- Today, courtesy of Ferrari fan and all round good guy Damian @TheCarGuysTV I finally get the chance to experience the legendary 458 Italia!
Regarded by many as the finest Ferrari V8 of all time, just how good is this instant classic of a car? Will it dethrone the F355 as my all time favourite?

No turbos and the balance between oldschool and modern tech is perfect
This is my favorite modern ferrari. It hits the sweet spot for me
a manual 991.1 gts is great too
Agreed. Although i wish it had CarPlay, the rest of it is just fine. The DCT, natural aspiration, high revving, and the fact that it's price isn't as overblown as early V8 Ferraris like the 308/328 series, makes it a more compelling value.
DOES THIS HAVE A FRONT AXLE LIFT SYSTEM??
@@retrorewind6042 Same i own One a 6,2 Spider 458 Italia and I love It Oh Allah this thing is a beast
Best personality currently on CZcams... unfortunately he did not CZcams “How to button a shirt”...
No and Damian did not point out this error to me for the hour I spent filming lol
@@JayEmmOnCars I didn't even notice until these comments. Now I can't breathe. :D
@@juhojalonen3046 shirt lives matter.
Love this 🤣🤣🤣
@@juhojalonen3046 I think it actually adds to the video! 😆
Cannot unsee shirt buttoned up wrong :)
I thought I'd prefer looking at a 458 to looking at an incorrectly buttoned up shirt..... I was so wrong...
🤣🤣🤣
He shirted his dressing this time.....I'll see my way out.🙄
Me either....so funny!
Mummy must have been out when he got dressed 😂
owned one for 3 years before selling for a .2 gt3 manual last month. great car. just lacking that manual transmission is the only fault i could find. Great handling (although the rack is VERY over assisted) it feels like a big go-kart for the road. Its also wayyy more comfy than the gt3.
They did a fantastic job on the styling..
The car or James?
You are kidding right, that thing is pig ugly.
@@venom5809 Either that, or you have terrible taste
@@venom5809 Not fair, he's just a ''big boned'' dud with no dress sense.
@@venom5809 you are the type of guy who thinks the McLaren Senna its the most beautiful car in history :v
The first time I saw a 458, it blew me away with how stunningly beautiful it was. Nothing has changed in that regard, but I’d rather have a manual F430, if I were ever lucky enough to be in a position to make that choice.
Merry Christmas James 🍻
A manual F430 would be amazing. Did you see Harry Metcalf's video?
Truth! A manual 430 would be the dream. If it had to be a modern car, a gated manual first gen R8.
Manual F430s look to be in the 160-200k range unfortunately... when the F1s are around 120 (USD)
@@joe718gt4 yeah it’s a bummer. 430 is my favourite Ferrari and I think the best looking Ferrari and I always prefer a proper manual gearbox. But ask yourself, would the f1 gearbox really ruin your enjoyment of owning the car, if you could?
@@midnightkiteflight6333 IMO probably not. That 60k could be used for maintenance or more important things in life. But if you have to have a manual I would just go straight for it. You get the most important thing both ways... a screamer Ferrari
Your reviews are as detailed and as professional as Chris Harris’s one’s, very good stuff, keep it up
So, not very professional but still the best there is?
@@Anankin12 I mean professional as in getting to the point well and detailing the car in the right way to convey the sense of driving it, aka giving people what they want to know about the driving experience, anyone can say ‘it steers well’ but you’ve got to mention the feedback of the road etc
@@BGcontentproduction yes yes, JayEmm is actually very professional here. It's Chris Harris who isn't, although his are the best reviews on anything ever.
@@Anankin12 you’re saying it as if Harris presents his wrongly then in your eyes?

I'll never forget the 458 on Top Gear when it wiped the floor with the 430 in the drag race!
And also when the Mclaren 12 c did the same to the 458
@@MrCoreslash beat me to it lmao. Its unfortunate McLarens are so unreliable.
@@KeenanStyles and so expensive to reapair.
I mean, 60k for an aged and outdated infotainment system?
