There is so much to unpack in this video and so much useful information in the description. This video deserves an Oscar for Technical Achievement.
Lol, thank you Tristan!
I have watched this several times while trying to set things up for the new Zappiti I will be buying. Wish I would have paid closer attention as I purchased the whole DVDFab instead of just the two programs that I needed.
Fantastic video! I learnt some of these lessons the hard way when ripping my DVDs and Blu rays about 600 of them two or three years ago. I stopped at 4k UHD because I only had one disc, Dunkirk, and at the time you had to have the right UHD drive plus know a guy that could give you a code for each particular movie and I wasn't prepared to deal with that nonsense. Now I've got about 25 UHD's I might get back into it. Plus I'm jealous of that 3D Oled TV, absolutely love the 3D format. With 3d rips for Plex it does work however it's more hassle than its worth with the menus being all screwed up and the tv not auto recognising 3d content from Plex, so I just avoid guess that's another plus point to the premium Zappitti player.
I fully recommend going with Alex, very fast, friendly and knowledgeable. He handles the warranty as well. I got my drive a few weeks ago and running strong.
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks Jerry!
Is the drive I'd have to get internal only, or external only, or is it either/or? Also for the sake of asking, what OSs are supported? Just Mac and Windows, or if I picked up Linux would it work there too?
@@alexcoluzzi I want to see about getting a drive, what's your e-mail to contact you?
Awesome walk through. Never heard of Zappiti. Nice hardware. Alex Coluzzi was top notch and very honest. Great drive and saved me a lot of work. Highly recommended.
You're welcome and thank you for sharing your experience!
Do you know when the new one is coming out?
Thank you.
made it 8 min 6 seconds into the video before I bought the Cadilac from Alex, and have been backing up my movies since yesterday! Like a glove!
Nice! I’m still ripping stuff and ordering more movies. Lol!!
Enjoy it sir! Thank you.
Whats the email to buy one
Thanks Techno Dad. Alex set me up with a great disc drive and was super helpful.
Nice!
Thanks Jeff!
I'm going to buy a Zappiti and I've search for a video like this without any good results. Will definitely save/bookmark this video to use later when I've bought the Zappiti. BIG thanks for this video VERY useful and informative. Really great!
No problem!!

I've so been waiting for this how to
Right on!!!
I own over 700 blu-ray plus 200 UHD discs. I got a lot of ripping to do.
Thanks for another great tutorial on ripping disc Techno Dad!
You’re welcome David! I just bought a whole bunch so my PS will be busy this holiday season!!
me too, 1200 blu-rays, 110 4k and 100 HD DVD (I know haha). That's a LOT of hard drive space, and what about backing all that up? Don't want to have to rip everything again. I do have all my titles ripped, but transcoded to mp4 to save space. I use them on tablets and flash drives when traveling. I do have everything backed up to 2nd drive. If I kept every thing 1:1 rip i would need dozens of TBs of space. When I want the best experience in my theater I simply use the original disc.
Perfect no BS tutorial.
The great irony: Because I knew I would have to revisit this video, I ripped and saved it for instant reference :P
Thank you, Jack!!!
Great video! Just had my drives and Zappiti show up. Looking forward to getting started.
Nice!!

Great thorough tutorial Channa! If I decide to do some ripping, I will follow this closely. We have 400+ 4K discs alone. About 600 hours I’d ripping just for our 4K! Have an awesome day man!
Glad you liked it!

Thank you so much! Welcome!
Thanks for this! I'm only now learning more about Dolby Vision. Would be very interested to know where you heard about the next generation of Zappiti players and what they will and won't support. Tristan Jones do you still need help?
Very well done TD. I’m going to have to watch that a few times. This was very helpful as I realized a few things I have been doing wrong. Any thoughts if DV support will be a firmware update or is that a hardware update? It’s crazy how the oppo was so far ahead of its time & yet, is the best player out there.
Hello Brandon, Glad you liked it! The Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support will be on the new versions, so I would wait until next year.
The manufacture says that DV will have to be a hardware update. Not a software update.

Excellent video thanks
Hi Techno Dad,
I’ve watched your 4K “NAS” videos, including this one, many times over to ensure that I’m following your instructions to the letter and have had MAGNIFICENT success.
I found Billy (great guy) and was able to have my ASUS drive’s firmware flashed remotely.
I was able to use MakeMV to rip my purchased UHD disc to my personal hard drive flawlessly.
The question I have is related to ripping the disc as a BDMV as you did in this video.
