The sound engineer deserves a raise.
They should have made Kirk’s guitar a bit louder ngl
I agree. This is pure eargasm.
Greg Fidelman you mean
we all say that. Metallica should hire him!
Though Howard Stern has their own engineer for stuff at their studio, I'm 99.9% sure by the sounds of this it's their producer/engineer Greg Fidelman, especially with the fact they're using a snare sample. Would make a lot more sense to mix it all at their legit studio that's probably already have got everything mix ready on the daily to record, and just send them over the stereo mix.
Isn’t it great seeing James back at his feet and Metallica better than ever?
Especially considering Lars said before they recorded that drive in show they hadn’t been together since S&M2
I don't want to sound too emotional, but seeing him and the whole band healthy, happy and so good sounding had a bigger emotional impact on me than I expected...Jeez
A long vacation makes them better
Fuckin aye it is. Made me happy definitely
Yes!!! They seem sooo relaxed and good looking. They needed that time off.
That solo always gives me chills
It is a awesome solo, the entire song has an eerie vibe I can't explain. Its just out of this world
One of their best....ever. Feel wise.
douche chills
Yeah maybe when he plays it right
You should watch the recording process ,he plays so many bad solos and Bob rock is getting angry with him,he just says impress me,it's such a beautiful moment,it's almost like an out of body experience, like he sells his soul and you can see he's just playing on emotion, this solo comes out if nowhere compared to the others he played
5:48 holy shit, black album James is trying to break free.
Hes still got it. It just takes a huge toll on his voice anymore.
@@kgot7436 Yeah I bet if he were to really try to sing the way he did in the 80s/90s he would be able to but not for long periods of time. Would take a huge toll on his voice
James’ voice sounds better than ever
Sounded better in the late 80's/early 90's, but he does sound amazing here.
I would pay $20 to watch a full set.
@Zachary Buckley He's getting older, I'll still take the pitchy mistakes over nothing at all.
@Zachary Buckley where can I listen to this?
better than ever, hahahahaha, that's a good one. keep the jokes going.
This is basically a remastered version of The Unforgiven
Re-recorded. Pretty awesome that it's *really* in the studio.
@@ReMetallicMusic yeah, there are already plenty of remastered versions of the song. They also performed St. Anger (the whole album) live in their studio and it was amazing, way better than the album sounds.
This sounds a lot like the album version. We all know what an absolute MASTERPIECE the original versio is. And for them to be able to sound so close to that after such a long time, being a couple of years away from their 60'...I think this says a lot about this band...
@@davidhrehoresen5800 couldn't agree more.
@@ReMetallicMusic love your downtuning vids
"That old man here is me..." hits now me more than ever seeing James being gray and old. I think when he will be gone, when he will die someday.... I will play this song. Man he is as old as my father is, and I can't imagine hurt I will feel when one of them will die. What a great artist Papa Het is.
Heatfield is a Leyend, he never die, Metallica forever. 🖤🤘
Burz Tur bro you made me cry :(
James is 57, maybe 58 now. He's far from "death age". He's not senile. You act like he has maybe 3 years left to live.. smh. That's not that damn old.
I'm guessing you're probably like 16, so yes, 57 seems "old".
@@the_minimalistic_adventure I'm 21 and I see my parents at same age as Hetfield and they are cleary near to death
uncle het will live always in our hearts
After Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell departed us, I'm so glad that we still have James' masterful voice still.
Everyone will gone one day don't too pride about what we are today it's all about a time
You have a great taste of music then
@@KingMetaloy yeah, but we have the internet, so they'll never really leave us.
With all due respect to Chris and Chester, James is a God and rates incomparibly higher.
the day metallica stops playing, a big piece of my soul and my heart will stop existing too.....but they'll play on forever in my heart
Never hit the play buttons so fast. Love that Unforgiven guitar.
Me 2
Why does Howard’s sound mixer always make Metallica sound better than anyone else?!!
Because Metallica *are* better than anyone else
It's because when they play on Howard Stern, they're in a studio environment, so the sound can be much more controlled than in a big arena.
This is not Howard's team. This is mixed by Fidelman at HQ. The broadcast mix was worse.
@@paradigmshiftz7 I dont know about that, Howard has had some seriously talented musicians on his show. Not saying Metallica isn't really good, just that there are other people/bands who are equally as good.
Sterns mix was shit actually
5:57. Classic Hetfield growl. He can still pull it off if he wants to. Amazing after 30 years since the release of the Black Album.
Exactly! i played it a million times!
This song has a reversed structure where the verses have the heavy electric guitar parts and the chorus the melodic acoustic parts.
Another piece of Metallica genius songwriting.
One of there best in my opinion this and fade to black are my favorites
Holy shit!!!!!! James sounds the best he'd ever sounded, one moment he sang and it sounded perfectly equal to the black album, congratulations you guys, and please reschedule the Brazil show, we need it
Tô sonhando com esse show kkkk
As well as James has lost weight. Hopefully he's doing alright. And dear God I hope we've got another album coming our way
@@danielfilipe1815 Eu tbm kkkk. Não vejo a hora
I think I prefer the album take, but I'm gonna have to listen to this and the album a few times to decide. This comes really close to unseating that performance, and that's a fantastic one. I really like the choices made with the melody here.