@@MrCoreslash too bad the McLaren is such an ugly and unreliable car
@@MVD792 there simply not ugly though. There new cars are stunning
The 458 is stunning, it came before the turbo and the horse power battle. Just look at it 😍😍
458 is one of my fav ferraris, probably the last new ferrari i would want
Yes I completely agree, no more N/A and no more Pininfarina. Yuck
@@KeenanStyles i actually like the styling of the 488 more than the Styling of the 458. For me the 430 has a real „the last ferrari“ vibe with the manual gated shifter
F12 prices are coming down 👀
You will never be able to afford one anyway.
@@8PMFORMULA I used to say i would never afford an Evora, but i ended up buying one so whilst it is unlikely i wouldn't say it is impossible one day i could buy one.
Dressed like wurzel gummage there James 😆
Hahahahaha
A disgrace 🤷♂️. Maybe because he is locked down - prison shirt.
Not entirely convinced the buttons are lined up with the holes. Shirt looks lob sided 🤣
It’s a good job we’re here to see the cars.
Drove one of these around Thruxton for a driving experience and couldn't believe the speed of the steering and how responsive the front end was to change direction, so sharp and so ready to turn. And the sound at high rpm is amazing. Dream car material 😍
Damian from The Car Guys, legend 👍
Cheers, Mark
James sort out that shirt! Start with button No1 the No2..........yah, you get the idea.
😂😂😂love the watch check😂
I bought a 458 in June, I can't stop driving it, it is such a blast and sounds amazing! my 911 gt3 is not getting the use because the Italia is soo fun
100% agree, it keeps on pulling you back in.
I want at least one of those
@@joe718gt4 when you finally do and you can, they are all they are imagined. I'm enjoying these 2 immensely. My wishlist includes Performante and F12.
Mid engined Ferrari's haven't been the same since this car. Never been able to top it. Which is an absolute shame
@PYXB3 interesting for me I think 488 looks better than f8 and 458
@@doughnuts5364 l would be quite happy to have a 488 pista parked on the drive way.
Thank you James and Damien. It's great that you collaborate and support each other's channels. Both of which I thoroughly enjoy.
James, should you get more wheel time with the 458, it would be fantastic to hear your further developed thoughts.
Stay safe and enjoy the holidays everyone!
Beautiful, easy to drive, more than fast and with a lovely sound from its high revving NA V8. What else to ask from a sports car?
a manual transmission, that's what
Damien's The Car Guys is the best car collection CZcams channel by a country mile
Jay Leno's Garage might have something to say about that..
James, your shirt is buttoned lopsided. I love that you don't give a shit.
I remember when this car just came out. Top Gear were all over it saying it's like the best thing ever
Well at its time it was, a new ferrari desing with an awesome engine and sound, good looking car with new tech and pretty fast, was everything you want in a Ferrari but better
Same here! JC did the review-the good ‘ol days...proper TopGear, Pininfarina Ferrari, international travel lol
Yes, this car made James May's F430 completely worthless. Which in turn justified Jeremy throwing trash in it.
The other day a 458 drove past, a car I know very well, and still, I stopped in my tracks and just watched. It’s an epic epic machine. Low, wide and utterly beautiful.
Cabin airflow through a lot of the newer cars is dismal, it’s like being in a tumble dryer with the door closed. The manufacturers I am sure just think that aircon will take care of this issue. But a quick trip to the shops in December results in steamy windows, a draft through the cabin helps keep everything less frenetic I always feel. Great to see Damian on the channel too 👍
Excellent review, JayEm. Your honest and articulate reviews are always appreciated. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have to say that the lack of any side air intakes is what makes the 458 the pinnacle of styling excellence for modern Ferraris. I think the gaping side intakes that followed on the 488 detract from the purity and simplicity of the 458's
design form.
This guy has a 4th gen Prelude. That's a car that needs to be tested
I don't want to look like another "hater" of newer ferraris, but this (along with the 599) are the only modern ferraris that i would buy without a doubt. They're simply too beautiful and, from my point of view, they're already classic cars.
I really like mclarens and lamborghinis, but with those 2 models there is no match
The fact that this one has the last n/a ferrari v8 is an appreciated bonus, and the rest speaks for itself.
I would like to do your job, i would love to talk about and drive cars for a living
Thanks Jay for your insights, well done! The 458 is a 'benchmark' mid engine car imo...everything before it was much less; from the 458's creation, supercars have radically changed, for the better!
