A cult creates a man out of pure thought, gave him a tragic past, then tell him all that pain is meaningless because he literally is three days old and THEN gave him the ability to warp reality, I'm pretty sure he would like to have so words with the people of the cult
TBH we don’t even actually know how this will turn out for the cult. This vessel isn’t catatonic like the previous one, meaning for all we know the guy could have killed them all after the credits rolled. Would certainly fit with the whole “aimless black chaos” thing.
I believe there are graphic novels on which this movie is based and I think the goal of the empty man/vessel is to spread and bring chaos to all reality or something lime that .
I think that's the entire point. The cult is blinded by the lure of extremist nihilism/atheism. They WANT to not exist anymore and the more sublime way of doing it is through the empty man. They more or less accomplished their goal.
They create James, but he's just a vessel for the Bhutan mountain deity. Remember the scene with the creature literally crawling into the James' mouth?
I thought it was an Antichrist propaganda movie but in boring style execution
Lots of Lovecraftian cosmic horror themes in here:
-Cultists
-Another sphere beyond reality (the dreamscape in lovecraft's terms)
-Mere contact with the old ones makes you go mad
-At the firesite, I am pretty sure they chanted "Nyarlahothep" at some point. In lovecraft lore, Nyarlahotep is the collective thoughts of the old ones in a bodily form. And it fits perfectly into this scenario.
If you look closely, you will notice black tentacles on the monster.
The monster looks like Nyarlahothep. I’ve been looking through the comments to see if anyone noticed that.
Some commenter say that the cult even chanted the Crawlling Chaos's name...
@@1118Areyes The Empty Man is the Protagonist...An empty person a souless vessel which is needed to embody the entity...Yes the Entity is Nyarlathotep...They even chanting Nyarlathotep around the fire in the camp....when the fire climbs to sky and he looks the sky like dizzy he then stare at them before turn his back...and you can clearly hear them spelling 3 times...NY-A-RLA-THO-TEP....NY-A-RLA-THO-TEP...NY-A-RLA-THO-TEP

Dude, the guy is the most competent protagonist I've seen in a horror movie.
On his second day when he wakes up by the foot noices, I actually wanted him to beat up the Empty man with his baseball bat.
And he actually turned the freaking lights ON when investigating weird noises in his house instead of stumbling around in the dark!! When that happened I was like "FINALLY someone is smart enough to turn the lights on!!!"

Yes. The empty man IS Nyarlathotep. I saw the beginning of this movie and was gobsmacked by the realistic reaction the guy had when getting stabbed. The delay as he didn’t yet comprehend what was happening then immediately panicking as it sinks in.
I have one question...
How do you actually know what that looks like?
@@xanmontes8715 lots of body cam footage.
At the end, before crawling inside of James, the Empty Man turns into an avatar of Nyarlathotep.
I thought it was just me. That thought so
I also was thinking this when the guy said the empty man was blackness and chaos, and that it was going to be a bloodbath.
Nyarlathotep is just the name your human mind projects onto a form deciphered by your human eyes.
Fritz Leiber proposes three interpretations of the character based on this appearance: the universe's mockery of man's attempts to understand it; a negative view of the commercial world, represented by Nyarlathotep's self-promotion and contemptuous attitude; and man's self-destructive rationality.

I feel like the Empty Man is just a construct of the “call to the abyss” phenomenon, where people get the overwhelming urge out of nowhere to fling themselves off a bridge, cliff or crash their car...
That would have made a much cooler villain/phenomenon than what the movie clumsily tried to portray tbh.
Agreed

@Chimino Pulverman oof. All I was saying is that it reminded me of the phenomenon. Not that I wanted to rewrite the movie and go for an Oscar....
Ooh yeah, It's like when you try to avoid knives as a kid because it temps you to do something to yourself with it. Like if at any second you could choose to stab yourself and end your own life just because you want to and actually can do. Fucked up kid.
I was so impressed by this especially seeing how the reception and performance of the film was underwhelming. It is a bit messy and convoluted and overlong, but man it is so thoroughly enjoyable and ambitious. I actually really liked the fact that the title only drops 25 minutes into the movie, I found it really bold and I think having a drawn out intro like that was interesting and if it was super short it would have felt pretty typical to me.
You should check out the story of how the movie was treated. Director got lucky with producers that understood his vision, producers got changed, new producers told him it was shit and to turn it into a 90 min slasher blockbuster to get some profit, he refused, and the new producers promised to kill the movie, thus the terrible trailers, the non-existent marketing, trailer being released a week before release, only like a week on cinemas, etc. I think Chris Stuckman did a video on this.
I *LOVED* this movie. Thought it would be a Slenderman deal, but was pleasantly surprised. It was very ambitious and upon the second viewing, it was even better. So much bridge symbolism. Camn we talk about how the hospital looks just like the Scientolgy headquarters??

