    If you use Synology, Go SHR.
    Always have at least 1 drive as redundancy, If one fails you don't lose anything and can swap out the bad drive for a new one.
    If you have a 6bay or higher NAS then go for 2 drives as redundancy or at least have another pc with everything backed up to it, If it's really critical data or priceless family photo's then you may also want to have cloud backup offsite as a 3rd redundancy.
    My other tip is don't try and be cheap by saving a few bucks on getting a smaller size HDD, Always go for the largest, You will fill it faster than you think and will regret it later as it will cost you more to replace all those smaller drives, Much easier to buy a few large drives to start with then add more later, Rather than fill all bays with small drives, UPS is also a must have.

  • @Techthusiasm
    @Techthusiasm Před rokem +11

    Synology is my go to as well. I use it for a lot of things along with media storage. I'd strongly recommend using the Synology specific RAID though (SHR). With SHR, you don't need to have the same drives, and you can easily expand later with any type of drive.

      I always start my setups with 2 (SHR) drives so I have mirroring (1 drive a copy of the other) and then add drives as needed. This is a good setup even for a small-medium business with just a handful of users. SHR is definitely the way to go with these NASes.

      Silly question: I currently have two 14TB drives with about 10+ TBs of movies on each of them connected to a Zidoo with usb c. If I wanted convert these drives to a RAID I know I can’t simply insert the drives into a synology nas because of formatting, but can I buy an additional 14TB drive, format it, insert it into the nas and move the contents from my current drive to the new one? Then rinse and repeat for the second full drive? Thanks!

    • @eckobase5807
      @eckobase5807 Před 3 měsíci

      @@ml6008pretty much, you need a single drive to migrate the data. Blow away the drives and build a shr 1 i only recommend shr 2 for businesses and then copy the data back and then add it to the pool and you end up like me with a 12 bay Synology

  • @jadan2000
    @jadan2000 Před rokem +9

    i would seriously recommend people using raid configs instead of Jbod. If any of those drives die, you lose whatever files are on that drive, with a raid config, yes you may lose some space, but when i drive dies, you don't lose everything on that disk. and you can hot swap with a spare drive.

      You don't realize how great a solution RAID (SHR provides this) is until you loose a drive and it just keeps running while you order and replace that drive. For the cost of one drive - it's a cheap insurance policy.

    Trust me. It’s best to use RAID. I had a pretty big failure and I was still able to pull all my data and recover. I can still add a disc and expand with peace of mind. No need to buy five discs at once. For the price spent on the UPS another disc could have been purchased for SHR.

    Very nice and articulate beginner setup video. Only thing I’d personally never do is JBOD, especially if you are concerned about down time. I have 3 Synology’s and run SHR, one is SHR-2. Oh, and definitely need a UPS and if at all possible a 3-2-1 backup strategy.
    All that said, if all you are storing is ripped DVD’s for Plex, and you don’t care about down time and effort recreating your NAS and restoring your data, I suppose it’s OK. 😉

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  Před rokem +2

      Hah! Thanks, Tony! A lot of people are giving me flack about it, but I don't think movies and TV shows are 'mission critical.' If this was for work and had data that was actually 'important,' then I would probably run RAID 5.

    • @tonyvalenti6614
      @tonyvalenti6614 Před rokem +3

      @@TechnoDad You bet! Understood and agree. Again, non critical data is fine for JBOD. Worst thing is your time and effort to recover from a crash. But since it’s static data and you have a backup at least you don’t have to re-rip your DVD’s. 👍🏻

    • @tonyvalenti6614
      @tonyvalenti6614 Před 9 měsíci

      @@andrebradley1924 Understood, and definitely not as valuable as your photos or documents, but unless you have a backup digital copy of all your media, restoring drives and copying files over will take a lot of time. If you don’t have copies and have to re-rip your media, your really in for a lot of work and down time. Might have been better to have a 4 bay NAS or larger drives with RAID 1 or less media. But, again the risk is yours to take. It’s just a beat practice option.
      Personally, I’d get a four bay, pit two mirrored drives in it and expand as you media needs grow using SHR.

