Do Launch Control and Anti Lag Make You Faster? Testing Multiple Cars at the Horizon Drag Strip

  • Forza Horizon 5 just introduced antilag and launch control - but how valuable are they? Is antilag worth installing on all race turbo builds, and should you leave launch control on or off?
    In this test I tried to eliminate all human variables by turning on auto steer and auto shifting. This meant I just had to hold down the gas and let the car do the rest. It's worth noting that this deoes short shift most cars, leading to a slightly exaggerated turbo lag effect, and the auto steer doesn't do the best job of keeping the car straight on launch, slightly affecting launch control's ability to grip. However, throughout more of my own manual testing, this did not meaningfully affect the outcome/results of the tests.
    There are other aspects to consider with launch control like the controller layout launch bug and clutch slipping, but these are less consistent, less well known, and even less possible on certain hardware, and were not considered for the testing in this video.

    i have noticed for a while that in forza games it seems like the game doesn't simulate the grip drop when wheelspinning, which is why you always see everyone mash the throttle on world record runs. You also understand why at the start of the race it gives you a cinematic camera angle instead of putting you in the car and allowing you to rev the car to a certain RPM for launching, it doesn't matter since mashing the throttle is the fastest. i guess this launch control feature finally proves it for all. The only benefit of it is in RWD cars where the wheelspin causes the car to rotate, in which case you are losing speed.

    I feel like anti-lag and launch control are nice features but they won't be changing Rivals leaderboards drastically. As for anti-lag, it's only applicable for race turbos. So if you build a car without race turbos, then you don't need to go out of your way to get it. Plus, anti-lag on a twin turbo car is a bit redundant as twin turbo cars don't have as much lag compared to other cars unless you want those pops and bangs.
    Launch control is nice especially for those rear-wheel drive cars that are a bit tough to launch. But it definitely feels a bit slower for all-wheel drive cars, since you can launch faster letting off the clutch on manual w/ clutch. But if your car launches bad already, having launch control can somewhat help.

      One of the worst game design choices they made in this game is perhaps the lack of a countdown timer. It opts for a useless and frankly annoying camera pan instead, which is cool for the first few times, but frankly gets repetitive and annoying over time, while not actually saving you any time. And it's straight up not fun; you can't control when to let off the clutch if you don't have manual clutch turned on, often resulting in a bad launch in high torque cars. Combined with the AIs that do not make mistakes and always make the perfect launch, it's just frustrating.

    From what i have looked at and experienced, the effect of antilag depends on shift speed as well. In cars with sequential/dual clutch shifting, the antilag effect is small while in a standard shifting speed antilag is more apparent. So in short the faster the shift the less you get out of antilag. Also from what i can tell i think antilag might just increase the length of your power band on the low end of rpm

    • @marcoling2173
      @marcoling2173 Pƙed rokem +1

      That is true, since what anti lag does is reducing turbo downtime between shifts. The longer the shift time, the more pressure the turbo losses and slows down, which needs to be spooled up again when you get back on throttle. Naturally, if your transmission is blazing fast, then there's not much turbo slowdown to begin with, so the effects of anti lag would be far less significant.
      I don't believe anti lag should extend your power band towards the lower RPM range, even though that appears to be what this game tells you. I think the game's interpretation of the power/torque graph is immediately after a gear shift, instead of how people normally dyno cars IRL. In the former case, anti lag would indeed increase your power/torque in the lower RPM range since you would have more boost sooner, but in the latter case, IRL people start the dyno graph from a constant low RPM, where the normal anti lag should have no effect, unless you enable rolling anti lag, which is more of a software tuning thing rather than hardware. I digress, but I believe people typically do not run dyno machines with rolling anti lag enable on the car. In fact I'm not sure it's even possible to use rolling anti lag at such low engine speeds closer to the idle speed.

    In series 16 or 17 my big single turbo cars would just stop spooling at the beginning of a race, forcing me to hold the clutch and dump it right after other cars started moving. The launch control does alleviate that (though I haven't checked if the issue was fixed) and it is really nice for the cars that need it. Being able to set it for specific cars would be cool but it's fine enough how it is.
    The ant-lag is super fun but situational for me. It really compliments the character of rally, drift, JDM street, and other builds. It can take away from the feel of many builds though with how intrusive it is so, as someone who's not super competitive, I've been picking and choosing what I put it on.

  • @TakeNoShift
    @TakeNoShift Pƙed rokem

    Anti-lag is going to be more noticeable and beneficial on cars that shift slower I'd imagine, along with single big turbo cars. So while on a non-anti-lag turbo car your turbo would have to wait for your turbo to spool back up after shifts, anti-lag keeps your boost up so that once you get back in gear you don't have to wait for it to spool. Of course it also helps for when you're off throttle for any other reason. The reason anti-lag causes pops and bangs like that is because it's literally just extra fuel, mixed into the exhaust gases, detonating in the manifold to increased exhaust pressure, and therefore spooling the turbine wheel.

    the only issue with this test is, you can't really fit race turbos below A, where antilag would be most useful (technically you can, if you leave the handling and weight alone, which makes you a lot faster than antilag)
    p.s.: I love the Subaru and Audi S1 antilag, those are the most realistic sounding and actually realistic. (I doubt they had the opportunity to actually record a V12 twin turbo with als). It gets annoying after some time, so I only put it into rally cars

    You can now reenact the Audio from a shootout in Forza, the game gets more immersive by the minute.
    Jokes aside I do like both of the Systems, Launch Control seems a bit iffy on some cars but the Anti-Lag is cool to mess around with albeit loud as hell.
    Only thing I really don't like is that Anti-Lag is unbalanced since there's no downsides to it at all on 99% of cars, I've even had some Modern Rally builds lose a tiny sliver of PI from mounting Anti-Lag over Race Turbo for some reason. Nothing too major but it was enough for me to add another Driveline or Flywheel Upgrade to the Car, on some cars I've also seen that it provides a slight torque boost over normal Race Turbo which is odd.
    Kinda wish they'd given it a bit of a PI Drawback over normal Race Turbos or even just artificially given it higher weight or less power to give you a reason to think about your choice.
    For now though I'm planning on keeping my builds thematic and not just slamming Anti-Lag on everything.

      LC is probably negligible in an AWD car during races depending on gearing. I know back in FH4 when AWD swap meta was everywhere, I'd have my 1st gear ratio set to a point where I just pin the throttle at the start of a race. I'd imagine that's what most people did with AWD in FH4/5 since the start of a race is cinematic and you can't do anything anyway.

      @@skywalk3x a properly tuned car will be quicker, the tc just slips the clutch for a second then dumps it... a build that doesn't slip and geips as soon as you launch will be infinitely quicker.

      @@nickhenley1338 well then that’s not launch control. Launch control just like real cars are
      to launch faster than if you weren’t using it. I be done a lot of drag racing and launch control is more consistent than trying to hold revs with your foot. Thanks for your opinion though because your not wrong either

    They had to do it much earlier. After one year there's so much "outdated" tunes and tuners have to rebuild it. Maybe it's good for casual players. For me TC and free anti lag just makes game even more braindead.

    LC isn’t automatic. You have to hold handbrake & throttle at the same time
