What have I done? Genius, or moron?
I've bought myself the cheapest running V8 Jaguar that I could find for sale anywhere in the country at the time of purchase.
Famed for their bulletproof reliability, I imagine I'm in for a completely painless ownership experience...

How much did I pay for this Jag? £1,400.00! What are you thoughts? Comment below :)
S-Types are rust buckets. I hope you inspected it thoroughly under all those plastic covers and nooks and crannies
Lovely motor! Just imagine swapping the early Jag V8 for the latest 5.0ltr supercharged V8 with at least 500bhp! I think Jag did their own version with over 550bhp and tuners 650+bhp! I'm drooling at the very thought of it, though I'd prefer the engine in a black X350 XJR!
Replace the number plates for a start. Get an OEM shape rear plate. Oh and replace those rusty wiper blades!
@@doublem111 both on my list 👍🏻
Straight pipe it

That V8 is entirely British. I was part of the team that designed & developed it in Coventry.
It was built in Bridgend.
The ford criticism is only really peddled by people who don't understand just how buggered jaguar were before ford took over.
A good buy I'd say! 🙂
Joel, I'm old enough to remember most of today's CZcams automotive "superstars" at their beginnings.
Yet to this day alot of their "best" videos are all buying older cheaper cars like this Jag ...which are also bloody awesome 😎
Keep doing what you're doing mate and it will come. Your entertainment is on point.
I'm glad you told him that because I agree with you, I have said this a few times that Joel and sid north and Jamie from the og channel could easily be the next top gear presenters 🙏
Agreed
Because the dopey snowflakes think everything "old" is new because "they" bought one LOL, their lives are so empty the end up doing shit like this...welcome to 2008 for this cheap crap...nothing is new here.
Joel has this ability of making you fall in love with a car that you have never thought of even liking it at first. A massive congratulations to you Joel!👏
Agreed!
Absolutely...congratulations, Joel...!
Totally!
Have spent a lot of time working on these especially the engines. Consider the following, new anti roll bar bushes, service the transmission and diff, swap out coolant for Evans waterless and clean all the earth points in the engine bay, cabin and boot. Will make for a much more reliable and easy to live with car. Health to enjoy it.
IMO, the best looking luxury sedan on the planet. And you got it in the perfect Champagne Gold colour. Congratulations Joel.
S Type is a wonderful *wonderful* car, perhaps even handling better than the E39!
Things to look out for:
1. Sills - the plastic sill covers hold a multitude of sins. Take them off and wax-oil the sills before they rust out.
2. Rear subframe. This has a design flaw. The top of the rear mounts has a hole and traps water. Your only defence is drilling out the bottom and welding plate over the top (I have the schematics if you need them). Good luck!
Does this apply to the facelift too? How do you remove sils? Just pull them apart?
Hey Joel, glad to see all the content that’s been coming out lately. I’ve been following since the early z4 days and still drive mine everyday. Love the jag!
Lovely car and good to see you producing content with your own vehicles again 👍 not a fan of Carly, had many issues with them so switched to a proper diagnostic toolset but they’re helping you get the content out so who can blame you. Looking forward to see how this progresses
Great to see you back with your own car, looks like a good purchase.
I had a 2003 Jag S-Type last year, the wooden steering wheel was definitely one of my favourite features!
“Just a nice feeling of… knob. 😂😂 brilliant, congrats on the car! Look forward to seeing some content, I nearly bought a 3.0 V6 a few months back.
Great choice of car. As nice as it is seeing content with all the flashier newer cars. It is nice to see content made with the more attainable cars.
This is definitely crying out for a Joel V Katie challenge somewhere in the UK!
Joel, I am delighted you bought one. A nice car just hope it’s not plagued with rust underneath
I love S-Type, that car bought my house and gave me job security for over 20 years.
There's a 50% chance I built this (we were on 2 shifts then).
The Engine is pure Jaguar and British BTW.
The 2002 onwards was a much better car.
Agreed...............................
Beautiful car, had a 3.0 version and I adored it! Just keep an eye out for rust, especially on the subframes. A very underrated car, enjoy!
