Nigel Owens though....we need to clone him so he referees every match....I love(d) his ability to just cut through the crap and make sense to players and spectators alike. He just doesn't take any nonsense...that really is a skill in social interaction as much as totally understanding the laws of the game. I can only applaud and be grateful for seeing so many games refereed by a legend of the game.
You know, being an American that's never really understood rugby one single bit, this Nigel Owens guy seems to know the game pretty well. Seems he doesn't put up with any bullshit either.

Lets be honest, there were a lot of dud, grim games in Celtic League Rugby over the years, with the addition of few people in attendance. But in a way, I miss those games most (don't look at a lot of rugby now at all for lifestyle reasons). But sitting in on those cold, dark, grim NH nights, watching a bad game of rugby played to virtually empty stadiums, that was when rugby was fun. The commentators were relaxed and banter would flow and you had the added bonus of refs and players being heard due to small crowds Nigel always knew what he was doing. He was entertaining. He loved it. We loved it. Commentators loved having something to laugh about to.

Love the way rugby referees keep control. Why can't football (soccer) referees do the same?
This, and they explain their rulings clearly & concisely. Why can't RL (rugby league) refs be like this? The last one that comes to mind is Aussie NRL ref Bill Harrigan. He didn't take any BS from anyone, no matter who they thought they were.
1) The refs don't have microphones that you can hear on telly (last time I watched football that is)
2) Yellows or reds aren't given out often enough for disrespecting the referee
3) The professional football culture has become something where if a debatable decision happens, everyone sprints to the referee shouting and gets into the refs face, making it hard to control. In rugby, it is normal to only have the captain and person who did the incident to talk to the ref and they don't get shove-y in the refs face
The football referees are able to keep control and explain concisely. It’s the players and coaches that’s the problem. They shout at every decision and most of the time it’s nonsense. Do you ever hear a football player say „Sorry Sir“? That’s the difference
@@_chaitanyajoshifootball players would stop the massing of the referee if the ref was empowered to do one thing: yellow card for all players other than the one booked. It’s pure intimidation tactics when players mass the referee like that, and it should be treated as dissent.
@@SoftBank47 I completely agree with you. I’m a football referee myself and I know what it’s like to be attacked by masses of players. I also think the border for red cards should be lowered to be similar to Rugby

This conversation with the scrumhalf at 1:44. I’m not entirely sure on Nigel’s interpretation here. And if it’s that bloody complicated to explain, I’m even less sure.
Clearly, Nigel knows the laws far better than I do, but I do find the amount of latitude refs are given to apply their own interpretation of what constitutes the ball being “out” a bit misleading. Even at my (shit) level, every single pre-match briefing we have to clarify what that day’s ref considers “out” - and nearly every time it’s different. 🤷♂️
To me the problem was that the player was non-stop talking and wasn't listening to the referee when he explained the rule to him. Maybe it is complicated, but how would someone understand it if he is only interested in shooting their mouths off?
I'm thinking the 9 was barking about no call on offsides, or sending extra guys to hold the ruck when he had already picked up the ball. But that's a guess from a barely literate player.
It's about getting the ball out of the ruck, especially in the caterpillar. You're not supposed to play the ball with your hands in the ruck unless you're taking the ball out, hence why you largely see them dragging the ball to the back of the ruck with their feet; referees are happy to allow 9s a bit of freedom if the ball is trapped to make it available and speed the game up especially if the other team is slowing the ball, but if the ball is available then the 9 shouldn't be handling the ball until they're picking it up to start the next phase - and here the scrum half had been taking some liberties or possibly trying to milk some penalties by handling but not lifting the ball.
