- "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a seventh-season episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents made in the summer of 1961 that has never been broadcast on network television. The episode was scheduled to be episode #39 of the season. The story and teleplay were written by Robert Bloch, the author of Psycho, and the episode was directed by Josef Leytes.
The four main characters are played by Diana Dors (Irene Sadini), Brandon deWilde (Hugo), David J. Stewart (Vincent Sadini), and Larry Kert (George Morris).
Although once qualified as a lost episode, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" has since been widely distributed in syndication and - due to its status in the public domain - in numerous Hitchcock home media releases and video on demand.[1][2]

Alfred Hitchcock Presents still creeps me out to this day, this episode in particular!! Absolutely one of the great series of all time.
This episode was considered too gruesome to be shown on the tv series. Although you don’t actually see anything, knowing what happens was considered upsetting enough
The irony of the kid’s perception of seeing them & assigning the angel & devil label to their actual state of heart is so very real to the constant state of reality we live in
"The saw worked great. The wand didn't." Great Hitchcock line and delivery!
Loved his dry-humor , were the best parts of the shows for me .
"She was beside herself" was the best line!🤣
@@wendyl5323 Agreed. Glad somebody else noticed it. :)
I don't know what she saw in herself.
@@david10101961 She was definitely about to be feeling a “buzz””. Incidentally, Diana Dors played the character Matilda in “Berserk” (1967, with Joan Crawford) and Matilda meets a similar fate.
No matter how you slice it, Alfred can pull off a great presentation.
NOW CUT THAT OUT
No matter how you slice it. well said sir.
You're such a cut up.
Any screenplay directed by Robert Bloch always makes it compelling viewing.
Psycho was an excellent read.
Psycho is a great read as well as my favorite Hitchcock movie!!
Written by Robert Bloch, not directed by him.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents - was a favourite as a youth the Parents liked it though the odd episode creeped them out, they enyjoed it none the less.
R. I. P. Mr Alfred Hitchcock, for the entertainments you generated. 💐👍
NOTHING better than this series. Growing up, I adored! Reading the monthly Alfred Hitchcock short story paperbacks. Did you????

I loved them. My mama had collected them as she was growing up. That was really one of my all time favorites.
Anything by Robert Bloch (who wrote "Psycho") is worth watching. Excellent.
“Smile Irene!... Smile!” 😁 She was beside herself in the end.
That’s the line concluding the episode, but it’s censored out of most prints airing on tv today!
@@anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 Too "misogynistic," I guess. 🙄
It's the first time I see this episode and it's bloody amazing.
One of the problems with TV today, is that so many so-called “actors” simply can’t act! They are just a bunch of POSERS who MUG for the camera! The rest of the TV programming is wasted on “Reality” shows that have NOTHING to do with reality. In Alfred Hitchcock’s day, to even be CONSIDERED for a TV show like, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” in 1961, you had to really KNOW how to ACT! At that time, a lot of the actors came from the theater, and even movies, and were highly TRAINED in the acting profession. Watch this show, and see for yourself!
Thank you Tobar the 8th Man for bringing back my childhood. I remember sitting in front of our Black & White Television Set with the whole family watching these Alfred Hitchcock series on Sunday Nights. Thanks Again from, Philadelphia Pa .
The way Brandon's eyes shine, he looks demented - great photography effect!
This story is insanely wicked and I see why they didn't air it initially on broadcast television...

"The saw was a success, but the wand was not". Awesome episode! Poor Hugo and Sadini.

Sorry for your loss.
Such a sweet thing to say, my condolences for your loss! There are shows that remind me from when I watched with my Grandma & those memories are priceless.
Sorry for your loss , I'm glad we all can now watch this and you can think of your ex while watching this because your ex will be there with you. Another great show to watch is the Twlight Zone and Outer Limits as well..!

