung......dann nahm das Spiel noch so einen Verlauf. Der reinste Wahnsinn, hab da meine ersten grauen Haare bekommen, da war ich 19 Jahre alt.......doch jedes einzelne war es Wert.......

What a great game. It really had it all. I still remember being a 9 year old little boy and it was the first game I really consciously watched on TV. That's when I sat in front of the TV with my mouth open and couldn't believe how amazing Littbarski was. Scored a goal, more or less prepared two goals, took a penalty and comforted Uli Stieleke when he missed. From then on I was a Littbarski and Cologne fan. And it's incredible that I met him in person last year and was able to tell him that this game changed my life. It was unbelievable how nice and friendly he reacted and was almost ashamed.

Hi Cain. I remember this match very well . I was 12 years old at that time. France had a great squad . In my opinion the best 2 teams in the torment were Brazil and France. Definitely it would had been a great match between them. I would agree with you in that Germany always has been persistent squad and hard working. For many world cups it deserves the trophy for sure.

France was not used to being at this level at the time. We lacked experience, unlike Germany which had already a historical experience in the WC (66, 70, 74). France played well technical which was its strength but also its weakness. We have not been able to adapt to the events.

Back then in Uganda, "Football Made in Germany" was the the only one on TVs and it was my team with the likes of Libasky, Rumminegger, Lothus Mattius, Obadia. There just wasn't any other team to admire than the German. Later followed by screening Premier League where, most sponsors were electronics Companies, JVC, SHARP, TDK, etc. I loved JVC electronics, Logo worne by Arsenal team, that's how I got to love and support the club to date.

The best World cup extra time that I have ever seen. With two quick goals by France early in the extra time, an injured Rummenigge coming to the game and scoring, the fantastic semi bicycle kick by Fischer, and those penalty kicks, Stielike's missing followed immediately by Six's missing, and at the end Schumacher saving Maxime Bossis's shot.
Epic match. Those who watched WC 1982 will never forget it along with the ITA-BRA game.
One of the best and most iconic matches I have seen . Beautiful football by the talented French side met with the great discipline and determination by the Germans . The drama that was brought Shumacher-battison incident, the comeback by the Germans and the again comeback in penalty shootout added to the intensity of the game. On the French side I liked Jean Tigana a lot , he was everywhere attacking ,defending and playmaking . On the German side I liked Rummenigge whom even though was injured and came late when Germany was down ,he raised the spirit of the German side and played fantastic game resulting in the eventual draw

Schumacher was acting aggressive throughout the game until he collided with Battison , his ill intentions were obvious . He deserved to go to prison . And yeah that German team brought shame to the whole sport and not just germans since they had another infamous game with Austria also known as the disgrace of Gijon
Schumacher did play foul, but in Football history there were others who did more worse things and nobody cares.

The two best games of any world cup.I have seen were both in this tournament..This game and Italy v Brazil. The French were a great side with Platini, Tresor, Giresse and Rocheteau but the Germans always found a way to win.....even with bloody Horst Hrubesch

I was doing my A-levels at the time me and my dad were watching the game he went to bed with the score at 3-1 I remember my dad saying that's France in the final only for me to tell him in the morning Germany beat France on penalties. A truly great game.
This scenario did occur within many families around the world. People left 3-1 in favor of France then when they left the game or went to bed, the next morning they learned that Germany has won! Amazing times. Thanks.

I was 12 in a popular suburb of Paris. The building was shaking when France scored twice in ET. And then the come back of the German, the penalty shootout and…tears sadness and decades to be able to see that again. What a match. This is a like a drama. A movie could be made out of this match.
France faced against Germany again in 1986 and lost but wasn’t as exciting as this one at least they broke through 16 years later
I remember watching the game with my dad as I was released from the hospital the same day for appendicitis surgery. I was 15 and at the end I cried so much that even today I can't look at the pictures until the end for me. I had a nightmare and this cruel ending was a bad dream!

