I’ve been on the fence about grabbing one. For the price the build quality issues shouldn’t be there. Software is software but if you’re going to price yourself as a premium product this thing should not have any leaks

The smoke leaks are seriously shocking. I still haven't got my grill up and going because the entire control panel fried before I could even get through set-up, but the fact it leaks smoke is even more insane.

I have been waiting to see if anyone posted all the problems this thing has. Bought mine 2 weeks ago from Home Depot because I knew I could return it if I had issues. Just felt I needed that security for $4,000 grill. First day, everything worked and set up perfectly. And yes, its a beautiful grill and smokes like a chimney. But after one week of cooking on it; started smoking a pork butt for 8 hours. Halfway through, I got a flame sensor error. Had to to shut the grill down and after talking with Traeger, an hour or two later we’re back and running. Of course I had to move my pork butt to my trusty PitBoss. Long story short, not only did it happen again, right after I prepped my wings to throw on there. Not only did it happen again, my temps started being 30% higher or lower than what I was set to. Needless to say, I was done, and kindly returned the $4,000 grill and the $400 in accessories (grill cover, folding table etc). The induction worked great, and the grill cooked great when it worked, but that’s just too much cash to be having all those issues. There’s just too many more solid pellet grills out there for a fraction of the price, and zero drama. No more Traeger for me.

Dude, finally someone posted the issues. I have the Timberline XL version and my leaks around the door too. I figured, once it gunks up it would seal off the leaks. I didn’t get the seasoning help on start up either but I was able to do it manually. My biggest issue I had was on Saturday the day before Mother’s Day i was smoking a brisket for 8 hours over night, I took the brisket off and wrapped it. Put brisket back on and when I went to use the meater probe it wouldn’t connect to the grill. So I did forget the Bluetooth device and was going to reprogram and poof, screen died and everything shut off. I was on the phone with traeger for 3 hours and finally they gave up and said motherboard is fried. They are sending me a new one now. I finished brisket off in the oven and it ended up being amazing. Biggest issue is I have a 4500$ paper weight on my back patio with plans to have a pool party this Saturday for another cook. I’m so disappointed in Traeger. One more gripe, the doors aren’t level and they rub. I’ve tried all the adjustments and I still can’t get them straight. I’m trying to be patient and I hope this is the only motherboard that I’ll need to replace. Btw the induction cooktop is awesome. Meater probes sometimes connect, sometimes they don’t. Also I got a flame sensor issue the day before this thing died. Other than that, when you first hook it up to your WiFi, it took me 3 hours of failure until it finally hooked up and then another 2 hours of updates. Don’t think you’ll cook the same day you get this home. I’m going to follow this to answer any other questions people might have. I’m also posting this to every review on YT
Forgot to mention, I sold my 3000$ pitts and spitts maverick 1250 for this. I never had one issue.

Great comments. Brilliant on saving the brisket, well done. What do you cook at for an 8 hour cook? 275?
I would be pretty pissed. I have some large beef ribs I’ll do for 8 hours this weekend, man o man I hope that doesn’t happen, but I know there’s a chance.

@@onmatters3112 I smoked at 185 fat cap up with super smoke on. Regardless of internal temp I usually pull brisket after 8-9 hours. Wrap with butcher paper and bump temp to 250 if I have 8-9 more hours before I serve, given a 3 hour rest in cooler as part of that. If you are running out of time, finish at 275 but always rest for minimum of 3 hours.
My new recipe is meat church holy cow completely covering brisket, with holy gospel for color. Like 2 to 1 application. Then I add a light coat of killer hogs TX run for thicker chunks of pepper. I’m telling ya, it was a great brisket.
So 185 super smoke and put brisket on around 10:30ish, pull brisket and wrap around 7-7:30 am. Bump temp to 250 usually finishes around 1-2 pm, but i look for internal temp around 198-200 rest in cooler and ready to slice around 6 pm.

      @onmatters3112  Před 2 lety +1

For new grill owners of the new timberline XL (also known as gen 2) let me share my frustrations and experiences. My problems were as follows; grill would not pair the with the Bluetooth meat probes or the side burner and the app showed it was always offline; and then it would try and update software and get stuck in a downloading update state. Bottom line up front, it's currently working but took 4 days to 'self-fix' itself. When I first set it up it connected to my network without any problems and then went to a downloading updates screen which locked me out of doing anything else. After a day of nothing happening i turned the power off and rebooted it (push power button to off, unplug, turn button to on and wait 10 seconds, turn button to off, plug back in and turn button back on to power it up). The grill would show a screen and allow me to control functions until I backed out to the main menu at which time it would immediately go back to downloading updates and lock me out again. after allowing this to go on for hours (even overnight) and doing multiple reboots and reading everything I could find I discovered my display firmware was way out of date, but the other firmware was ok. I used their network connection app called 'RouteThis' (discussed at Traeger's support website) which showed I had a good connection w/o problem and then I finally called Traeger support on Sundary (they are open 7 days a week). He was unable to find any problems and escalated the ticket and said someone would get back to me in a couple of days. This morning (Tuesday) I checked the grill and discovered it no longer said updating software! I tried to connect the Bluetooth which previously wouldn't pair and now everything paired easily, and my app now was working and showed the grill was online. However the display firmware still shows it's on an older version so my guess is some other firmware just hadn't finished the install to hand it off back to the grill. I have no idea what changed but it appears this thing can take days to update itself the first time so if you are having similar problems and you have a strong network connection just leave it alone and be patient for 4 days and see if it works out. Also, there was lots of talk about how long it takes to heat up. I found after the pellets were in the chamber and it wasn't setting up for the first burn it would go to my 400 degrees seasoning setting just as fast as my propane grill does. I saw no slow heat up issues at all. My best guess is there was a firmware update that just didn't finish installing and it took a long time to resolve itself. i'm hoping it will see the display firmware still needs updating and do that too now that everything else seems to be working. I've been frustrated for the last couple days and lost faith in this grill, but now it seems to be doing everything I expected it to do and i'm having high hopes again. I share this so you start the process knowing it could take days for the software to update so you too don't get frustrated thinking your grill is broken.

