Surprising to some, the Long Island Iced Tea doesn't actually contain tea. Most likely named for it's tea-like appearance - this also hints to the drinks origins during prohibition when some drinks were made to look like tea.
During US prohibition in the 1920s there was a drink being concocted called the Old Man Bishop - created by Charles âOld Manâ Bishop. This was in a small community called Long Island in Kingsport, Tennessee.
Legend has it that Bishop threw together his drink using rum, vodka, gin, tequila, whiskey instead of triple sec and also had the addition of maple syrup. His son later refined it in the 1940s making it closer to the well known Long Island Iced Tea recipe that we know today. It was this recipe that was featured in a Betty Crockerâs cookbook in 1961.
Another 10 or more years later we have another person that claims to be the creator of the Long Island Iced Tea, Bob âRosebudâ Butt. He claims to have created it for a cocktail competition for Triple Sec at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island in the 1970s. His recipe closely reflects the recipe that most of us know today.
Originally the drink was most likely built over ice but a quick shake to combine the ingredients will do it justice. Rosebud's recipe calls for equal and full measures of each ingredient but I advise opting for 15mL/22.5mL (0.5 oz / 0.75 oz) measurements if you plan on remembering your night.

@12 you sound sad my guy.
Great version. As a former bartender I can't remember a drink I refused to serve to guests more than the Long Island. Drunk as hell in the late hours coming up to the bar:
I need a Long Island!
Me: Oh no you don't sir
LOL..nothing worse than when they don't know when to quit
A few years ago, I was one of those guys :-D But damn, they taste good if made properly
Kikikiki. Hilarious
I wish you were my bartender when I first got introduced to them, had no idea they were so strong lol
@Riley 225 all you gotta say is you a alcoholicđ
The best time to drink the long island ice tea is all the time
Iamn00bish /SHOdan2 wrong. Only on those days that ends in ---day.
But thatâs only seven days a week!
Same with wearing striped sweaters
The best iced tea I've ever had. đ
you like to live dangerous huh
I have developed a strong interest in bartending recently and Iâm really obsessed with watching your videos! Well done mate đ
Admit it, you just come for his amazing smile when he does the shake
Thanks Franchet!Glad you're finding the vids useful :)
Couldn't have found a better mentor đ
check out common man cocktails also
Me to well I went to a bar called the Lime Yard had a Laguna Beach Cocktail now I just want my own bar at home and serve nothing but cocktails why would anyone want to drink any other way!!!
Itâs a different kind of beauty when someone's positive enough to admit their fault
Really cool of him to go back and redo something to show he's always improving and learning
before watching: ahhh ... finally, sound like a light cocktail made of tea for nice relaxing moments
after find out what it actually made of: am already drunk watching this
dude that smile while shaking cracks me up all the time ;D great videos!
It's a thing now... can't not do it. Cracks me up in a bad way?? >_
@@StevetheBartender_ no, in a good way. Its like your trademark xD
S i love it. So wholesome
Who is here for the smile and shake? :)

Timbre of Steve's voice is also a factor
Christian Flores yep! His smile, his timber of voice AND his accentâ€ïžđđ
Christian Flores hahahahaha bruv you read my mind
love his smile...it makes my day...
Love your content & dig your entire Vibe! Youâre not gimmicky or animated; just real chill with a cute smile! Love that you get str8 to the point after some cool bar education! My new fav channel!!
Dont worry about the haters Steve. Keep making great vids.
Also, I like the background music in the video.
Thanks Nookie! Music is by Julian Avila, he makes some pretty sweet beats: Julian Avila - Nostalgia: soundcloud.com/julian_avila/nostalgia
Haters?who could hate his videos honestly.... they're just jealous....new subbyđ„đ„
Rc cola is the best to use
Agree. Haters arenât worth his energy
he's like the bob ross of bartenders
Man, gotta respect this guy. Puts the emphasis on "responsibly" every time. Gonna try some of these recipes tonight tho. Thanks Steve. Appreciate all the time and effort put forth. keep it goin'!
Cheers to that!
the way you smile into the cam is beautiful, thank you for blessing us
I come here to his smile when he shakes the cocktail because it is so energetic. How can you be mad at him with that smile? :)
I just started mixing drinks... Had my first margarita last night, and tonight it's long island iced tea. This is definitely my favorite so far. I love your vids, bro, and that smile đ
I only watch his videos for that smile hes making as hes shaking the drink
Great video Steve! Thanks so much for making it! Really saving people like me who were just promoted to bartending really not knowing much about how to make even the standard drinks. You have helped lots with this one.
One of my favourite cocktails! Thanks Barkeep Steve!!
Found your vids recently, very addictive.
Well done!
I've drank a variation that used cranberry juice instead of coke which was refreshing - still deadly!
Long Beach Iced Tea I believe: czcams.com/video/ui6VWSUP1co/video.html
MrFredenza has a couple videos making different variations. One subs the coke for grape juice for a Gilligan's tea thats really good.
