Once I saw the map of all the connecting worlds I finally got it:
This game is the Mario 64 equivalent of Yume Nikki
i thought the exact same thing when i saw the map lol

I like how binyot tries to make his own lore for the B3313 Super Mario 64 cartridge being Corrupted
The cartridge was found behind a 5 below with Saddam Hussein’s name scratched into the label
It was also covered in fried chicken and cheese sauce, great to see they managed to get it working

The editing may look like it's cutting all over the place; I assure you, the game is really like that. You just find a dozen new doors and end up in a new level, or the same door to a new level. It has the pacing of an actual dream you have after playing too much Mario 64.
This mod is the perfect representation of the word “liminal”.
Everything feels like a dream. The halls are connected seemingly at random, you’ll get to a different room no matter how many time you go through the same door, the music is sometimes missing an instrument, some of the music is straight up from other games, I could go on. I mean, come on the map at 6:41 straight up looks like a toddler scribbled on a piece of paper, and yet that’s more than likely the actual layout of the castle in this mod.
FR, I’ve had so many dreams about childhood games where the levels are different or in some way liminally altered (and yes I did just turn the word liminal into an adverb deal with it.)
This mod(?) is exactly what those kind of dreams are like. For example, I’ve had a dream where there was a volcano with lava lakes in Sentinel Beach from Jak and Daxter. Shit’s weird

There's a group of people that seem to seriously believe in the whole personalized mario 64 cartridge.
That there's all kinds of weird matrixes built into the code that let's an n64 game somehow generate all kinds of different level structures lol
That's basically the premise of "every copy is personalized," once you get past the weird lore and RP stuff. It's just old dreams and faulty recollections from childhood.

Given that was probably the goal they fucking nailed it. Even the dialogue is somewhat nonsensical and the grammatical errors just makes it feel even more dream like. Like it makes sense just barely where your brain is just like “ok this makes enough sense I guess” in a dream. This mod is a masterpiece honestly

It’s downright stunning how they managed to blend real beta content with dream-like worlds that only resemble it, the health meter occasionally being different prototypes, charles martinet’s voice being the stock WB sound effects, and even beta text in some of the levels too, it’s so impressive

My lore for this mod is that this version of 64 is possessed by an entity that just wanted to make an interesting game, but it didn't know what gamers want, so it just mashed a bunch of genres together to see what works.

It actually would be kind of a sick plot if a space probe capsul crashed into earth containing a single, modified copy of SM64. The scientists radio date the capsule and find its from billions of years ago, released near the beginning of galaxy formation.

I feel like taking notes and mapping this game out for yourself as you play would be really fun and satisfying. At least for me. Of course, with the new version a lot is probably different again.
The way you just walk into different rooms of the castle and the music is just oddly different gives this really cool atmosphere
I'm really glad b3313 is getting as much appreciation as it is because I find the gameplay genuinely really enjoyable and engaging. Not even considering the weird and creepy things that people tend to focus on there's something so enticing about just exploring the castle and finding all the different levels. A level that I found very recently is only discovered when you punch open the base of tick tock clock in the upper floor of the vanilla castle area and there is nothing indicating you can do that, which really makes me wonder what else I might have not discovered yet. I'd argue this has comparable length to Mario Odyssey in terms of all the content it has
This is what I imagine most people want when they ask for another 64 like, definitely me at least. The exploration of the castle just added something to it that a level to level design can't give.

B3313 has to be one of the best liminal space games there is. You know the game and can feel the castle and outside areas becoming more and more endless. And just when you think you seen it all.
You are dead WRONG. And you just BARELY scratched the surface of the mod. Gives you a terror feeling to it and the music works great with it.
This rom gives me a weird sense of comfort and nostalgia which is especially odd since I never really played SM64 that much as a kid apart from at friends houses on occasion. It’s like I’m remembering something that I forgot.

It was because of my love for SM64 and glitches/corruptions/mods that i found Vinny's channel, then I became a fan of his streams, all thanks to his SM64 corruptions video

While I LOVE the full streams, and adore getting to fall to sleep/draw/grind in games to them, there'll always be something wonderful about having these bite-sized 'best of's' to enjoy while having lunch. Always happy to see the edited content! (Really do wanna eventually edit some of my favorite Vinny moments into its own video, but for now, I'll enjoy the official stuff lol)

Yeah it's really cool, the games give off different vibes but at the core are quite similar. I wish this was a bit more subtle with its horror though, I feel like if they toned back some spooks it would be a lot more effective

I think Mario's purgatory is the best way to describe this. Running, collecting stars for eternity in a search of something that might not be even achievable.
While the whimsical areas and scares were the highlights of the streams, the best part is the pure comedy of Vinny repeatedly dying and getting sent back to red lobby just for entering the wrong door or pipe
I cannot wait for him to play the new update when it comes out!

@@derocross3545 nah, that's a different dev, not the original (chris, who you'll find in this comment section too), not only that but this "new" dev is being kind of a scumbag not respecting the wishes of the original dev and, to keep it as short as i can, you could say the unofficial "unabandoned" update is pretty much fueled by petty drama that's... not really worth following. either way v0.9 is already pretty complete as is with the only issues being duplicate star IDs, a couple unintentional crashes and the ending areas not being accessible through normal means. but because of childish harassment from this new dev, chris doesn't have motivation to continue developing officially. i'd say either be content with 0.9 as is or wait for an unofficial update coming from someone else not motivated by being a bully online.
I got curious and looked into possible updates for both the "official" and unabandoned branches and immediately noped right on out after I saw how much of a mess things are on both ends.
There's a fixed version of the abandoned version out there in the wild that's done by the creator that IS NOT the unabandoned version that came out a couple months ago, so there's at least something to check into. Having played all of them, unless you're really trying to get every star, they're pretty much all the same with the exception that the unabandoned version lets you access the ending without cheats, but its not implemented correctly, so it just unceremoniously drops you into a set of post game special stages that are unfinished and, if I understand the videos I saw correctly, most of these special stages are unbeatable and will crash your game, so there isn't much more to see
Its a shame that we're probably not going to see more either way, because B3313 is easily one of the most fascinating mario hacks out there, not just for mario 64

I advise you to play the entire stream on full sauce in the background while you do other stuff. It's very slowburn so you won't miss a lot, but it is very mesmerizing.

the structure of this with the way you travel between different worlds using weird esoteric connection methods really reminds me of a yume nikki fangame, like when vinny pulled up the map i got flashbacks to the yume 2kki explorer tool made by flashfyre lmao
