Slammed, Slow and Good To Go: 1977 Datsun Sunny (VB210)

- It's not JDM if it's called a 120Y! This Nissan/Datsun Sunny van (station wagon) thing is truly cool. Some coilovers, shortened diff, and other suspension mods aside, this is one tidy survivor. Engine is the A12 four cylinder, and it looks brand new, along with that breathtaking interior. I should point out that there is a fantastic supporting cast of vans and wagons, too. There's a Toyota Carina (TA49V), a Nissan Skyline (VPJR30), a Nissan Sentra (B12), and one of the coolest Crown (MS62) that you'll ever see.

nice Daniel keep them coming
:)
whoa sick looking datsun 'van' just simple and a classic look; perfect!
Thanks, man :)
Love the jelly beans, and I think that the steering wheel is a moon-eyes item, thanks dan for the vid as always
Oh, a Mooneyes steering wheel? Interesting. I totally should have googled that. Time was a factor though. Thank you for watching :)
Damn man, you're editing is getting so much better...this is amazing
Thanks, Mark. In lieu of actual talent, I figure I've got to do the reps. :)
I can dig it. One of my uncles had a 1979 B-210...WAGON, in orange. Nowhere near as nice as this.
Great video Dan, thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Joe. And, sorry for getting to your comment so late. (And I'm sure a missed a few in the past.) Anyway, it's always appreciated.
Just like my dads 120y wagon. Love these things
Nice to have that family connection
WOW! LOVE THAT DATSUN WAGON 120Y NEED THAT ONE IN MY COLLECTION!
Matey, I just checked your latest video. Very cool 210 you have.
beautiful beautiful beautiful, finally a 120y on the channel, thanks for showing!
Yes, it's actually rare to see them. But, I did one late last year. Did you see it? czcams.com/video/10wIvM4wbp4/video.html
@@wasabicars yes yes i saw, beautiful car with very good sports engine
Datsun 120Y Wagon in Australia 5 slots look cool on it cheers KC 🇭🇲😎😎👍🇭🇲
Thanks, KC. Side note: I dig wombats :)
Yeah love this thing, almost got a HiFence Car Club vibe going on with the style of mods. Yay for Sunnys :D
Oh! I just googled HiFence Car Club. Far from me. But, far canal. Very nice
cool :). also liking that black b12, they were a popular car to import back in the 90s, but i havent seen one in traffic in years now lol
Thank you. The b12 is quite a rare sight here, too.
Very nice, clean, almost stock but not too stock car Daniel!
Also thanks for explaining the difference between a Japanese van and wagon! We had similar distinction, but in our case it also meant no rear seats were allowed. So no rear seats and all of a sudden it qualifies as a van and you're allowed to register it on business plates and have cheap tax. Remember the Nissan Sunny GTi-R I featured five years ago? No rear seats and it was on business plates. I still remember freaking out on that when I noticed 😂
Hahaha! A GTi-R ‘commercial vehicle’ 😂
@@wasabicars I guess it's true: the Dutch are cheap and try to save every penny if they can 😅
I also have a 120y 2-door van, orange
Love a nice wag..van 👍
Impeccable style
It's as low as it is cool :)
Funny seeing you do a video on this car coz I was just looking at the 120y hashtag on instagram and seen this "Van", Hopefully my 120y sedan will look this good someday :)
Hey. Can I ask you're insta username?

very nice!
Thank you :)
Very nice!
Definitely :)
Awesome van🔥
Haha. Definitely :)
WasabiCars i’ve got 1987 gs136v Toyota Crown Van
Absolutely love that car , Nice and slam I love it and I'm so thankful they put the mirrors on the door and capped the holes in the fenders , I'm not sure but that car may have come from the factory with leaf springs Springs in the back , Did you catch a glimpse of that 59 Chevy 2 door 💪
Yeah, the mirrors thing... No driver's side mirror. Odd. And the owner did say he worked on the leaf suspension, but I'm not sure at which point. It's changed a lot. He said he'd shortened the diff, and then airbags. Oops, the 59 I may have overlooked. :(
@@wasabicars Thank you Daniel take care
Beast 👌🏾
:)
Nice hugh jarss!!