I only see the option for outputting the file a .mkv.
How do I rip as .iso or BDMV using only MakeMKV?
Thanks so much for your content, you are THE MAN!
Miss my C6 and the 3D watching! Wanted to watch Polar Express in 3D...
It’s gonna be a sad day when I have to replace mine.
@@DasTechGuy I have a 65G6V (was 8000 at retail price) one of the best and last 3D TV ever made, how much you think it can worth today?
@@carminedepaola8018 Tough to say... OLED inherently degrades over time and is ever as bright as the first day it was bought and used. Despite that, and the lack of Dolby Vision support at frame rates above 30 fps, you have a great integrated sound bar and 3D support along with OLED just being a great viewing experience in general. Not sure if LG's White Glove will still be available for a display that is 4 / 5 years old now but that was something I always brought up to folks looking at the G6 over the E6, C6, & B6 models at that time. If you found the right buyer you could probably still make anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 or so on the lower end. I certainly doubt you'd be able to get back up to original retail value sadly though.
@@DasTechGuy Interesting. Do you think the G6 has better OLED brightness longevity than the cheaper LG oleds?
@@farouttech4275 No, not at all. LG's older OLED models all used the same organic display layer. They would all inherently degrade the same over time. However, the larger the display, the quicker you'd begin to notice that change, slow as that change might be over time and use. Now that LG's 2021 OLEDs are splitting their models between a base organic display layer and an organic EVO Display layer on the higher models it will be interesting to watch if there is a difference in the levels of fading degradation between the models. Though there are now rumors circulating that all of the LG's 2021 models have the same EVO panel but that the system on a chip that runs each model level of LG's 2021 OLEDs has different instructions on how to use the new panel or even just treat it as a normal panel.
Great video bro👍🏽👊🏽
Thank you!
Super cool video🌍🇩🇰👍🏻 Thanks man ⭐️
Thanks for watching!!
I have used MKV files for a long time. Is there an advantage to using M2TS?
👀
I used to use M2TS passthrough all the time since it is the native format on Blu-Ray discs and more players could play M2TS than MKV. I have recently switched to MKV passthrough though, so that I get chapter marks, and the files are slightly smaller, and most players have been updated over the years to support MKV.
Nope, most people use mkv and the application MakeMKV to rip them.

Hi Techno Dad. I picked up the UHD Pro after watching your Zappiti video. Thanks the review! What drive do you recommend for 4k ripping?
I like ISO more, can you make a tutorial for that?
It’s pretty easy, maybe next week.
What is it you like about ISO files vs MKV or MP4? Just curious.
@@stevejeffery4857 you get all the options. Nothing gets thrown out.
Plex has a support for 3d
Nice!
Can't thank you enough 👏
Dude you are legit!!!!
Thank you!
Great video techno dad! When ripping tv show blu rays, do you recommend M2TS or bdmv?
Hi Troy! I would go with BDMV folders as I have a device that will play them. You could rip each show to MKV or M2TS though. It all depends.
2nd the AnyDVD with CloneBD, but on occasion use MakeMKV...
The Zapitti NAS actually uses AnyDVD and MakeMKV but with full menu support, per Raphael (Zapitti Dev in France).
I for one don't want full menu support, and prefer movie only in support of saving HDD space.
Very good write up that was straight to the point. Well done!
Thank you! Yes, I am familiar with Raphael, I spoke with him at great length when I first got the Zappiti.
Techno dad the man
Hi Channa! Fantastic tutorial as always, it helped a lot! I am having trouble with the subtitle ripping. If I choose for example in Stargate Atlantis and Grimm to rip also the forced subtitles, then at playback it doesn't show any subtitles regardless that in the list I could choose even 2 english subtitle track. I suppose this is because it probably doesn't have any forced subtitle at all on the original disc? Which means I have to know if the movie/series has forced subtitle at all and choose accordingly before ripping? How can I find this out? Thanks, Gabor
you da man TD
Thank you view52!!!
Hahah you saw how many people asked after your last video. Nice work bro
Yeah, basically...
Great video, have been ripping discs for years but 4k uhd really put that on hold since the drives that I own windows wouldn't detect the discs.
Yeah, you need a drive from Alex, his email is in the video description. Those will work on PC and Mac. The computers will see the 4K disc.
Thx for this! I haven’t ripped in about 10 years. I’m assuming rip lock is still a problem? Are there any optical drives that don’t need to be flashed? I used to use imgburn(Mac) and anydvd(win) and it seemed to work well. Do you still have to hunt through fake playlists w/4k? Would like to just go iso/1:1 and stream my files w/DV & atmos support.
