In The Unholy, a girl inexplicably gains the power to heal the sick after a supposed visit from the Virgin Mary that catches the attention from a down on his luck journalist. As strange and violent events start to occur, he wonders if these phenomena are the work of something more sinister. We're breaking down the story, including Jerry's arc to his newfound faith, just what the entity is and what it really wants, as well as explaining the ending.

If we look at the facts, Jaden isn't shown to attack and I don't think he would choose to as that would cause him to lose. Jaden is a lot of things but bad at card games isn't one of them. He wouldn't make a play that would cause him to lose when there are better alternatives.
So Jaden ends his turn. Yugi loses Slifer. The only monster Yugi has in hand that can be played is Kuriboh. Jaden has double lethal on board. I don't see how Yugi can win. Certain draws could change things but based on what cards we know are in play, Yugi has no way of winning whereas Jaden does. I honestly don't know why anyone would think Yugi has a chance here. Literally everything points towards Jaden winning.
"But Jaden says he'll get stronger. Why would he say that if he won?"
Why would he say Gotcha if he lost? Both lines were likely written so as to not point to either result but if we're going off what cards are in play, Yugi can't win the duel.

Wow, a movie about demons that actually acknowledges action from God as well! It’s like normally only the demons and Satan are busy and the angels are all just sitting around getting high with Jesus.

The problem is that God is waaay too overpowered so writers usually sidestep the issue otherwise demons would be completely powerless and pathetic
If they’d used a little less CGI that monster could have been really cool, it’s a good design

Alot of the stuff probably could have been done with practical effects. It's always awesome when you find out that the director wanted to do as much practical as possible.
the monster looks genuinely so stupid with that cgi, i'm always in favor of cgi when needed to help yourself out since there is so much that can be done with but if you're going to use it then make sure the end result won't be... that

@@goldbirdcages good cgi just really needs a high budget and very skilled artists to be pulled off right when it comes to live action movies, so they really should just stop trying to use it when they can't afford to make it look right and it's just so disappointing to see, it has so much potential but it's like they don't ever wanna use it right :/ cgi isn't a quick workaround when you're too lazy or can't afford to use real effects, is its own category of special effects that deserves as much care and effort put into it as practical effects do

I think you may have gotten this one wrong. The closing scene, after the quote, shows the statues eyes start to bleed again as they did when Mary first used her powers earlier in the movie. This suggests she lives on and it was she who healed Alice to ensure she could return at a later time.
Yeah like wasn’t the whole thing him being like you can never return cause Alice your descendent is dead. But then she isn’t so…… she can come back now right?
Healing requires a soul so it wouldn't make sense for him to make a deal to heal her. The girl got healed because she offered her own soul at the beginning of the movie. Her being revived was a legit miracle. As for the crying Mary, it happens when there's an "unholy" nearby so that means the demon isn't entirely banished. The demon wasn't sealed in a doll or something so in a sense, she still lives on.
For me, god healed Alice, but doing so, the monster could keep "living" thus there is an unholy around and Mary started to cry blood. But you are right, for the first time, at least i recognised for the first time, he got the ending unfinished.
even without watching the movie, how he said the movie ended sounded weird. I was thinking that there must be some nonsense last scene where they leave a creepy cliffhanger, it's a staple in every one of these movies. thx for confirming my thoughts.

ok hear me out, this is just another earth in the supernatural universe, one where, Sam and Dean never existed, where John took up journalism and never met Mary, but however he still went on his "hunting" trips all by himself, but when he does his journalism job, he didn't take the impala out, he changes his name to seem more professional when he is making a story. that's why he knew what to do/ panicked when the demon showed itself, but only brushed it off, because he knew what he was dealing with- but hey, that's just a theory

Supernatural did do an episode of this it was literally the episode where the wife of the sideshow preacher captured a reaper who was actually going after her husband but in turn got reaped instead

The movie does an excellent job of showing the Catholic Church’s investigations of shrines and miracles (from what I’ve seen here, I haven’t watched the movie). However there is another requirement that wasn’t listed and isn’t as mainstream as the three listed, the miracle MUST be recognized as not being done via an evil entity or spirit. That’s literally the only issue I had with that whole issue.
The Catholic Church covers ALL bases when it comes to this stuff, and it’s never as quick as the movie makes it out to be, but hey, Hollywood did pretty good.
Its always been kinda interesting to me how much the church investigates before they do certain things. I recall their investigation before they will do an exorcism also being quite extensive

Excellent comment. In addition, the true Virgin Mary would never ask to pledge your soul to her. That would be the first and only sign needed by a Catholic to realize something is amiss. She is the Mother of God, not God. You honor Mary, not worship her as you do her Son.

The Catholic church is very skeptical of "miracles" and will only recognize an event as a miracle after a barrage of testing and attempts to debunk, replicate, or otherwise explain it.

@go away nah that's not it. The Catholic church uses faith based reason to discern what is and isn't a miracle. The church will routinely go back and retest artifacts and concepts that they previously considered miraculous. This way they try not to be like every other two bit evangelical who claims Jesus is on their toast or venerate fake idols such as the shroud of Turin.
@go away For example incorruptability used to be seen as a miraculous sign of sainthood. However as people learned what causes decay, and the body of one particularly terrible priest was found to be incorruptible the church reevaluated their position.

I never liked the typical horror ending of "Everyone dies and everything is horrible forever", so I actually like this ending. Its hopeful. Man comes out stronger after facing the evil.

