Building an Outdoor Table

- This DIY outdoor table is made out of 2x cedar and only requires a few basic power tools to build. I made a version with an all wood top as well as a version that uses some salvaged materials like a glass shower door and some stone tile. I prefer cedar for outdoor projects due to the look and durability but any 2x lumber will work. to find a cedar dealer near you go to:

I really like it! It has a Frank Lloyd Wright look to it.
Absolutely gorgeous
thank you!
This has a very Frank Lloyd Wright / Fay Jones look. Super creative!
yes! def has FLW vibes
It looks like an Enzo Mari design! 🤩🤩🤩
That looks amazing. It would've taken someone ages to design and plan all that out beforehand to do it the "correct" way, but sometimes just going slow and using your eye is all you need
make the pieces and then just play!
Really cool. Reminds me of Enzo Mari approach to design. I think he'd be very pleased and inspired.
I love this so much! It reminds me of something I'd see in a Prairie-style home
yes! I could see that
Frank Lloyd Wright with a postmodern Touch ❤
little bit!
A joy to watch your videos.
Your workshop makes a great backdrop in the videos as well.
Always inspiring and I admire your imagination to keep coming up with great designs.
Well done.
One Handed Maker - Australia
It looks like Kuma Kengo san's Kumo no Ue gallery in Kochi prefecture. what a great looking table it is
This is SO beautiful! And it's bind boggling that you did not pre plan this design, it looks EXTREMELY premeditated haha!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video and table. The build was like a jazz composition. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🙏🐒
Glad you enjoyed it! it was a fun one!
you sir are wonderful. what a creative mind. thank you .
Really like the design
I like the Japanese design cues, as well as the bringing together of wood, stone etc. Very Zen. 😉
Thank you! Cheers!
Isn't it more like China pavilion at Expo 2010?
WOW this is really cool
Kengo Kuma has a lot of similar designs! You inspired me to do a outdoor table too :)
yes!
@@HomeMadeModernI was thinking Rietveld de Stijl look.
Love it man, really interesting shape and well executed!
Thank you! Cheers!
0:08 seconds in and I’m already in love with this table design!!!!🤯🤍
thank you!
Definitely can see the japanese architecture once you mention it. Light, foating feel to their design. Love it!
Right on! check out Kengo Kuma!
For an on the fly design it looks so awesome, Ben! The all wood vesion looked great too, but indeed too dark for the plant...
Thanks so much!
Freaking amazing. Thank you for the elegance
Glad you like it!
Such a nice concept
thank you!
A+ design!
thank you!
Happy haircut!
Good concept. Well narrated.
thank you!
Very cool great job
thank you!
Sadly I do not know anything about architecture, cultural and building styles or who the current masters of design are BUT I do know what I like. And this piece was absolute love at first sight! It’s definitely a table that would be the highlight of any designed backyard spaces. But can also see it being the gorgeous focal point of an indoor dining room or eat-in-kitchen in many different homes of people who individually love different design styles. You have honestly created a masterpiece. I am beyond impressed and extremely grateful that you posted this. Sincerely, thank you!

PS I love how customizable this piece is
PSS The only architectural genius I know of is Frank Lloyd Wright because I learned of him in high school and fell in love with his waterfall house.
thank you! I think it will end up on my patio!
Enzo Mari´s Autoprogettazione vibes
love his work!
Hi Ben, i Really was thinking Japanese as soon as I saw it, Beautiful design.
thank you!!
What a cool way, to 'built as you go'.
It's such a showstopper, I would totally use it an a dining room table, though!
It would also offer very interesting possibility for a low cost 'upcycling' build, made from whatever scrap wood one could find or cheaply aquire. It doesn't need to be all the same type of wood, after all, as long as it looks deliberate.
Yes! this style could totally be done out of mixed scrap. a table saw to mill down pieces to the same width though would make that a lot easier.
Nice japan inspiration
thank you!
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
I have seen Japanese furniture with similar construction elements. Looks really good. Hard to believe it was not planned
thank you! I didn't include the parts where I un screw pieces and re cut them
I really liked that you just built it like lego and felt your way through tbe project.
yes I like this an optional approach for woodworking as a hobby because some people want to escape into building and not have to think have to think intensely.
I’m not sure what Japanese architecture you are talking about. But it reminds me of the wooden Japanese puzzles we had as kids.
Kengo Kuma!
Very nice. Are you referencing Dylan Iwakuni? I love the use of cedar and upcycling the materials that you already had.
Kengo Kuma is who I was thinking but good reference and I totally see it!
Yep.... this is good stuff.
thank you!
I can smell this video
what does it smell like?
Cedar, paint and stone dust 🙌🏻
Creative design. BTW, this can be done with dado instead of screws.
Very bauhaus or De Stijl even more. Similar to Gerrit Rietvelds and Marcel Breuers works in 1920s
I could def see some Rietveld in it!
pagoda? it looks awesome.
yes! thank you!
Very cool table but it will be hard to avoid sore toes and knees using it😂
it over hangs quite a bit so I am not worried
I'm guessing the Kasugai Museum by Kengo Kuma or the Swiss Pavillion by Peter Zumthor?
The Kengo Kuma is one of my favorite buildings ever! I do like Peter though and met him when I was in university.
Is the design based off the Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum by Kengo Kuma?
Yes! that is one of my favorite buildings!
❤❤
Very wabi sabi and Japanese like.
yes!
This definitely gave me a Japanese vibe. Is there a name to this style?
not really although it reminds me of some craftsman style, FLW, and Japanese builds
I'm gonna guess it's based on a Kengo Kuma building. Hard to say which one though - he's been pretty prolific throughout the past 20 years. Edit: maybe Shigeru Ban over Kuma.
yes! nailed it! love his work
Gerrit Rietveld
I don’t have an old shower door just lying around
As much as this dude was trying to curate a build for you, it looks like he missed the mark 🙄
which is why I showed an all wood version
As a person with long legs and big feet, that table makes me cringe.
An outdoor table? There are a LOT of locations for insects/spiders to hide, looks difficult/time consuming to clean. Unless maintained, I can see this table warping in less than 4 seasons.
Well, he kinda lives in the desert, so probably a slightly different outlook on rot and infestations 😅
It's true though. If you live in climate, where wood needs regular maintenance...
As someone without access to a fully fledged workshop, I like the concept, though.
So what?
Why would it warp? It’s dimensional cedar. I’d say the only cause for concern is where the glass meets the wood May trap moisture. There are sooo many dining tables you could say “that would suck to dust. It’s the same thing.
You're seriously whining about insects? You're invalidating every patio and picnic table on the planet.
You're SUPPOSED to maintain furniture, even indoors.
Looks like it was designed by Kemgo Kumar my man 🤌❤️
It was! good eye!
