  • Testing out the new overdrive gears from Treal! My main concern with these gears was heat on the motor. Do they cause more heat?

    First off love the video’s. You Sir,are by far the most knowledgeable and in-depth content creator for the scx24’s.Your also extremely genuine and seem to do this for the fun alone. I have a request, I was on a Facebook group and I saw a comment that stated, running the front overdrive helps prevent the front double barrel shocks from unloading so much up inclines. If you care to test it out I would appreciate it. I have DB shocks but don’t run them often because they hurt steep climbing performance, I’m also looking into the OD gears,and if it works, I won’t have to buy new shocks! Thanks

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  Před 2 lety +1

      I really appreciate that! I would say with my use of the double barrels and overdrive together that they probably do help a tiny bit but honestly the double barrels are just bad about unloading on the steep stuff. I still run them on my orange cage build but that’s it. Honestly if I had it to do over I’d probably just go with a set of oil filled carismas or my current fav are the treal aluminum oil filled shocks with the vlp springs off the double barrels. I’ve just come to like a bit shorter shock most of the time myself though.

  • @GrimJerr
    @GrimJerr Před 3 lety +4

    As I understand it, once you install an overdrive it will cause additional loading, so lots of high speed sustained will translate to motor heat. The advantage is when climbing the overdrive diff spins faster to help you climb, but costs you top speed and loading as the two gear boxes (diffs) are working against each other, the front will drag the rear and cause loading in the drive train.

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah it’s not really noticeable with these gears but I’ve ran some higher overdrive in my Capra and it was way too much. Felt like you were dragging the rear end everywhere. The sweet spot on my Capra is about 24% overdrive. Just barely noticeable but still has the benefit of tighter turns and slightly better climbing. These are only like 14% so not hardly even noticeable when driving.

    FYI Using that temp unit, The accuracy is off with the sticker first off because that unit reads off of reflection, not IR. That temp unit has programming adjustments for whatever material you are using it with, such as polished, or anodized, painted, etc...

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah I didn’t need exacts. Just curious how the temp would raise with and without the gears. Same setting,same motor only difference was gears so it’s close enough. Really didn’t even matter because the gears cause no extra heat at all.

  • @Chris-zu8ve
    @Chris-zu8ve Před 3 lety +3

    Most folks who have heat issues, is because they are driving them like a 1/10th scale race truck, and or weighing the trucks down with tons of brass. Short runs like you are driving should show no noticeable heat increase, at least not where it will burn the motor out. If motor does go, it is usually because of lack of quality and control in the motor build.

  • @guillermosuarezlecuona860

    Cool video dude, keep it up! One question though, what I don't get is why would you want to get OD when crawling, when basically what you want is high torque to try to climb as easily as possible. Of this is a crawler why would you want higher speed and less torque? One thing is to get higher tires and not get the motor to stall with the bigger tires. Thanks!

    • @2fmrc
      @2fmrc  Před 3 lety

      The overdrive helps the front spin before the rear a bit. It helps on steep inclines where the rear wheels will sometimes cause you to loop out or lift the front end. With the front sort of engaging first and harder than the rear it’ll sort of pull the truck up the hill. It also helps turning radius because the front sort of drags the rear a bit. Kinda like using dig on the rear when turning but not fully engaging it. As far as the motor getting hot I just replace that stock junk ASAP lol

    Got to remove that sticker on the stock motor. It causes the motor to overheat and fail very quickly.
    My original motor failed in 2 weeks.
    Got an identical replacement motor and remove the sticker and all sticker residue it has been running just fine for several months.
    Motor failure on this truck is very common and it is always caused because of the sticker keeping the heat on the motor instead of dissipating the heat. This motor needs a heatsink not a fucking sweater!

      Haha! I don’t even run one with the stock motor any more! Basically like all rtrs. Toss the electronics and move on lol

    Been wondering forever now if these would help with climbing when you have long throw shocks ,,because of the wormdrives...on how it raises the height. Since its overdriven on front will it keep it from raising on an incline as much or at all?

      It really depends on the truck. I like the Aluminum oil filled carismas on a heavier rig with lots of flex. The aluminum hobbyplus cr24s are good on a mid flex type rig kinda like my Jeep was when I had it. The double barrels work well on a really light weight rig that you want a lot of flex on. The build I’m working on now I have the aluminum oil filled shocks from Treal with some vlp springs from a set of double barrels installed on them cause the ones they come with are too stiff imo and they seem really good so far. I just got that build together today and haven’t even really decided on a body or a few other things for it but the little bit of testing I did with it they seemed to do really well. Hope that helps even though it’s kinda a round about answer lol

      Did you install the o rings? One in each side of the worm gear?

      @@2fmrc I did. Everything is there how it should. Greased. Even with the drive shaft off just trying to spin the axel in near impossible but if you take the worm gear out the axe moves freely

    Don't stick a magnet on the motor as a heat sink. The can of the motor has magnets in it and you will completely screw up the operation of the motor by sticking a magnet on the outside of the can! I love this video but I can't believe you even said that?

      I ran a magnet on several motors until I upgraded them for better. Never had an issue with them. I see people burning them up all the time and I honestly have only killed one. Mostly got tired of them being weak and upgraded but the only one I actually killed was in a jeep I picked up used already. Usually people have binding issues or add too much weight. That’s when the stock motor really struggles.