Pour moi c'est 84 ou 86, en 82 nous n'avions pas un bon gardien, de toute façon si à Séville ça n'avait pas été Ettori dans les buts nous aurions eu Baratelli, Castaneda, Dropsy, ou Bertrand Demanes et c'était tout aussi faible qu' Ettori !! À partir de 83 et la prise de pouvoir de Bats la France changea de niveau.

Epic contest,watched this live as a 7 year old and still one of the most memorable games I've seen.A shame that Rummenigge wasn't 100% fit but made a big impact coming off the bench.His penalty was one of the best and coolest I've ever seen, considering it was a do or die shot.

I as barely 12 then and was rooting for France. We all became so ecstatic when France ws up 3:1 in overtime - we thought "this is it!" But then... What a game! This and the Italian win against Brazil (hat trick by Paolo Rossi) were probably two most beautiful games of that World Cup.

As a French, I can't see the match after the 3/1 period, so sad. At that time, I was on holidays with my parents, aged 12 in Austria (Heiterwang am See-Tyrol). We had seen the match in the family pension, with my brother, we were the only French boys in the front row with all Germans and Austrian behind us. At the end, we've climbed to our bedrooms in tears. Never forgotten that night, fantastic and terrible.
Why can't we redo history? France deserved to reach the final. But we were at that period talented but naive team. Thanks God it has changed, we've learned to win.

In 1998, yes, we became cold winners with hard defense and opportunist goals. Then again in 2000 and even more in 2018. partidazo espectacular para mi fue uno de los mejores de la historia junto con brasil -francia de 1986 y la final del mundial 2022 yo creo que a francia en este partido la perjudicaron terriblemente porque debio haber sido expulsado schumacher por la violenta falta a battiston dentro del area y debio ser penal ya promediaba el 2do tiempo creo que iban 25 0 30 mts podrian haber ganado ahi francia luego se durmio demasiado en el alargue increiblemente despues de estar 3-1 y se lo empataron pero fue un partido fantastico hasta el ultimo suspiro me gusto mas esa francia de 1982 y 1986 que la de 1998 lejos

It was the most dramatic game I have seen in my life!
Epic and tragic. There have been many great matches in the World Cup but none with such dramatic intensity. I was 15 and as a Frenchman I supported my country but I was also a big fan of the great K-H Rummennige as a player in the Bundesliga. His entry changed the course of the match because he re-motivated the entire German team.
Probably the most dramatic world cup match of all time..the best was Italy Brazil at the same world cup.

As a German I can't deny how dirty and brutal Schumacher's action was against Battiston, and I have no explanation why he wasn't sent off the pitch, but despite this disgusting foul, this will always be remembered as one of the best World Cup Matches ever played.

I still remember watching this game with my family. One of the most exciting and tense games I ever watched. After 90 min. my sister left, when France made the 3-1 in extra time my mother left, after extra time my father left so there were two boys left in the middle of a hot summer night watching the drama unfold. My father has not really left though. He just couldn't watch it but he had his ear at the door.
I remember watching this game after years (I was 9 months old when it was played) in a retrospective of WC without knowing the result. I still remember how astonished I was from the come back of the German team. This is my all time favourite football game. I became a fan of France because of the elegance of this team. Dominique Rocheteau my fav of their players. He looked like a rock star!

Небывалый матч, просто невероятный. К.Х..Р. вышел на замену и вернул немцев в игру, которая уже казалось была проиграна. А потом эта безумная серия пенальти.
Французы были настолько сломлены поражением, что многие игроки основного состава не смогли выйти на матч за 3-е место, в итоге бронзу взяли поляки с блистательным Бонеком. Ну немцев ждала в финале очаровательная и хулиганская Италия с волкодавом Джентиле и великолепным Росси и конечно же с легендарным Дзофом.