@@thiagoaaaaaaaaa eu tbm bixo, tomará que nao cancelem o show, ia ficar mó triste
5:47 James’ voice here brings tears to my eyes!
for many years, I used to play the last 30 seconds of Unforgiven, again and again. and also the high pitched shout, 'my friend of miserrrreeeeyyy'. I can't believe he still sings this well.
got u mate
Me too
shivered
i feel u brother!
Holy mother of God. I have basically listened to almost every decent live recording of this song. This version is the best. There are parts of this performance that are literally better than the album version. Absolutely stunning performance.
'92 San Diego?
@@egorplaysdarksouls Maybe. This performance is autotuned, so maybe that one wins out. No autotune in 1992.
One of Hetfield's best live vocal performances easily. Good god, what an incredible talent this man is. This band, and this SONG. The best version of Unforgiven I've heard. These guys really are on the level with The Beatles as far as I'm concerned.
Insane that they sound this good in 2020...
I would pay $20 to watch a full set.
Sound engineer.
@@adilakif0061 looks like you aint ever going to a full set then
Why?
@@adilakif0061 I paid seventy bucks twenty somethin years ago cheapskate.. to watch this tour!
James voice is like a wine really. Never gets old. Always goes better
i Love james... but this coment is not even near to "true"
I like this comment but the way I see it, his voice now suits songs like this but justice era takes the cake for the thrash voice
@@yunglonewolf9078 compare with his age. I agree with you but maybe he can sing a thrash song with a perfect voice in a studio
The greatest metal band in the whole universe...am i right ??
Dude, when he started singing, it sounded like 89-99 James, for real, he sounds really good, and so does the rest of the band, looking forward to the next album!!
Excellent mix. James' voice belongs in the Library Of Congress. Metallica are an American treasure.
Master of Puppets actually is. In 2015 it was deemed to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry becoming the first metal album to do so
@@TheJerseyNinja that's awesome
One of the best comment I have ever read.
Best band since the Beatles broke-up.
Sir, they are a world treasure too :). halfway across the globe, never been to your country, but a metallica fan since the early 90s, and till my last breath.
So good to see them back together and enjoying themselves again!
Legend
Oh, that's you
Good to see you again
Yeah the long rest period was good for them. Especially at their age.
That’s so true! Ever since the release of Hardwired to Self Destruct, Metallica in general seem like they really enjoy playing together again. That’s why I’m so hyped that they’ve been writing new music during the pandemic since they haven’t been able to tour. I can’t wait to hear what they have in store for us! If they expand off the stuff they did off Hardwired then we’ll be in for a treat!💪🏻🤘🏻
I hope Metallica will have time for one more concert after coronavirus is gone, Metallica helped me through depression and idk where I would be if Metallica wasn’t here and I just wanna thank you Metallica
Me too...✌💜😁🎸🎤🎧🎹🎬
I hope you are happy and you have seen them or you will 🤘🤘
Crazy to think that just next year Metallica turns 40 and the Black Album turns 30. Its amazing to see how far they came
dude,... goosebumps at 5:47 !! this was unbelievable and even better than on the record! thanks metallica! I had tears in my eyes seeing you guys doing fine and be back together!
YES.... same reaction. Unbelievably powerful vocal performance by James here...
a little return of black album era voice
Fucking Stellar I must say! 😳😢🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍👍👍👐👐👐👐👐
I'm so dead.
Everyone is talking about James's voice, but no one is talking about how great Kirk is playing. He never sounded this good for very long time. Rob is amazing as always.
And Lars plays very good too :)
KIRK always play very good it's just the sound quality here
@@MegaTeostyle No, listen to Wherever I May Roam from Howard Stern and Lars just cant keep right timing in that song. But Unforgiven he managed to play it almost in tempo
Edzio Pedzio the song is slower than usual...that’s why you think so. I’m talking about Wherever I may roam.
So this doesnt change the fact, that Lars cant play in time. No matter if song is speed up or played slower than usual
I was afraid that James's voice would suffer when he's off the drink but I'm glad he sounds as good as before rehab!
How lucky are we? We can see them alive. Future generations will envy us.
The best they have ever performed the unforgiven... awsome!
5:48 James is back!
The way its played kind of reminds me of the remake they did of Bob Segers "Turn the Page".
Everyone talking about how great Stern's sound engineer is
You do realize this was remixed and remastered by Greg Fidelman right xDD
Fidelman's the best dude they got on the team, his mixing talent is out of this world
@M J Lars brought in his Hardwired drumkit now, the green drumkit he uses in studio and tuning room has been replaced now.
@@fedora997 That Means We will have new album nearly!! 'When Lars takes de main drums to the HQ, This Kit should not out to road again, and we have a new Drum Kit with anothe colour! ;)
@@MrShangtsung Yes indeed, Lars did say earlier in the year (when the pandemic was first declared and when James left rehab) they were sharing and giving each other different ideas and riffs for a new album. And now he changed kits its pretty much out there they're going to work on new material. 5 years isnt bad considering we had to wait 8 years for Hardwired
one of the best performance, the unforgiven.
I wonder if Kirk will ever get the respect he deserves
why does kirk get so much hate?
@@cobaltskyhammer9600 Because people thinks hes the "worstest" of the greatest due to his "bad" technic

