  • Any Old Port. Captain Cockle has been kicked out of his lighthouse by a mysterious stranger with an odd fixation on his very unusual plant. Just who is this Tabatha, and could she possibly be related to Tallulah? And what's with the dusty old board game in the curiosity shop? This series curtain-raiser was first broadcast on Tuesday, 2nd January, 1990.
    Even the least observant of viewers will have noticed that we have a new T-Bag on our hands, so before we go any further, let's sort out the timeline for the change. By all accounts, shooting wrapped for series five in the autumn of 1988, and there was talk at the time of Elizabeth Estensen moving on - but nothing concrete. This uncertainty continued into the beginning of 1989 (when the aforementioned was broadcast), and was still in place while the 1989 Christmas special was being written that May. Series six was commissioned in June, and work had to begin on that, too, without the writers knowing who their lead actress was. By the end of the month, shooting began on T. Bag's Christmas Carol, and it was at this point that Elizabeth sadly confirmed her decision that it was to be her last outing on the show. And, so, writing continued on series six and the choice was made at this point to create the brand new character of Tabatha - all still without knowing who would be playing her. Finally, though, everyone was put out of their misery in mid-July as executive producer Alan Horrox informed the production team that Georgina Hale had been cast, to everyone's delight and relief. Just over two weeks later, the first read-through for Pearls of Wisdom took place, and barely a week on from Elizabeth's final special being broadcast on Boxing Day, Georgina's debut (i.e. this) was aired.
    Given all of the above, I think it's a real blessing that Kellie Bright returned for this series. I'll stop short of saying it saved the show or anything, but if not for Sally Simpkins, then John Hasler would have been the one and only common thread from the previous years (on screen, anyway). A new girl on a quest at this point might well have been one too many changes at once, and possibly would have made it a lot harder to accept it as the same programme. That said, I'm glad beyond measure that they created Tabatha rather than re-casting Tallulah - that would have been a disaster, no matter who they'd got in!
    Anyway, I like the fact that Sally and Thomas are now friends in the real world, which I suppose makes perfect sense following on from Revenge of the T. Set (which is nicely referenced, incidentally). Unlike the previous series, the board game setting gives a perfect excuse for the trademark cardboard cut-out sets we all know and love. Also new are the fact that we're treated to a preview of what's to come next week at the end complete with dramatic voice-over, and the colours. By which I mean, there's something technically different with the colour of this series, isn't there? I just can't quite put my finger on what, but something is different about the look of the show. Or did it even begin with series five? Or is it all my imagination? Anyone?
    Keep an eye out for some continuity presented by Jeanne Downs and Scally at the beginning and end, plus an ad break that I've left in to give you that full retro feel. Don't miss Anthony Head playing the smoothie.
    Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.

    Elizabeth Estenson was great as the original t-bag and she was an amazing actress, BUT, I think Georgina Hale kicked this series off very well and she had more aggression than liz which was good. I was 8 years old when this particular series was aired on TV and I still think its a great show today. Captures the imagination unlike a lot of the crap on tele these days! Was a great children's tv series! Elizabeth will always be my favourite as she will be to other people as well but I do think Georgina did a cracking job as well.

    02:48 Awww poor Scally. Mentioned the wrong T.Bag's name straight away. He was meant to say 'Tallulah' not 'Tabitha' who Jeanne Downs mentions correctly. No need to guess that the Duckula episode that was coming on afterwards was 'The Mysteries of the Wax Museum' from Series Two. :)

      Good deduction on the Count Duckula episode! Also, I'm pretty sure this is Jeanne Downs's first day as full-time CITV presenter - were they having a bit of a pop at Jerry (who'd already left) at the end? I think it was good-natured. I hope so...

    I was 13 when this series was broadcast. I loved the programme so much, and remember that when Elizabeth Estensen was replaced by Georgina Hale, I just couldn't enjoy the show anymore, and stopped watching it. I considered Tabatha to be a poor man's Tallulah- she had no spark, she spoke in a nasally way, she strung her lines together in a sing songy way that grated on my nerves, and she wasn't funny in the slightest. I literally could not stand this 'imposter'. I thought she was absolutely terrible and an extremely poor replacement for Elizabeth. So, it's going to be a big struggle, and interesting, to see if I can actually watch this adored series from now on from this point, even all these years later. Unfortunately, I still find my initial impression of the terrible Georgina Hale/ Tabitha still stands all these years later.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  Před 7 lety +4

      I think everyone's favourite T-Bag is the one you got to know first. Believe it or not, there are those slightly younger viewers out there who came to the show when Georgina was playing the lead, and they see Elizabeth as the poor man's Tabatha!
      Personally, I think series six is worth watching mostly because Kellie Bright is so good - and, broadly speaking, it improves the further you get into it thanks to Georgina settling into the character. Series seven is an improvement as the relationship with T-Shirt changes to suit Tabatha, series eight surprised me by its excellence, and series nine... well, that divides fans. I'll let you discover for yourself why, and then you can make up your own mind! But what I'm saying is stick at it. ;-)

    This cannot be 1990. John Hasler (T-shirt) was born in 1974. That means he would have at least been 15 here but looks more like 12.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  Před 6 lety +2

      I know what you're getting at, but it was definitely shot in the autumn of 1989 - the end credits carry that date at 22:56. The CITV continuity at the beginning also goes on about it being 1990, and that this is a brand new series with a brand new T-Bag. John 100% does look younger, though!

      He has bum fluff on his lip so you can see how much he has changed since the last episode of series 5 not unusual for a male to not go through puberty until 15 or 16. The series may have been filmed in early summer when Sally & John were not as school.

      @@VideotapeFTW I must admit, I was quite surprised to find that John Hasler was born in 1974, which makes him 10 going on 11 in the first series, where he could pass for an 8 year old. I think he probably just looked young for his age and so could play someone who was supposed to be a bit younger. I don't agree with the original poster though; I think he looks older than 12 in Pearls of Wisdom. You can tell the hormones have started to kick in. His voice breaks soon after this, in the Christmas special which can't have been filmed long after.
