Molten Metal Table Base

- I melted metal and made a table base that extends through holes in a wood slab. I used a tin and bismuth alloy that melts at just 286 degrees and used it to fill in holes in a wood slab that extend through to create a sculptural base. Tin and Bismuth can be combined to create a nice looking metal alloy that melts at low temperatures and is easy to work with.
I am not sure what kind of wood this is but if you know let me know in the comments.

Very cool exploratory project, Ben!
Thank you Brad!
Melt down a mountain dew can Brad
Two Goats right here!!!! Brad, Ben's chillin in da desert toking on Peyote, staring at the stars!!! Boom Shacka Lacka an idea pops into his mind. I'mma build a table that legit looks like home tree from Avatar!!!! Hoping all is well my Homies, Dirty Jersey out!!!
For making it less shinny you could try sandblasting it. I like how the metal looks when the surface tension makes it bubble above the surface and is super smooth. Of course then it oxidizes.
good call!
What about paint with some bleach type liquid to thin out remove paint thrown on? Like how they do clothing to give dark colors that funky look? Then add the sandblasting technique. I don't know if it can be pulled off but in my mind it looks awesome!
I really like how the cast metal mimics the tin foil exactly, it would take a lot of work and polishing to get stainless steel to look like that
That's what I thought. It looks stunning. And for so little effort!
You could also use and oil paint wash to dull down the metal. It has the edit effect of bringing out some of the fine details. Black Magic Craft has some tutorials about this subject.
will check that out!
Very cool. I liked the 'try and correct as you go' approach as well! As the viewer, it gives me different options for different results, withouts even having to experiment myself.
Also makes it less intimidating. It's nice to work with a material, where you can correct 'happy little accidents', if necessary.
And the finished table looks *very* high end.
Very cool. I know Bob Ross' happy accidents is overused but for some reason it fits on this build!
yes!
Love this!
thank you Jonny!
This is awesome!
I think steel shot and/or steel wool is also a filler option worth considering, especially if you use some flux to help the tin flow onto it.
A steel powder with a quick hit of the torch to melt it into place, followed by a tannic acid (instant coffee or instant tea; oak gall decoction; etc.) etch/oxide conversion might give an interesting finish.
thank you for the info! will try!
super fun and creative project!
You could makes some texture stamps out of silicone then use a heat gun to soften the metal and stamp texture into the metal with the silicone stamps. Might be cool to use a bark texture that transitions to smooth texture as you move further away from the table top. A kind of organic to synthetic approach.
I was surprised you didn't use the torch to smoothen the metal.
For dulling the colour of the metal, cold bluing liquid works on a bunch of different metals. If it reacts with your alloy then you could apply it with a spray bottle.
PS: great idea. I love that piece
Looks cool🤩
I've been following you. This is my favorite thing you've done. Thanks.
thank you!
Super video. Love the experimentation of unique materials. Table is dope! Very inspiring. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank You! it was a fun experiment
Nice project! Beautiful.
thank you!
What a great project Ben.
thank you!
That looks amazing!
thank you!
That is soooo cool!!!! Awesome job Ben🤯🤍
To dull you could use a sand blaster, Amazon has some pretty cheep ones to buy.
Pretty awesome table, i like the look of the metal going through the wood into the "trunk"....great idea 👍👍
good idea!
Very unique!
thanks Bruce!
Lots of good experimentation here
You're more like an artist, now! 👍🏾
😮 wow this is fantastic ❤
That is an interesting technique, and result
Interesting concept, I like it.
Looks alien, like something you might have seen on Star Wars 'Clone Wars'. Very nice.
Love it! ❤❤❤
can you scrub down the metal with coarse steel wool to make it more matte?
Good experimenting, didn’t love the end result on this one but I think with some more working with it you could get a great result
Would a matt spray can varnish work?
रुचिकर शिल्प। आपकी अख्यापन शैली सौम्य व आकर्षक है। इस प्रकल्प में सहायक उपकरणों का आख्यापन सहायक है, किंतु विज्ञापन की अति भी है।

Long time no see! Cool looking project
Thank you! Been traveling and working on the new house!
That's a pretty neat idea. Definitely like the ability to correct mistakes with a torch or Dremel.
What was that face mask you were using when you were sanding?
3M versa Flo
Very cool. reminds me of the ant farm pours- I'm sure you have seen some of those before. Fascinating idea, keep em coming!
yes! love those!
top $$$ for a dining table made like this!
I agree! but would need a big slab!
Cool piece. Maybe you could dry sandblasting the metal to make it look more dull.
will try!
Rad dude.
thank you
Looks like juniper to me. My dad made me tables out of it and they look the same.
Beautiful project as always. What is the helmet/mask you're using?
HomeMadeModern -- Where did you got your helmet/vacuum? Very Alien! Loved the idea of this table.
Sand blast to take down the shine.
SOOOOOOO COOL. FRECH 💋
WOW!! 👍💓!!!
I’d probably try to blue the metal if it works with this alloy
How many pounds of the metal alloy did you use for this table?
Doesn’t neat vinegar oxidise metal?
You are so insanely creative, Ben. Your videos are always inspirational to just get out there and try something, evening if I don’t know for sure if it will work!
red cedar, i use it a lot.
sines when did lead become metal?
Just use a sand gun blaster on the "tree" that should remove the shine
Interesting
yes, a dining table is what I am thinking to take the idea farther
Matte clear spray paint to tone down the shininess of the metal
yeah it takes it down a little bit
Do you have a link to the tin alloy? I checked the description but no luck and your website link isn't working for some reason.

a scouring pad or you can submerge the chrome in a solution of muriatic acid to brign down the shine!
look at some Novacan products for blackening/copper-plating tin
Por favor me dice que metal es? No entiendo su idioma😢
Could you play around with patinas used in stained glass and copper work to make it less shiny? I know you can dip hot steel in motor oil to give it a blued look. But, the melting point is so low on the tin/ bismuth I don't know how you could accomplish that.
that's what I was thinking as well
面白い~~~
:)
❤
media blast it. diy sandblaster
The shape kinda' looks like cypress.
and its pretty hard!
Very cool project! For the base, maybe you can "copper brush" it? Laura Kampf explained it here : m.czcams.com/video/6-Wn99g0YZI/video.html
Would be cool!
Ben though this might be of interest or value to you.

If you look at previous 4 videos he shows how easy it is to make graphene. It would mean you could use 1/3 less concrete for your projects
Интересно, но для меня не красиво.
i dont like it.
This looks like all the silver fillings in my teeth.
lol not that shiny