I swear everything I have seen Jeffery Dean Morgan in he has always played the character that starts off a bit asshole-ish but redeems himself. He is a great actor and fits those roles very well. From Negan in TWD to here as Gerald in The Unholy, he is just so amazing
I know its a total old school chick flick, but his performance in PS I love you is the first film that made me obsessed with him as an actor. He played a bad boyish character there too though in a way...his acting was so different there it took me ages to realize its the same actor xD

I feel like the trailer really ruined the film. At first, it was portrayed as a thriller with psychological undertones- but the trailer kind of seemed to give everything away. Not what I was hoping for, but it definitely could have been worse. So kudos

I'd love to see your take on A Dark Song, a British indie horror film that made some waves in the occult community: A woman mourning the murder of her child turns to an occultist who guides her through the Abramelin Working, a lengthy (and real) ritual that is supposed to culminate in the summoning of one's guardian angel, who will proceed to grant her wish, in this case, vengeance against those who murdered her child. But things unravel as the Working continues, as is to be expected with a ritual that involves being confined to a house with no contact with the outside world for 6 months straight. Great film, would love to see your thoughts.
What a fabulous movie! The last scene is spectacular ... wasn't expecting that.
I really like dark rendition of established characters so the idea of a horror movie with an Evil "Virgin Mary" strikes a chord with me. Bonus points for making her look like a corrupted version even if the reason is a bit hamfisted.
I actually like that they show her so often. Like, she feels like an actual character. But the CGI ruins it a bit. I really like the little knuckle thing she does because our girl has work to do!

Fun fact: This was filmed down the road from me, the Grist Mill and Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury, MA. They use that mill for a lot of movies and commercials. I remember hearing about this movie being filmed last year.

During Mary's carnage in town blood came out a statue's eye.. In the last scene right before the ending blood started coming out of the statue's eyes..I think it's a sign that Alice was not bought back to life by God but some other demonic entity ..

This is one of the alternate Earths where John didn't meet mary and went into journalism....before Chuck destroyed em all. He escaped his fate for a while, but the life still found him. Sub par movie made watchable by JDM.

Supernatural did an episode like this. Long story short; Wife captured a Grim Reaper, Husband (preacher) Preformed miracles. Dean almost died. Brothers able to release the Reaper and in turn GR took the wife’s Soul after the boys saved the day.

This movie is actually good, however I didn't like that the demon showed herself to the national television (kinda cheesy). I think if would have been nicer if the demon showed herself to few of Mary's followers in a private area or showed herself to the world (either of the extremes). Still good tho

I actually really liked the idea of the demon's design. She is scary, she has some personality, and I feel like she's more than just a force. But they really should have used less CGI and used her a bit more carefully.
The entire angle of the evil spirit was to harvest "faith". The more faith gathered, the more powerful it could become. It's both a form of idol worship masquerading as and piggybacking on true faith, and a power siphoning exercise in the same breath. Putting it on TV means getting a huge power boost in a relative short period of time. :/
I was EXCITED for this movie. To see it executed like this was such a let down. Not even just cheap jump scares, but REPEATED cheap jump scares. And I can't say I was very scared 'Mary' at the end at all.

When the devil does it, then it's all "he's pure evil." When god does it, suddenly it's "he works in mysterious ways."
I’m sure some Christians have some good faith rebuttals to this but yes the God “works in mysterious ways” one assumes God is really ineffectual or doesn’t care. Both equally terrible traits in a God. I’d love to believe in a divine being but things like this give me too much doubt

St John of the Cross said one should never seek out apparitions or visions.
On a related note: apparitions are pretty stringently investigated before they are approved, like what happened at Fatima in Portugal. Which is why stuff like Medjugorje doesn't get official approval and typically after some time the bad fruit will become visible, as is the case in Mostar diocese.

This whole movie is basically the reason why you should pray to God alone through Christ alone and NEVER pray to Mary or saints or angels.
Even when I talk to my dead grandmother, I always use God as a sort of intermediary because I am sort of superstitious. My grandmother would understand.
Yeah really surprising that it was spot on with Christian theology, especially when the girl was trying to goad people into submitting to her.
Jesus, yes, that guy that talked about forgiveness (a lot) and not judging (a lot) and taking care of others (a lot) and not being consumed by material things (a lot). Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. So don't be throwing stones at Catholics, worry about the plank in your eye and how you can be more Christlike your own self.

I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, so this movie was definitely on my list to watch. I was worried it was going to spoil the movie for me, but now that I know how it ends, I'm still going to watch it. LOL I love my happy endings!

:) Your introduction to this was so descriptive! Even better when you mentioned JDM! Why? It had mind flashing, imagining 3 long extended tv series, Supernatural (daddy JDM!) episodes put together into a movie ;D
this plot had a lot of potential. Shame that it went a pretty cheap route. The masked Mary was way scarier than her skeletal form as well. I imagine that this film deserves a remake or a similar movie with just more suspense horror instead of jumpscares
I've written you multiple times to do a throwback episode and do a Ending Explained for Michael Mann's "The Keep" for over a year. I'm shocked that the film hasn't been remade to be honest, it's literally a cult classic!

I saw this film with a friend. We didn't scream once. No lingering fear. Too many cheap scares, I left the theater with a headache. It would be better if they focused more on Mary's story. I want to know more about the monster and everything that lead her to the path she has chosen. Was it to gain recognition or did it start out genuinely wanting to help people but she went to the devil to do so.
