Roland Fantom: 6 or 8 - 61 or 88, How many keys do YOU need?
I wanted to do a quick video to show you all what my frame of mind was concerning making a decision on keeping my Roland Fantom 6 or 8. I walk through a few things that I think are important to keep in mind as far as work flow and convenience between having a weighted piano or a synth action keyboard at your disposal.
Please enjoy and let me know any thoughts you have.
Thanks.

    I finally figured out how to fully connect the Nautilus with Cubase! Users need to forget about using the Nautilus Editor software. That's not going to get it done. It's just like you explain in this video, Julius. The Nautilus has to be setup as the Audio Interface. As you mention, in Global setting > Audio, assign USB 1 and 2 to L/R. You can connect your headphones into the Nautilus or use the standard outputs to hear audio coming from the DAW. Disable "Local control on" in the midi menu (as explained in this video). Now, add a Midi track. Use "All Midi Inputs" and "NAUTILUS SOUND" as the output. Make sure the midi channel is either set to any or 1. While this track is enabled you should be able to hear your Nautilus. You are now ready to record in midi. When you play it back, the Nautilus sounds will be audible. Very important to know, you cannot export the midi to audio like a standard VST. If you try, you'll get an empty track. You'll have to add an audio track and record the audio from the Nautilus in real time. You'll have to Solo the Midi track so you don't bounce all the audio from the other tracks. And that's it. It look me over 12 hours to get this all worked out but now I can use Nautilus sounds, have the control of using midi, and it all goes through a single USB cable. Amazing. I hope this helps someone else that is breaking their head over this. Thanks for the video, Julius!

    question...when the quantize finds 2 or more notes are closer to the same spot, so you might get gaps as you showed, but does it then play two notes at exact the same time? That could be trouble in polyphony and also often you can hear it is two notes in stead of one. I had that experience in the early days of quantizing. Compliments on the vids.

    Hi Julius, am following your videos regarding Montage M, Fantom and Kronos for a while and am a bit confused what to do. Right now I have a Montage 7 (not M) , a Hammond XK5, a Hydrasysnth Keys, a Kawai VPC-1, a NI Komplete MK3 and a Novation SL 61 MK3. The issue is, I have 3 Masterkeyboards and though I have a MIO XL, wo proper configuration and channel routing they simply have no sound. Though with Keyscape I have the best Rhodes and Pianos, with IK Multimedia B3X the best organs and with lots of VSTs really cool sounds .. But the moment I get creative things have to go fast .. All Keyboards on, Cubase in record mode (which seldom works as audio Channels are not working sometimes after start) too bad. Then with Montage, XK5 and Hydrasynth I have it all to be creative to some Drumloops or whatever Band in the Box .. however .. The VPC-1 has such great keys, but its almost always switched off .. too bad. So as I already bought some great sounds for the Montage my plan is the following: 1. Buy a Montage M8X (as I really like Poly AT) 2. Buy a Fantom 6 or 7 which can really do the organ part and more (I really dislike the Montage Organs - they seem so static) 3. Stay with the ASM and get more sound sets - as this cannot be replaced with Fantom or Montage M 4. Sell Montage 7, VPC, XK5 and Novation 5. Do Studio work with VSTs with the NI Kontrol MK3 6. If needed go live with the Fantom as its lightweight But now my question is: 1. Should I stay with the Montage 7 and maybe someday upgrade to a PolyAT M7X if it ever comes as I know how to use it 2. Or should I buy a Fantom 6/7 and upgrade it to EX, thought I have the Roland Cloud subscription I have lots of the Roland Sounds already? I can still use VSTs in a live setup but what I really dislike is the Channel AT and even a bad one .. 3. or vice versa, stay with the Montage for a while until they maybe offer a M7X and buy a Fantom 8 Hope you or anyone is willing to give his/her 2 cats regarding this. thx in forward..

    You can key note sequences by going to the Step Seq/LFO tab on each EXi instrument. You have up to 32 steps and you can choose whether to loop or make it a one-shot. You can program each step by semitones and you can choose the note length of each step. Look for a button on the instrument (it could be AL-1, MS-20 etc,) that looks like a ladder lying horizontally, and enter the step sequencer tab. It's a fantastic tool on AL-1 for those looking to create chiptunes of the 8-bit era.

    Thanks for the videos. This keyboard’s interface is so cluttered, dated and so unfriendly. Not intuitive at all. You can do a lot with the keyboard if you do t mind wasting time jumping and possibly getting lost on a labyrinth of pages with an incredibly cluttered interface. I really tried to like this keyboard but they really need to get with the times. No bounce/exporting audio mixdown in the background, no audio export of stems in the background (even iPad apps do this) so many things they need to do to the interface.besides the great piano and e piano sounds and the fx they really just recycling their old keyboards.

