Lovely motor! Just imagine swapping the early Jag V8 for the latest 5.0ltr supercharged V8 with at least 500bhp! I think Jag did their own version with over 550bhp and tuners 650+bhp! I'm drooling at the very thought of it, though I'd prefer the engine in a black X350 XJR!

Consider the following, new anti roll bar bushes, service the transmission and diff, swap out coolant for Evans waterless and clean all the earth points in the engine bay, cabin and boot. Will make for a much more reliable and easy to live with car. Health to enjoy it.

S Type is a wonderful *wonderful* car, perhaps even handling better than the E39!
    Things to look out for:
    1. Sills - the plastic sill covers hold a multitude of sins. Take them off and wax-oil the sills before they rust out.
    2. Rear subframe. This has a design flaw. The top of the rear mounts has a hole and traps water. Your only defence is drilling out the bottom and welding plate over the top (I have the schematics if you need them). Good luck!

You highlighted some issues with the car as you knew them to be but I would be VERY interested to learn of what it costs you to bring the car back up to fully functioning. Say a full year's cost summary with both the initial costs (fixing windows etc) through anything that comes up during the first year of ownership. Whatever the case, let's be clear about this: If your fiancé loves it - and you love it - then it MUST stay in the family!!! Cheers!

Hi Joel. I’m not usually one to make comments on CZcams but after watching your latest video on the S Type I felt I had to say something. I had one of these cars back in 2008 when I took it as a trade in against a car I was selling and I have to say I absolutely loved it. A fantastic soundtrack from the V8 and being wafted along in let’s be honest absolute luxury I really fell for it and it was a complete break away from my 2 year old EP3 civic type r I was really torn when it came to selling it. Thinking about it now so many years later I can relate to your comments and feelings about the car and it looks like a really nice honest example it’s kind of prompting me to go and look for another. What a car for such a silly silly price. Best. of luck with it mate and I look forward to seeing how the adventure continues

Great video and what a bargain! I had an early 3 ltr in that same colour, absolutely loved it. Unfortunately the then Ford derived gearbox gave up at around 96000 (apparently a plastic part just fails) and rather than getting it fixed for about a grand, I sold it for peanuts to someone who needed a donor car. A few years later and I'm now back behind the wheel of an S Type 3ltr. 2 years of completely trouble free motoring and breezes through MOT's (so far!!) Do have the 'box serviced, just in case and check the sills for rust and then just enjoy it, they are fabulous cars and very under rated by those who are not in the know.

I had a 3litre v6 one of these, same year V reg. it was 3 years old when I bought it.
Got it from a Jaguar dealer, and I have not experienced a better customer service since.
It had a 6 CD auto changer, and the voice control was brilliant, you could say “play CD 4 track 6” and off it would go and start playing. You could also ask it to adjust the climate control temperature in 0.5 of a degree increments.
Also you could set it so that hen you took the key out of the ignition switch, the drivers seat would travel backwards and the steering wheel would go up and forwards electrically giving more room to get out of the car. Similarly, once you got in and put the key in, everything would travel back to the memory setting. It was a good thing to demonstrate, and worked well.

I still use my 2000 V6 manual every winter and it’s great. V8s had issues with timing chain guides and water pumps. All engines of this era can develop vacuum leaks / ageing coil packs. Need to take the sill covers off. I bet it’s already had under sealing at some point otherwise it’s been garaged a lot. Try not to set the temps on the dash too far apart they can start to play up.

Enjoying this, I had a 1999 S reg 3.0 one. At that point you only got that size of V6 or the V8 as you have. I've driven a later 2.5 and they understandably don't go as well as the 3.0 does.
So many cool little features on them, I love that the boot fully pops open when you use the ahem* transit keyfob button. Also if you turn the knob on the left of the steering wheel to auto then the wheel and seat fully fold back and away to ease access and egress. As you put the key in the ignition then they both go back to your stored position.
The sat nav is a rare option, mine just had a naff cassette holder that flew out of the dash when you opened it 😂
Also one final thing I remember on mine, if you unscrew the selector knob you can remove the little black spacer but then reinstall the wood knob without it, feels like a short shifter 😉😎
Very underrated cars, just very hard on suspension bushes and be wary of the sills rusting behind the plastic covers!

The only real issues with the S-Type were rust (as per all Jaguars of the time) and failing boot seals. The latter is worth replacing or at least checking as the battery sits in a well in the boot and if the boot does leak... Well, let's just say that submerging a car battery in water is rarely a good thing.

It's a great buy as the price is decent but Norton's have a very good reputation for putting out some outstanding cars, some in mint condition. If Joel's Jag (JJ for short 👌) is a Norton Automotive car then it should be good. The Sat Nav is epic and reminds me of the old Lexus ones from the mid nineties. Enjoy this Joel. I grew up with Jags and we had 3 of these so this was massive nostalgia. All 3.0 V6 petrol engines in the S-Types we went through, had that 4.0 V8 in a gold and beige XJ8, and XJ6 and two 4.2 Supercharged V8 XKRs.
My dad had me driving around in the US in these things as a teenage British kid going to American high school... and he insisted on sticking Union Jacks on the back! Lots of fun though because with how cheap insurance was in the US I was driving all of the above from 16 years old. Driving the 4.2 XKR was particularly terrifying when I was allowed out on my own in it!

That's fantastic! As a the owner of an old V8 Jag (XK) myself, I think they are great value for money and much more reliable than people often think. Worth owning for the sound alone. Would love to see you take it on some road trips before you move it on.

I have always thought of buying one of these, facelifted one. But I instead happened to buy 1997 Mercedes CLK coupe 🤷‍♂️
It has Parktronic front and rear, and it works perfectly, after 25 years. I did not think i would use it or anything, but its really nice and helpfull.

I love older cars, I drive a 1999 Ford Fairlane Ghia 5ltr V8. Costly to keep on the road, good on fuel. Lovely to drive. Nice big heavy car.

Have a 2001 model black on black, same wheels. The missing at low revs is the coil pack these have to be changed from time to time. Beautiful cars.

An S Type eh? Weirdly we seem to be in sync because when you had the Boxster I had been looking for one. The breakdown did put me off I won't deny it. But I'm currently looking for a second car and as a man of a certain age I now find myself wanting a jag to drive to the golf club. Something I had never wanted previously. And there you are in an S Type! Looking forward to further videos on it.

lovely old thing Joel, watch the Auto gearbox in them, The Air conditioning in those Jags is amazing blows your head off, better than my current 2015 Mercedes ML W166.

I've got a 2002 XJ V8, absolutely love it. The climate control in these cars is just fantastic really. Set the temp you want, and never get that awful hot air that makes you choke. Just nice, even temps. I'm hopeful mine will last a bit, it's certainly got a few issues but I'm going to get it in with a Jag specialist for a look and see if it's going to last a bit. If it will, then I'll address some of the little things (I need new front seats, for one!)

I think if you want full OAP you need that pre-facelift in gold with cream interior and there's some novelty in that, but I do think a facelift in say, green is a much nicer car tbh. For £1400 though, absolute steal!