      What I was thinking too. And if not, go with Basic and have multiple volumes instead. JBOD is basically the worst option as if one goes down, you lose everything on every drive (if using spanned volumes)

    Great summary TechoDad. But JBOD is way too risky for me. I don't have as much ripped to my 2x 10TB drives in my NAS but still. I do backup my blurays anf music offline to another drive and that gets up to the cloud as well but RAID5 is much faster. Your time is valuable if you ever have a failed drive which WILL happen not if but when.

    Disable the default admin and guest accounts and create custom ones using a different login name instead of "admin" or "guest" .... Add custom firewall rules to better protect yourself from getting hacked too. Personally I have mine set up where only specific IP addresses or domain names can access my NAS from the Internet. If you are just accessing the NAS locally, then you don't need to worry about this as much.
    I have 2 Synology NAS'es. I run Raid 1 for my critical important data (with multiple other encrypted backups).... and Raid 5 for multimedia (vids, pics, etc.) data. I don't want to rip DVDs/CDs again if I loose my multimedia data and having 1 drive redundancy (Raid 5) is a good balance between space/availability for this type of data. Having a 10Gbit connection to my NAS is also a game changer in how fast you can transfer huge amount of data. I would only use JBOD as secondary/tertiary backups instead of my main one though. My minimum is Raid 5.

Is it best to hard wire the connection from the NAS to the media streamer device or does the wireless work ok. I obviousely now have a wireless router for internet connection and although I have a roku box connected to my denon receiver then to the OLED tv....I do stream directly from a couple of services on my tv rather than thru the roku box. I assume that the NAS might stream just as well with the wireless setup? I am very new at this...but will giving this a shot in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again...great video.

    Great Job TD, very thought out. I did the exact same thing with my setup 2 years ago when my original WD NAS power supply failed and I lost most of my DVD rips from my Plex server. I bought another WD NAS and had to re-rip most of my movies. This time I setup raid-5 redundancy with 4-12TB drives, bought a QNAP NAS and have that setup to TV Shows and music backup. I also bought a ZIDOO Z10-PRO and a 16TB drive for all 4k movie rips. I eventually replaced the Zidoo Z10-Pro with a Zappiti NEO and moved that drive over to it without issues. Once all of this was done I bought a 20TB Ext drive to use as backup cold storage for all of my movie rips. That way if a drive dies I will always have my movies. So all of my movie disk are stored away in several large totes. I should invest in a UPS for my NAS but since my computer and NAS drives are sitting in my dedicated Theater room the UPS noise would interrupt movie watching.

The Zappiti mediaplayer works perfectly well, but the Zidoo player has a big stuttering issue in playing the large ISO and MKV files from the Zappiti NAS. Now I can use my Synology to play the files from, but that is not what I am intended to do, for all the movie files are stored on the Zappiti NAS. I tried the wifi and wired connection as well, but just can't solve the problem. Some of them you can upgrade the RAM and add an NVME for caching. However I find those options to be too constrained. Building an UnRAID server gives you a lot of flexibility and the ability to use different size drives and still add drives later for redundancy and not have to wipe and reconfigure the setup. Adding a 10gb fiber card to the server and one to the computer you rip on to transfer your media onto will greatly increase transfer speeds. It takes less than 30 seconds to transfer 80gb’s

However, my Drobo's ( 5 bay each) work flawlessly and can handle 20TB drives. I'm using ( 3x4TB, and 2x12TB ) and (3x18TB and 2x 12TB ). The 5N2 with the 18's is 84% full with Raid 5. UHD's are space killers. I also have a Zapitti Neo and a Zidoo Pro 1000Z, and still use Plex. Having a NAS is almost essential, but it is way easier getting one before your data get's too large. Internal and external harddrives are the same. They come in either the 2,5" SSD format, or the traditional 3,5" HDD format.
      You can just take apart the external enclosures (they will probably break), and unmount the harddrives. If the internal HDD is in SSD size, you can buy bays to put an SSD into a 3,5" format.
      Only downside to these drives in external enclosures, is that they are usually very slow, and has little to no ram cache. The latter really doesn't matter, if you're only Storing large files.
