The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

Jonny have considered doing a segment on the great Red Aerobach? He had so much positive impact on the league. Beyond the Celtics even. The way he utilized the 6th man. Getting tossed from games to fire his squad up. Being the first to put 5 black players on the floor in Boston.
He saw the greatness in Russell's defense and how it could trigger a Dynasty using fast break basketball.
Red is the Patron Saint of the NBA. He even gave Kermit Washington a chance when he was a pariah. Bill Walton as well.
The more you look at Red the more of a giant he was. Who was the first to hire a black coach in any major team sport ?

You know what part you got wrong? Bill Russel was 6'9 and if you look at the other box scores during that era, the guys Wilt played against, that got the most minutes at center, were around 6'6-6'9. So get your facts straight.
Oh and this era is just as weak as Wilts era. No defense.

In the midst of this whole “we done with the 90’s” schtick, it’s great to see that there are still people who respect some of the under-appreciated legends of the game. Thank you Jonny.
It’s not even just about the under-appreciated legends either, I think a basketball fan should reasonable be able to enjoy watching anybody who is great at basketball. I mean it’s not fun when they got off vs your favorite team but the rest of the time I think it’s just fun to watch mfs like Jokic or curry hoop.

@jonnyarnett I love ur channel I've been watching the NBA since 07-08 Season but the only season I remember right off hand was 09-10 I think I was like 3 or 4 when I started watching the nba and I'm nearly 19 now

The reason Wilt average 50s is not because his opponent are small but because of his stamina ..he literally played the whole season in 1962 averaging 48 minutes per game

Wilt the GOAT Chamberlain probably averaged a quintuple-double for multiple seasons. He also probably averaged a quadruple-double for just less than a decade...or maybe not. We'll see soon enough.

A video like this is MUCH needed in todays basketball community. The amount of kids trashing past eras today literally makes me sick. I respect todays era for what it is... and I also respect the past eras for what they were. Why can't the basketball community act like the football community does and respect the greats of the past? Young basketball fans are a different breed for sure. Mad disrespectful.
Older fans have also shitted on the modern era a lot as well. Younger fans are mainly retaliating and defending the modern era. But you're right, they shouldn't disrespect the previous generations

Not a bad thing at all to me, I really like this dudes content. The fact I can fall asleep to it just tells me how comfortable I am with his voice. To me it means I like him.
Back in the 90's I use to put VHS tapes of Sonics games in my VHS player just to hear Kevin Calabro's voice calling the game. I could always fall asleep easily to his voice an not because he bored me but rather that he comforted me.
Thank you for this vid Jonny, you're truly one of the best basketball YTers out there. I'm tired of NBA fans(both young and old) hating on legends and specific eras just to boost their agendas and it's great to see reasonable like you actually evaluate players through an unbiased lense and not try to tear down specific players/eras all the damn time. I have to say, being 54, and maybe not remembering as far as 50s, but being a fan, you ABSOLUTELY, without a QUESTION, produce THE best overall BB Videos on the history, especially around the less known stars‼️❣️👍

Video idea: can you do a top 10 or 5 best retirement classes if they were actually teams? Like 2016 retirement class would have Kg, Kobe and tim duncan and the 2019 class would have dirk, dwade and tony parker
The biggest part you guys all leave out when you talk about OLD basketball is there was NO 3 point line no 3 point shot the WHOLE game revolved around the center so of course Wilt was going to have that many points! The game was played completely different in Shaq's time!
I'd expect a young person to say Embid is better than Shaq because they didn't see Shaq play in his prime, but Bill Simmons should know better. Nobody since has dominated their position like Shaq, there was no counter for him. No disrespect to Embid, who is amazing BTW.

Great video and thanks for reminding us about how great Kareem was especially in the 85 Finals vs Boston. Also Kareem was voted the 1980 FMVP AFTER Magic's great game 6 but because Kareem was not present ( back in LA nursing his ankle) the voters were asked to change their votes so Magic would win the award. This is all covered in the book "Kareem" pages 140-141.

~ Glad a reputable source showed Jack Sikma, and Laimbeer as stretch bigs. I’ve been a long time fan of the game, since a kid in the 70’s. Also, coming from a Basketball city, where hoops was in your “blood”… I have always loved the game and guys that could shoot.
I can remember Sikma won a championship with Sonics and a was a vital member of the 80’s Bucks coached by Don Nelson.
Looking back, Isiah and Bill on the high screen and rolls and Sikma spotting up in the corners and on the wings. They were precursors to the modern game.
I remember how unique it was because other bigs didn’t play like them. Couldn’t shoot the 3!

