That lancer is legit …it’s the rarer one with the L taillights…prized and were seldom sold used back in the philippines. Back in the 80s, we had a same period toyot corolla SR with a racing tuned 2t engine, already fast, but we got beaten real bad by this L type lancer…because it was a lot lighter.
HBD! If that kicks off the show, I can't wait for the rest! That said that same thing happens here in the US. I asked a guy to actually close his hood for a shot. It was near the end of the show and he refused. I walked away and was taking shots of a more amenable car owner who recognized me from a previous show and noted I was likely there for a publication. It was enjoyable to see out of the corner of my eye the previous rude owner take notice and scramble to catch my attention but I moved on. I've always been of mind, if your not at a car show to share and be social, keep it in the garage, who needs ya.
Happy Birthday D o'G. Here in the states (midwest) I went to a local car show night with all types of cars. I saw a 92 Toyota Celica convertible. I had several Celica's over the years and introduced myself. We got to talking about our appreciation for cars. He was the original owner and I could tell is was very proud of his car and liked to talk about events in his life with this car. And I have been at other shows were some owners probably should have stayed at home with their sour attitude.
Happy birthday again Those Japanese are a strange bunch To us that is not them they understand perfectly Twin su carbys so more cars from this show 😍😍👍👍🥳🥳
Beautiful car. And a great shout out to the 142 Volvo. Forgot about that car on this channel. I appreciate dealing with cultural differences to share this with us. The hobby is getting in a bad way, we need to share this with ANYONE who has even a slight interest, while we can... Thanks for sharing Dan, great video as always.
This car had 4 Cibie super Oscar lights on the front, 2 above and 2 below the bumper. It was a works supported car and they shipped a ton of spares to Australia for the event. He had 56 tires/rims. It had a spring sleeved exhaust which meant under high revs the pipe opened up giving more power. I was part of the Mitsubishi Car Owners club back then and we did some sup[port work for the team. It certainly didn't have those fender mirrors on the front as they would have gone in no time.
Nice car, this one i see quite often. Not the two door but four door model. In fact i spotted one yesterday. I really like your presentation in the videos. The technicalities brands of the Carbs, lamps etc. Japanese Culture ohh Bhoy. 😁 Cheers
Daniel, Birthday Greetings. This model was marketed in Australia as a Chrysler Valiant Lancer with a few cosmetic changes. The rear lights were slightly different and across the back panel was a metal gray horizontally fluted plastic panel. I bought one new from a local Chrysler dealership in a very light blue color, might have been called "diamond white"..
I've heard that kind of thing in Japan is refered to "reading the air." I remember when these were sold in the US as a Dodge Colt (I think when they were sold by Mitsu they were still called Colts). Happy Brithday, Daniel and I got my T shirt. Many thanks!
Thanks, Jason. Are there still any of these getting around in Australia? I recall seeing some (even green 2 doors like this one) growing up in Brisbane.
Happy Birthday Daniel Dude !!! lOve your shows . With further communication; perhaps can handle owners reservation to lift the hood. Did you explain you're from Australia; long way... Have a youtube channel ; many adoring admirers of these cars; etc etc. He and the car are celebrities..... Good luck :)
Don't know if the owner has changed them or you misidentified them Dan, but those are HS4 SU carbs and not side draft Strombergs. Trust me they used both on British cars, particularly Triumphs. Still a very cool car regardless and I have seen photos of the real one (and other cars in the Southern Cross Rally) in magazines from the era.
Ah, the engine spec I rattled off where of the base car at release, not this car. Having said that, I wouldn’t know which is which anyway 😅 Appreciate the info of course 😊
The original car would have side draught Aisan carburettors which were fitted OEM to all Japanese performance cars and obviously were a copy of SU's as fitted to this car. I was a friend of John Bryson and Barry Field, both navigators for the Australian Mitsubishi team run by Doug Stewart using Mitsubishi Colts and Bryson's story of an end for end roll out of a culvert at top speed on tarmac was hilarious as was Colin Bond's story of not being able to outrun a Dodge paper truck at Dignam's Creek in the Snowy Mountains Rally.
@@duster8100The SU copies were actually made by Hitachi. There were two varieties. The early units which were visually identical to the HS series. Later versions used a squared off top over the piston. Usually seen on Datsun/Nissans , definitely not Toyotas. I’ve never seen them on a Mitsubishi/ Colts. Later GSRs used a pair of twin downdraft carbs.
They are mega rare. I've seen just two in Japan the last 20 years: they are rare. I didn't get much of a chance to get good looks at them either. Yes, hopefully one day soon
Well, I almost feel the same way. This one is literally the only one I've gotten to get a good look at in 20 years in japan. (There was a boring-arse white 1400 sedan at Mitsubishi's museum, but that doesn't count)
So how did you convince him to open the hood (bonnet)? It looks like you were having a fairly nice chat at that point so you must have smoothed things over pretty quick. Or perhaps I'm reading it wrong and he was doing it begrudgingly and muttering under his breath. And happy birthday!
I just kept insisting, and when on to explain that this was the only one I'd seen in 20 years besides the 1400 sedan in Mitsubishi's own museum. From that, he could see I was genuine. Thanks for the birthday wishes.
@@wasabicars Happy Birthday, Wishing you a wonderful day and all the most amazing things on your Big Day!. If you have any chance come to Bangkok Thailand, please let me know. I am very welcome to visit my private cars collection at my home garage.
The whole "no you can't look at the engine" thing is a bit odd. But as you say each to their own. I know the Japanese look at our 0.05 alcohol while driving laws as stupid. I have to agree with them if I'm honest. Anyway happy birthday.
Ok, don’t get me wrong here, because I think you’re an awesome guy. Love you, adore you, wanna be you..... BUT. Taking pictures of cars on a show or at a meeting really isn’t carspotting. That’s like a birdspotter going to a zoo and spotting something.
Fair enough, Rob. The setting is indeed different. Lol. But, my process for documenting cars, and my desire that no-one be present, and my enjoyment at "spotting" cars, is exactly the same. I do hear what you're saying though, because of something that happened the other week. Some guy was in town from Osaka and he hit me up to do some... car spotting. Some background info: in Japanese they use the term "kusa hero"; "kusa" is grass, "hero" is the English word. You can probably picture a "Kusa hero", i.e. a rusting GT Skyline surrounded by overgrown grass. Well, this guy only wanted to take photos of cars where there was overgrown grass. Not just any old cars, not just old rusty cars, but old/rusty cars in overgrown grass. Anyway, that spun me out.
@@wasabicars Ha, that’s a good one. If someone wants to grass hero in my country (Netherlands) then it isn’t car related for sure! :D But yeah, finding rusty cars in grass.... Super cool! But very challenging I think. I like the guy though. :P Greetings, Carsrob

Dude he probably just didn't want to show off the totally stock shitbox engine, the purpose of the car is a replica from the outisde.. the engine isn't a race engine replica. That's probably all he was getting at. Why would anyone want to see a shitty old stock engine when you can see the great job he did replicating the exterior?
