Better Than a Fn2? Civic Type R EP3 Review - Mugen Twin Loop Exhaust - PerformanceCars

- After reviewing the Civic Type R FN2 not too long ago, I take a drive in this Civic Type R EP3. The engine is more or less the same and the handling not differing too much from each other. Really love the sound of the Mugen Twin Loop exhaust.

+back to the oldskool Many thanks!! Nice, have you done much to the car or are you keeping it standard?
Good review, I now have a 2002 ep3 in black , thanks for review

+Robert Leal Hi, thanks for the comment and support. I tried this before but upon watching it back, it didn't seem that interesting. I will put it in a future video and see how it goes 👍
Love your reviews bro - subscribed
Thanks for your comment and support!
iv got the exact same car in silver, its the most fun most reliable most performance most all rounder car you can get for such a small price, i use it all the time drive all over the country, the millage is getting high but i dont care shes my baby im going to use her i dont want to keep her low for the next guy to enjoy her lol.. great review
Thank you for the comment and support. Great to hear that you are using the car as it was designed to do.
good video. i like it
What's the difference between the Momo and the pre facelift steering wheel?
Thanks for the review - I went for a Golf GTI but these EP3 still interest me; if only the headlights weren't so ugly!
Thank you for the comment and support. Both the Golf GTI and EP3 are great cars, it just depends on what you like and enjoy at the end of the day is all that matters really.
Luke Kelly how about pre facelift ? The headlights are different and pre facelift looks better imo
gear shift knob is the worst part of Civic's 7gen ;p place of it is lower! ;p
That air cone needs to be taken down to bottom right hand corner behind the bumper I front of the wheel arch! Much cooler air down there makes a difference I did it to mine
More EP3 videos pls :)
I have a couple more EP3's lined up in the future :)
sweet car
Don’t think we really have to worry about heat-soak in the UK 😆 apart for maybe a handful of days in July or August
the fn2 was stock apart from the exhaust this ep3 isnt stock at all has sports exhaust lowering springs and a intake ???
im gonna rip my ears right off my head to relieve myself from this music
You did really well getting a 0-60 time like that thats awesome! has the car had much done to it?
I was wondering where the battery was at 1st haha
Hi Bond, I have read that the steering on an EP3 is a bit of a let down, especially when compared to other Hondas, e.g. DC2. Did you mention that the facelift has fully electric steering and pre-facelift hydro-electric? Might this be why?
I also read somewhere that all Hondas from 2006 onwards have drive-by-wire throttle, do you know if that includes UK EP3s? I would prefer the response from a cable throttle. I have seen a nice Cosmic Grey Premier Edition for sale but it is an '06 model. Great videos btw.
Hi Chris, thanks for the comment and support. All EP3's have electric power steering regardless of pre facelift or facelift. When compared to the DC2's hydraulic steering then I would say that it isn't quite as good especially when driving hard on track but that really is up to the driver's preferences. Daily driving wouldn't make the EP3 inferior in the steering department with it's electric steering.
All EP3's also have drive by throttle too so there's no need to worry about that. Good choice on a Cosmic Grey with the Premier Edition package 👍👍
Drive by wire came out in 2007 on the nicer looking and overall better car the FN2, Honda don’t make there newer model cars worse than the previous model, no matter what little no nothing boy racers say
i have an ep3 05, but id dosent have the Premium seats... its it worth the change... or should i spend my money somhere else?
I would suggest you try the Recaro seats found in the Premier edition first before purchasing as they can be quite pricey. It most certainly holds you in better through corners but a lot do suffer from sagging bolsters because owners tend to sit on them before getting in the seat. Personally I would spend the money on better brakes/tyres or even a remap.
Awesome that you kerb weigh
Many thanks for the comment and support 😊 I figured it would be an interesting part to the videos.
yeah really is :)
is it possible when you do the weight of the car 2 translated from kilograms to pounds?
I shall keep that in mind for my future videos.
Do it yourself, you lazy fuck.
I thought all ep3 type R’s were in Kl/ph it throws me off when I saw the MPH there🤨
greetings from america ... i like this review ... i have a rsx/integra dc5 k20z1 u can review anytime .. keep up the good work
+flipstarr100 Hi, many thanks for your support, comment and offer :) I'll let you know when I come over to the US. Which state are you from? There must be lots of car events going on right now for you guys?
+PerformanceCars well you are very welcome .. I reside the great state of California in the capital called Sacramento to be more exact, ... it seems like there is events or car meets every weekend ... let me know when you are around me and my friends would love to support the channel. We have everything from boosted dc2 to swapped crx's... anyways cheers mate and once again keep up this good work on the channel it will be reallt big one day.
I have the 2.0 VTEC type s 2005 engine looks same as type r but 158 bhp , can i increase horse power in anyway?
thebanditsix yup u can. Full exhaust system from manifold, gruppe M induction kit, Kpro Ecu and a remap would get u 245bhp guarantee.
hmm, sounds pricey, not being funny but guessing you are a girl, how u know this stuff?
That's a totally different car with a different engine. The tune suggested is for k20a2 not for your engine.