I was worried after seeing some of the poor reviews and problems. I got mine yesterday. Set up went great. Seasoning went great. Wi-Fi setup was easy. Instructions said to pair Bluetooth probes during initial seasoning, but the probes had no charge and their instructions said charge for 4 hours before first use 🤷🏽‍♂️. The software update of 45 minutes after seasoning was frustrating since there did not seem to be an option to “Update software later”. Smoked 6 ribeyes, 6 filets and reverse seared them in cast iron pan and the results were very good. Looking forward to doing some slow cooking this weekend. So far I am pleased overall with it.

I bought a Timberline 1300 a bunch of years back. It ran “fine” and had occasional heating issues, but the build quality wasn’t what you’d expect out of a $2200 grill. It’s competitors at that price point we’re more solid. Larger less finicky igniters, more stainless, more heavy duty, more features…. And ultimately less issues. (flare up issues with the 1300, and…. A paper thin drip pan that melts during flare ups and is always out of stock) Recteq in particular seems to beat Traeger at every price point. I was a Traeger customer once, but after operating in greener pastures for a while, I’m not coming back.

One other thing worth noting is that this grill DOES NOT work in the rain. We had a mild rain while I was cooking and the pellets get wet very easily. They gummed up the auger and it was a doozie to clean up.

I just bought one, not the XL, the LRG. Been having issues, 1 of the meater probes wouldn't connect (resolved but finicky) 2. App won't connect even though grill says online-this resulted in several troubleshooting steps to get reconnected and app working but this being my 2nd weekend cook since getting it and I'm having buyers remorse! At nearly 4k with accessories and it being Traeger's 2nd gen of the Timberline, you would think they would have all the bugs worked out for what they're charging! Another thing, I was trying to calibrate the wire probes, following the steps on pg. 24, and my grill doesn't give the option to "calibrate probes" as depicted in the manual! I called tech support and they said it "auto-calibrates" which in my opinion is an oxymoron. Anyways, sorry for the long comment.

Because it is a new product, I don’t think it will go “on sale” anytime soon, but you may be able to negotiate with a dealer. There are Traeger models well under $1000 if you are anxious.

Tough question. There’s a bunch of others and they’re probably as good-Weber versions 2, recteq, etc are probably just as good, but I’ve never owned them. I’ve had an ironwood, timberline 1300, and this one, and the consistency inside the pit is really good. I think ironwood might be the best bang for the buck. But I’m gonna have to think before a final answer.

The searing is actually really nice. There’s lots of ways to skin that cat. You could run inside to kitchen burners, but it is nice to have it there.

@@onmatters3112 I have the Timberline 850. I think they've dropped that generation of Timberline all together. I agree with you that the Ironwood is the best option in the line up at this time. The new Timberlines are 3x the price. I already have the Meater probes and the Thermoworks Signals which are both bluetooth and a portable butane burner if I need something on the side.
If I were to get something different, I'd probably go with the Lone Star Pellet Grill. They're made in the US, even the electronics and they are built like a tank.

My board on my Timberline XL died while going through the setup process as well. It was producing more of an electronic smell and was incredbily hot during the seasoning rather than rolling smoke out of the back vent. The panel shut off during the seasoning. I was initially able to get it back on and it kicked right back into the seasoning set-up. After the seasoning set-up was complete I was attempting to pair the meter probes and after a few failed messages the entire panel shut off. I spent the next 3 hours on the phone with Traeger troubleshooting and trying a factory reset. They ultimately determined that the entire hopper and panel required replacement and mailed parts. A certified traeger repairman is supposed to come tomorrow and replace the part. Not overly enthusiased with spending that kind of money and after weeks I still haven't cooked a thing.

Poor quality. Traeger went downhill with these new grills. I purchased a pro 575 had temperature issues with that they couldn’t fix. Took it back and got another one at Home Depot. Had the same issues. Asked for my money back. Instead they sent me an Ironwood 650. Had temp issues with that also. Finally got my money back and bought a Recteq. I’ve had zero issues with the recteq. The Traeger quality is not there anymore. They are selling grills that don’t work.

  • @vjarizpe

I had issues too. None of the leaks, but mine wouldn’t get above 140. I had to take it apart and the part that held the pellets was a little bent from factory and let some pellets drop onto the bottom. The tolerance for that lip where the auger meets the fire pot is very slim.
Also, it would not connect to my wifi and would tell me it was too weak, when I have fiver and it was 12 feet away. I had to get a whole new router just for the Traeger connected to the same router it said was weak.
Overall, cool now that it works, but really bad for early adopters.

I love Traeger as a company and their products but boy, are they a little tone deaf releasing this overprice pellet grill during a recession and hyper-inflation. We may even be on the verge of a potential global food shortage; why in the hell would they release a $3800 pellet right now? Gas prices are almost 5 dollars in Oklahoma… Oklahoma!!! If you’re making at least $150000 a year, then dropping $3800 on a new Traeger shouldn’t be a big deal. If you’re making under that the would just save my money or buy a less expensive pellet grill. Right now everyone should be cutting back on their spending, saving their money and stocking food. This new pellet grill is nice but shouldn’t be seriously considered for the common working folk (just my opinion).