Love the Jag! Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it. I've always liked the S type.
I've literally just been looking at these and said if only there was a video one CZcams of them, and now you have answered my prayers, I salute you sir haha
glad to see you back in your own car and gotta love a v8
Lovely car and colour combo , great to see a young man (and his fiancee, ) appreciate the gentleman’s club interior , far to nice a car to be sent for scrap. Be great to see what you do going forward , you can’t beat a V8.
Great to see some content from you. Great JAG always fancied one. Get more content up please would love to know more. Look good with some R wheels.
Had one of those, great car. I loved the way the seat and steering wheel moved in when you put the key in. Beware of the gearbox, they weren't that long lasting. And check that the plastic timing chain tensioner have been replaced with the metal ones from the 4.2.
And the early ones had an issue with the coolant header tank cracking and leaking. It was down to the material, my one was replaced under warranty.
Glad you opted for a luxury barge with a Jag badge. Lovely car although I prefer the XJ to the S Type. I bought a 2005 XJ LWB last year. 4.2 petrol V8. Love all the wood and it is so comfortable & easy to drive like you say yours is. I have the rear sun blind too, it’s quirky isn’t it!? Good luck with it and I look forward to more videos with it. I love any Jaaaaags ✌🏻
Have always loved these and used to have blue with white interior and it looked beautiful. Look forward to some more on the jag. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Joel,
Great review and your enthusiasm is contagious! Like you I just LOVE the Jags and the S-Type in particular. You highlighted some issues with the car as you knew them to be but I would be VERY interested to learn of what it costs you to bring the car back up to fully functioning. Say a full year's cost summary with both the initial costs (fixing windows etc) through anything that comes up during the first year of ownership. Whatever the case, let's be clear about this: If your fiancé loves it - and you love it - then it MUST stay in the family!!! Cheers!
Definitely interested to see you do a fuel economy challenge with this, another video for later down the line would be to get it properly cleaned up, and enter it into an auction no reserve to see what people would pay for it. Similar to what Hoovies Garage recently did.
Hi Joel. I’m not usually one to make comments on CZcams but after watching your latest video on the S Type I felt I had to say something. I had one of these cars back in 2008 when I took it as a trade in against a car I was selling and I have to say I absolutely loved it. A fantastic soundtrack from the V8 and being wafted along in let’s be honest absolute luxury I really fell for it and it was a complete break away from my 2 year old EP3 civic type r I was really torn when it came to selling it. Thinking about it now so many years later I can relate to your comments and feelings about the car and it looks like a really nice honest example it’s kind of prompting me to go and look for another. What a car for such a silly silly price. Best. of luck with it mate and I look forward to seeing how the adventure continues
Again a type of car I have often considered but never purchased! Thank you for buying one Joel and I look forward to enjoying it vicariously through you 😃
More to come!
@@itsjoel loving your work good sir 👏🏼
Love this video. Had a slightly different feel about it. Great original humour on a quirky old car
I remember looking at these about 10 years ago, the MOT history were shocking, rust, suspension etc, just fit for the scrapper.
your presentation skills have come a long way. You wouldn't be out of place on the TV. Very very good
Great video and what a bargain! I had an early 3 ltr in that same colour, absolutely loved it. Unfortunately the then Ford derived gearbox gave up at around 96000 (apparently a plastic part just fails) and rather than getting it fixed for about a grand, I sold it for peanuts to someone who needed a donor car. A few years later and I'm now back behind the wheel of an S Type 3ltr. 2 years of completely trouble free motoring and breezes through MOT's (so far!!) Do have the 'box serviced, just in case and check the sills for rust and then just enjoy it, they are fabulous cars and very under rated by those who are not in the know.
Hi Joel, loved the video. What about a long drive video checking MPG? Cheers, John.
Great content loving all the videos keep them coming
Definitely get that rear number plate shape changed it will look amazing
I'd like to see what upgrades u can do to update the entertainment system. People will really enjoy that and it would make us all go put an buy one, which would then push the values up
It will be interesting to see why your idle is hunting and it's a bit rough without the revs being up. Having similar issues with my ZT 260, although your lovely acquisition makes a 260 look quite pony!