Hate to nitpick but the engines aren't more or less the same between ep3 and fn2. The fn2 is based on the second-gen K20 with a different "RSP" head that flows a bit more, same head casting as the FD2. :) The fn2 engine has a little bit more torque everywhere, partly from the rsp intake manifold which has longer runners. The fn2 version has a different oil pan & oil pump, with balance shafts. They are similar for sure, but not directly interchangable between each other or to the opposite chassis/wiring, without modifications and adapting.
Dont compare an FN2 K20 to a FD2 K20 ;) different league.
lol. Between FN2 and FD2, the cylinder heads are exactly the same, the crank is exactly the same, the conrods are exactly the same... the only difference is cam profile, compression ratio and no balance shafts. :) And of course the bigger throttle body, tune and better header, but those are not internal parts of the engine.
TassieLorenzo The conrods are different the k20a and k20a2 are not the same and the fd2 is identical to the k20a engine.
My information is that the K20A and K20A2 (Euro EP3, export DC5s) from the first-gen K20s have the same part number for the conrods. Care to share? :) K20A is a slightly generic term I think, all Japanese K20s are called K20A, even the low output ones. The FD2 second-gen K20A should have the revised RSP head (with 312 cfm flow) like the K20Z4 FN2 compared to the first-gen K20A head in the JDM EP3 and DC5 (with 298 cfm flow).
JDMsweetness, I don't think the K20A has forged internals (all K20s and most Honda engines have forged cranks though), afaik only the F20C from the S2000 has forged internals. I would be interested to hear your source.
Owed both ep3 now got fn2 WHICH are well underestimated for sure fn2 much nicer looking and having a kid its much more space in the fn2 better looking inside the car seats better too torques a lot better in the fn2 doesn't feel like your hammering the motor that's my choice but wouldn't mind another ep3 too it was my first of these cars I genuinely don't by others cars now not since I bought my first Honda am hooked
thinking about swapping my astra vxr for one ? would this be a good move?
Hey Kee, I would personally give the EP3 a try as they are really fun to drive. But you may miss the turbo on the VXR. Go for a test drive in one first and see if you like it.
PerformanceCars how do you tell the difference between a ep3 and a normal civic type r, I’m looking for one but the adverts don’t separate them , is there visuals things or bhp or mpg or seats or alloys etc that give you a clue if it’s a ep3?
@@noeking9095 Type R made between 2001-2006 is an EP3. Type R made between 2007-2010 is an FN2.
Abdirahman Moh are all civic type r made between 2001-2006 ep3? I thought ep3 were special edition models within 2001-2006
@@noeking9095 Yes that is correct. There an edition called Prem or and premier and or premiere edition which I own which come with recaro seats type r embossed brake calipers red door cards and red carpets nothing performance related. I own one.
kinda silly wearing them racing gloves on normal roads dont you think?? nice review though man
which one is ur Favorite so far?
+CreativeBoy100 Hi, I like them all tbh - me being greedy lol. But if I had to choose one to live with, I would pick the EK9. What do you like?
I have a dc2r atm, about to get a second gen crx with type r running gear. We cant get ek9s in australia.
or in other words probably the ek9. its the only one I can't get my hands on, like a rare gem
+CreativeBoy100 Lol, I totally agree. And when you do find one, it's too expensive.
is this on coilovers?
No its on vanila ice cream
interesting that it has a k20a2 instead of a k20a.
I think it's a Euro version. Only JDM cars have the K20A.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_K_engine#K20A
I put a k20a in my usdm ep3. very happy with the end results.
5:17 holy fucking drone batman
come to Texas and review my civic si! xD
Thanks for the offer buddy! Maybe when I plan a trip to the States.
Well the red door cards lightened flywheel arent a premier add on, they come in all facelifts....
Thanks for letting me know
Was just about to say that
hasn't anyone in the fucking comments heard of racing gloves?
Lol! I don't think they have buddy 😅 But I bet if I wore the whole race suit and helmet, they would get it.
I thought the ep3 had a redline of 8,400 rpm?????????
That must be the JDM version.
Doug Maverick I don’t think this is jdm because the number plate is a give away, my ep3 Max’s out at 8400?? Maybe it’s remapped
Redline starts at 7900 on the revv range but it goes up to 8400 !
Jdm redline is 8400 rpm cause they have forged pistons and different cams and have 212bhp euro models redline at 7900
Um...why would you expect lag or heat soak in an N/A car?
Hi, I was referring to the intake that the EP3 has installed. It's sitting inside the engine bay with no cold air feed hence the heat soak. Whereas the lag, when I was driving the car, as I put my foot down, there would be a delay of power caused by the heat soak in the engine. I hope I explained that well enough.
+PerformanceCars you're absolutely right - open cone intakes are horrible. You probably experienced good throttle response as the Password JDM intake has a massive chamber which stores air and makes it available upon demand
I can confirm this.
I have the Mugen carbon fiber airfilterbox with a pipe that takes the air from just in front of the radiator, this makes the cold air flow directly into the intake. No lag here.