Great video, great cameo for Damien, let's hope the car guys get aload more subscribers from this 👍
I drove a 458 on track a while back, it was sensational, my Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio feels as close to a 4d version of a 458 as I reasonably think you can get (the steering in particular), one day I hope to have a 458 as well tho !!
It’s so nice the camaraderie between petrol heads, generous Damian, good work JM.
So happy Henry got a recognition but such a shame at the same time that a literal Le Mans 24h class winner and Henry's partner in Evo and Drivetribe back in the day, Mr. Jethro Bovingdon isn't quite as famous these days
Let me try to conclude - if you want great sound, true Ferrari feeling, buy a 355, if you want a 355 w/ modern optics go and get a 360, if you want a driver Ferrari w/a stick go F430 and if you want a daily super car go 458... :D Thank you and Damian for this lovely review. Will need to review my priorities when buying my next car ;-)
Go for it Jay, I watch ur show because I like ur opinion while many others feel obligated to say what the car owner (manufacturer or owner) wants them to say.
Impressed you managed to go that whole review without one direct comparison to the 12C!
One of these is aging a lot better than the other.
Didn’t want to show far how behind the McLaren the Ferrari was😏
12C the better driver's car I would say, and a better GT although the 458 impressed with its damping (488 is very harsh by comparison).
458 build quality interior wise does seem better however as mentioned Ferrari suffering with some other QC issues in this and I think they really should have a longer anti corrosion warranty at that price- 10 years minimum shouldn't be a stretch
@@JayEmmOnCars very fair analysis I must say!
Watch the Firth gear 458 vs 12c. No comparison
CH and HC are legends, but James... is just James - don’t change a thing.
The quality, consistency and breadth/volume of videos is fabulous, keep up the great work.
Top Gear with the three of them would be pretty epic and finally watchable again, that's for sure.
@@venom5809 you’re definitely on to something there :-)
@@user-qn6yt3zx3w In any Top Gear video you will see dozens if not hundreds of comments from people who they would like to see as a host, Catchpole being the top request usually, so of course they always go out and hire people no one mentions or wants to see, it's amazing. 🤦♂️
here here
I'm generalizing here, but the British seem to be unable to comprehend that A/C can be used with warm air to completely demist interior windows.
I've always done that, my driving instructor told to, so I've done it ever since. 🤷🏾♂️
@@Maurice_Moss I know Eh !! Junior high school science class. AC removes moisture. Hot or cold is irrelevant. Misted windows = excess moisture. Solution is: remove humidity.
I see 458s increasing in price in the future being the last of the proper mid N/A engine cars.
Especially the Speciale's value, because it's the last mid engine N/A Ferrari
@@nbmaheswara my job had a Aperta listed for 650k USD. The car didn't even last a day before someone bought it.
As more and more car companies switch to EV or hybrids, this 458 will skyrocket in price over the next 5 years. Plus any Lamborghini which they are one of a few car companies that still will make new cars with N/A V10 and V12's.
The car that has everything. Speed, handling, sound, Prestige and looks. It's like a Porsche but more spacial.
1:05 Best laugh I’ve had all day and my day literally just started.
How come your videos are full with so much more new info than the videos of some much bigger channels. Especially for a car like this where literally everybody is talking about an everybody has made tons of videos with it. Great job! Very underrated channel!
Loving the vids - channel really picking up momentum which is great to see!
Good review, nice to see Damian piece at the end, interesting to get the owners take on the car. Would like to see this more if possible. Happy Christmas.
Great review, super of Damian to lend it to you as he has given me first refusal on it!!
Thanks for these Christmas uploads Jay. The F430 was a welcome upload yesterday and then this today! Great stuff cheers
Excellent review, James...thanks. Glad to see Damian here, too (huge fan of The Car Guys). The 458 is pretty, though I still miss Pininfarina design.
You know that second dude knows his shit when he pronounces "SPECIALE" correctly. Hats off to you, Sir.
You are killing it lately, great content. Keep them coming.
Thanks for making Christmas time way better! Looking forward to all your next videos!
Brilliant video James! Big fan of the 458 and @TheCarGuys.TV so perfect viewing for a soggy Boxing Day! Loving the incorrectly buttoned up shirt too :)
👍
Had a huge poster of the 458 side profile across my bedroom wall when it came out. In my opinion the most beautiful modern Ferrari by far. It is my ultimate dream car. Great review James.