    • @edgaba
      @edgaba Před 18 dny

      @@JuliusDeBerryJr Perhaps I’m being unfair. As a live performance keyboard a think this would be amazing. I was looking for something that could replace a DAW and I was intrigued by the audio recorder and the fx routing possibilities. I even did a few videos on the machine but I did have some problems with the interface. To many unnecessary clicks. The sequencer is too cluttered, no piano roll, the audio recorder is faulty, no pitch correction, no XLR inputs. To mixdown a finished project you have to first sample it than save the resulting audio to a thumb drive and there is no export of individual stems! And also the saving to the HD architecture is archaic, it almost like working on a DOS system or windows 3.0 from the 80s. Even in the mixer to access mute and solo you have to go to a different page. To access overdubs or replace you have to go to a different page, for just about everything you have to make 2 or 3 clicks navigating through unnecessarily cluttered screens. I’m not saying it’s not powerful, I’m just saying the interface could be better, more efficient. Companies like Akai, Roland, and Yamaha are listening to their users and adapting their interface accordingly and making updates regularly. Korg seems more interested in aftertouch and they are selling it like it was the greatest invention! AT has been around forever. Korg has to get with it. Look at what Akai is doing g to their MPC system. A complete overhaul to make it more DAW like without loosing the old ways. Their keyboards have XLR inputs, roland with the Fantom has XLR inputs and a loop. Asked sequencer that resembles LIVE. I’m just saying if a company is going to make a workstation they should make it right it is 2024 and the needs of young and old producers like my self have changed. I think the concepts of recording in a DAW or workstations are universal so why not make an interface that follows, we need piano rolls for editing, we need to be able to bounce/mixdown in the background in any format, bounce STEMS in any format, navigate easily through the interface. You have to admit you e gotten lost with the interface a couple of times in your videos. I appreciate what you do. I also know where everything is in the nautilus and what it can do. This is not my first rodeo. In my opinion I’m not denying that the nautilus is powerful I’m just simply stating that its interface could be better and to be able to unleash that power is not very efficient. I’ll give you a real case scenario: I recorded a song with these amazing sounds from the nautilus, in the nautilus sequencer. I was very happy with the results. I went to record the vocals hmmmmm no XLR so to use my nice mic I plugged a Mic Mechanic and used it for XLR inputs and Fantom power. I recorded the vocals and picking the different takes was clunky since there is no way to mix one take from many. Also no pitch correction but that’s okay cause I do sing in tune. Next I recorded background vocals, using the locate functions was okay where the harmonies needed to be etc. now I’m assigning FX which was a joy since the FX array it’s super powerful. I’m mixing but to solo or mute I need to keep switching from page to page rather than having everything available to me in one screen. No way to customize this. Now let’s listen to the song… what!? The vocals don’t line up sometimes, there are ghost notes of the vocals triggering where they’re not supposed to! Gotta reboot. Hmmm 3 minutes to rebbot another four to load the file. Okay found the ghost notes, to erase them is no easy task. Okay mix is done let’s mixdown… what, I have to sample the song real time?! Okay the ghost notes are back hmmmm I’ll record the vocals with Logic X let’s just bounce the STEMS what?! No way to bounce STEMS! I’m not going to seat here and bounce in real-time one track at a time so let’s make the perfect mix of the instruments and use it in Logic. Oh I have to bounce to the internal HD first and then to USB (unnecessary) later that week a producer/engineer from UK Mike Senior (heard of him?) loves the song and wants it for the Music Vault at Cambridge in London. Guess what? yeah he needs separate STEMS oh ooops sorry I didn’t have them because the archaic interface on my supposed to be new and innovative machine can’t do it. So yeah studio pros need an efficient way to do things, the nautilus is better for to be used as a live performance keyboard. End of rant.

    there are more details on the into the higher frequencies of the montage M sounds that didn't affect the low end details which is a plus for most sounds. Then the stereo pans are more definite. I think which make the montage a good upgrade. however motif ES has been a beast of them all since.

    Great review man! One thing to note, the Fantom 8EX is only about $300 cheaper than the Montage M8X. Even now, the regular Fantom 8 is about $3600. So, not even close to half like you were saying. I think you were thinking of the Fantom 0 series, which is half the price.

    • @JuliusDeBerryJr
      @JuliusDeBerryJr Před 28 dny

      Naw. I was specifically talking about the Fantom 8. Used prices (at the time the video was released) vs the new prices of the montage. And those prices were based on prices that I had access to at the time of the release of the video. I paid 2000$ for my Fantom (used) but from an authorized dealer.

    So basically yamaha listened to everyone who were disappointed that the first montage didn't have an onboard sequencer? Am I correct that this keyboard has an onboard sequencer reminiscent, nearly identical to the original Motif ES8? It seems like it but any verification would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Julius. Thanks for all your quick tip videos. They really help a lot. I have a Nautilus 88 that I purchased last year and I'm getting the change battery message. From what I can deduce from the web, the battery is a CR2032 Lithium Battery. The same as used in the Kronos. Do you know if that's true? I ordered my Nautilus from Sweetwater in July 2023 and received it Aug 8, 2023. I think it's really strange that the battery already needs to be replaced. I find myself disappointed with Korg & Sweetwater. Glad I have a Fantom 7 EX! Take care & thanks again.
