- Manualing a mountain bike is an awesome skill to learn, not only because they look cool, but because they’re a fundamental part of other MTB trail riding skills. Neil shows cameraman Tom how to improve his manuals by breaking down the basic technique in a simple coaching session.

What coaching session do you want to see next?
Wheelie :)
Wheelie
Bunny hop :) Great approach btw ! I saw a lot of how to but having it like a coaching session makes it a lot clearer somehow :)
Doing Manuel hop !! Or it’s it call rocket hop ? Like when Manuel you jump with your bike and get back to Manuel position when you land . I know people who do it but I can’t do it
Show Tom how to wheelie, because this Tom also can’t wheelie (or manual), these videos are very informative, Thanks.
Seriously, this is how instructional videos should be done! Work with someone who doesn't know how to do a skill yet so we can see the corrections that need to be made. It is also encouraging to see someone have to try over and over before they get it, because that's what needs to happen.
totally agree!
I've been trying to manual BMX for over a year with no luck. I've watched countless how to videos but this is the first I've seen teaching someone that isn't already amazing at them. Breaks down the steps in a logical manner fir a newbie and shows how to practice them. Great video I can't wait to get on my bike now.
@@stinkyham9050 Well, did you find the sweet spot yet?! :) I'm ready to try again myself, was in the same boat as you.
For real. I feel like every video I watch the people already know what's up and you don't get a sense of what actually has to happen.
This is awesome--first time.someone has broken down the L shape in a way that I feel like I can try without going straight to falling on my arse.
Keep it coming!
to right dude
Tom probably represents a lot of us. I liked that he didn't get that magic manual right at the end, that shows that it's a process and it's ok if you don't get it in a day.
Exactly...hit the nail on the head...follow up vid in 3 months to refresh and see how he has progressed
Ha ha, was half expecting that myself and would have been pissed if he picked it up that quick. 🤗
This style of tutorial is so much better. I can bunnyhop, drop etc but can’t manual for long. This video has provided a better explanation of how to do it. Thank you , off to practice now 🤙
Agreed. A+ work but that is just how these guys do it.
Campbell Mckeogh whilst out filming today I put this into practice how Neil taught it and it’s already progressed my manuals 👍
hows it going?
How can you bunny hop without being able to lift your front wheel?
My lower back hurt alot when learning manual
like this content should do a series on jumps and other skills with him
Bunny hop
He said he can do that stuff. But I don't know how good
I can easily bunnyhop my Kona Stuff (set up as kind of a trail/enduro Hardtail with 140mm) and my Bergamont Kiez Dirtjumper.
But I can’t bunnyhop my Nukeproof Mega 290, it seems like the back wheel is glued to the ground..
Maybe it’s because of the EXT Storia Coil Shock I installed.
It has monster traction, in fact it has to much traction since I can’t get the back wheel of the ground, no matter what I do.
Also possibly weekly coaching videos?? Using this as an example we can try and follow the video and we can also follow toms progression too.
Yes agree...should of been what they did with jess...i have been suggesting they do vids with normal/new bikers since the internet was invented, so great to at last see!👏
Yes! this helped a ton!
Please do a coaching lesson with bunnyhopping
Yes please!
Pretty plz
Yes definitely
Thank you this tutorial helped me bruise my collarbone
Perhaps shouldn't have watched it whilst riding... 😁
same, watched the part where he said less speed because it lowers the chance of road rash, then went outside and did it with too much speed, when my front wheel came down i was sideways to my momentum and just went down, now i have road rash in like 6 places lol
Maybe try at grassy park or school wearing body armor. I think learning wheelies and stoppies 1st, then onto manuals.
Great video guys - this was far better at explaining the technique than the usual instruction manual style - it's really useful to see someone else learning how and having it explained simply, rather than someone who already knows try to explain how they do it. Gonna go and try myself now!
QUESTION: The whole L shaped move - Isn't it MORE about: 1. go down[pump];2- PUSH the bike OUT from under you WITH YOUR LEGS ?? - That is the impression I get, rather than getting your bum back over the back wheel[eventually it's the same thing, but MENTALLY it's a big shift] #provemewrong #gmbn
Please do a "follow-up" video of Tom's progression with the manual. This is exactly what I have been recently working on. I can wheelie for days, but the "manual" looks way cooler!