1. James' surname, Lasombra, actually means "the shadow" in Spanish.
2. Pontifex means "bridge maker".
3. One of the folders in Camp Elsewhere is named "Quail/A" (Amanda Quail) which may also pertain to the concept of qualia - a term use to describe the nature or content of our subjective experiences.
I don't think they actually manifested him at all, that was a false reality they created in his mind by breaking him down. That is the meaning of the line about repeating your name until it's gibberish. His trauma was real and necessary to complete the ritual, they just needed to mould him into an empty vessel through 'gibberish'. That's also the significance of the scene where he sees himself on the gantry - that is him accepting his new role in their reality. They used triggers like the bottle repeatedly, and told him he was the empty man, until he became the empty man. Plenty of other symbology such as the shaven heads and repeated mantras of the cult also hint at this being the true meaning, imo.
I like this interpretation. The death of his wife and son seemed to be presented as real, so I can't fully commit to the idea they only existed as false/created memories.
What about when two of him were in the place at once?

That is quite an interesting thought.
The whole solipsism thing is actually a mindset I’ve fought off and on for a long time. Yes, really sad that this movie did not get more attention.
I never saw it but after watching this it 1) Sounds exactly like my kind of movie and 2) I can totally see why it did so poorly and was review bombed. The trailer is edited to imply you're going to get a standard paranormal romp but you instead get existential dread tinged with hints of nihilism and Lovecraftian elements. It's no wonder it was so lambasted because almost everyone went in expecting a turn your brain off haunted house simulator and you go...well...this instead. In the end we can probably blame that on Hollywood execs, they are LOATHE to portray a niche film for what it really is in trailers because they know it will perform poorly in sells, even if misrepresenting it gets it blasted critically. Lamb comes to mind as a similar style of a trailer that MASSIVELY misrepresented its actual content and tone.

Just want to point out when Lasombra asks Garrett, “Where’s Amanda?” He tells him, “She’s on the bridge.” When Lasombra later finds Amanda, she’s sitting on Paul, who is their current bridge to the noosphere.
This movie wasn't that special. I've been an empty man for years (':
Many men knows the feeling. The wife filed for divorce and took atleast half. then the courts stole the kids.
The empty man.

I’ve been a hungry man for decades
A very weird movie, but maybe the most relatable protagonist to the audience I’ve ever seen.
Felt bad for the guy at the end. None of his memories were real but they still meant so much to him.
Absolutely love the 25min opening. Feels different, great soundtrack, dig it. It's almost up there with Hereditary and Midsommar... For me at least✌️
@Meat Clown Sure TF Did😫😹
I thought that too. I has this new modern horror feel to it. One could say happened in the same universe.
@Meat Clown Yeah, Hereditary and Midsommar were trash. They reminded me of The Beach House. It feels similar to them, but it's waaaay better.
Who else is here because of the Chris Stuckmann review. I saw Chris review the movie and I wanted to learn more
With you. Watched it on PPV same night I saw him mention it. Def a Stuckmann type flick, solid 6/10. Not the best thriller of the year but watchable flick.
Movie was pretty good actually. A lot more substance than the usual horror
Same thing exactly happened to me. But what form did David take in the end? I mean, just like that, he'll continue to exist as James Lasambra and walk among the living? That's the thing that still confuses me.
Me too!
It was that combined with a reply to a Reddit post talking about some of the best cosmic horror movies they'd seen. I'm a big fan of cosmic horror and find that good representations of it (especially in movies) are extremely few and far between, so I had to check this one out to see if it was any good.
As soon as i started watching this my light started flickering. If I don't reply to this comment tomorrow know that I am dead and that my search history has been cleared.

@@desert6975 ooooo plot twist!
It got a lot of the Lovecraftian aspects, a man with his own deep conflicts investigating an unearthly cult who want to bring chaos and end the world as we know it, represented in an ancient evil entity old as time.
My type of horror, when evil wins at the end 😂
Loved the movie and i also was misled by the title.
The performance of James Badge Dale was amazing.
Not enough Lovecraft monsters. Mostly moody atmospheric mystery. Cop goes from A to B to C investigating a cult and then becomes the vessel for Satan. Same kinda nonsense we've seen countless times but still not terrible.
so I finally watched this and... wow. it was really awesome. totally underrated. the last ten min or so were so surreal, haunting and tragic. that's gonna stick with me for a while.
Scariest thing of this movie is that she has a bowl cut that’s not styled
How do you even style a bowl cut 🥴 its still gonna look like.. a bowl glued to your head 😭
Feminist screeching ensues.
Thank youuuuu
She look like a sentient pp.

