My name is Christian Swenson. I'm a 29-year old autistic man with interests in philosophy, art history, and all sorts of things. I made this channel to talk about the experience of autism from an autistic perspective. Autistic consciousness isn't normal consciousness. The autistic world isn't the normal world. I want to explore that world with you.

I'm ASD level 2 and the biggest issue i've had as an older adult is that most people assume you grow out of it as a child, especially employers. I am really good at my job but I am overwhelmed by my office at work which has bright lights, huge amounts of noise from people in cubicles and even wearing the ID card around my neck i can't do. I attach it to my belt. People think because i'm an adult i do this intentionally to be disruptive or are just over sensitive because i choose to be. I am exhausted when i get home from work, not because of the work but because of the sensory overload combined with the awkwardness of not being able to engage in all the social aspects naturally, as in what to say, when to say it etc. It disappoints me that i regularly feel burnt out from the anxiety trying to fit in and adapt and have to take days off regularly because i'm exhausted. This doesn't go down well with any employer. If i could only just be left alone to do my job. During the covid lockdown i got to work from home for a year and my work performance and health skyrocketed.

Another point about the word "disorder": it's currently necessary as without a "disorder" (or disability or illness etc) you can't advocate for accommodations or assistance. When we have a society that values diversity and supports everyone according to their needs, then maybe we won't need the label disorder.

Finally, someone who has the same views of the word disorder as me :) 😀
All hail the OED over social nuance!

You can have my 10 year old gift card to Border's if you like. Seriously, though, you're in good company.