Came here to say the same thing, really want to see the conclusion of this!
Any link?
It is definitely helpful with the step by step breakdown!
It would be perfect, if only he used a spork.
Oh man. Tom is ME! I have years of dirt jumping, freeriding, and downhill racing experience, but I still can't manual for more than like 1 second. I'm able to manual a short roller no problem, but I can't do a 5 second manual across flat ground to save my life. My issue is I always fall over to one side or the other and I can never correct it back to center.
one if not the best manual tutorials out there! well done Neil and GMBN crew
This is great! Screen shot the two riders at 10min and compare. Neils back is almost vertical, his thighs are almost parallel to the ground, his toes up heels down and very important ... his head is up and back. The average adult human head weighs over 5kg, it is a massive pendulum and the key to many successful maneuvers in almost every sport.
Spot on. Head up key. Perhaps even better to say Head up/Shoulders back
Wow, good point
This video is much better than the other tutorials. It’s good watching someone learn rather than watching your pros explain something you’ve been able to do for ages.
after earing Neil talk about the L shape technique for so long I finally tried it! I practiced for only a few minutes after my ride today and I finally managed to raise the frot wheel higher and get close to the balance point.
Neil you made me a believer ! I joined the L shape cult today. Neil is my guru.
Adding Tom really helped me with the explanation. You should include him more often. Thanks Neil, and Tom 🤘
Tom asked every question i have about manuals. my movements are/were exactly the same and i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. i would like to see a follow up with Tom after a week and fortnight with an honest reflection on how much he practiced to show how hard it is to progress. for me i practice hard about once a month, forget, relearn hard, forget etc... i want to see just how long it takes so i can benchmark an effort.
cheers
I'm learning how to manual now, and one thing that was really helpful to me was learning to a bail off the back of the bike safel;y and with confidence. One thing that stood in my way (I can't speak for others) was fear: fear of looping out and falling off the back. Once I learned how to step off the back safely and did it a few dozen times, I was able to concentrate on the techniques needed to manual instead of being afraid of looping out off the back. Hope this helps others.
How did you practice bailing? I had a pretty bad fall on my back when trying to wheelie and would love to practice bailing!
@@Ancient88Wisdom Do a wheelie in the grass but use way too much force when you punch your first pedal stroke. You will be going pretty slow since it is your first stroke and the bike will just loop out between your legs, dropping you on your feet.
@@cidvisions thanks, will try that out!
Neil said he didn't see much difference in their position accept that his hips were lower when he looked at the recording but he also is sitting taller. His head is more upright, you can see his whole face, and his shoulders are further back relative to his hips. Tom is leaning forward with his head down. Neil effectively has his center of gravity both lower and further back because of his body angle.
when Neil does manuals his toes of his lower/back foot are tipping up, and Tom is pushing is toes of his lower/back foot down. That's the reason why he comes out the manual quickly. did the same over and over until I really dared to street my foot up. love the videos!
Really good spot. Gotta try this myself
Really enjoying the coaching - Thanks !!
this kind of content is super. looking at normal peolple learnig is waaay more useful than looking at a pro doing the right thing from the first move. taht said, neil is very good at teaching.
Tom should be featured more. Especially after that impressive maneuver that he pulled in the Random Tandem 2 vid as the camera man in the back ground. Dude has got skillz that could be honed!
Superb video. More like this please. The coach and student conversation made this so so useful. A series covering similar skills would be a godsend
So helpfull. Need more video like this. 👍👏
It's very helpful video, thanks for this
Guys it a great way of teaching it's better because it's good to show teaching a skill which he doesn't known and he struggles to learn it's better for me to learn
Neil is a natural teacher, after about half an hour of practicing I'm getting the odd time where its about to flip over but am able to use back brake to bring it down which means I'm on my way. Other thing is keeping the bike going straight....
Great, I really enjoyed watching this lesson on how to manual, with someone who is still leaning the skill. Brill, keep up the great content.
either I am too hammered, or this has been the most comprehensive and easy to learn manual tutorial ever!
