Slammed, Slow and Good To Go: 1977 Datsun Sunny (VB210)

  • It's not JDM if it's called a 120Y! This Nissan/Datsun Sunny van (station wagon) thing is truly cool. Some coilovers, shortened diff, and other suspension mods aside, this is one tidy survivor. Engine is the A12 four cylinder, and it looks brand new, along with that breathtaking interior. I should point out that there is a fantastic supporting cast of vans and wagons, too. There's a Toyota Carina (TA49V), a Nissan Skyline (VPJR30), a Nissan Sentra (B12), and one of the coolest Crown (MS62) that you'll ever see.

Also thanks for explaining the difference between a Japanese van and wagon! We had similar distinction, but in our case it also meant no rear seats were allowed. So no rear seats and all of a sudden it qualifies as a van and you're allowed to register it on business plates and have cheap tax. Remember the Nissan Sunny GTi-R I featured five years ago? No rear seats and it was on business plates. I still remember freaking out on that when I noticed 😂

The model names are confusing. The green wagon I knew that as the Datsun 120Y station wagon growing up in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. The "Sunny" name was linked to the Nissan HB11. The black boxy wagon referred to as the Sentra at 1:29 was the Sunny HB12 in Zim colloquially known as the "Box Sunny". Sentra was a different slightly more premium model sold separately from the HB12...hella confusing with all these name switches between regions 😄.

Well, that's a van for sure. But, just think of the word 'van' in the context of a passenger vehicle base as a commercial class of vehicle.

  • @joakimhjelm-svennesen8984

Why wasn’t the Toyota Crown and Nissan Sentra not called a van in Japan? And what’s up with the 81 Toyota Carina Van? I thought it was also called a Corolla in Japan. The Sentra was, if I’m not wrong, called a Sunny in Europe. The Sentra IMO looks something between a hatchback and a station wagon or a van. I LOVE the Toyota Carina van and the Nissan Sentra - they look so sleek

Hmm ever since the 160J/Violet entered my sphere (ooh!) these have taken a considerable downgrade in mein eye. Not to say I dislike them (what did they ever do to me anyway?) but these bottom feeder cars...and I know this is borderline sacrilege have less of a place in my world as I my knowledge expands on all the different marques/models in the world. An emphasis on performance and less the garden variety is what I seek to know I've come to realise and should be unashamed about it. This is likely the last idea you want spruiking and will formally shut up on the matter. "Not to discourage, but surely you could spend similar time/money on a more capable car to arrive at a superior result?" Its all subjective...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...etc. You know what I'm getting at though. Dont get me wrong - it wouldnt surprise me if this "commercial vehicle" was worth double what it is now in 5 years time. Datsun/Mazda 1000's all rare, potentially interesting (certainly in original condition) but fall into the same tissuebox-style category and I dont care how many 13B bridgeports you put in them(!)

Hahahaha. When it comes to cars I like, no matter how often I come up with some rule that defines the cars I like, there's always the "Oh, and them!". And, on the topic of garden variety vs "capable" cars. In Japan, it's the low-spec cars that have become the unicorns. For me, as a car spotter, familiarity has bred contempt.