Well, to be honest, moses had the Celtics Lakers 76ers etc in the way... Nobody from 00-02 compares.... So the ring convo doesn't make much sense... Shaq took advantage of the weakest era of big men....

I saw most of the 90's greats live in Seattle which had Kemp & Payton. The one that impressed me the most in person was Hakeem, it was striking to see a 7 foot tall player move the way he did. It was like he was 6 foot tall, he was so quick it didn't seem possible a person that big should be able to move like that. But I saw it with my own eyes multiple times. I only saw Shaq once during his third year. He was awesome obviously but Hakeem made me go "wow".
I love these long videos for multiple reasons, one is they help me fall asleep at night. Not because they're not entertaining but rather because they're comforting.

Sometimes I’m surprised people like him. I mean the guy absolutely brings the hate on himself. stacking the cards in his favour with built LeGM super teams, plays in an era of spacing that allows easy open lanes at the basket while he shoots 37% 3 feet away from the basket. uncalled travelling and offensive fouls galore, recent years poor defence, load managing, quit on his team multiple times when things got hard, makes excuses, flopping, whining . Holy hell I could go on. And that’s not even counting his off court stuff with steroid allegations, faking a hate crime, blm, supports China during HK protests.
I just don’t see the appeal.
Back In The 80s & 90's Real Basketball Teams We're Made. There Was A Tremendous Amount Of Talent That Emerged. But That's Hat's Off To The Players & Teams Who Overcame & Almost Over Came Adversity Including Injuries To Key Positions. The Positive Team Initiative Kept Basketball Real. It's Got To Be Real!!!!

Years ago Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain did an interview with Ahmad Rashad I think. Anyways they where asked how they would do into today's game which was the 90s then. Wilt was wilt and was doing some s### talking but in good fun. There was no bashing the new era players. In fact Wilt said every player should give a cut of their salary to Jordan because they all owed Mike for salaries being what they became. Back then people respected people. Today respect isa word very little know the meaning of.
I kinda disagree with your take on Moses Malone. Some of my points:
- All-NBA Third Team wasn’t a thing until 1988. Shaq had 4 of them.
- Moses faced more HoF and All-NBA centers than Shaq throughout his career. Heck, you have Jamal Magloire, Big Z, and Brad Miller as all-star centers in Shaq’s time. That’s how bad that era was for centers in general.
- 3 MVPs are 3 MVPs, and I value MVPs more than FMVPs.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind if you put Shaq over Moses, but explaining it like Mad Dog had a bad take is outrageous to me.
The thing about Isaiah and other guards in his era, had way way sicker handles than they get “props” for. Because the Kyrie//AI handle is illegal and called strictly when those guys played. So Isaiah breaking clowns ankles regularly is just stupid amazing with what was considered palming, carrying, double dribble. Not to mention that the “Euro-Step” was a disgusting travel that looked super ugly and was only done by players at YMCA’s when the defense actually forced them to travel.

I get all of this but the man played 119 NFL games over 9 seasons. He's in the top .25% of humans. Made $40 million.

rasheed wallace doesn’t get talked about enough. he was easily the 3rd best power forward behind kg and duncan during his era and was one of the best stretch bigs in the league. he’d be incredible in todays nba. move him to center and you’ve got a perennial all star
In the Era where the "big man" is becoming more and more obsolete compared to previous era's, the league had shorter players in the earlier era's in which a big man was crucial to a team's success? WOW!! That makes as much sense as someone claiming Lebron to be better than MJ.

Shaq is just that dude. Shaq is the only player that can put his team in the double bonus free throws. Teams had to use 3-4 guys a game just to guard Shaq. The dude is just that dominate. Also Shaq was the reason why the NBA allow zone defense.
Wouldn’t Wilt’s godly strength be his big advantage? Wasn’t there lore around him benching 500+ lbs? A guy that athletic with actual strength and power would be truly unstoppable.

Less contact is called for the foul in the modern game. When Iverson jumped on Shaq's back and Shaq took Iverson up with him, the refs didn't want to call it. Shaq was banged a lot harder without getting the call. Embiid has an easier opportunity to score.

These so called experts don't watch games. You can't go off stats and highlights. You need to watch them play. Shaq was so unstoppable for 10 years. He was one of the few players who changed the game during his dominance. Only few athletes not just basketball can do that.
Fun fact my uncles buddy was a caretaker for a mentally challenged dude who had no family and left him his card collection he gave them to me being a basketball guy and both of those kobe and vince cards were in that collection i have aswell as one of those rookie lebron jersey slice cards with eric snow i beleive aswell.
Wilt played a lot like LeBron. Just as fast, good shooting, passing, driving, IQ, but he was 5 inches taller. A player like that would dominate any era (given a good team)
