I looked into the developer of this game because I was just absolutely fascinated. He's a bit younger than your typical indie dev and went straight from simple 2d demos to a fully animated 3d adventure. You can actually see in his devlogs how it started as a Hylics clone before literally morphing into the incomprehensible body horror experiment shown here. There's something endearing about someone going out of their way to make the weirdest game possible even if they lack the experience. The best way I can describe this is it's like a playable zolo album.
it makes sense that it started off as a hylics clone because hylics 1 was already pretty meaty, with the turning into a skeleton, the meat grinder, the walls and furniture made of clay coils making them look weirdly like brains or intestines... This just intensified that, while the official sequel to hylics leaned more into the fantasy RPG direction

Yeah I will say that the game is incredibly nothing-burger-y but it was aparrantly made by a child with no experience so props to them for starting their career. I hope they stray from mimicking Hylics so closely tho

What we’re really seeing is the expansion and development of an artistic conversation that began some time ago that both this game , and hylics, and I’d say even games like space funeral even occupy.
Basically an artistic language that prioritizes visual texture , impressionistic color and narrative dream logic by way of cut up. where gesture of movement (like would be implied in final fantasy by a moving sprite) is abstracted into any gesture of movement , highlighting its abstraction from normal gesture.
I look forward to seeing many more creative people develop this nouveau-surreal style.

Livestream track challenge sounds interesting. I also really can recommend the synplant2 vst. Its really great for fun stuff. But youre still able to use it for impressive results!

It’s fucking with me being able to tell almost the entirety of this games soundtrack was made with FLEX presets (built in fl plugin), ones that I’ve personally used at that
I love the idea of my "Hylics-like" games coming out cause Hylics was a really cool and unique experience (although that experience would be cheapened a bit if too many games like it came out). I do enjoy how esoteric and abstract everything is, down to the character design, musical tones, and atmosphere.

I feel like there was a creative vision but then the creator gave in to their intrusive thoughts that screamed "How can I make this crazy random?"
Honestly this makes me appreciate how clear Hylics is by comparison. Even though this is inscrutable, I don't actually think it should make itself more understandable, I think the absolute weirdness is a part of the charm. Style is substance, and this is great!

I love this sort of esoteric fever dream style of game with dialogue that teeters between nonsense and profound and visuals that seem pulled straight from the seizing mind of someone on the verge of death.

Some think that games like this take no skill to make. It’s just a bunch of nonsense. But I think it does take a certain degree of talent to make something like this game.
Clearly a lot of effort was expended to make all the animations and models and such. There certainly are pretentious or lazy games but obviously I don’t think weird equals bad.
With that being said I’m not going to pretend this game is deep or anything. In fact, it’s pretty dumb. But it’s a a good kind of dumb.
Not really sure how one could see that, it has plenty of bespoke art and has to be planned with less concrete concepts to use as direction. I don't really care about the idea that it is pretentious, the internet has a huge hate boner for abstraction, surely some pseudo-poetic 'look how clever my writing is' affer would be more truly pretensions. as for dumb, well I guess it is not really tring to be deep so kinda, but that does not really reflect on much ultimately.
There’s a massive difference between something like this and the influx of shit-out egglikes we were getting for a while.

hello, i am here to explain game's combat, the heart next to the enemy is their hp, the faster it beats the less health they have, the heart on top of the screen is your health, same thing with fast beating. The thing where there are weird explanations for organs explained what they do (kinda): kidneys - normal attack, stomach - poison debuff, lungs seem to be a powerful attack, magnet builds a defense that tanks 1 hit, i have 0 fucking clue what rat and guts do but they seem to be just additional attacks, trenbolon buffs and heals you, the other skills also do something you can kinda understand by just watching. Also enemies can do all the same things a player can - they can poison you, do normal and strong attacks and can build defenses
edit, not edit: estrogen ball literally explains what it does when obtained - enemy speed and strength debuff, i have no idea what hammer does
also to note - all this information is from pure observation, but as far as my eye sees, it is correct
this is so fascinating, strange, and uncanny. really loving these vibes. but also i kept having a pavlovian reaction to the achievement sound
I actually really like games like these where it just chucks you into it and expects you to figure it out on your own, kinda like Tunic.
But this game takes it a step further, and at the same time, looks far less frustrating about it because the punishment for not figuring it out isnt so bad. If anything, punishment looks to enhance the experience by not just simply being a "game over" screen, but a part of the world
Also, one of few games to kind of genuinely make me unsettled at the sight of blood because everything else makes no sense, but seeing that thing you just fought in a pool of its own blood is a little too real comparatively

Boy has it been a while since Vinny extensively played such a psychedelic fcked up game. Very good decision to not stream this on sunday because it would have gotten severely shafted.
RememberCrypt worlds? That was a 5-Hour game and he finished it. Games like these are absolutely amazing to watch vinny play, if he actually puts in the time to immerse himself. Great to see him return to form (when it comes to psychedelics games) once in a while.

The thing about Hylics was that there was just enough actual info in all the nonsense that you could figure out what was going on, and there was a followable story and gameplay system under all the bizarro. This is just bullshit for bullshit's sake.

Yeah the battle system is weird. From what I can tell so far, the attacks play animations, but with no indication of what the attacks are actually DOING battle-wise, or if there are any differences between each attack. And there's not even any indication that I can see of how much health you or your opponent has. And sometimes it's difficult to tell if the animation is your attack or the opponent's attack or what is going on. (The animations do look cool, but still)

I don't think this is making me feel so much fear of the unknown but rather fear of encountering some ridiculously evolved lifeform and knowing you are completely obsolete. It feels like if a huge task force surrounded any one of these creatures it would simply evolve a small orb growth and send out a pulse that turns every attackers bones into just flesh while keeping them alive on purpose

As interesting and psychedelic as this is, there needs to be a certain amount of coherency when it comes to absurdist media. The threshold doesn't need to be high, but stuff like this is difficult to put players in the same headspace as the developer who has a much clearer comprehension of their own work.
If you compare this to Hylics (which this game wears on its sleeve), Hylics has enough to sense to convey the bare minimum of the plot and characters. I couldn't tell what the motive of the characters in this was. All I know other than beings are using other creatures' organs as weapons.
Still, it was fun to try and understand the combat which was shockingly the most understandable thing in this.
You redditors need to take an History of Art class or something. Not every creation needs to have meaning.

But also, yeah, not *every* piece of art needs to make sense.
I don't think it necessarily needs that, you just probably prefer it. In my opinion, the real worst thing about this game is just the fact that it's so Hylics inspired. With art, there's kind of a limit to how good it can be when it's so derivative cause you always have that "yeah but it's Hylics" aftertaste. So I like this game, but that thought is just something constantly present in my head when I'm looking at it.
I respect this viewpoint, but admittedly, I just love how much this breaks my brain.