Okay but the girls thought of bringing things into existence with a lot of thought is BS. I know a guy whos one goal is to have sex with Ahsoka Tano and that one man can disprove her theory
That sounds fascinating
Can you elaborate?
By any chance is he on ifunny?

Even out of ifunny i cant escape him
My favorite part from this movie was when the cult members in the woods started chasing down the main character and when he escaped he literally started asking "What the f*ck!?"
Also, I think the reason why they blow into a bottle is because the bottle is suppose to represent the empty man. If we look at all the bottles (+ the bone we see at the start of the movie) we all see they are hollow (for the bone) and empty (for the bottles). So...It was a nice little thing they did there.
Of course this is explained in the video so if any of you skipped this awesome video and you where still asking "WhY DO TheY bLOW intO a BOTTle!?" now you *probably* know.
I had to skip this video. I could not stand listening to this person’s voice another second
Don't know if you changed your editing but I found myself feeling more entertained while watching your video. 👍
I was waiting for this. This movie started out so interesting to me. The intro felt like a completely different and better movie than the rest of the film.
I'm really proud that I already knew what a Tulpa was from Supernatural
What is it?
I was wonderig the whole movie what Sam an Dean would have done 😂
I knew what it was before that even 😅
Those early seasons of supernatural were pretty cool, the wendigo one was creepy
I really needed this thank youuu
Plot twist: this is lovecraft and the empty man is nyalathotep.
or "The Trumpeter" by Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński

You know it's gonna be a good night when Foundflix makes a video on a movie you've never seen before and it looks cool

@Black Liberalman I don't even.. Like.. what are you on about?
What- just why
Damn I had to pause at 5 minutes like wait there's more movie. That bit up in the mountains could have been an entire movie by itself, man I can't wait to finish this video to see how convoluted this gets.
Did you enjoy the rest of the convolution?
Could someone help explain why the empty man needs to kill? Why did all those kids hang themselves? What is Amanda's role; is she some kind of leader? No kidding when FoundFlix said this is like many movies in one. I felt like I saw one ending and at least two other movies unresolved.
im like 1 hour 30 mins in and i feel like its too long already.
@@slevinchannel7589 im just curious why is it pathetic and what relevance does this hold to the conversation above

For those of you that listen to audio books theres a creepypasta reading titled "The man in my basement moves one step closer every week" by Lighthouse horror (I think. I have a bad memory) its 5+ hours long but it does have a thing or two in common with this movie. I dont wanna tell you because that would be a spoiler. But its an amazing story and I recommend listening to it at some point
Honestly, this sounds like a perfect Lovecraftian horror movie. Like, the entire thing reeks of cosmic horror. You could almost fit this into the written anthology alongside The Call of Cthulhu or The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
The movie was decent. It’s quite convoluted and a little all over the place but it kept me intrigued so I guess that’s a positive
You get the best sound from blowing into a bottle when it is empty. Empty bottles resonate with their entire frame. In a way, it is bringing something (sound) from nothing (empty bottle) through blowing (human action) air (invisible but real).
Kind of a smart link. The bridges are related to both the bottles and emptiness symbolism. They are an easy allusion to a journey or connecting things, but in this case, bridges are the spaces between things. If you are on a bridge between the mainland and an island, you aren't on either. You are in an empty area surrounded by nothingness. The space between here and there.
As for the bottles, bridges are almost always spanning a chasm of some sort. The chasm creates pressure on either side as the wind blows through it, which increases the speed of the wind. Rivers cut through rock because they are forced through a narrow passage and pressurized. Chicago is called the Windy City because skyscrapers form an alley that makes the wind incredibly powerful. Maybe the area has always been windy, but the buildings form a channel that increases the speed and power of the wind to a point where it can knock you down on a bad gust.
Bottles require air flow over them to make sound, and bridges have increased airflow around them that mirrors the increased air flow of blowing into a bottle.
Neat.
When I havent eaten and its 2pm already *the empty man*
Underrated comment
This movie was so weird, not a single horror movie made me feel so depressed, it started like a very cliche and conventional horror movie but at the end it change to a very sad, psicological and existencial horror, I feel very bad for the protagonist
