No doubt about it. One thing I always enjoy about him is he never seemed to want to try to compete with the Jeremy Clarkson type of vehicle review. He did his own thing(partly because he pre-dated Jeremy Clarkson). So his method always feels so much more authentic than the vast majority of vehicle reviewers who came after Jeremy Clarkson.
It really helps he's a professional driver and has some serious skills. You can really trust his reviews. As a sports car owner myself I appreciate his angle very much.

That BMW is still ‘on the road’ although it’s barely been driven in its life. The number plate is still on it and its only ever needed tyres for the MOTs by the looks of it.

@@singh2702 the S62 Engine is pice of shit in terms of reliability and now even the 2nd hand market is empty as a source for S62 blocks which all will have a cylinder wall burnt under the gasket or scratches due to high oil consumption because of bad piston rings. Most of the M5 E39 nowadays are either garage queens or already got their einigen repaired many times (mostly cheap, as the majority of bmw-wankers can’t afford an engine repair more expensive than the car itself). Jaguars AJ 4.2 SC einige is one of the most reliable engines ever with almost no flaws (well the timing chain has to be replaced someday) and the rest of the car is technically way more solid than the M5. I’m not a Jag Fanboy, but owned an M5 2012-2014 and sold it for parts.
I love these old jaguars, i had a ‘03 stype 3.0v6 with the 6spd almost fully loaded. Although it wasn’t a problem free car but it has always started and never let me down. Loved the look and the comfort so much. I got a ton of good compliments from the people all the time on a daily bases. My favorite was when the small kids got frozen then started to waving with a huge smile on their faces. Just only for that itself was worth thoes hafty service bills what i always had. Still love and miss the car and have zero regrets. The s type is a timeless and beautiful car and would buy it again.
Comparing the Jaguar S-Type R to any German super sedan from BMW/Audi/Mercedes is unfair to the Jag. But comparing it to the E39 M5 falls under terms that violate the Nuremberg agreement of cruel and unusual punishment. For my money, that specific BMW is among the 3 greatest sedans ever made(and top 20 greatest vehicles regardless of class) in the history of the automobile. Thanks for posting this!
Not really, the 4.2 in this Jag is Supercharged change the pulley get 2.5lbs more boost, and flash the ecu. That's next gen M5 performance right there. And it's so much more reliable.

I recently got to drive my friends e39 M5. Man was it fast and a huge joy to drive. I have an 89' 325i convertible and it felt surprisingly similiar to my car. Shifts felt identical, steering felt the same, clutch the same...😂 It was just faster
All E39s with V8 engines have different type of steering rack which is objectively less infomative, than the one on inline-6 models, whats why it feels as slow and non-responsive as the one on your E30 (as long as you have an original steering rack, as many E30s steering racks are swapped for E36 ones, which is way more infomative).
@@datsoon9236 Z3 rack is an E36 rack, Z3s internal code is also E36. The whole front part is an E36 unit. The rear one is almost identical to e30, as the E36 compact.

I had an S Type R back in the day and the supercharger never made a noise like that. It was totally reliable and covered circa 430k before the tin worm got a hold.
If Jaguar would have put a limited slip differential in the S-Type R, and at least an option for a manual, this would have been much, much closer. I honestly do not understand why Jaguar went with an open differential.
Gentleman's rocket ship with predictable manners is my guess. And while Tiff didn't mention it this car had the 'fake' LSD in the form of active TCS which essentially clamped the wheel spinning with the brake.