Ep3 way better lower weight 1 bhp less and inderpendent suspension fn2 heavy torsion bar gay heavier and 1 bhp more ep3 for the win
More regurgitated shite. Stop watching top gear reviews and reading forums.
Irs is actually heavier than torsion beam as a general rule. People like to parrot and say the fn2 is shit. The weight difference isn't as huge as it seems and there are a lot of things the fn2 does better such as superior steering and much better interior. Yes the ep3 is probably the better car to use on a track but as an overall package the fn2 shits on it. (Btw ukdm ep3s never came with an LSD where as all fn2s after 2010 came with one standard)
@@TheWretchedWorld forums say the same ep3 is a better car for the suspension system and we dident say fn2 its shit its just not as good as it should be the lsd is a plus although i dont know the think about the susperior steering
EP3,s were knowing for loosing the backend under heavy cornering that’s why the Honda FN2 torsion rear suspension and they stick to the road more I know cause I’ve owned both cars, all Renault sport cars have rear torsion and we all know they handle brilliantly
Chris Timbers I owned both and you’re wrong
what induction kit is that
It's a Password JDM item
It’s 8000
The only thing I don't like about Honda civic hatchs is that they only come in two door and you can't open the back windows...
I wish they offered with 4 doors
Fastest typeR is the JDM EP3 with 215 bhp.
Nope was beat by the FA5 CTR w/220bhp
explain to me why the yellow gloves tho 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Wielding gloves
ok guys help me ep3 or toyota 86 ?
which one is more practical and fun to drive and not broke my pocket much also i need air conditon as i live in dubai where there is summer all year long
Hey Rehan, both cars are really good fun to drive. I would have to say that you need to drive both cars first before buying. But for me, I will have to say the GT86 simply because it is RWD. Whereas practicality, it would be the EP3 as there is a lot more space. But saying all that, I would go for a S2000 but it's not practical at all 👍
PerformanceCars what about air condition?? for ep3 ??? does it cools well
As with all A/C systems I have come across they all perform the same unless out of refrigerant
rehan ali Suzuki swift sport ;) at least have a look. 86 would b nicer package to drive however driving and owning a swift sport I'm starting to love fwd more (I have driven 86 on track with caradvice)
Great review, I just wish the EP3's didnt have such a bad name, specially here in the UK. I've almost owned every car that I've wanted (S3 8L/8P, E46 M3's, JDM STi Wagon),
however the one car I still think im missing out on is the Ep3!!
Far Per they haven’t got a bad name here in the uk if anything people praise them where u been hiding
Better in someways, worse in others.. Things like the steering and interior are better on the FN2. But the EP3 is lighter, has better power to weight and better rear suspension.
If you want a car your are going to use on track. The EP3 is probably the slightly better option. FN2's are much better than certain BBC presenters getting back handers from Ford claimed they are. ;)
bahhhhhhhhh!
vtec yo!
Chris Martin is still in denial. Heres the proof.
why the childish music ?
Holy gay!
M8 that's 6 points on your licence wearing they gloves ffs
stop wearing gloves wtf might as well wear a helmet too
Stfu
I may just wear a helmet in future videos lol
But I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with wearing gloves?
It's a way to differentiate myself to other CZcamsrs.
go on the track then mate...your reviews are more in depth than almost anyone imo so yeah ..gloves are not necessary but w.e
Shredder_hero656 he wears cuz of hygiene reason he's fucking clean ass lol
Was going to rip you on the gloves too.....as it looks naff....BUT you can really drive as evident by you winning the racing competition!! So you can back it up!!
you call yourself performance car buy your reviews are about junk cars
Hi, it is a shame that you see the cars I review as junk cars. That means our roads are littered with junk cars right now. It's also a shame that manufacturers produce these so called junk cars. If only everyone is super rich and able to purchase and maintain expensive cars.
PerformanceCars corolla is not that expensive and no. Those cars you review are old. Its 2016 men. Manufacturers are pumping camry with atleast 200hp plus. The cars you review cant even catch up with a camry thats why its junk. You get my point? If yall want a good handling fast car then go get a sports car. 98 civics are not sports car. They make how much horse power? 150? 130? Add those intake headers. 170? You make kids believe that those cars are cool. Theyre not. Thats why people would rather buy 16k corollas oppose to 3k junks
my man review s common well known Japanese performance cars that have big following s. the vids are very informative and useful if you plan on buying one of these models.
You're really uninformed. First of all, why you use a example of a 98 civic? He's not reviewing a 98 civic, he's reviewing a 2005 Honda Civic Type R EP3 that puts out 200 BHP right out of the box. That HP is literally on par with the FN2 models he previously reviewed. These cars aren't junk. If you put a nice turbo on the type r it'll smack 5.0 mustangs all day long for half the price. Plus, no one even gives a fuck about a camry.
You need to do some research. 2005 vs 2016 is not a fair comparison. Put some bolts and tune on the Ep3 and rematch vs the "camry" and see what happens. These are tunings cars, not typical rich boy cars that never are modified. And we love the olds Type R models, if you dont like it is very simple, not see them.
