  • I bought the cheapest Jaguar S-Type R in the nation. After searching Craigslist, eBay, and wholesale auctions for a day this one popped up right down the street from me. It makes 400HP, 400ft/lbs of torque, powered by a 4.2L Eaton supercharged V8, driving the rear wheels through a ZF 6 speed automatic transmission. This car is as loaded as it could be in 2003, navigation, touch screen infotainment, cd changer, and power everything. The R package adds the hand built supercharged V8, upgraded styling, 18" alloy wheels, and bigger brakes.

    A few things to note about the S-type.
    1) Get the gearbox serviced ASAP. Jaguar say it is sealed for 'life', but Jag specialists in the U.K. recommend a full service (replace sump, sleeve, and sump bolts, should all come as a kit) every 80K miles or so. you MUST use the correct ZF transmission fluid - you have been warned.
    2) If the battery is not in tip top condition it will light up the dash like a Christmas tree, giving you false errors including gearbox going into limp mode. This can also happen if the alternator is on it's way out.
    3) Take off the plastic cover sills and check out the condition underneath. These rot out from the inside.
    4) Dirty/worn/faulty ABS sensors can throw multiple errors, disabling the DSC and ABS systems; and also gearbox errors. Usually a cheap fix unless the reluctor rings are corroded on the rear hubs.
    5) The multi link suspension has numerous bushes that can wear out. The car weighs in at about 2 tons so this is a common fault.
    Hope you enjoy your Jag. These are becoming quite rare now in the UK and prices are rising. I have a lowly 2.7 twin turbo diesel and its just fabulous.

      You seem like u really know what ur talking about..i have an s type that starts throwing out gearbox faults but only in the winter..what do u think is the cause of this from all the possible issues youve mentioned? Also from this issue the gearbox lever gets stuck in park and i have to manually unjam it..than i let the car sit for about 2 minutes and the fault is gone..Ive taken it to over 30 mechanics here in canada..not a single one of them has given the insight that u have..and 3 of them were so called jaguar specialists lol

    • @FunkmeisterOfSedgley
      @FunkmeisterOfSedgley Před 5 lety +10

      @@georgethinks9431 I would say this is probably battery related. I've had these issues before, and even though the car will start fine, if out put from the battery is only slightly low, the ECU throws lots of errors. Batteries have to work a lot harder when it's cold. Also your gearbox oil will be more viscous when cold, so if it is old, that could throw the odd issue. If you're on Facebook there are a couple of really good groups based in the UK for the S-Type. That's where I picked up my knowledge. I'm no longer on FB though.

Thanks for ur help btw

    • @FunkmeisterOfSedgley
      @FunkmeisterOfSedgley Před 5 lety +4

      @@georgethinks9431 when it is very cold I experience a reluctance from the gearbox to change up, but this lasts for just a couple of minutes while the transmission fluid warms up. If your car has a 6 speed ZF transmission the gearbox needs to be serviced approx 80k miles. There's a video on this, I'll see if I can dig out the link. As for a battery, make sure you get one that's at least as well spec'd as the OEM battery. The Jag battery on my car lasted 12 years!

    Some Handy stuff:
    - When you push and hold (3-5 sec) the unlock button on the key fob all windows and sun roof open.
    - When you push and hold the lock button on the key fob all windows and sun roof close. (MY2002.5 & up dealer activated)
    - At anytime during either process you can tap the button again and they stop at desired location. (btw, once they start to move you can let off the button.)
    - The global lock/unlock button on the center console will also open or close all windows to desired location depending on how long you hold then button.
    - Apparently you can program you key fob so with one push of the unlock button all doors will unlock. You do this by first pushing and holding the lock button on the key fob until you hear a beep, then push and hold the unlock button on your key fob until you hear two beeps.
    - To access Engineering Test Mode you push and hold the button on the left stalk while turning the key to position 2, keep it pressed in until the display read "Test Mode". You can start the car and do this while running, or not. You cycle to different parameters by pressing the k/mp button of some Jag's. or the button on the left stalk on others, (like mine)
    - Remove your cup holder to find a hidden compartment, also makes for a bigger cup holder. (Open the center console, and tilt the cup holder forward while pulling up.)
    - Navigation systems, to enter the diagnostic menu you press and hold the Phone and Menu buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds. Then enter PIN 917. With code 1971 you Get an extra button with even more options. (Never push the update buttons, screen will go black and stays black)
    - Press and hold the Recirc button until you hear a double beep. This keeps it in Recirc until YOU shut it off.
    - Powerfold door mirrors, with the rocker switch centered, briefly press the dial switch rearward to fold both mirrors back. Only if you have power folding mirrors
    - Press and hold the EPB paddle down as you shut off your engine and remove the key. This will prevent the Auto Engagement of the Electronic Parking Brake. (Changing brake pads
    -sick of the noise when unbuckling your seatbelt? Turn the key in position 2, within 60sec buckle and unbuckle the drivers seatbelt 9 time. You will hear a chime and when you unbuckle while driving there will be no noise.
    -Weak battery equals Christmas style gauge cluster