Hahahaha! A classic :)
Beautiful "van" ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, man :)
Wow! Cali plates in Japan! And they're even the right ones. When that car was new in California, it would have gotten the blue and yellow plates. And, my 1980 210 had an A12 in it, good for all of 56 hp, I think.
Yeah, those plates take me back to so many TV shows. Hart to Hart, Remington Steele, Simon & Simon... Lol. I don't know if they all had California plates. Just that era
@@wasabicars And then, you can go back even further to the old black and yellow plates from the 60s.
that orange motorbike was cool looking
Oh, yeah. Like a sled almost. Funky
Hugh Jass.. Bonus points for random Simpsons reference there 😂
Been a long time since I've seen one in Aus in any condition, coupes are still around but rare but sedans and wagons ended up mostly being parts donors for coupes.
Really? Having been away for.. 19 years, I really don't know what the deal is. I did see a couple of sedans during my last couple visits. But, yeah. Rare
@@wasabicars Probably seen 3 120Y's in the last 10 years 2 coupes and 1 sedan, last wagon I saw was maybe 15 years ago.
@@wasabicars Most of them would have got 8 on the Rusty multiplier on the WANG back in the 90's so mostly disappeared into nothing now....
Awesome err..... 120Y estate. 12" steelies and wheel trims would do it for me!
Estate! Lol. But, when the stork delivered this baby to its new family back in 1977, it was a van. :) But, and I know you know, if 'Estate' was written on the brochure, that's what I'd call it.
Side note. I actually cringe when I talk about 'van' because I know regulars get it. It's always that vocal newcomer who hears me say it then instantly type "It's not a van, it's a..." To stop myself yelling at them, I bang on about 'van', and hate myself.
My folks in Belize call a people carrier a van. It amuses me when they say we're going somewhere in the van. I cart the tools of my trade around in a van. But yes I know what you mean and just like to jest.
I've been saying for awhile that old ansen sprints would look good on my wagon.
I would love more info on the rack on the crown though. Because I really want a functional rack for my wagon. I need to remove mine seal it up, then get a gutter mount rack for it.
Next time I speak to the Crown owner I’ll get the info 👍
mantab jaya
Thick profile rubber works so well sometimes.
I'm a fan :)
What is the name of the rims? Is it 13",and how did they get the back wheels to fit inside the frame of the car without sticking out?
Nice I got a bluebird wagon.
Thank you. I actually just watched a video on your channel of the green station wagon. I was surprised to see it had an L series engine. Cool
@@wasabicars thank you man I appreciate it,yes she got a four forward l18s.
proper family car, if wife says i need a SUV nah you re getting a wagon, a slammed one
Hahahaha
The model names are confusing. The green wagon I knew that as the Datsun 120Y station wagon growing up in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. The "Sunny" name was linked to the Nissan HB11. The black boxy wagon referred to as the Sentra at 1:29 was the Sunny HB12 in Zim colloquially known as the "Box Sunny". Sentra was a different slightly more premium model sold separately from the HB12...hella confusing with all these name switches between regions 😄.
自家用 JIKAYOU(Personal use) means you only use it for your own business and not paid for carrying freights. Not only those small cars for storekeepers but school buses are also categorized to "personal use".
Awesome. Thank you for that information
More “vans” please!!!
Agreed! Very cool looking
Hey, and you sent a dm to me on Insta, right? Yeah, there was a bunch of reasons as to why I didn't shoot enough footage. It's just no use going over it. But, of course I'll get more footage if I'm able. It's not exactly fun trying to make a 5 minute video with 2 minutes of footage. Lol
B12 Nissan California
Thanks for the info. We never got them in Australia.
Looking for something rare , there’s a dude out of Henderson,NV that has a 1981 Datsun 510(A10) with 30 k original miles fully stock , with Z20 turbo ,.
I hope you find something. Your userid seems like a good omen :)
I would trade my 510 for the sunny wagon because like it ,Lol!