Amazing Joel! Will it be xj next?
Great video Joel, I’m like you I love older cars and like to look after them, I had a Ford mondeo ghia X that was brilliant, huge spec it had for the year it was. Enjoy the JAG for a bit and get all the niggly bits sorted. Looking forward to another video.
I’ve got an XF with a 4.2 and they do have a certain unique sound. Great sounds
I had a 3litre v6 one of these, same year V reg. it was 3 years old when I bought it.
Got it from a Jaguar dealer, and I have not experienced a better customer service since.
It had a 6 CD auto changer, and the voice control was brilliant, you could say “play CD 4 track 6” and off it would go and start playing. You could also ask it to adjust the climate control temperature in 0.5 of a degree increments.
Also you could set it so that hen you took the key out of the ignition switch, the drivers seat would travel backwards and the steering wheel would go up and forwards electrically giving more room to get out of the car. Similarly, once you got in and put the key in, everything would travel back to the memory setting. It was a good thing to demonstrate, and worked well.
Hey Joel - Great car, great review, I prefer the non brand new car reviews, find them so much more interesting than the new stuff
Beautiful car Joel I'm looking for a 3 litre v6 soon absolutely love them great content as usual.
Hi Joel. Yes, I've always been a fan of the S Type despite the numerous detractors out there. Beautiful car.
Joel! An idea/concept. What about a ‘tried and true’ car meet anything from say 1995 till 2010? I’d pay for a ticket. Maybe host it in Bicester?
A lovely car indeed, so long as you can afford the huge running costs of that big V8 which will return only about 20mpg. I myself seriously considered an S type, but with the price of fuel and everything else going up and up and up, I decided to stick to a diesel Jag 3 litre V6. Anyway, your S type is a lovely example I hope you enjoy it Joel.
Great choice i had a 2004 facelift however was only the 2.5 v6 was very slow as only had 200bhp ut loved it was so comfortable. Sadly a headgasket killed the car and as i only paid 500 for it i scrapped it for 300. Word of warning would be is to check the sill areas as they are known for rotting there. Great cars though and very underrated 👍👍 looking foward for more jag vids 👍👍
This was a brilliantly made video, gave me proper top gear vibes
I still use my 2000 V6 manual every winter and it’s great. V8s had issues with timing chain guides and water pumps. All engines of this era can develop vacuum leaks / ageing coil packs. Need to take the sill covers off. I bet it’s already had under sealing at some point otherwise it’s been garaged a lot. Try not to set the temps on the dash too far apart they can start to play up.
Welcome to Jaguar V8 club! I really like the S-Type, I don't understand why people say they're ugly. I'd have one in a heartbeat!
Nice car, looking forward to more videos!
Enjoying this, I had a 1999 S reg 3.0 one. At that point you only got that size of V6 or the V8 as you have. I've driven a later 2.5 and they understandably don't go as well as the 3.0 does.
So many cool little features on them, I love that the boot fully pops open when you use the ahem* transit keyfob button. Also if you turn the knob on the left of the steering wheel to auto then the wheel and seat fully fold back and away to ease access and egress. As you put the key in the ignition then they both go back to your stored position.
The sat nav is a rare option, mine just had a naff cassette holder that flew out of the dash when you opened it 😂
Also one final thing I remember on mine, if you unscrew the selector knob you can remove the little black spacer but then reinstall the wood knob without it, feels like a short shifter 😉😎
Very underrated cars, just very hard on suspension bushes and be wary of the sills rusting behind the plastic covers!
I've got a very late S-Type V6 and I absolutely adore it it's the most comfortable thing I've ever driven not sure how it compares with the early cars as mine is more akin to early XF than the early S type
Love it! I had it in my watch list as it was very close to me in Stoke Mandeville 😀
Hi Joel. I've been watching this exact Jag for the last week trying to justify buying it to myself. I'm very jealous that you got there first. Can't wait to see what you do with it. Great content. Well done. Graham
Haha, what are the chances!