My god! Has Greeny given Kirk the best tone he's ever had on this song!
That solo sounded amazing!!
Must be that garage sale Les Paul he's got going.
Not a bad find...
kmobass a ‘59 Les Paul
Every time he plays that guitar it upgrades his playing. Listen to the tone, vibrato, and soul at 4:12. More!
Absolutely. Kirk's tone has been so good recently. When he played the greeny in the peter green tribute concert it was impeccable
My favorite song.
James sounds awesome. Stay strong Papa Het
@@albertreade7607 You're the poser, he's known as Papa Het and always will be

Watching this, reminds me of that scene in Some Kind of Monster (commentary edition), where Lars mentions that James' favourite colour is purple, so he'd told Rob to wear a purple shirt on the day of his audition. I mean, notice HOW much purple there is!
My favorite Mettalica solo ever.. The Unforgiven , NoThing Els Maters
The drums sound godly on this, especially the snare!
It sounds the same as the snare used on the Black album
@@fedora997 nice name
@@paradigmshiftz7 Thanks
Maybe a new snare for the new album they’re supposedly working on
Definitely a sample blend, Greg Fidelmann has been using a sample on all their mixes since they started having him mix the live videos in like 2017.
This was so good. Glad to see James looking healthy and well. I miss his hair he was growing out tho. Would love to see it get 80s length again
I believe its when James grows his long hair back, its when he needs to go to reheb. I smell deep connections here
@@kolonizator117 well, he grew out his hair in 2003/2004 after rehab, this time was the opposite
@@kolonizator117 he also was gaining quite a bit of weight somewhat around the time too. That may be another sign.
my god james sounds amazing. this song also hurts with james not being 30 anymore. love you papa het and metallica. for many more decades of preforming or simply enjoying yourselves
Holy fucking shit.
Is there a limit to how much better James‘ voice gets with age?
This performance just made me relive 10 years of my youth in six and a half minutes.
Finally Kirk's guitar is in tune with James's guitar
LOL yes! Kirk sounds really good here!
You think so? Im glad to see metallica soud this way, but is true , then i hear the solo i am convinced the all band soud very tune!
Nope - the Solo at 3:50 is not in the right tune :-) - wrong notes :-D
@@oswinzloebl9832 well Kirk always loose some notes so..
That's what using a non trem guitar can do.
Hoping for this corona madness to stop so we can see Metallica on world tour again..🤟
Old is gold, the best piece of Metallica.
Some parts of James' voice reminds me of his old style, Kirk lowered the Wah a lil bit, and Lars is actually on tempo, they sound really good
Glad to see James is doing well, His voice is the best it has been in years, and it already was great. lml
If James can sound this good on the new album, it might be time to seriously re-evaluate my top 5 Metallica albums list.
What's your list?
@@j.crispy Tends to change a bit, but it's usually close to 1. Ride the Lightning 2. Master of Puppets 3. Black Album 4. Kill Em All and 5. AJFA. I take production value into account there so that's what helps the Black Album and hurts AJFA/Kill Em All
If we're talking about favorite songs though, completely different list, and spit out the bone is for sure top 10. That's why I think the next album is gonna be great. They've still got it. I mean, Judas Priest just put out a top 5 album of theirs very recently. Metallica can too.
@@davismiller3769 Nice list. I definitely appreciate your top 3 ranking. Mine is RTL>Black>Master>Kill>Justice but I don't think there's a Metallica album I'm particularly too hard on besides half of St. Anger (and we don't count Lulu). What are your top 10 songs?
Ignore this lol
@@Omar_E11 Changes very frequently, but if I had to make the list:

2) Master of Puppets
3) Orion
4) Fade to Black
5) Call of Kthulu

7) Damage Inc
8) Spit out the Bone
9) Dyers Eve
10) The Unforgiven

Sterns live performance sounds FAWK! The sound engineer needs a massive raise..
Its not Howard's engineer
@DF Bass Covers - fair enough bro. Still is a supreme mix, whoever did it..
@@Intelli-gent01 Greg Fidelman did it. He has been Metallica's sound engineer on live videos for a few years.
I'd cry if i could, but i'm too high. This is simply divine..😢
That song always reminds me of someone who did the unforgivin, 1991..I was 18..An it still gives me the same feeling 30 yrs later. You guys have always bin #1 to me an your music got me through a lot of hard times. Wish I could've saw you more. I would give anything to have had Howard's seat when they were playing that. \m/