    Glad to see you with a proper JAAGGGG! Grew up around Jags and have tons of useless knowledge on the brand, though we've, my family, have never purchased anything but XJ's and XK's. We've had three Super V8s and one had over 250,000 miles before a teenage girl was texting and driving ran into it. A good locksmith should be able to program the remote portion once you locate one. The power pedals could be a fuse, but most likely an ECU issue or dead motor. I would think your sunroof is fine, seeing that we haven't had issues with any Jag sunroof since they switched to the glass units. The ZF, sadly, wasn't the best thing ZF has ever strapped in Jags. Leaving the toggle on Auto should also slide your seat back as well as tilting the wheel up and in when you turn of the car off. There is no master for your cruise... You just set it... It's that easy. I didn't realize that DSP was included in models without the Rear Entertainment Package. All the XJ we had, 5-of them, from the era had RSES (rear seat entertainment system) and the DSP helps because you can assign the sound to the rear seats, after all thats who's watching the screens. In 2000, could be 2001, Ford switch Jag's stereos from Harman Kardon to Alpine. THIS WAS A HUGE DOWNGRADE! I was a 97 X300 VDP and the H/K is way better than the Alpine in our 2005, 2006, and 2008. The Wizard should be able to get all of this sorted out. Jags aren't overly complicated and can be a ton of fun as far as daily drivers go. The Supercharged V8 is one of the best sounding engines IMO.

    • @WatchJRGo
      @WatchJRGo  Před 5 lety +1

      I'll try all the remote programming myself first, then hit up a locksmith. The pedals make noise but don't move, maybe I can free that motor up. I'll bet the farm and test the sunroof lol, I hope you're right! Leaving the transmission solenoid to the Wizard. A few people mentioned the cruise just needing set, it must disable when the transmission is in limp mode. I'm sure you're right about the Harmon to Alpine being a downgrade, it sounds okay at best. I do love the sound! 🎶

The weak points on the cars are the battery’s so good you got that changed as can really cause havoc. I’d advise you to get you’re gearbox serviced and also supercharger oil change as makes massive improvement on performance. Gearbox is the first big project, and supercharger oil is always a fun one, at least it's easy on the Eatons. get your sat nav a software update it made a hell of a difference to mine remember these cars had a long life cycle and the sat nav was in other cars upto 2012 so there where a few differences between the factory nav and the updates
    plus you can buy a board (JAGDROID) That allows you to switch to android and back to stock with the press of a button! i think its less than 100 pounds
    also the subs are below the rear parcel shelf you can remove them and put others in there place keeping it looking stock also the door speakers are easily upgraded no adapters needed

    I bought one for 2k, a 2003 S-Type 3.0 v6, so its not an R but still. Wouldn't ya know it tho, needed a few new sensors, water pump, battery, coil packs, and the drivers side exhaust is hanging. Just needs some wiring tho. 18 gallon tank and it costs about 40-50 to fill w/premium depending where you buy it. These cars are very nice, smooth rides that will last if you're willing to do all the small work thats not worth shop costs, save that money for things like the gearbox or if your throttle body goes out which seems common so far as I've heard.

I work at a Kia dealership and we gave the guy $1000 for the trade value and it was pristine, just had 175k miles on it. Cost me $1600 with taxes and I still drive it till this day with no issues at all. I did have to replace the battery, but other that that this car is solid and strong and looks like a $10-$12k car. The $1600 I paid was a small risk to take for a beautiful car like this.

    There's no master switch for cruise on Jags. Just press the '+' when you reach your chosen speed. These Ford era Jags are pretty reliable, just be wary of underbody rust at this age, and the valley coolant pipe, conveniently hidden under the supercharger! Hope the gearbox turns out to be a cheap fix.

    Hello,I love and enjoy driving my Jaguar S-Type R. It's the oldest car I've driven. However, When I purchased the Jaguar 5 years ago, it didn't have a 1000,000 miles, it only had 56.000 and I paid much, much more then $3.000 for it, as you did yours. Moreover, It just recently turned over 1000,000. I receive more compliments on the Jaguar then I ever did on my 1 year old Mercedes Benz E Class. (( no joke.)) I plan on always keeping my Jaguar S - Type R. Hard to believe, back in the day they were $60.000. I'll add pic. The paint-job on the Car is sooooo shiny, you could use it as a mirror. Oh, one last thing.... My Jaguar from what I understand, was ordered from the, Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham, England by an attorney in Dublin, Ga. Thanks for the video.Robert Preston Higgins

    The s type was my first jaguar. I settled for the v6 b/c I came across one that was in that gorgeous powder zircon blue..it also was fully loaded w/ every option. I paid $6k ..it was only 11 yrs old and had 80 something thousand miles on it. That was a pretty good deal..I couldn’t pass up. The whole thing ended up being a mess..the dealer kept postponing sending me the title. I paid in full. Needless to say he got sued ..he was scamming several buyers and his lot got shut down. Months later I received the title. The car wasn’t taken well care of mechanically. I didn’t know anyone who specialized in them at a responsible cost. I ended up having it for a short 10 months. I loved the car ..it was gorgeous. I’d get compliments on it everyday and everyone made the biggest deal out of it. I was like “thanks ..but it’s not a new car lol” my grandmom ended up passing away. She left me some money. A yr later I came across a jaguar XJ8 super v8 edition. (Highest trim level ..combo of the R and Vanden plas) the car brand new was $100k from palm beach. I had to have it. So u could say it was given to me “for free” lol. I didn’t pay anything for it. I still hav it yrs later..I hav a mechanic who works on it. I take really good care of it. I’d never sell it. They are such a rewarding car as I’m sure u know. The XJ8 is my spare..I only take it out on nice days. I want an s -type in addition ..but this time only in the v8...I want a 1 owner w/ hardly any miles on it.
    Sorry thought I’d share.
    Hope u still have it and r enjoying it!!!