“This is my everyday Ferrari.”
Good for you sir! I’m happy you use this as much as possible. I also agree on wanting a manual. I do t care of its slower I believe it is part of the experience of driving.
Wonderful Collaboration...!!!👍👍👍
Jay, you are awesome! Thank you for the great video, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
"I promise you I'm not doing anything salacious in here" lmao!!! Great review, thanks!
Thanks to Damien and to Jay for making this video of this marvelous car possible. Having driven a 458 I can say your analysis was very honest and detailed. I agree that a 458 is a very desirable car to own. One thing I noticed on driving the 458 for a long drive and driving my Cayman R immediately afterwards was that the front structure of the 458 was not as solid, had a little more twist on bumpy roads, but maybe that was just the one I drove. And yes I agree the steering is very good, but a little light, and does not offer the best feedback as a few select other sports cars do. Drivetrain and exhaust sound of the 458 another reality. Great video. I was really looking forward to this video.
Damian summed that up nicely - 16k miles and enjoyed every one - thats Na V8 for you 👍
I've not been soo madly in love with such a Ferrari since the f40
“You’ll try to indicate by tooting the horn or changing radio stations.”
That got a laugh from me.
Have to say being a huge Ferrari fan this would be the one I would buy if I have to choose only one. This video only confirms my thoughts.
You need to take your shirt to Iain Tyrrell for realignment. Your review on the otherhand is spot on.
Well, I admire him for getting the car in the colour he wanted and the wedding car rental market shouldn't be sniffed at.
😂😂😂
Sensational JayM with the Fiery Ferrari ! Your character reminds me of that other journo' from Downunder Steve Cropley ? Stay away from the Vampire Virus this festive season and looking forward to your review of the last Vauxhall Monaro.
Is that the same 458 where the window smashed????
Loved their comparison video on the 458 vs 488 and definitely agreed with their conclusions.
Give me the classic, naturally aspirated V8 any day. Ferrari’s finest symphony!
I love the lack of vents on the side. I think it's one of the best looking Ferraris ever. right up there with the F355 and the 250 gt Berlinetta Lusso
Excellent review. You're amazing how much and how long you can talk about a car. I also get the feeling, unlike other reviewers, that it only takes you one take. I'm guessing you actually have to edit out a ton because you could talk forever. Keep up the good work!
Best thing ever having the indicators on the wheel . It is so easy to get used to and works really well for me.
Love the drive by's & that you never add cheesy music👍
The Pininfarina designed models are still the most beautiful, by a wide margin. Also, the 3 tailpipes in back is so iconic. Of course Honda copied it on their pile of do-do Civic. Fine review of this very elegant car.
Sure the 3 pipes are cool but it makes the back end look like the Sloth from Ice Age.
Lovely car great report thanks guys! Merry Christmas 🎄 and a Happy New Year 🥳
Just watched a video with two of the most genuine car guys on youtube
Love the @thecarguys.tv ! Great GT3 videos from years ago.
Fantastic car, owned by a top fella, love your channel and the car guys too. ✌🏼
Check if the carpets are damp. That car's letting in water, or a leaking heater matrix.
I was thinking the same.
The last heater matrix leak I had the water was dripping off the red carpet onto my foot and when I took my socks off it had dyed my foot pink.
James, you’re killing it. Keep it up 👍
You need to be on tv. Your whole channel is just great cars and also affordable cars. All the best for the new year you desreve 300k subs this time next year 👍
They are not thermal events; they are rapid oxidation occurrences
Great car. Fantastic video. Keep up the good work.
Great series on the mid engine v8 Ferraris!! Now we all know that there's a Ferrari SUV coming so how about doing a new series on family friendly Ferraris(useable rear sits) 412 456 612 FF Lusso and so on before they gobba drop the SUV
The best edited and delivered car reviews on YT, absolutely love the format of your videos.

Very informative/enjoyable. Any chance we could have a similar series with some McLarens? Seasons' greeting & regards.
I own Ferrari 458 Spider and it is the best exotic car ever. Also they slowly appreciate in price, so I had to get on it.

I realized it was special from the beginning, ever since I saw it on the cover of Forza 4. Ive always loved it. And in retrospect, I was right as they went to turbocharged after this. This was the last street car from Ferrari that was overflowing with soul.