When this generation of drives we're using was first released all 2016 and 2017 models were shipped with firmware that exposed the "backdoor" that is used to bypass copy protection and thus did not have to be "flashed".
Sometime in 2018 they released firmware that closed this loophole and thus the flashing did begin.
Being somewhat of a purist myself back then I made it mission to track down as many "factory original" (drives with the "backdoor" firmware installed) drives still in existence and for sale.
Thanks to stores like Fry's Electronics who pride themselves on stocking last year's and the year's before builds of components I cleaned up lol. I was able to find and liberate around 850 factory original drives but eventually I too had to start flashing drives.
It was cool while it lasted. A total nerd scavenger hunt as I either visited or called every fry's location in the country and had them scour their stores looking for the magical date codes on every single ASUS and LG blu ray drive they had in stock. They were always more than happy to send as many as I wanted from all across the country, store to store inventory transfer in one of their fleet of Fry's trucks. Destination Palo Alto store 3. R.I.P. Fry's Electronics!
Good info
Glad it was helpful!
A quick tip I found that you didn't mention, When ripping a blu-ray "movie only" (Make MKV) I tick all english Subtitles however I deselect any "forced subtitles" this way I still have the choice of turning "on or off" subtitles, when needed during the movie. 🎬
Great idea!!
Thanks for the video. Is the Zappiti going to be a Firmware update for Dolby Vision, or you have to get the new one? Been thinking about getting the Zappiti, but wanted the Dolby Vision built in.
Wait until the next one for DV support.
Just a quick question : Why do you "prefer" M2TS pass through using DVDFAB vs Make MKV (movie only) option ??
I'm only asking as I'm fairly new to blu-ray movie to file ripping, i just purchased a Zappiti ONE 4K Media Player, so im currently ripping blu-ray "main movie only" to MKV files, ready for the Zappiti when it arrives. 😊👌👍
Hey Techno Dad! I'm not sure I understand correctly. If I rip my Blu-rays and 4K Blu-ray to an M2TS Passthrough file, it doesn't keep the Dolby Vision AND/OR HDR10+ layers in it (because some 4k Blu-ray comes with both formats i.e: Hobbs & Shaw)? Does it keep the chapters too so I can skip through the movie or is that only available with a BDMV folder? Thank you for your informations!
Thank you! I stopped ripping (using MakeMKV) my UHD movies cause Plex didn't support Dolby Vision. Now I gotta see about my Oppo 203 player and network share drives, always just used discs on that to play. Hopefully Plex supports this in the near future.
You don't even have to share files on the network you can plug an external hard drive right into one of the Oppos USB 3.0 ports and watch your discs backed up into BDMV folders like that. Very few devices support BDMV folders, but Oppo does :)
Happy New Year. Quick question. Does dvdfab also have BDMV=Dolby Vision function or can that only by done with MakeMKV? Thanks in advance
NOICE!
Great video again TD really enjoy your tips and help. I have close to 10,000 DVD/Blu-Ray's & 300 4K discs what do you recommend? Can plex support atmos and doby vision off of a computer?
Asking for a friend. Thanks in advance. Keep up the amazing videos
Hi and welcome to the channel, Gabriel!! I've been hearing the lastest version of MakeMKV and PLEX on the Shield TV Pro will support 4K DV & DA. I haven't checked that yet, thoguh.
Great information, but I do have a question. Have you run into issues with Sight Impaired sound overlay? It rips with movie and plays on all PC players. Does fine on Plex. Any suggestions?
I love using VLC media player on my android with screen-off mode. Been wanting to listen to my disc collection in the background while I do other things. Thanks for making this video. 🤘
Love your channel.
I am confused on what a BDMV
Folder is and how you create it.
Thanks for your help.
Hi! That’s the folder that holds all the information on a Blu Ray disc. The backup method on MakeMKV is easy enough. Just remember to check the decrypt box when you do.
Very good information. When ripping 4k discs, do you find that the drive must be plugged into a USB 3 port or the rip will eventually fail? Also, I have to clean the discs very thoroughly with alcohol to get them to rip and then they will sometimes fail and have to be reclined and ripped again. I am using the LG drive Alex sells but it still can be an arduous task sometimes to get a 4k ripped. Any ideas? Thanks Benny
@Sathya J It's not a warranty issue it's one of the details to be aware of. 4K discs should be cleaned before you attempt to back them up and even then it's not guaranteed that every single one can be back up. Visit the makemkv message boaard to go over best practices when using these drives.