Nickey Lee thanks for sharing, I havenât seen his channel before but he has plenty of vids up!
The way you are mixing is TEMPTING đ Badly I want to taste this awesome cocktailđ
Your attitude was great. It's cool you did more research and still staying flexible for those at home making these cocktails. cheers!
Dear Steve, the smile you flash everytime you shake (whoof) is definitely your trade mark!
p.s.: never mind the haters and the critics please.
Damn, I just filmed this to come out for next week. Great job on the video as always. You timing is immpecable,
Thank you for so good-spiritedly admitting you were wrong and fixing it. This is the model we should all follow. Cheers!
Rewatching these videos make me feel happy, even if it's not a drink I fancy. Thank you for your hard work, editing must be a pain. Take care! Greetings from PerĂș!
My experience with Long Island Ice Tea has taught me a couple of lessons: 1. You will look AMAZING if you go on a liquid diet for a week before a special night out. 2. Never attempt to drink a Long Island Ice Tea after being on a liquid diet for a week before a special night out. đđđđ€·đœââïžđ€Šđœââïž
This looks sooo delicious, and thanks for the long Island ice tea history!
Sir, you rock and keep smiling đ
This is the version of Long Island Iced Tea that I'm going to use! So glad I found your channel! đđ
Thanks Colleen! Enjoy the Long Islands! đŽ
I like how you donât take yourself too seriously. Itâs entertaining and refreshing! Keep it up đ€đŒ
I love that each time he shakes something he gives a smile to the camera
I love that you give the history of the drink. Now I'm inspired to make one!
I love long islands and always wanted to impress my friends in college with a drink. This video helped a lot and i have finally made a great one. thank you for the amazing video
I make a lot of my own drinks at home now that bars aren't open/safe to hang out in, and my long islands always come out tasting way too strong and appear to look like just soda in a glass. Then, I went to an outdoor-seating bar last night and had a long island that looked exactly like the one you just made, and it was perfect!!! Definitely going to try and follow your method, next time I make one!
Instead of sour mix, I squeeze a lemon piece in the side and add sugar syrup. This drink is actually very rarely found made traditionally, due to today's laws, so I think you did a great job in either video!
Many thanks Casey!
You mean our laws against distilling? Government can't STAND not getting their money for us to drink
That killer smile gets me everytime! đđ
LIITs have always been my number one go-to drink when out partying. I always start of my night with a LIIT as just one is enough to get you drunk enough. Best cocktail in my opinion. And a great video, definitely something I'm going to be referring to when I'm making one. Cheers.
Those are really strong drinks!! I like when you include a bit of history about the drink. Don't worry about the haters, you just keep being Steve đ
Yep, super strong these are - almost 4 ounces of booze in this version.. it really extended my filming time with the amount of takes it took... it was laughable! No worries, I'm pretty thick skinned :P
@@StevetheBartender_ I'm glad you werent sipping on that drink between takes or you'd probably still be there, on take 537, doing it from the floor of the bathroom
Most bartenders here REALLY don't know how to make the Liit. GLAD SOMEONE did it how it should be. Lol
Nice one Steve
His voice... N that smile.... Mmmmmmm... Oh yea, the drink. Yessssssss
I loved this video (first that Iâve seen from you) I used to drink Long Island iced tea when I lived in NYC and loved them.
His subs all come from the shaking smile. Incredible lol
Just got off work, perfect timing!
Nice! Do you work in a bar?
I work the nightshift at a local milk processing plant lol. As a californian I can say your long island is spot on đ
@@Josh-id8bz Yeow!! Bit of an improvement on my last video attempt ;)
Just made this exact recipe thanks to this video.
Thank you Steve, your the bomb.
Shared your "Long Island Iced Tea" video to a friend on Facebook. Made it the other night and thought it was delicious! đđ
reminds me of my first time out alone, two long islands in and I'm thinking hmmm there's a lot more booze in here than tea and is it just me or does that bartender have a twin lol
A good LIIT is my favorite cocktail. A bad one is just BAD! Keep shakin' and smiling. :D
great video Steve! there are so many small variations you can make in the recipe and it'd still be a long Island. I'm an American bartender, and I would make it exactly like this if I were at home making it for myself or friends. if I were at work I would make it in a hurricane glass...
.5 oz vodka
.5 oz gin
.5 oz white rum
.5 oz tequila blanco
.5 oz triple sec
fill nearly to brim with lemonade
splash of coke
its really going to depend on your bar/bartender's recipe. again, great video!
So cool to hear you talk about this because I live in Kingsport!
2 or 3 of this fine cocktail with Netflix and a companion on a Friday or Saturday night sounds like a pretty solid weekend plan đ€Łđ€Łđ
Haha đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Canât imagine being angry at Steve
Lolz!
I worked at white water rafting in colorado and I always got these! The BEST !!