Tiff Needell should have learned how to use the J-gate of S-type R. The J-gate is( was) very convenient feature to select gear manually in automatic gearbox. The 2nd and 3rd gear selection in the J-gate is essential to achieve a performance ride properly.
This was a different version to what you're thinking of I think - I drove a couple of XJRs in the straight 6 days, and a 6 litre XJS, all with 2nd and 3rd on the J-gate. The one in Tiff's car here has 2nd, 3rd and 4th on it though, which a couple of people have said to me was much less accurate for gear selection as there wasn't really a detent on 3rd so it was a bit vague

However, the gear position is not only sensed by gear knob's geographical location , but also by the rpm and the vehicle speed. If you want to select the the 2nd gear, just move the gear knob to the most front position and done. Meanwhile I have a 23 year old s type 4.0 in the real world. Goes up hills just fine. Had it 5 years. Paid next to nothing for it and went through its MOT with no advisories. Type R road tax isn't very interesting. Never owned a BMW but not that I wouldn't.

This is a lot different than apples and oranges. More like a croquet mallet and a golf club comparison and recently comparing 2006-08 basic s type and 5 series , the Jaguar won the contest for a low mileage, low price ride for doing a coast to coast U.S.A. road trip. I’ve read that 750 2008 s type r autos were made and two local examples came up on Facebook Marketplace recently. Comparing these 2008 models, the BMW is from another planet of modernity. Not wanting to give more money to Saudi Arabia than required, the V6 Jag was sensible. I drove a 1988 BMW 325 ie for many years and still love our 2005 BMW 325 ci convertible but my 64 year old hard working back would not drive either from NY to LA. The most fun at speed I ever experienced was top speed in a brand spanking new 1966 Corvette. Can we see a M5 - Vette go at it? Kidding.😃
I prefer the M5 naturally aspirated grunt over that mosquito buzzing supercharger whine. I own a 2006 CLS55 AMG Kompressor and the supercharged engine is more gruntty then whine. That buzzy whine would drive me nuts.

I an a lowly 528i for a while. Very refined, sensible with fuel, and very reliable. I've not own a Jaguar. I think an M550d X-drive Touring with automatic transmission would suit me perfectly. Does BMW make one? Not that it matters since I am not in the market for a £60,000 plus car. I simply don't have the means to spend £60,000+ on a car.
@@paulanderson7796 I am currently driving a M52 pre-TU. You are absolutely right it's just on the edge of being too slow, I'd prefer about 20% more power. But I love it. It just feels like an engine should. It loves the revs and sounds like it too. I've never seen another "sensible" engine giving that sense of sportiness. I'll be putting in sportier cams, headers and ITBs next year in hope for just the right amount of added power.

But I don't need that kind of lateral grip. I am a road driver not a track driver. The E39 530i and 530d would have been pick of the pack if I was buying now. V8 engines don't appeal to me, but there's no dispute that the 540i was fast.

@@dariog36th agree e6x are the worst. e60/61 (v10) m5 is still legendary for its sound and top end output, not its daily driver reliability. Even the e36, 38, 39's had to be fitted with upgraded cooling systems to make them last. Again most would say their prime was in the e3x gen but they didn't just go to shit after that. People argue that the e46 m3csl (production) & m3gtr (factory racing model) is the best they ever made and was the follow up to the e36 m3 lw & gt.
You can't be a Jag hater and get its true performance from it. Find a Jag Lover to drive the STR and Im sure we could get back a few seconds on that lap.
I don't like either because I am not a racing driver. I don't care for V8' because the straight 6 in my jag is just fine for me. The BMW is the more common fashioable car, whilst when it comes to Jags you either get them or you don't. And that's the older ones I am talking about. If I was buying a new one today, I would choose a Toyota Camry over these two names. "I'm over the Emperors new clothes".

These stypes are extremely rare in the r variant, massively overlooked and much more luxurious than the m5, also very reliable unlike the m5… I know which one I would be picking, a much better day to day car with the added benefit of 420bhp don’t forget derestricted the stype was capable of 191mph

Also I was never really a fan of Tiff Needell in the past, I always found him too biased in his reviews and always focused on motorsports capabilities even when reviewing cars that were never meant to be sporty. But watching him after many years, his style has aged quite well. I mean, which car journalist wears a pink shirt and a leather jacket nowadays? And an amazing driver.