How do you preserve those DVD and blu ray menu games? Do you know of any cases where some aspects of some media can't be backed up to these systems?
When you make the BDMV backup in Makemkv do you get another large file too? So you have the large ISO/mkv file and the backup file?
I use MakeMKV for my rips and leave them full size for my 4K rips. I'm using a an LG WH16NS60 with Libredrive Firmware.
Nice!
I use DVD fab to rip my blurays as MKVs to my hard drives setup. Doing no compression whatsoever. Sure it takes up space but if you want them untouched then space will be required :)
That sound at 1:36 is like cop sirens in rap songs. I had to minimize your video to find what issue my pc just had. Took me 30 seconds to zero in on it in your video, lol.
Lol!! Sorry!!
Glad a I bought a Kaleidescape strato S. Very expensive but don’t have to deal with the process of ripping files.
Yeah, It's definitely time consuming and that Kaleidescape is super pricey.
Techno Dad. I’m new to your channel. What drive do you rip 4k discs with?
Hi! Email Alex about a 4k compatible drive - alexcoluzzi32@gmail.com
Great video - would an external BD player like this plugged into my desktop (AMD Ryzen 5 / 2600 6-core / GT1030 / 16gb) work in converting BD to MP4 do you think?
thanks
You’re welcome!
Channa D. , Michael from Patreon recommended you. Loved you video, very informative. You made this 12/20, do you have any updates to this since it is now 7/22? I would also like to know how many GB does each disc take up when ripping, I noticed when you did the Saving Private Ryan I saw 90.68 GB listed, can I expect to used roughly this much GB on each rip? If so I would definitely need a few TB drives for my full library. You also mentioned contacting Alex for a drive, what type of drive is it? Thanks for the info keep up the good work.
Hi James! Yes, some discs can get up to 90GB, but that's the entire disc or "disc image." When you rip the movie itself, it could be anywhere from 20 GB - 70 GB. So it all depends. Yes, that's a lot of space. I have 32TB of space for my Zappiti and the 4K friendly drive is something you'll have to order from Alex - alexcoluzzi32@gmail
I've ripped for decades and this was helpful; usually creating a (decrypted) ISO then creating movie files out of the items I've wanted (ie movie, episode etc). One problem I've had in the past was out of order or skipped playback for example Hunger Games Catching Fire. I had to jump through some hoops to get it working but the main concern was I would never have known unless I watch the video throughout. This was about 5ish years ago so things are probably better now. Have you had any playback issues of the rips you have done?
I rip to BDMV using MakeMKV's "full disc backup" feature and have not had issues with playback that were not already known issues. I'm thinking there was something up with Midway when it initially came out.
This has been one issue we all been faceing when ripping movies. Manufacture of the Disc do this to make it harder to rip. You have to either research what file to grab from the disc or do a trial and error to find the right one. This is why Zappiti rips the entire disc you put in. To me that's a lot of extra data. I prefer just to back up the main movie only. I don't need menus or extra's, skipping sound track and CC that I will never use. But there are a few disc's that where a big pain to figure out. Normally if you search on MKV's website you can find the right file to grab. For the price difference I will be happy to deal with the inconvenience.
Just ordered my drive from Alex. Was just curious, what hard disk drives do you prefer for file storage?
Hello Vincent, I am using Seagate Ironwolf drives. They are the designated NAS drives they make and are 7200 RPM. You can pretty much get any size but I have two 16TB drives to keep me busy ripping, LOL! Here's a link to drives - technodad.biz/Drives

whats a good external or internal blu ray drive I can buy to rip my blu rays? what do you guys recommend?
I need something budget priced for both films and cds? What do you recommend?
question, if I rip 4k UHD movies to a NAS pc with MKV- the pc nas will not perform any transcoding, simply hold the movie files - can I watch them without losing bitrate or UHD sound quality from a Nvidia Sheild Pro with PLEX on the Nvidia Shield PRO. ? Also does the NAS host pc have to have a good CPU and RAM to stream more than one 4k UHD movie at at time ?
I just ordered a cheap external blu ray player for my laptop, in the fine print after shipping it says doesn't support blu ray playback alone download blu ray player and use simultaneously. Is the VLC player enough to plug and play for something like that?