That was very kind.
Brilliant. The writing-the story-performances...brilliant!
This is still the craziest ending of a film that I know of.
First class story's I used to watch these as a teenager in the early 60s
excellent all around performances and of course great writing/directing and especially, casting. Can't say that about much on TV or film these days.
Hugo is played by child actor Brandon De Wild. He was known for many other roles over the years but he'll always be, for me, Joey from Shane. He was a doll.
Faith Castillo he’ll always be Ethel Waters adorable little John Henry to me in “member of the wedding”
He died in a car crash at age 30. Very sad his career stalled because of his short stature and his pretty looks
@@rachelgarber1423 There are/were a lot of short actors. I assume it must have something to do with not wanting them towering over the women. The tall guys like John Wayne spent most of their time hanging around with other guys. At least on the screen.

“Irene was beside herself”
LOL
Robert Bloch sure had his finger on the pulse of psychopathic young men. Let's not forget this episode wasn't shown during the original run of the series.
Ooohhhhh Robert Bloch never ever disappoints 🤗🤗❤️
Hugo comes across as having a learning disability rather than being a psychopath. He doesn't understand things, like a small child, but psychopaths know what they are doing- at the end Hugo thinks he now has magical powers but a psychopath wouldn't think that.
This was a great episode -- I kind of predicted the ending at one point but it was filmed excellently -- what a great show!
Thank you 8thman for taking the time to post this wonderful picture for us to enjoy.
Wow great to see the lovely Diana Dors in this.
"The saw worked excellently, but the wand didn't. Hugo was terribly upset and Irene was 「beside」 herself. As for the police, they misunderstood the whole thing and arrested Hugo for murder."

nothing is funny about that fat pervert !
STORM Δ MOTORS edgy
+STORM Δ MOTORS Honestly, he wasn't a pervert.
He was happily married to a WOMAN.
A lot of times in his career things would become very difficult, and he wanted to quit several times.
And if it weren't for her encouragement and guiding light, he would have.
He was rather a nice person. He staunchly shunned the disgusting world of hollyweird and it's sordid goings on.
Thank you for the memories of watching this with my father when I was living in the Canal Zone
An excellent, creepy edition of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Even as you can see what's coming, you have to watch because the story is told so well.
By the way, this and some other old clips make me wonder, has that kid from Shane ever played any normal roles?
My all-time favorite Alfred Hitchcock, no show of recent times comes even close to these shows in quality. They did such wonderful shows with such limited technology
Thank you for uploading this version. The one that usually airs on tv nowadays is censored by cutting Hugo’s last facial expression as he grins and the line which he says “Smile, Irene, smile!” which definitely added a more graphic note, both in the demented but naive nature of the character and the violence he will unknowingly perform.
I wonder how old was he in this episode? But I must say he's kind of cute.
@@mariavictoriasalita5273 He was born in 1942 so he was only about 20 here, and as you might already know he only lived to be 30 due to a tragic car accident: according to IMDb, he was en route to see his wife after her surgery and his camper van hit a parked truck. So ironic and tragic that his life was cut short. As far as the episode we’re discussing, it was the last of the original “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” half-hour shows, after which Hitchcock would begin his hour long format.
@@anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 oh my! He was quite young. About the music used in this show, I first heard it on Sesame Street featuring a big turtle or tortoise walking. That was way back in the 80s when Sesame Street was shown here in the Philippines. I miss that show very much.
How did television come from this and go to the sad state and poor writing it's presently at? I guess it's a reflection on our society as well.

Nobody's willing to risk anything, that's why. They're afraid of shareholders, advertisers, angry letters from the general public, you name it. So they go with "what the public wants" and the result is cookie-cutter shows with nothing to offer. It's not all that new, though; if you read "The Making of Star Trek" you will be startled at the hand-wringing (by network executives) that Gene Roddenberry had to deal with in getting *that* show on the air.
are you writing this poopoo with a straight face? I don't think so.
Hugo missed a trick in not performing that final act in front of a live audience! 🤣
I watched this series a lot in the early 70s and this is one episode I remember, including the last “smile” line.
I enjoyed this very much. A great ending . Thanks whoever uploaded this.
Diana Dors was the British Jayne Mansfield - she looked at home in a carnival. Brandon de Wilde was the great child actor famed for his artless sincerity and unaffected delivery. He died far too young.
@Adrian At And T She's a quite superior singer of cabaret as well. For awhile she was Mr. Richard Dawson (of Family Feud and Match Game fame!)