I have the same engine in my 1997 XJ LWB Sovereign. Lovely sound. - And you really hammer the point of Jaguar. Regardless of your life situation or bank balance, driving one makes you feel successful!
The only real issues with the S-Type were rust (as per all Jaguars of the time) and failing boot seals. The latter is worth replacing or at least checking as the battery sits in a well in the boot and if the boot does leak... Well, let's just say that submerging a car battery in water is rarely a good thing.
Amazing choice! Love the color combo!
That’s a really interesting purchase and it’s in Racing Gold ! 🎉
Good choice on the budget you had. I found the Cayenne terrible for reliability. This looks great so far
Wow Joel personally I have always loved the S-Type and it looks stunning in gold. I would not do anything to it but maybe you could do one of your road trip videos, they are always brilliant to watch.
Great video Joel can't wait to see what you do with the car, however I can't help but wonder if the car has a heated front windscreen?
It does
Do have a soft spot for these , owned 2 so far but the V6…. Rear blind is super rare ! When you lock it check all doors are closed because they suffer with door locks going wrong 👍
Love it. Great choice. Think these cars make so much sense as a second car you don’t drive that much; particularly as you couldn’t afford the petrol if you did.
Lovely video mate
I love Jags, I've an XK8 With the same 4 litre V8 and an 11plate XF with a 3 litreV6. Never had a major issue with either!
I wonder what maintenance costs have been like for this car. I would imagine any place that works on Fords could work on this car.
Not a bad price Joel , seems in good nick , love a V8 ! I've got an Audi b7 S4 , not sure on the gold/beige paintwork though 🤔 but I quite like the interior, you still getting a Cayenne?
Get a service done, filters, fluids and perhaps new spark plugs. it will make a world of difference.
V-8 rear wheel drive, leather, sunroof and comfortable. I'll be interested in the service and maintenance needs. Can be a good road trip car! I have a 2005 Cadillac STS 4.6 V-8 in the USA and it loves to eat up longer trips
This lovely Jaguar was purchased from Norton Automotive of Stoke Mandeville Buckinghamshire. It's a great buy as the price is decent but Norton's have a very good reputation for putting out some outstanding cars, some in mint condition. If Joel's Jag (JJ for short 👌) is a Norton Automotive car then it should be good. The Sat Nav is epic and reminds me of the old Lexus ones from the mid nineties. Enjoy this Joel. It's all about the horsepower remember and not the MPG. This car is a flying machine.
Love the car Joel, have a look at jagdroid, they do a kit to convert the old satnavs to Android auto navs
Looking forward to seeing more videos of the jag. Think every Englishman has a soft spot for a Jag. Hope all is well, take care
I agree!
Really good review Joel, thank you. A customer of mine offered me his 2001 V8 ... I'm just digging out his number ;)
I had one identical except engine 3.0 v6 petrol, I understand the feeling and perfect for long journeys.
Lovely machine! Just wait 'til you have a go in one of the supercharged ones... I got an '03 XJR with the 4.2 a few years ago (only £4.5k!!) and boy do I love that thing. Reckon the only way I'll part with it is if I kill it or it kills me, ha!
I had one til a few months ago, timing chain guides disintegrated and wrecked the engine. I'd spent a couple of grand having the adaptive suspension all renewed too 🙈 Definitely get a cat back sport exhaust fitted and check the chain tensioners/guides. And if you take the sill covers of you might get a shock......
I grew up with Jags and we had 3 of these so this was massive nostalgia. All 3.0 V6 petrol engines in the S-Types we went through, had that 4.0 V8 in a gold and beige XJ8, and XJ6 and two 4.2 Supercharged V8 XKRs.
My dad had me driving around in the US in these things as a teenage British kid going to American high school... and he insisted on sticking Union Jacks on the back! Lots of fun though because with how cheap insurance was in the US I was driving all of the above from 16 years old. Driving the 4.2 XKR was particularly terrifying when I was allowed out on my own in it!
A decade on and I've just the other day bought an XF S V6 3.0d...
