- In this week’s Lanzarote news we talk about the damage caused by the super strong winds earlier in the week, actor James Nesbitt and Harry Kane’s mum on the island, Jet2holidays making staff redundant, the protest planned for 20th April and much more.
The Lanzarote news is brought to you every week by Mike CJ, from Lanzarote Information, which was established in 2008 and is the island’s largest English language publication.

As a regular visitor and Lanzarote lover..this is a great channel..thank you for your efforts 👍👍👍
Thanks for the update Mike. What a shame that Jet2 are stopping the In Resort Check In. We used the service several times and it took all of the stress out of getting through the airport on our return 🙁
Thank you for your video and so much sensible information at last.
Great news update & very informative, thanks so much! I've been enjoying your other vlogs too 😀
Love the background, the best so far. Oh I nearly forgot, another very informative video. Thanks. We’ll be on the island on Tuesday for a month, can’t wait!!
Good morning Mike, thank you for your lanzarote news video. I have been a frequent visitor with my wife to lanzarote for the last few years , we love lanzo as we call it for its unique geography its wonderful food and the friendly local inhabitants and of course its weather. Like you I have been outraged by the outlandish reports in the British press saying we are not welcome in the Canaries .
Regards Chris uk.
Love the format very informative Thank you Val
toller Kanal 👍vielen Dank 🇩🇪
Thanks for another informative video 👍🏻
Morning Mike great update looking forward to Monday as we are flying in to the sun
Thank you for this very informative video!
Great vids Mike! Keep them coming! We’ll be there in Costa Teguise mid June so love watching your updates. 👍🏻x
Thank you! Will do!
Great video Mike, sorry to hear that Jet 2 are getting rid of the service of check in which as you said was great for everyone, keep up the good work
I noticed on Friday morning quite a heavy fog between around 7am and 10am and that appeared to impede early flights to and from the island. Having been visiting Lanzarote for 15 years I’ve never noticed this before, was it another rarity like the very strong winds we saw earlier in the week?
Yes, if you check social media, there were loads of photos posted of the sea fog. Very unusual here - I think we may have seen it only once or twice in the last 25 years.
@@LanzaroteInformation thanks Mike, really like this new format and the engagement. What a week it was for anomalies in the weather!
Thank you for the information
Very interesting👍
Thank you again Mike for your latest update… We often wonder if there is any scope of works for the huge amount of empty half built buildings in and around Costa Teguise, out by the Santa Rosa Hotel and beyond, and we are sure there must be many more of these sites around the island… local government should step in and complete these buildings for local residents….makes sense 🤷🏼♂️
Yes, it would make sense, but until a court authorises that the land and buildings can be taken over, it can't happen.
Hi Mike used to be a keen tent camper a few few years ago used to camp in gran canaria is it still possible in lanzarote.
Hi Desmond. The only place you can camp legally here is at the campsite at Papagayo, which is open during the summer.
Not sure you will know the answer to this but I am sure you will know somebody who will. We are Irish passport holders who have lived all working lives in the UK. As Irish citizens we would aspire to retire Lanzarote but how does it work post Brexit accessing health care as our national insurance contributions and taxes have been paid into UK health and Social Security systems? Thanks for any guidance. Glad to see doing the news on You Tube as we missed the old Lanzarote Information Podcasts
The simple answer is as Irish citizens you have the right to live and work here, under freedom of movement rules. I’m not a finance expert but I’m pretty sure you would be able to draw your UK pension while here, as many others do.
I'd pay for the resort check-in. Used it before and it was great.
We said the same thing. I guess the issue is that they don't know if enough people would do the same to cover the costs of the staff and trucks.
Morning a greatvupdate thx
Morning to you too, Ray. It's a lovely sunny, blue sky morning here in Lanzarote.
Whereabouts are you on the island? We are in Playa Blanca, but NO blue sky here!! It’s quite cool … no sun in sight!
@@lindalee830 We're in Haria, so the other end of the island, and we have the most stunning blue sky currently.
Is it the case that one of the points of the demos is the introduction of a tourist tax? To be used to reinvest in the infrastructure that is lacking.
It's not specifically part of protestor's manifesto, which is more generalised - they are asking for a cohesive, sustainable tourism plan for the future. It is an idea that has been kicked around for a few years by one of the political parties, but it has never really gained any traction.

Good morning Mike.
In the past few weeks, there have been reports in various UK newspapers that entry into Spain will require extra documentation from May this year. ie:- Proof that you can support yourself and your family by having £95 /day/person available to you. This could amount to £2660 for a family of 4. Which is unaffordable for most people. I think this is an example of fake news, have you heard anything to this effect.
Regards
Trevor
It's nothing new - the law has been in place for many years. The only situation in which an immigration officer would ask for proof you can support yourself while here is if you don't have a return ticket, or an accommodation booking.
Hi Dave. I contacted them about the in resort check in and they said it was lack of staff but were working on it.😮
I think you commented on the wrong video, Sue.
@@LanzaroteInformation Whoops, should have been Mike and not Dave.😂
@@suelong3273 The Jet2holidays in resort check in service is stopping and the staff currently working on it are being made redundant.
@@LanzaroteInformation We were saying that it must cost a fortune to give this service, so not really surprised.!
Serán conocidos por los ingleses. Como inmigrante ¿hablas español?
Sí, pero hacemos los videos para personas que hablan inglés.
Vale. Cuanto me alegro de que como inmigrante hables castellano. ¡Enhorabuena!
Greed from Jet2
I disagree. I think they’re making a mistake withdrawing from in resort check in. But they’re responding to market forces and the fact they are being undercut consistently. Only time will tell if their strategy is right or wrong, but for sure, it’s not driven by “greed. “
The in resort check in must have been a boon for families with lots of bags, sad to see it gone. Jet 2 are still much slicker at the airport than other tour operators in my experience, plenty of staff there to speed us through both at East Midlands and Lanzarote. Keep up the good work Mike.