es que para mi a francia la perjudicaron al no expulsarlo a schumacher por la terrible falta de este dentro del area y ademas penal para mi esa final la debio jugar brasil y francia hubiese sido un partido para alquilar balcones ya que los dos jugaban muy bien al futbol y al ataque lo que son las cosas que 4 años mas tarde se encontraron en mexico 1986 por 4tos aca francia estaba mas armada y brasil no tenia el brillo del 82 pero fue un partidazo espectacular hasta el ultimo penal de fernandez hay que ser sincero francia tuvo la suerte en momentos decisivos como el penal que le atajaron a zico ya promediando el 2do tiempo como asi el que le saco a socrates en la definicion por penales pero tambien hubo un penal claro durante el alargue del portero brasilero carlos que agarro a bruno bellone y lo desestabilizo era penal y no lo sancionaron fue un partido fantastico entre dos equipazos que daban espectaculo

The offside could have been on Rummenigge at the far post. The offside rule was strickter back then than today. Not even level with defender was allowed

Yes, I remember him saying that! Though in fairness to him it's what just about everyone else thought too. West Germany were the only team in the world mentally strong enough to recover from a situation like that.

Fisher’s header wasn’t an offside.
He was in the top of the penalty box onside of the French defenders when the ball was passed to him.
Up until the late 80's I think the rule was that a player would be deemed offside regardless of his involvement in the situation, and Rummenigge might have been slightly in front of the defenders in that moment. That said, CZcams-clips from old matches shows a lot of horrible offside calls..

1986 konnte ich ab Viertelfinale wegen einer Reise nach Übersee mit lauter Fußballdesinteressierten erst im Nachhinein sehen, das war natürlich bitter. Aber unabhängig davon fand ich die Deutschen 1982 spielerisch besser als 1986, trotz des fragwürdigen Auftretens insbesondere in der Vorrunde, erst gegen Algerien und dann gegen Österreich. Abgesehen davon: die Deutschen denken ja bis heute immer, gegen afrikanische Mannschaften ginge es nur um die Höhe des Sieges- und nach dem Spiel kommt dann immer die peinliche Ursachenforschung. Zur Erinnerung: 1970 ein mühsames 2:1 gegen Marokko nach 0:1- Pausenrückstand, 1978 ein mageres 0:0 gegen Tunesien, und gegen Algerien hatte man ja schon 1964 in einem Freundschaftsspiel 0:2 verloren; die jüngere Vergangenheit (zweimal Ghana in der Vorrunde, einmal Algerien im Achtelfinale) ist wahrscheinlich sowieso noch gut in Erinnerung, besonders das Interview mit Mertesacker🙂.
Aber nochmal zu 1982: wenn Schuster dabei und Rummenigge gesund gewesen wäre... *seufz* (War halt auch die erste WM, die ich selber mitverfolgt habe.)
Dieses Spiel hat viel Kraft gekostet. Und zwar für beide Teams. Ich denke, dass auch Frankreich die Finale verloren hätte.
@@egon4593 Das erste Spiel ist für den Favoriten am meistens das schwerste. Und so eine große Fußballmannschaft, wie Deutschland wird von anderen immer gejagt. Afrikanern vom Mentalität sind gut auf ein-zwei Spielen. Und im 1986 Deutschland war in der Gruppe mit Uruguay, Dänemark und Schottland - hieß Todesgruppe. Urus als Südamerikameister, beste Dänemark aller Zeiten und Schotten damals viel stärke als jetzt. Also keine Karneval-Truppe. Weiter waren Marokkaner, die nach dem Sieg gegen Portugiesen haben die Flügeln gekriegt. Im Viertelfinale waren die Mexikaner - eine Gastgebermannschaft, die zuhause schon auch die Brasilianer besiegt haben. Franzosen im Halbfinale wurden glücklich besiegt. Und im Finale gegen starke Argentinier haben sie ein guten Kampf geliefert und beinahe gewonnen. Also schlecht war die deutsche Nationalmannschaft nicht. Es haben die Gegnern sehr schwer gemacht. Franz Beckenbauer hat aber mal erzählt, dass er zur Weltmeisterschaft 1986 die fitte Spieler genommen hätte.
