  • After reviewing the Civic Type R FN2 not too long ago, I take a drive in this Civic Type R EP3. The engine is more or less the same and the handling not differing too much from each other. Really love the sound of the Mugen Twin Loop exhaust.

    Hi Bond, I have read that the steering on an EP3 is a bit of a let down, especially when compared to other Hondas, e.g. DC2. Did you mention that the facelift has fully electric steering and pre-facelift hydro-electric? Might this be why?
    I also read somewhere that all Hondas from 2006 onwards have drive-by-wire throttle, do you know if that includes UK EP3s? I would prefer the response from a cable throttle. I have seen a nice Cosmic Grey Premier Edition for sale but it is an '06 model. Great videos btw.

    • @PerformanceCarsChannel
      @PerformanceCarsChannel  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Chris, thanks for the comment and support. All EP3's have electric power steering regardless of pre facelift or facelift. When compared to the DC2's hydraulic steering then I would say that it isn't quite as good especially when driving hard on track but that really is up to the driver's preferences. Daily driving wouldn't make the EP3 inferior in the steering department with it's electric steering.
      All EP3's also have drive by throttle too so there's no need to worry about that. Good choice on a Cosmic Grey with the Premier Edition package 👍👍

    • @PerformanceCarsChannel
      @PerformanceCarsChannel  Před 7 lety

      I would suggest you try the Recaro seats found in the Premier edition first before purchasing as they can be quite pricey. It most certainly holds you in better through corners but a lot do suffer from sagging bolsters because owners tend to sit on them before getting in the seat. Personally I would spend the money on better brakes/tyres or even a remap.

      That's a totally different car with a different engine. The tune suggested is for k20a2 not for your engine.

  • @TassieLorenzo
    @TassieLorenzo Před 8 lety +3

    Hate to nitpick but the engines aren't more or less the same between ep3 and fn2. The fn2 is based on the second-gen K20 with a different "RSP" head that flows a bit more, same head casting as the FD2. :) The fn2 engine has a little bit more torque everywhere, partly from the rsp intake manifold which has longer runners. The fn2 version has a different oil pan & oil pump, with balance shafts. They are similar for sure, but not directly interchangable between each other or to the opposite chassis/wiring, without modifications and adapting.

    • @chrismartin1530
      @chrismartin1530 Před 7 lety

      Dont compare an FN2 K20 to a FD2 K20 ;) different league.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo Před 7 lety +1

      lol. Between FN2 and FD2, the cylinder heads are exactly the same, the crank is exactly the same, the conrods are exactly the same... the only difference is cam profile, compression ratio and no balance shafts. :) And of course the bigger throttle body, tune and better header, but those are not internal parts of the engine.

    • @TheKevzx6r
      @TheKevzx6r Před 7 lety

      TassieLorenzo The conrods are different the k20a and k20a2 are not the same and the fd2 is identical to the k20a engine.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo Před 7 lety +1

      My information is that the K20A and K20A2 (Euro EP3, export DC5s) from the first-gen K20s have the same part number for the conrods. Care to share? :) K20A is a slightly generic term I think, all Japanese K20s are called K20A, even the low output ones. The FD2 second-gen K20A should have the revised RSP head (with 312 cfm flow) like the K20Z4 FN2 compared to the first-gen K20A head in the JDM EP3 and DC5 (with 298 cfm flow).

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo Před 7 lety

      JDMsweetness, I don't think the K20A has forged internals (all K20s and most Honda engines have forged cranks though), afaik only the F20C from the S2000 has forged internals. I would be interested to hear your source.

    Um...why would you expect lag or heat soak in an N/A car?

    • @PerformanceCarsChannel
      @PerformanceCarsChannel  Před 8 lety +5

      Hi, I was referring to the intake that the EP3 has installed. It's sitting inside the engine bay with no cold air feed hence the heat soak. Whereas the lag, when I was driving the car, as I put my foot down, there would be a delay of power caused by the heat soak in the engine. I hope I explained that well enough.

    • @K20TypeR
      @K20TypeR Před 7 lety

      +PerformanceCars you're absolutely right - open cone intakes are horrible. You probably experienced good throttle response as the Password JDM intake has a massive chamber which stores air and makes it available upon demand

    • @matthiasaaronpedersen-sval4354
      @matthiasaaronpedersen-sval4354 Před 7 lety

      I can confirm this.
      I have the Mugen carbon fiber airfilterbox with a pipe that takes the air from just in front of the radiator, this makes the cold air flow directly into the intake. No lag here.

The weight difference isn't as huge as it seems and there are a lot of things the fn2 does better such as superior steering and much better interior. Yes the ep3 is probably the better car to use on a track but as an overall package the fn2 shits on it. (Btw ukdm ep3s never came with an LSD where as all fn2s after 2010 came with one standard)

    If you want a car your are going to use on track. The EP3 is probably the slightly better option. FN2's are much better than certain BBC presenters getting back handers from Ford claimed they are. ;)

      PerformanceCars corolla is not that expensive and no. Those cars you review are old. Its 2016 men. Manufacturers are pumping camry with atleast 200hp plus. The cars you review cant even catch up with a camry thats why its junk. You get my point? If yall want a good handling fast car then go get a sports car. 98 civics are not sports car. They make how much horse power? 150? 130? Add those intake headers. 170? You make kids believe that those cars are cool. Theyre not. Thats why people would rather buy 16k corollas oppose to 3k junks

      You're really uninformed. First of all, why you use a example of a 98 civic? He's not reviewing a 98 civic, he's reviewing a 2005 Honda Civic Type R EP3 that puts out 200 BHP right out of the box. That HP is literally on par with the FN2 models he previously reviewed. These cars aren't junk. If you put a nice turbo on the type r it'll smack 5.0 mustangs all day long for half the price. Plus, no one even gives a fuck about a camry.

      You need to do some research. 2005 vs 2016 is not a fair comparison. Put some bolts and tune on the Ep3 and rematch vs the "camry" and see what happens. These are tunings cars, not typical rich boy cars that never are modified. And we love the olds Type R models, if you dont like it is very simple, not see them.
