Roland Fantom UPDATE 3.02 AFTERTOUCH Improved!?!?!

- Roland released an update for their flagship keyboard workstation. A highly requested fix was applied during this update. It was related to the keyboard aftertouch function.
Watch this video to see what happens in real time while programming aftertouch and settings used to trigger it and modulate sounds via aftertouch.

The update makes little difference - the actual pressure needed to set it in motion is far too great - IMHO, it is a hardware issue, poorly designed aftertouch sensor.
Yeah, I think you are right. It's weird though some people are reporting some positive improvements from it. It still requires too much for me to enjoy using it.

Still have my Fantom G's 6/8, and you are right, the aftertouch is tough, you don't have weak hands. Best aftertouch is on the XP-30 which I still have. You may have a better response with an expression pedal on your Fantom for aftertouch, it is a different way to control it. I prefer the keys.

Ahhh the notorius roland fantom after bash. Yeah lots of force required, some one fixed it by soldiering a potentiometer on the aftertouch circuit board. Im afraid it was a engineering blunder on rolands part, luckly i can mcgeiver it potentially in the future ( i dont use aftertouch much) but i feel bad for owners who like to use it :(
All tried, even with resistor added, this aftertouch is unplayable.

@@JuliusDeBerryJr Yep - on my F8 I still have to park my car on the keybed to activate A/T - BUT the new sensitivity range at least is better than the ON/OFF sensitivity previously - so, on the 88 it is still unplayable without physical key pressure.... 😞
I think it’s the keybed on the Roland Keyboards as well…I’m glad they tried to address the issue…ppl are going to complain regardless
Some people have found work arounds. But it's a mod that has to be installed inside the board.

Then it's not aftertouch. It's modulation using an expression pedal.
Aftertouch is a feel thing that you use when you play it's not just the effect that it gives. But the way you can express yourself in HOW the notes are played.
@@JuliusDeBerryJr valid point. I see what you're saying. It's pointless to call it aftertouch if you need a pedal or anything other than your fingers to activate it.
Don't waste time: only Hulk could really use aftertouch on a Fantom...

I just got my Fantom about a week ago and I didn't know it had aftertouch until the other day. Might as well just pretend it doesn't have it. I have to press so hard I feel like my desk is going to collapse, good grief. I'm sticking with the pedal for aftertouch.
Yikes. !! Hey did you buy it used or new? I ask because if it's used, it may not be updated. Just a thought. It is still pretty difficult though.
@@JuliusDeBerryJr That's a solid point, I did buy it used, but I updated it to the latest EX firmware as soon as I got everything plugged in. I wish I would have known about the aftertouch issue sooner, I didn't check it out before the update. Thanks for the video!

The Keybed has three settings for velocity. light, medium and hard. check it out...
I know about the settings. Are you taking about aftertouch though or velocity?
The video and update are about aftertouch not velocity.

I don't think the aftertouch was improved to a substantial level, I mean I can see that for some of the instances where you play, you were using your shoulders to activate more weight into the board and that's just ridiculous. I wonder if they actually calibrated the aftertouch for the Fantom 6/7 since they have lighter keys (instead of a hammer action like the 8, so that would naturally need more effort)?
I don't know how this compares to the Kronos/Nautilus (since you've had those) but it seems that the aftertouch is executed better by the synth companies (Arturia PolyBrute, AMS Hyrdasynth for example) compared to the "big boys" (Yamaha, Roland and Korg).
Kronos is easier for sure. And yes the Fantom still requires a good amount of pressure to activate.
How would you compare to the new MX8 by Yamaha if I want to purchase my first 88

@@JuliusDeBerryJr the keyboard alone. I had the XS and I wanted to get another workstation but I’m tossed between Fantom, Montage and Kronos. I definitely want it to be somewhat user friendly

I use foot pedal feel like I have more control . I wish they would add Jupiter x AI I really in joyed it and the drive knob

Aftertouch sensitivity has improved a bit, but it's not perfect. I downloaded the update, set the Aftertouch sensitivity to the strongest, and it actually improved somewhat, but the upper key range requires a lot of pressure. It's good that they fixed it, but to be honest, I was waiting for a big update. After the 3.0.1 update, this is just a simple bug fix update. I love Fantom, I've made a lot of music with it, I've uploaded a few to CZcams, but I'm also disappointed. Still no user arpeggio editing. Step Recording is perfect for creating arpeggio data, but you can't assign it to a specific key. It would be nice if the sequencer could also record the KBD SW Group function on the PAD button. There are songs where multiple Splits are set in different parts of the song. I've made my KBD SW Group settings, but it would be better if I didn't have to reach over to the right side to toggle the PAD buttons. Montage is able to record the different Scene settings of the 8 Scenes with the help of the Scene Chain, so it automatically steps the Scene and the different Split variations in it. That would be cool on Fantom too. The Montage M set the bar very high, so the Fantom also needs a serious update, but mainly in the functions.
Actually a big update is on the way. Roland has a web page up with the Fantom designers saying that soon ACB will be coming to the Fantom, along with other updates!

Aftertouch is very tough though. But the keyboard is just great overall.