The boy’s mouth and eyes remind me of Juliette Lewis’
Alfred Hitchcock was a hard task master who demanded perfection from his performers, but how he allowed Diana Dors' eyes to blink after hitting her head around 21:48 - 21:52, without doing a 2nd take is strange. Anyone depicting unconsciousness, is not going to blink like that which was very noticeable. Thanks for posting as it was most enjoyable!
TV less money and a tighter schedule.
Yes, I agree. I was a little confused with that scene. I thought she just wasn't talking as she was in pain. And then whe he picked her up, she seemed unconscious which was weird!
Hitchcock didn't direct this particular episode
Hitch wasn’t the director. I think most of the time he just introduces the episodes.
Born in 1953 we did not watch Alfred Hitchcock when I was growing up and only saw it when visiting an aunt and uncle's house when we would visit the night it was on TV. I sure enjoy seeing these shows now on CZcams. Thanks for placing them on CZcams.
Christ, this was great.
Very very good....I was to young when these were going....But I remember hearing the music from my bed.... Thankyou for this video.....👍
Brandon de Wilde (Hugo) was in the movie SHANE (as a boy)
He was killed in a road accident at the age of 30 years.
There was a Juvenile Academy Award in the 50's and why Brandon de Wilde didn't win one for "Shane" is inexplicable, an unforgettable performance
And what a real shame - he was a natural actor and was surely destined for outright stardom.

I love these old shows.
The wake up scene from 5.00 is a lesson for us all.
I foresaw the plot ahead right from the first saw scene. Not that Hitchcock's work is predictable or anything, but maybe because i write fiction myself i'm quite aware of most twist angles. Good episode!
The writer of this story, Robert Bloch, also wrote Psycho starring Tony Perkins.
Story line here, and actor De Wilde same persona as Perkins in Psycho.

Imagination and tasteful daring have been lost somewhere along the way. It shows in today's silly, uninspired TV and music that only brain dead kids could like. Oh and modern art and architecture suck too. We need another Renaissance!
We can't have another Renaissance; it's too hard to spell
Not all "modern art and architecture" deserve a "diss". The biggest thumbs downs go to MSM news propaganda, cartoons (incl most of Disney) w pedo symbols & sexualization of children, and "reality" tv w no talent. IMHO these are top 3 media perps.
Watch 'Midnight in Paris' from 2011 before you wish to actually live in the actual Renaissance.

I love this episode. Diana Dors is so beautiful and pulls this part off beautifully. Diana Dors was supposed to be Britain's Marilyn Monroe, and she certainly was beautiful in the Marilyn mold. She played very different parts than Marilyn and I love them both, along with Jane Russell and Jane Mansfield, another answer to Marilyn. Diana Dors will always remain one of my favs though. Early in films she played along with Petula Clark in some of the Huggins movies in England. She was a bombshell even as a teen.
Her American accent was very natural. I'd heard of her & knew she was a 1950's+ bombshell but hadn't realized she was British...😎👍

A!ways LOVED the Hitch! This was a little more wacky than his usual...😵
Notice how the Alfred Hitchcock theme uses the same instruments as the the Leave It To Beaver theme including the xylophone...Same Studio
Joe Dollinter
I noticed a couple of episodes are shot in the Cleaver house.
LOL! Wouldn't it have been mind-blowing to have Hitchcock do an episode of Leave it to Beaver?
It's called The March of the Marionettes .
Some of the same “stock” music was also used in the background and bridging-scene segments of some shows and easily recognized in the “Beaver” and “Hitch” episodes, as well as “Father Knows Best” and others. While we’re at it, cartoons often used stock music which was shared by tv sitcoms…one example was a theme by John Seely used in a Roadrunner cartoon, but later it became the title theme for “Dennis the Menace”.
Magic wands are made from "Holly" wood, to cast spells...coincidence ?
