Hi! My name’s Jake from Holiday Extras Travel Guides, and here is our guide to Lanzarote.
Now, before we get cracking here’s some handy info for when you’re planning your trip to the beautiful island of Lanzarote.
Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, a part of Spain just off the coast of Africa. Even late in the year, the temperature rarely drops below the twenties, so it’s great for a bit of winter sun.
It’s nearly 3000km away from the UK. Which means from the airport lounge to the César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, you’re looking at about a 4 hour flight time. The airport was renamed in 2019 to celebrate famous artist César Manrique, his creativity left a huge legacy in Lanzarote; you’ll see his name everywhere. But we’ll talk more about that later.
The island is actually quite small, it never takes more than 40 minutes to drive anywhere. For this reason we actually hired a car to get around the island. Public transport and excursion coaches are available if that’s not your thing, but the car’s definitely the most flexible and hassle-free option.
Ok, now you have the bare essentials about the islands, here is the main event. Our TOP nine things to do in Lanzarote...
Up first at number one is arguably the most famous of all - Timanfaya National Park. It’s a huge protected reserve set in a volcanic mountain range, made up entirely of volcanic soil.
Timanfaya is famous for looking like you’re on another planet. Bubbly, cooled lava as far as the eye can see looks completely alien. The best way to see it all is to hop on one of their coaches. It takes you all around the park’s landscape, and is included in your ticket!
The volcanic activity continues beneath your feet. In fact, you’ll be shown that when you visit. Water is poured into deep holes in the ground that go just 13 meters below. Down there, it’s hot enough to make the water boil instantly, resulting in ...very loud steam geysers!
They actually use this volcanic heat to grill the food in the restaurant, El Diablo. Where else can you say you’ve had lunch cooked by a volcano!? If you’d like to know more about El Diablo, check out our Where to Eat in Lanzarote video.
So, as you can see from my beard - it’s pretty windy! So I would recommend bringing at least a light jacket up here, even if you’re coming in the summer seasons cos it’s gonna get chillier!
At number two? We’ve got the beautiful El Golfo.
It’s a small seaside village on the outskirts of Timanfaya national park. The two big reasons people visit El Golfo are found just outside the village.
Looking down from the cliffside pathway, you’ll pass a beautiful black sand beach lined with big volcanic rocks. The rocks act as a breakwater, and the tall white waves crashing against them really is a site to behold.
Keep following the path and you’ll have a clear view of the famous El Lago Verde, or The Green Lake. It’s teeming with volcanic minerals and micro-organisms - that’s what gives it this vivid green colour.
I don’t know if it’s the black sand, or the crashing waves and the clouds but everything's just so dramatic. Especially the giant green volcanic puddle. Crazy!
Number 3 is the stunning Jameos Del Agua. This was the first tourist destination created by Lanzarote’s famous César Manrique who we mentioned earlier. It’s a cross section of art, design and nature. There’s an auditorium, gardens - and even a fantastic restaurant.
A staircase follows the slope of the lava tunnel down to a pool that is the home of the blind lobster, an endemic local species.
Jameos Del Agua’s designer Cesar Manrique wanted to give visitors somewhere to contemplate a natural attraction, formed almost entirely without human intervention. Even gardens in the open-air section of the caves were designed with this in mind.

I just came back from a 10 day Lanzarote trip, and the one thing which 'hit' me the most, was the total absence of advertising signs on all the island !
According to one of our tour guides, this was requested by César Manrique, in order to keep the landscape clean of all visual intrusion.
I am so glad that the 'no advertising' rule is fulfilled completely on the whole island of Lanzarote!
Thank you very much César !

