These games are like Hot Pockets to me. Like sure, they're cheap, objectively lackluster, and you shouldn't make a habit out of them, but when everything around you is in flux and life is kicking your ass, sometimes a Hot Pocket/Le Scary Liminal Backrooms Game is the best grounding tool you can ask for. It helps remind me that I'm still me, and I'll still come out the other side as me, because I can still enjoy a Hot Pocket and I can still laugh at the Skibidi Liminal Man.
Unlike a hot pocket, you can't use this game as an emergency fleshlight tho

People will say that these kinds of games are fast food,sure,but I do truly think they cooked with that snake monster's AI. The fact that it moves faster than you,but slows down juuuust as it's catching up on you,always breathing on your neck for you to make a mistake, seeing it make a straight line for you if you turn back, plus that design...it feels unnerving no matter how many times you actually die. Which is a real achievement,brcause the loss of tension after a player loses one too many times is very common in horror games!

The inventory being kept is a stroke of genius, if dying reset you to zero not even most dedicated you tubers would stay for long enough, but now the game kinda rewards you with permanent progression as long as you achieve something

I worked as a Janitor for a school district it was an easy job that paid really well but man once it got dark out and you were there all alone it got unsettling especially if it was an older school I can't tell you how many times I got jump scared by those stupid mannequins that have their organs showing
Schools are super unsettling when no one else is in there. Reminded me of one time I was in my college library and the motion-sensor lights went off cause no one else was on that floor and I got spooked by a distant life-size cardboard cutout of Big Bang Sheldon because it was in the shadows and I thought it was a real person. And then I felt really dumb when I realized.

@@jada._marie What? What would that even look like, Isaac is topdown isometric. Liminal spaces is about thresh holds and the space directly before/after it, being able to see past and around said thresh holds kinda removes the tension. It just wouldn't lend itself well to horror, unless you had a lighting system like in Gloomwood or Hot Brass.
But that said OP; if you want "creepy spooky space but roguelike", I recommend Golden Light: Meat Song (I think the Meat Song suffix was added after EA release). Its p much exactly what you're describing.

This game is a fascinating case of people's milage varying, how scared people are by this game seems to have no consistency across youtubers I have seen play it.
I think the Poolrooms game was better because the fact you're clearly alone but there's some hints at someone else being there is what makes that game feel more liminal, at least if you ask me

I had this on as I was trying to sleep last night because I thought it would just be a bunch of uneasy moments, like that other poolrooms game and every time a horrid jumpscare thing would happen, It would scare the crap out of me, but somehow not enough to fully wake me up.

So the Poolrooms section infuriated me so much that I went and did some research to try and figure out what you're actually supposed to do. Apparently, the exit is through that area with the steam jets and the green spiral structure, but each time Vinny got there, there was an impassable gate. I don't actually know for certain how you open it - since I can barely even find any footage of people actually completing this part of the game - but I assume it has something to do with the machine where you insert the keycard, because otherwise, I have absolutely no idea how you get through it.
Either way, it was definitely the lowlight of the whole experience, which didn't really win me over in the first place what with its inscrutable game mechanics, instant-kill enemies, and reliance on loud, scary noises and cheap jumpscares instead of a tense atmosphere
I think it's that weird spiral upstairs where he presses the button with the screen that's supposed to open the gate. Still infuriating as shit.

Very good idea to have a piece of paper on the floor in the first 8 minutes that tells you exactly what the monster is, what it does, what to do, and take absolutely all of the mystery out of it. The whole SCP thing has also been so flanderized, if you want to actually make something scary it's best to avoid those tropes as much as possible. EDIT: There is a big ear man.
To be fair this is basically how SCP: Containment Breach worked. And I mean they're randomly generated and rely on you exploring everything to find them.
The only real difference is that SCP works in that in the discovery of how these entities work they become even more terrifying because of the implications of what it could do.
That doesn't really happen here.
The thing a lot of people forget about the older SCPs is that they were heavily censored and redacted to give the illusion of mystery and depth. Even back in the old days when it was just SCP 173 on 4Chan, the fact it was given the item number "173" invoked a sense of dread thinking about how there's more of those things out there. The point of SCP, at least the original ones, was that it invited you to try and understand the setting despite the fact understanding the setting was deliberately made impossible. It constructed itself in a way that everyone would come to their own conclusions/use their own imaginations, and that's how it created horror. It wasn't just a bunch of spooky monsters being locked in a spooky prison complex, it was like discovering the truth. Lifting the grey veil of reality, discovering that every conspiracy theory is true, everything you knew about the world was a lie.

Probably the best use of monsters in liminal spaces I've seen. Feels like they operate on nightmare logic, your legs won't go fast enough to outrun them, if you think they're close, they probably are.
This and the poolrooms game are like the 2 sides of the backrooms coin. Monster filled survival vs exploration walking simulator

At least the game acknowledges that the player is actually physically holding a camera and works it into the gameplay. Lots of games just act like the protag has a VCR for a head or somethin.