Do we need a program like Zappiti to play the files or is it just a physical machine to play them? Wondering because I'm trying to figure out how I would go about playing the files on my TV, Computer and phone. New to all this... My goal is to rip the files to an external drive and plug that drive into my devices and be able to play the movie file right off the external drive.
I’m curious. Is there a way to track a file for a hard to find movie and rip to blu ray? I’m asking because I’m converting my entire dvd library to Blu-ray and often find some movies are very expensive and some aren’t yet available on Blu-ray. I own some hard to find movies on dvd and really want them on Blu-ray format, because of their durability vs regular dvd.
Hi, thanks for your explanation, very informative, is it possible to edit/cut the ripped file? I want to make a shorter version of the movie, thanks again for your time 😊
I don’t think so. At least, not that I know of.
Hi! First of all thank for the great Video!! One question! Does the makemkv tool also support the mkv.mvc pass-through option to rip 3D Bluerays?
Yes
Hi, great video Channa! I used the MKV 3D pass through. However, the movie just looks like a regular movie (2D). It didn’t put it in 3D. Did I do something wrong? I used all the steps you said. Help!
Hi, Thanks a lot for this. M2ST, isn't it only 264 accelerated? MKV comes 265 accelerated, right.
Thank you for the video, very informative. I thought that with Zappiti, there was no need for ripping software, just insert the disk and rip away . I saw another reviewer where he had the zappiti nas ..
With there NAS you will not need extra software. There NAS has it in the NAS. I think you are getting confused with us talking about other solutions besides Zappiti NAS
The Zappiti NAS is what you’re thinking of and it’s like $3,500 or something
Hi that's a hell of a video about ripping. For 3D blu-ray why would you choose 3D MKV over a folder backup with MakeMKV ?
Hi! Space is the reason. If I rip to BDMV all the time, I'll be using up more space. M2TS and MKV will be just the movie file and less space taken up on your HDD.
I live outside the USA. So can you make a video about "Friendly BLUERAY Drive". Like, which one to buy and how to make it work for ripping.??
Hello quick question does this work with DVDS from like other country’s that are region locked like from Japan and South America etc?
They will still have zone restrictions.
Dear sir please do one video on third method - How to backup full 4k bluray disc
Do the bd rip programs do DVDs too or would I have to get the dvd programs too? What about downscaling (4k down to say 1080p, for file size friendliness).
At the moment I'm not concerned with 4k and IMAX and Dolby and such, just looking for the movie with audio. Would makeMKV be better for me or should I look up the other program.
I'd still have to get a good ripping drive either way I'm sure.
Hi! I don't think MakeMKV does a downscaling thing. I'm also not sure how other software programs would do.
Great video!! I'm late to the party but I don't see Alex's email address. Is he still assisting?
Thanks for the awesome video! I have various blu-rays and UHDs from all over the world - different zones / regions. Can you recommend a USB player to rip any region blu-ray?
Hi! I haven’t had any experience ripping different region blu rays.
yes, i have multi region discs too...what USB player to use??
Can anyone recommend the best external plug in 4k 3d player to put the disks in?
Hey Techno Dad,
Pretty good video (Overall 👍),
But, I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this (yet), but it looks like you made a [minor] error when using the MKV ripping software.
When “Back Up” 4K (or Blu Ray) movies you must use the “Decrypt Video File” option/check off box (that is, if you wish to remove all of the AACS disk protections). Your video showed this option Un-Checked.
Just an FYI/BTW 😉
How much in size is a ripped 1080p and 4K video files?
👍👍👍
Great video. Can Shield using the VLC app be able to play Dolby Vision files?
Not sure
Thank you for the video. My NAS is full of DVD rips and blurays and I'm looking into getting back into ripping..... but that requires more hard drives and that's actually quite expensive if you want to get a proper NAS solution.
A few questions:
1: You mentioned forcing subtitles. Is this really necessary if you rip to an iso? I much prefer to have the disk as is with all tracks and subtitles and choosing depending on who is watching (my children don't speak English for instance).
2: There used to be software that allowed you to rip a DVD but remove all nonsense that prevented you to access the menu (trailers, FBI Warnings, other stuff that screw over paying customers and does nothing to pirates). Is this still possible?
Thank you again.
1. ISO/BDMV rip it should not be necessary as the entire disc structure is being backed up into the file. Then it's just a matter of choosing what you want shown on playback.
2. That's a great idea. That being said I'm not aware of additional software used to do that.
Is there a way to edit the fully backed up blu ray file on my computer like videos subtitles etc.?