As someone lucky enough to live way up in the north of Lanzarote, I think your choice of locations was inspired, and you've really captured the essence of the place in what you show and especially in what you say. I'm sure you realise you could easily shoot an "Another 9 awsome things" video -and they would still all be just as amazing. This small island is rich with scenery, history and culture. Thank you for coming to Lanzarote and making this video. I've already shared it with friends who will be comig to see us here for the first time. I hope we will see you here again soon.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really was surprised by how fascinating the island was, and you're completely right. We could have shot another three videos packed with amazing things to visit. Condensing the schedule for this shoot down to something realistic was so difficult! Knowing all the great things we couldn't cover, it warms my heart to know that we did the island justice. I hope your friends enjoy their trip! - Jake

I have long championed Lanzarote for its culture and indeed César Manrique.
So many tourists visit the island and remain unaware of just how many places of interest exist.
Did you ever visit Omar Sharifs former home?
Nestled in the little town of Nazaret, and built within volcanic rock, lays the restaurant of Lagomar. A unique restaurant with impressive surroundings including caves, grottoes, a pool, and secret passages. The grounds in which the restaurant is set was formally the location of the property of Omar Sharif.
If your unaware of this place you should Google it as I'm sure you will be fascinated :)

I have been there twice because I loved it so much that I had to go again. Really lovely island, it's the perfect holiday for a couple or a family. Everything so handy, so true about the car rental option, you can park at every place worth the visit. Don't forget to try the local wine EL Grifo from grapes planted on lava soil, the taste is unique. I would recommend a minimum stay of one week, because although is a small Island you will be surprised about all the places that you will want to visit, you can have 2 nice relaxed excursions on your own for 5 days or so while enjoying the ride from one place to the next one.
If you are a motorbike lover, renting one bike to move around will be a really nice experience as well.

I visited Lanzarote this past summer and so far it was the Best vacation I have ever had. We also rented a car and went around the whole Island. We didnt have time to visit everything and I am glad because that means we will be going back sometime in the future ❤️ We visited sooooo many place but my personal favorites were: Timanfaya National Park, Mirador del Río, César Manrique Foundation and Jardin de Cactus😍 It was our first vacation together with my boyfriend and we could not have chosen a better destination. Cant wait to go Back 💞

When visiting Timanfaya, could you drive yourself into the park? Or did you have to take the bus? Curious to know if you can do your own thing there, or if you have to travel with a tour.

    • @lucienne9476
      @lucienne9476 Před 4 lety +1

@@dominey you can ride up to the restaurant (there is a parking lot) and then you have to take the bus to see the national park 😊 and i am glad that they are not letting people in in their cars. There are a lot of tourist behaving worse than animals (i saw it all over Lanzarote), so they would probably destroy a lot of things.

Really enjoyed this video. We love Lanzarote been 5 times. went in December just before Christmas it's beautiful. We stay in Costa Teguise and recommend going on the island tour it shows you most of the places on your video in one full 8hr trip. Visiting old teguise on a Sunday you get to see the old capital with the biggest Sunday market. Can't wait to go back.

We would have loved to be able to visit the Teguise Market! Unfortunately we visited midweek, but it's on the bucket list. There are some fantastic tours available from large towns like Costa Teguise. They're a fantastic way to see the island if you don't have a hire car too! Do you think you'll be going back this year?

    • @debhunt6555
      @debhunt6555 Před 4 lety

Definitely in December I've booked the time off work already. Prices come down nearer to the time so we book up then. Nothing better than leaving cold weather behind and feeling the sun again 24 degrees last time! The teguise market is massive and easy to get to on the local bus ( if you don't hire a car) but they do get packed and only every half hour back to Costa teguise. We go over to fuerteventura for the day when we go too

Omar Sharif process it for 24 hours before he loose it in a card game. It is now a museum and you can drinc and eat there. It is an amazing place!!!

I really enjoyed your video on an island I was enchanted by when we holidayed there in the 1980s. It was like no other place I have visited in my long life. I remember going on a guided tour down into caverns formed by lava rivers.......one part was big enough to be used as a cathedral like concert hall, if I remember rightly. We stayed in a simply gorgeous hotel......designed by You-know-who, of course! Lastly, compliments on your presenting style....very nice. I loved Lanzerote, and its people, and I hope it hasn’t been badly hit by Covid.