Probably the most applicable manual tutorial/training I've watched - Tom pretty much was me at the same time. Highly recommended watching.
I don't normally comment on skills videos, but this one ended up being surprisingly helpful. Like your test subject, Tom, I can manual trail features well enough that I've never spent much time just working on holding manuals for long periods of time. And when I have practiced, I've been fine at getting my wheel up, but I've always pulled too far over and overcorrected with the brake. While I realize feathering the brake will correct that, I still felt like I was doing something wrong. What this video taught me is that I was probably muscling my way in to the manual rather than using correct down-to-back technique, which, when done correctly, doesn't take very much muscle, and doesn't need to be done that quickly. I found during my test session today that I was able to get the front end up and to the balance point without extreme pull-over, and without using very much force through the movement. Thanks duders.
I love this format where you have someone trying to learn the technique and Neil or other GBMN crew coach that person, and all the dialog that goes with it.
Really enjoy watching Neil explain the step by step approach
Really good video with a relatable rider, more content like this would be spot on
Great video mates! Tom, thanks for being a good sport and helping out in front of the camera! More of these would be great Neil. Cheers!
The best advice: practice them every day. Just on the street in front of your house on days you dont ride trails! I would warm up practicing them for a half hour before trail riding too. Now i can do them on singletrack/rollers/puddles as far as i want for the most part. Even land in a manual off small jumps. Fun.
Found this really good. Neil your tips are always great but having Tom there representing us mortals really helped hit the points points home. Just as useful was Tom's feed back while trying the tips out. Thank you.
Great! Love this ”teaching the average person”-style of video. I’m also practising manuals. Now I dont have any problems getting the front wheel up (no problems to loop out either 😊) but I’m practising to keep the front up by moving my weight back and forth. That’s difficult!
One tip that was’nt mentioned in the clip which I think enhances your ability to lift the front wheel is to drop your heels! For me, that really helped. I did the same thing as the guy in the video. Compare his and Neils heels position.
Amazing tutorial, great learning seeing someone at my level try over and over again and see the corrections. More of these please
Whenever I've watched BIKE competitions with the GMBN hosts and others, Neil is often the best at manualing. He is amazing!
Love the coaching style of vid, more like this please, excellent work Neil and GMBN
that was a breaking point in all the manual instructions videos on youtube, this format is gold
Loved this! Hearing Neil talk to someone that requires a bit of coaching brings out a few other cheeky details that might get missed in other how-to videos. Makes me feel like I'm not alone again with the pain of learning how to manual for longer than a few seconds!
This is one of the most helpful videos you’ve done. Thanks
i love this vid. Having someone who doesnt know anything and then learning him is way better than just giving step by step guide
Looking forwarding to practicing this when the weather warms up a bit. Thanks GMBN!
I think I’ve watched every how to manual video there is, and couldn’t get that wheel up. Bang... immediately up after watching this. Great coaching and breakdown of the technique, thanks Neil
LOVE THISE SERIES, keep it going
Super helpful, struggling to learn this and picked a lot up. Thanks!
Thank you! Advice has helped me no end! 👍🏻
Great video, this is how these types of videos should be done, Tom is a great representation of so many riders, awesome to watch!
great vid/coaching format! I have watched loads on this and never mastered it, this has given me a much better perspective! looking forward to the weekend to try it out!
That was great video to see some one that did not know how to manual and watching the mistakes. Mades me understand the technic better thanks both of you.
Great video! Impressive teaching skills. Thanks so much.
9:00 get a cheap bmx to muck around on. Theyre really easy to manual and if you do loop out the seat is low enough that you can just jump off backwards and land on your feet but keep a hold on the bars if that makes sense
Best manual video out there, this was so helpful! Thanks guys!
So I've come back to watch this again. I still cant manual. Yet !
How's Tom's manual skills now ?
this is great! love to see this coaching style and see someone improve their technique. pls do more and with hardtail bikes too
Great vid! Thank you 👍 Doing one on how to bunny hop would be good for me.