This Jag shares the DEW98 platform with Ford Thunderbird (2002-2005) Lincoln LS (2000-2006), it's essentially a Ford with grandma styled headlights and an overly angry cat symbol/logo. I call it the Roaring Kitty with gimp back legs (open diff). The shared Ford interior buttons/trim, the cheap plastic panels really screams 1998 USA car production. I'm surprised there are no 1998 Ford Taurus parts on it.
Yawn. Totally predictable result. We've all seen it many times. You can go back and read road tests from decades ago and it's the same story. Comfort vs performance is always a compromise and when faced with a decision Jaguar always compromises towards softness/comfort. Without fail. I seriously doubt that the usual Jaguar buyer is concerned with how the car behaves on the *race track*....but a BMW buyer might be. I like both Jags and BMWs but they're very different and always will be. These race track comparisons of the two are silly, IMO. Love Tiff Needell, tho !
@NTRSANDMAN the e39 m5 came out as the fastest saloon in the world, the w210 E55 is 50hp slower. The W211 is faster but its rival is the E60 m5 v10... The v10 was faster.

What's more the E39 M5 has some nasty maintaince related problems, so the E55 is the one you want to own. Btw, Mercedes introduce their cars a year earlier compared to BMW, so the W211 is both a E39 and E60 competitor.

You can add a supercharger to the m5 as well nowadays without irreversible changes. M5 has then about 550 ps.

Had an E39 m5 for 6 months around 10 years ago (LG52NYK) covered 10k hard miles in it, an absolute dream realised, those s type r's are very tempting at the moment a hell of a lot of car for the money

I see that BMW has the rare-optional functioning mirrors and indicators. Very rare indeed.
This is a lot different than apples and oranges. More like a croquet mallet and a golf club comparison and recently comparing 2006-08 basic s type and 5 series , the Jaguar won the contest for a low mileage, low price ride for doing a coast to coast U.S.A. road trip. I’ve read that 750 2008 s type r autos were made and two local examples came up on Facebook Marketplace recently. Comparing these 2008 models, the BMW is from another planet of modernity. Not wanting to give more money to Saudi Arabia than required, the V6 Jag was sensible. I drove a 1988 BMW 325 ie for many years and still love our 2005 BMW 325 ci convertible but my 64 year old hard working back would not drive either from NY to LA. The most fun at speed I ever experienced was top speed in a brand spanking new 1966 Corvette. Can we see a M5 - Vette go at it? Kidding.😃
I prefer the M5 naturally aspirated grunt over that mosquito buzzing supercharger whine. I own a 2006 CLS55 AMG Kompressor and the supercharged engine is more gruntty then whine. That buzzy whine would drive me nuts.

There's been two further iterations of the M5 since this one but I would still scour the Auto Trader for this one.

That supercharger is not right, had the same engine and supercharger was not that evident.
I got to borrow a 4.2 XKR many years ago.
Supercharger whine was just like this. It drove me crazy.
I hated it; like being drilled in the head.

Besides the S-Type R. Then a BMW e60 6 pot diesel. (Creaked like an old wooden boat and handled like a barge) I had a 5.0 litre XKR until this July and currently have an F-Type R neither of which have a supercharger whine.

I an a lowly 528i for a while. Very refined, sensible with fuel, and very reliable. I've not own a Jaguar. I think an M550d X-drive Touring with automatic transmission would suit me perfectly. Does BMW make one? Not that it matters since I am not in the market for a £60,000 plus car. I simply don't have the means to spend £60,000+ on a car.
Nothing lowly about one of the most beautiful running r6 engines ever built!

@@paulanderson7796 I am currently driving a M52 pre-TU. You are absolutely right it's just on the edge of being too slow, I'd prefer about 20% more power. But I love it. It just feels like an engine should. It loves the revs and sounds like it too. I've never seen another "sensible" engine giving that sense of sportiness. I'll be putting in sportier cams, headers and ITBs next year in hope for just the right amount of added power.
@@asatrvI don't have the skills to do that kind of thing. I am currently driving a 2.2d Mazda 6. It's rapid and goes round bends like a racing car. Which is fine. But I don't need that kind of lateral grip. I am a road driver not a track driver.
The E39 530i and 530d would have been pick of the pack if I was buying now. V8 engines don't appeal to me, but there's no dispute that the 540i was fast.

