    Maybe Jenna’s dad remembered that he had a friend named Z when he was younger when Jenna started acting up and he went through his version of this movie. Finally leading him to hang himself to save Jenna’s life just like Jenna realized that she has to do the same thing for her kid. So maybe Z will make his move again if the kid has a family. Z isn't gone. The mom didn't remember Z at all before, and that had no effect on whether or not he existed. Remember, Z left her for alone for years and said he would come back. That proves that he doesn't need anyone to "imagine" him into existence. Z can choose who he wants to appear to and interact with. The whole "she created him, so she can destroy him" is a complete red herring.

    • @FauxFoxPaw
      @FauxFoxPaw Před 3 lety +51

      I dont think I agree, Z exists on some level sure, probably in the mother's self conscious, but he definitely needed her son to believe in him to start effecting her life again. He wasn't there for years until the son started playing with him. Other than just because it's a horror, if Z didn't need belief to bring him forth, he would never have left the mom or even bothered with the kid.

Beth grew out of it, but Z still followed her, befriended her son so that she would remember him, and Z told her what she had to say to be able to see him “imagine Z”. Maybe it’s like a ritual thing to make him visible to adults that say it? Idk why she was able to see him in the playground tunnel then.

Tormenting her by perhaps just using the kid as a companion substitute, hence the boy saying goodnight to him as well. The "marriage" thing was a purely symbolic gesture as far as kids understand it. Remember that she promised him "plenty of kids", and she's unable to go anywhere now, obviously neither will it, since part of her promise is still not fully honored. I think that's supposed to be the hidden horror of it all - it needs more "kids" to believe in it (the ability to influence kids being the key component to the entity), and it seems the more people believe in it, the stronger and more physically "real" it becomes. :/

    My own theory is that Z is supposed to be an egrigori or a tulpa, a once-imaginary being who becomes partially real. Beth giving herself severe brain damage from the asphyxiation has destroyed the original Z, but Josh may end up recreating him in the future.
    What I don't get is why Z partially took on others' appearances in two of the scenes. In the bathtub scene, he is supposed to look kind of like Beth, but then he looks a bit more like the doctor in the kitchen scene.
    I originally took the ending to mean that Beth and Kevin's spirits are still around, sort of like how Beth's Dad was still in the house, but Josh also said goodnight to his pet toy just before whispering to Z.
    Does anyone remember the exact lines that Josh said at the end? I know he says goodnight to Mom, Dad, Aunty Jenna, and the toy, before whispering to Z. Did he say goodnight to his grandparents?

    • @iSkeleton
      @iSkeleton Před 3 lety +19

      Yeah his change is appearance is baffling to me. We see 3 versions of Z, the one in the tub, the drawing on the wall, and the one behind the doctor. I can't wrap my head around WHY his form changes every time. It's not like his features are exaggerated, it's actual changes in appearance. As far as we know Josh sees him as a hulking creature with slouching shoulders, but Jenna sees him in two vastly different forms. I don't understand why he changed his appearance 3 separate times, it didn't escalate from something either... it just changed. If the key to seeing Z is to "Imagine Z" then shouldn't all imagined versions of him be similar to some extent? Especially if he's imagined by the same person? The simplest answer is probably the correct one, the director changed his appearance to give the audience a quick scare so we never knew what was coming. But I don't think that's a satisfying answer for the audience.

    • @sigmacademy
      @sigmacademy Před 3 lety +23

      @@iSkeleton My idea about it is that each person (adult or kid) sees Z differently, which might explain the differences in look, but at the same time, if the mother forget how it looked, her first "re-introduction" to Z would have been the scary mural on the wall. Technically speaking, the creature SHOULD have remained visually consistent, unless you take into account that as an "imaginary friend", a kid's imagination would constantly be changing, which might explain the different "looks". The red eyes constantly remain the same, but I think that's merely a visual cue of the "imaginary friend" being evil, which is a misdirect, since the imaginary being isn't evil - it's based on the traumas of the person who created it. Plus, also take into account that Z's mood swings is a direct mirror to the mom's own feelings. My example for that is when she sulks at the table, you see Z has a similar attitude later on as well. And even that is questionable, since Z obviously influenced her negative even BEFORE her dad had the "event". So Z's origin is still a mystery. It's obviously not a location-bound entity, since it moves around; and it's not some kind of nocturnal creature, because it tore open the door's obstacles in broad day light. It's also not a spirit, because it can actually interact with the real world, and it's not drawing on rage (like feeding on fear or trauma) or negative emotion to manifest itself, so it doesn't fit into any conventional understanding of any other creature in cinematic history. I don't think it actually falls in the demon label, since it was neither summoned, nor infested anything or anyone or attempted to drive anyone to madness or worse. If anything, it had an almost child like mentality, and a temper that matched that. :/