Alex quick history lesson it's actually called a Union FLAG!
Should only be referred to as the Union Jack when flown as a Red Ensign !!
Prefer the post 2002 face lifted version personally 👍
@Joel I'm on my second Jag, I love them, I had an XJ which was great, I have an X-Type currently, I love the styling of an S Type, it's a great car and an excellent purchase for what you paid for it, mondeo money, it's a no brainer.
Hello Joel. Good choice. I have a 97 xk8 and an 02 xj8 so can attest tothe quality of these 90s Jags. However, I must stress that the AJ-V8 as fitted to our cars is an entirely Jaguar design and in no way related to any Ford V8s of the period (they were found to be insufficient in power delivery for Jag's requirements). Enjoy the beast!
This is the video I didn’t know I was waiting for 😝
That's fantastic! As a the owner of an old V8 Jag (XK) myself, I think they are great value for money and much more reliable than people often think. Worth owning for the sound alone. Would love to see you take it on some road trips before you move it on.
I have always thought of buying one of these, facelifted one. But I instead happened to buy 1997 Mercedes CLK coupe 🤷♂️
It has Parktronic front and rear, and it works perfectly, after 25 years. I did not think i would use it or anything, but its really nice and helpfull.
I bought a V6 2000 S Type...1 yr later...in the shop 7 months...3 shops ..still not working...I love Victor and not giving up..3000$ repairs ...I pd $3000.....I love my Jag❤️🌹✅
Leather à bit crackled..so many extras...it has so many extras! Sunroof, heated seats, I want my car back on the road ...so comfortable like a glove...you'll never want to get out of it.
Be interested to hear how much you spend to get it all sorted, love the car,how did you find it ?
I love older cars, I drive a 1999 Ford Fairlane Ghia 5ltr V8. Costly to keep on the road, good on fuel. Lovely to drive. Nice big heavy car.
I advocate bringing back a Z4, Joel! Thanks for posting!
Have a 2001 model black on black, same wheels. The missing at low revs is the coil pack these have to be changed from time to time. Beautiful cars.
Good stuff Joel 👍
Love the car and so glad youve bought a jag. I love this model and dont have the balls myself to buy one....Im in Oz and theyd cost a fortune to run
glad you like it! Hopefully you can live vicariously through these videos
Great videos Joel but those shoes! Scream Tory . . . 🤣🤣🤣
Love it, been looking at these for a while, cheap family cruiser. As for plans, straight pipe it!
I can remember a couple of years ago when this would’ve been £800, the price of vehicles has gone disgracefully high
Good for you Joel 👍
Nice motor Joel my mate had a 3ltr v6 on a v reg thirsty car indeed then he bought a BRG brand new type r on an 03 plate amazingly fast and more economic than his 3ltr v6 keep the videos posted Joel 👍
Can't beat an old Jaaaaaaag 👍
An S Type eh? Weirdly we seem to be in sync because when you had the Boxster I had been looking for one. The breakdown did put me off I won't deny it. But I'm currently looking for a second car and as a man of a certain age I now find myself wanting a jag to drive to the golf club. Something I had never wanted previously. And there you are in an S Type! Looking forward to further videos on it.
lovely old thing Joel, watch the Auto gearbox in them, The Air conditioning in those Jags is amazing blows your head off, better than my current 2015 Mercedes ML W166.
I've got a 2002 XJ V8, absolutely love it. The climate control in these cars is just fantastic really. Set the temp you want, and never get that awful hot air that makes you choke. Just nice, even temps. I'm hopeful mine will last a bit, it's certainly got a few issues but I'm going to get it in with a Jag specialist for a look and see if it's going to last a bit. If it will, then I'll address some of the little things (I need new front seats, for one!)
Nice to hear it is not bassed on the Momdayo which was the worst car to park than anything i have had.
i haad a Lincoln in the US annd it was a nice speedboat.
I think if you want full OAP you need that pre-facelift in gold with cream interior and there's some novelty in that, but I do think a facelift in say, green is a much nicer car tbh. For £1400 though, absolute steal!