They peaked during this era. E36, E31, E38 and E39. Everything went downhill from there.

@@AGolfrGuy12 there’s a reason the E38 more sought after than a e65. Cause the E38 is still more likely to be on the road. Good luck finding a E65 that still runs fine.
@@dariog36th agree e6x are the worst. e60/61 (v10) m5 is still legendary for its sound and top end output, not its daily driver reliability. Even the e36, 38, 39's had to be fitted with upgraded cooling systems to make them last. Again most would say their prime was in the e3x gen but they didn't just go to shit after that. People argue that the e46 m3csl (production) & m3gtr (factory racing model) is the best they ever made and was the follow up to the e36 m3 lw & gt.

There's a massive difference between a 540 and an M5 though... from 286hp to 400... and totally different suspension and brakes.

I don't like either because I am not a racing driver. I don't care for V8' because the straight 6 in my jag is just fine for me. The BMW is the more common fashioable car, whilst when it comes to Jags you either get them or you don't. And that's the older ones I am talking about. If I was buying a new one today, I would choose a Toyota Camry over these two names. "I'm over the Emperors new clothes".

@@Emrestill Could be the x-type since that's fwd. I just remember back in the day. Whenever we had those s-types in the shop. That's what all the technicians would say. That it was basically a Ford and lacked the quality and originality of the brand. At the time Ford was also involved with Volvo and brought the brand down. Geely took over and Volvo made a comeback for sure.

These stypes are extremely rare in the r variant, massively overlooked and much more luxurious than the m5, also very reliable unlike the m5… I know which one I would be picking, a much better day to day car with the added benefit of 420bhp don’t forget derestricted the stype was capable of 191mph

That has to be the most obnoxious and gimmicky supercharger sounds on any production car.
Also I was never really a fan of Tiff Needell in the past, I always found him too biased in his reviews and always focused on motorsports capabilities even when reviewing cars that were never meant to be sporty. But watching him after many years, his style has aged quite well. I mean, which car journalist wears a pink shirt and a leather jacket nowadays? And an amazing driver.
Regarding the SC... WTF are you on about? ANYTHING with a supercharger will give you that characteristic whine.

@skylined5534 no, not every supercharger sounds like that. Some superchargers barely have any whine at all. Some are louder than others, but the audio editing in this video may amplify it a bit too much.

This Jag shares the DEW98 platform with Ford Thunderbird (2002-2005) Lincoln LS (2000-2006), it's essentially a Ford with grandma styled headlights and an overly angry cat symbol/logo. I call it the Roaring Kitty with gimp back legs (open diff). The shared Ford interior buttons/trim, the cheap plastic panels really screams 1998 USA car production. I'm surprised there are no 1998 Ford Taurus parts on it.
Yawn. Totally predictable result. We've all seen it many times. You can go back and read road tests from decades ago and it's the same story. Comfort vs performance is always a compromise and when faced with a decision Jaguar always compromises towards softness/comfort. Without fail. I seriously doubt that the usual Jaguar buyer is concerned with how the car behaves on the *race track*....but a BMW buyer might be. I like both Jags and BMWs but they're very different and always will be. These race track comparisons of the two are silly, IMO. Love Tiff Needell, tho !

What's more the E39 M5 has some nasty maintaince related problems, so the E55 is the one you want to own.
Btw, Mercedes introduce their cars a year earlier compared to BMW, so the W211 is both a E39 and E60 competitor.

Love Jags but the S-Type was a massive miss. Looked awful at the time and all these years it looks even worse, the e39 is timeless. On a side not, Tiff is probably the best TV presentor when it comes to driving ability, he's the only reason i watched Fifth Gear