      I think that in the end since Beth created Z her giving herself brain damaging effectively crippling herself also cripples Z. Especially since like how foundflix said they’re physically connected, if they’re physically connected then Beth crippling herself practically making herself harmless also makes Z useless and the reason why Josh acknowledged Z in the end is because he can still feel his presence there but Z is too weak to have any control over anyone

Like I can totally see the one protector friend fighting the other two, but failing because he's weaker or something and having to get the willpower from the kid, maybe from the parents as well as they figure out they're *real* and also that one of them is good? I dunno, it just sounds like a cool idea.

Therefore keeping her son alive so she could stay alive which would explain why her sister was even able to save the son cause Z was tryna get the mother down from the noose possibly making her son snap out the trance. The first time I watched it, I immediately got "abusive boyfriend" vibes - from the banging on the table and not wanting anyone else to have her, to the fact he had his way with her in the scene before breaking her phone. This is one of the creepiest movies I've ever watched not because of the visuals or the plot, so to speak, but because it's factual. So many people, women and men, deal with this kind of behavior in relationships, unable to get out. Being in that situation and sacrificing yourself for a child or loved one and then knowing you'll possibly never get to see them again BUT they'll be safe - that's very much real and horrifying.

    I had an imaginary friend named Stephen. He was either a tall man in a hat or a spider, depending on the day. He once woke me up when I was 5 and told me there was a monster in my room's closet and to scream, so I did. My parents ran in, didn't see anything, but let me sleep with them. Turns out, there was a fruit bat living in the walls and it was in my room that night and peed in my closet.
    Anyway, we moved states later that year and when my mom put me in the car, she told me not to worry, Stephen would meet us at our new home. I told her no, Stephen couldn't come with us, he lived here and couldn't come with us. She was like, okay, and said she assumed I was upset about the move. I never had another imaginary friend, and neither did my younger siblings.
    I'm assuming there's a correlation between which siblings have imaginary friends and age, but my parents bring up Stephen because my siblings, too young to remember him, would stare up to where I was staring, normally above the bedroom windows or by the kitchen entrance and laugh sometimes, even if I wasn't doing anything. I'd also just say random facts about the city or whisper to the corner a lot. I was a weird kid who grew up weird but stable.

    Just seeing this now! Awesome to see you tackle our little film.
    You pretty much nailed it throughout, I'd say that Beth is beyond 'not in great shape' and the likely lack of oxygen to the brain caused some severe brain damage. Did that get rid of Z completely? Who's to say? But at least for now, it seems that Josh is safe. Perhaps she's stuck in this waking comatose state keeping Z at bay with any of her remaining mental faculties.
    Really excited that you took the time to do this video, though! Hope you check out my next one!

    I've never really understood the "Imaginary Friend" thing. Does that thing happen often in US or something? I've never heard of anyone actually having one.
    EDIT: I've figured out why imaginary friends are not a thing here. It is considered an "Wrong development of functioning brain" (no joke, that's how the psychiatrist I spoke to described it), so basically it is considered developing mental disorder and is suppressed immediately.

      I didn't have an imaginary friend myself, and growing up with a Navajo grandma, she used to joke that imaginary friends were actually chindi (evil spirits) and you shouldn't pay them any attention at all. Maybe her dad was having a similar situation and killing himself was his way of getting rid of his imaginary friend who had come back to torment his daughter.

    Actually, he even said that the dad was frantic when seeing the psychologist. Plus with the image of him hanging himself. Like what she did in the end, I think Z keeps going down generations and so far no one in the family has been able to get rid of him permanently. Like her father had Z too when he was young.

    The fact that Beth's dad was more freaked out by Z than her mom and that he hung himself like Beth did makes me think that Z had been a part of his childhood too. It really feels like a cycle of this family being followed by like, a tulpa or something similar, and every generation it latches itself onto a new child.