Thanks, Johnny. Yeah, she's a pretty cool unit.
So what do the Japanese call (what we would call) a van ?
Well, that's a van for sure. But, just think of the word 'van' in the context of a passenger vehicle base as a commercial class of vehicle.
Why wasn’t the Toyota Crown and Nissan Sentra not called a van in Japan? And what’s up with the 81 Toyota Carina Van? I thought it was also called a Corolla in Japan. The Sentra was, if I’m not wrong, called a Sunny in Europe. The Sentra IMO looks something between a hatchback and a station wagon or a van. I LOVE the Toyota Carina van and the Nissan Sentra - they look so sleek
Hi Joakim. I’m sorry, I thought I explained in the video that the 400 series number plates represented the commercial vehicle. The Crown and the Senta both had 500 series number plates. That means they were passenger vehicles. As for the Carina, definitely a Carina. The video of it. czcams.com/video/DUXRY3uFbj4/video.html
WasabiCars ah I must have missed the 500 part of the number plates. Yes you did explain the 400 part of the number plates:-)
Datsun 120 Y
Not in Japan
Mexico, central america and sud america was datsun whit b12 engine.
CALI PLATES??
Lol. Yes. I guess Japanese plates on a car in the US at a car show would be cool, so the opposite is cool here
🔥🔥😷😻😻
Thank you :)
B210Station wagon Not C20van lol.
Hey, James. I promise you that I'm not making this up. The car is a VB210, and the V stands for... "van". It quite simply doesn't matter how the word van is used in your country. In Japan... this car... is a サニーバン (Sunny Van). And, as for "C20van", I have no clue what you're referring to
@@wasabicars hey oh true that. is VB210 in Japan & Aussie? In NZ they just B210 registered as station wagon or with no backseats they also can be commercial vehicle also. C20 is 81 Datsun Vanette come out with factory powered A15 motor. short & long wheel based models where optional, now days becoming rare as. I am still learning about 210s lately as I only have owned, built & driven B110 models from coupe,2 door station wagon & 4door sedan deluxe in the Datsun range.
Lol, that is slow. What's a 'donk'?, says the y generation. Hi Dan, check out the Datsun Sunny b110 1200 coupe on Djkidboy
Donk, in Australia, or back-in-the-day Australia, means engine. :) And, 'Djkidboy', I'll check it out now
Hmm ever since the 160J/Violet entered my sphere (ooh!) these have taken a considerable downgrade in mein eye. Not to say I dislike them (what did they ever do to me anyway?) but these bottom feeder cars...and I know this is borderline sacrilege have less of a place in my world as I my knowledge expands on all the different marques/models in the world. An emphasis on performance and less the garden variety is what I seek to know I've come to realise and should be unashamed about it. This is likely the last idea you want spruiking and will formally shut up on the matter. "Not to discourage, but surely you could spend similar time/money on a more capable car to arrive at a superior result?" Its all subjective...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...etc. You know what I'm getting at though. Dont get me wrong - it wouldnt surprise me if this "commercial vehicle" was worth double what it is now in 5 years time. Datsun/Mazda 1000's all rare, potentially interesting (certainly in original condition) but fall into the same tissuebox-style category and I dont care how many 13B bridgeports you put in them(!)
Wait a minute - I have a deep love of KE20/25 Corolla's though. I retract everything! Hope to get one before its too late. My 73 GB Galant is headed for the tip though I've decided. Onward.
Hahahaha. When it comes to cars I like, no matter how often I come up with some rule that defines the cars I like, there's always the "Oh, and them!". And, on the topic of garden variety vs "capable" cars. In Japan, it's the low-spec cars that have become the unicorns. For me, as a car spotter, familiarity has bred contempt.
@@wasabicars With you brother. Hey I have all the notifications on yet I did not recieve anything in my little box to tell me you replied. All seems a bit dodgy if you ask me - solid with some channels and sketchy on others. I assume if I select "All" on the Bell it is literally that...I like this platform less and less with time!