Thank you! This was incredibly helpful. I've watched lots of video explaining how to manual but the video of you coaching someone really helped me to recognize what I was doing wrong.
Excellent video and questions. Thanks
Please post a video of when Tom gets it down, that would be cool.
Every now and then I come back to this vid. Last time I stopped learning the manual because I was too disappointed I couldn't get it done. I took the wheelie-tip from Neil to learn the balance point 6:40. I'm starting to do a bit of a wheelie so that feeling is coming. A bit. Today, I think I can use the "getting the stronger pump in the middle" at 5:35. Thanks Neil and Tom!
Excellent video. Very helpful Thanks !
Great coaching video Neil!
Gmbn the best ❤️
super helpful couching class, I really appreciate it!!!!
Best Video for learning the manual! Great job! 👍
Helped a lot thanks
Proper way to go over a fallen tree.
Rolling over an obstacle at axle height can result in hitting the BB/chain guard and possibly going OTB. I'd like to reduce OTB in the world by GMBN coaching the world around that "bump the front wheel on top of the obstacle immediately followed by pushing bike forward and hopping the rear wheel to where the front wheel just was" skill. Then take it to the next level of going up a tech climb where you have a couple of axle height steps to go up where you need to chain this movement twice.
I'd love to see that. I went OTB literally 2 days ago and separated shoulder. All because there was a log that had a drop off afterwards I wasn't expecting. Wasn't confident on speed cos the log was diagonal. All drop off tutorials are off a flat surface.
this is so much better than having a pro doing everything and giving the impression that this kind of stuff is easy
i needed this, thank you
Please more videos like this Coaching session in this exact form!
Loving the how to vids with riders much more involving and easier to take on advise.
Such a great video that covered so many aspects. Very honest and real. Tom was a great student that represents many very competent riders
Love these videos that help improve your skills
yes!! what I so often miss from the vast majority of tutorial videos like this is the progression stages to get to that particular skill .. it's always a matter of practice practice practice but I'd love to see more coaching videos where you show progression steps and how to practice those in particular
This is the best explaination i've found to manual - will try it out this weekend
I love, love, love this video! Much easier to follow along with somebody who is actually learning, I feel. Please more of Neil coaching and Tom (or obviously somebody else) learning.
Thanks for the Tuto
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant..more of this, please.
This was really, really great, thank you! I saw at least two things I’m doing wrong and I’d love to see more of this content from GMBN. Bunny hops, jumps and more advanced cornering technique; particularly on body position, pumping and how to ride corners well on steep trails where you have no choice but to drag the brakes!
Great tutorial! Got out to try it out right after. You can really feel the difference between lifting the front wheel with your arms and doing it the right way!
Step by step break down this is AWESOME 😎 thanks 🤟
Probably the best manual tutorial video on CZcams.
this video is awesome and probably the best instructional video i've seen online. do more please!
Not sure how many times I've watched this, but I will be in the manual club this summer! Great job Neil🤙
This is really a great way teach us viewers all those techniques you find so easy yourself already.
I think I’ve learned a lot more from this video than from all your other manual vids all together.
That was an excellent video! Would love to see more of these types of video.
super helpful, thank you
Absolutely incredible video. I have exactly the same problems with wheelies and manualing as Tom describes. Very relateable and a great help.
What's so 'absolutely incredible' about this video? Did you maybe see flying bikes?
Nice point that we found out when I was teaching my mate to manual and wheelie is to look far ahead rather than the front wheel. It helps with the straight line stability
Yep, simple but very important for maintaining a manual/wheelie!
@@jerryvolpini7987 yeah never realised I did it so didn't think to use it as a pointer.
a great way to explain this technique. well done
Sick straight to the point
Good job! I'll try to learn on my hardtail.
Very good idea! Love it!
Learnt a lot from this vid ! Please make more of them 🔥
This episode is such a great addition to the first manual how to by Neil. The one thing I still need to work on is feathering the brake. For me, that trust in my ability to brake just the right amount is all that's left to conquer since I've started using Neil's technique's. Thanks so much!
Tom is the perfect student for this purpose because he explains exactly what is going through his mind and askes good, well worded questions. It would be good to see another video when he's nailed it.