This video helped me a lot this cocktail was my exam today
I watched this video and at the time i pulled this cocktail
So thanks a lotâ€ïž
Steve, Greetings from Philadelphia. Your videos and very interesting and informative. I appreciate you efforts. My question is...are all the people in your country as patient and polite as you? For instance - your kind explanation of how people complained about your previous Long Island Iced Tea recipe and how you would change it and make a do over as a result of their complaints. Being born and raised in Philly...not what I am used to hearing as a response to criticism. You are a good guy! Cheers.
I'm Australian and I can assure you he's just a nice guy - not everyone here is like him, especially in the cities.
@@janamassingham5226 don't forget it depends on the cities too, people from Melbourne are very different to people from Adelaide and etc.
The first time i had a Long Island ice tea I got drunk off of one drink. Now i can see whyđ.
Where u 21
liit gets me the perfect amount of tipsy so that is what i have when im at a party first and then just stick to light beers
same i went to a wedding and wanted to try it and woah that hit fast
@Stefania Maican No, that's why nearly everyone has a Long Island Iced Tea horror story.
Same heređ
One of my favorite drinks, cheers!
Thanks for this guide. I really appreciate it.
He is so cute when he smile and shake đđ
It's strong but goes down smooth. That's what makes it potent. You think, I'll have another, next thing you know, you're drunk. I've had this before, but I only drink one, and pretty much nurse it until the ice melts.
I made the mistake of having 2. They didn't hit me until I was half way through the second one.
Yeah, had way too many the other night
I really like when you explain about that cocktail it help me alot
Keep it up
Canât wait to try this recipe! Long Island iced tea is my go to drink
Me wondering during the whole video: whereâs the fuc*ing TEA
âTHIS IS THE BEST TEA I EVER HAD!!!â
Reason im hear đđ
Saving this for a Friday night. Great video
One of the best drinks out there. I highly recommend this drink to try once.

That smile...
That God dam smile
Itâs habit now đ
That's where the trouble started...
And that arm đ
Giving up alcohol for lent - this will be my first drink back!
I had my first Long Island Iced Tea yesterday. I didn't know anything about the drink but it was delicious and made me feel very happy! Thanks for the video and best wishes from the UK.
Haha, Iâm sure you would feel pretty happy after a Long Island or two! đ
Yessssss Long Island iced teas are my jam!
personally I only serve these with lemons, and thats how I generally see other people make them too, a lot more tea-like imo
5 years of bartending, never seen it w lime
I prefer lime to lemon in my iced tea so I see no complaints as far as less tea-like. I'm not from Australia, but it might be a regional thing for Steve?
Jeffrey Penkoff you can use either, Iâm just going off âtraditionâ
@@Gualirob, "tradition" is a cage for the mind, built by peer pressure from dead people.
notahotshot lol not when youâre bartendingđ if I order something typically itâs because thatâs exactly what I want...especially with drinks
You say annoyed, the haters just hating because they jealous they donât got the smirk đ
Long Island Iced Tea, wow. That was my drink when I was a drinker!!!!!
That smile though......đ
Can't wait to try it.
One of these you feel great. Two your feeling no pain. Three you wake up asking where are my pants and who the hell are you? đ€Ł đ„đ±
"Bartender, beer me dos long island iced teas"
Thanks for another great video
Steve your a legend love the smile during the shaker bit made me laugh
I thought I'd died and gone to booze heaven when I had my first Long Island Iced Tea. It was the most delicious hangover I'd ever had. (Note: I didn't know it was from Long Island, Tennessee. I always just assumed it was from Long Island, New York).
The origins are debated like with many cocktails... I did mention Bob âRosebudâ Butts - he was the one from Long Island, NY - 1:33
Steve, you can do no wrong with your drinks in my book... :-)
Happy to see you back man
Back? Where did I go? đ
Great drink Brutha. Since I was home, I added a full ounce and a half and the drink was FANTASTIC
This is so LIIT! Long-Island-Ice-Tea I see I click fast hehe!!!
Haha, same with everyone else... 1,000 views in 10 mins - wowsers!!
Got any jungle juice recipes up your sleeve Steve?
Yo his smile at 3:43 made my heart skip a beat lol quite the handsome fella
Amazing cocktail! Simple and yet stiff and tasty. This and Mai Thai are my 2 favourite cocktails.
Love a good Mai Tai too!
He cringed as he tasted it đđđ âas you can see it taste nothing like youâd thinkâ
I'm still amazed at how this tastes nothing like the alcohol that is in it
His smile means the passion that he has doing the drinks the right way
I did a bartending course a while back and I still have the booklet they gave us. Looked around in it and for long island it just says the 5 whites and coke. Interesting to see the variations on the drink. Love your videos and keep it up!
That is what you drink if you want to be tipsy af but not look like a complete alcoholicđđ
who can get angry at u for making it different. lol. he's got the looks
Excellent video! I'm partial to Long Islands and I think this one looks great!
My favorite drink! Great video!
So you see, that's where the trouble begin. That smile, That damned smile....
Always wanted to know how to make this drink...you made it so simple, cheers.
BIGGEST Grin when shaking got me. It's like he knows we're genuinely entertained by that as well đ.
