    We crossed 100 miles! Waking up in the morning to see torn food bags that were hung correctly the night before is a strong argument for the extra 2 pounds of a Bear Can to protect your food.
    Day 12
    Start - Standing Indian (mile 86.1)
    End - Rock Gap (mile 105.8)
    Miles walked for the day - 19.7

    Now I see the wisdom of your carrying bear cans. Now that the bears know they can get😮 food from the hanging bags, more hikers might decide to carry bear cans. Congratulations on reaching 100 miles!!!!! Amazing going 19 miles!

    I once was camping near a lake at a SC state park and about 4:00am in the morning I could hear something approaching my tent...definitely heavier than a squirrel. I could hear the crunching of leaves as the sound got closer until it passed right beside my tent! I was surely on heightened senses...later, I heard the most god-awful commotion coming from the lake; water splashing, etc.
    When there was more morning light later, I looked out of my tent to see a huge Beaver cruising in the water of the lake just off the bank. The aggressive water splashing is something they'll do with their flat tails.
    There are other things that could make the sounds you're hearing....deadfall branches falling...a Possum crunching through leaves as it walks, or a Bobcat. And there very well could be a Bear nearby.

    20 miles is epic! You two are crushing it. Each state will provide new surroundings. Pretend you’re walking country to country. Raining here too. April showers bring May flowers. My daughter and I with our dog hiked in Adirondacks and I just had a feeling bears were around, I yelled Hey bear! Most of trail. When we finally got to end of trail, there was the bear, 10ft away munching on berries. I was exhausted and could say nothing. Probley good cause our dog didn’t notice. We quickly exited and counted our blessings. Be careful out there.

    You, know, in Japan, along the Nakesendo Trail, they have bells for people to ring to scare away bears. I wonder if wearing bells while hiking would be a good idea, so they can hear you coming from far away….??? That may annoy some people(Thinking of my husband….),but I love the sound of bells.

    • @CloverHikes
      @CloverHikes Před 22 dny

    I've been on a FAR worse trail on my current ongoing Camino, in Portugal on the 2022 part of it -- something like 2 hours to "walk" a couple of hundred yards, but really just crawling on scorched earth dust next to a sheer drop into thumb-thick bramble bushes, on a "path" that was really just a 45° to 60° angle of burnt mountainside -- oh, and dragging my backpack and hiking staff behind me, having to be ultra careful to let neither slip out of my grasp down the cliff.
    Otherwise, that climb reminds me of the walk up in reverse (towards France) up to that iconic ridge on the Francès with all the windmills and the "cutout" iron pilgrim figures. That one is *seriously* easier in the "proper" direction than if you're going Eastwards ...
    ---
    Otherwise ? A 30K day in those mountains, even though most of the ups and downs seem relatively gentle compared to the worst you or I have trudged upon, that's still a good 40K equivalent, so well done the both of you !!

    Black bears are complete opportunists. 98% don't want a thing to do with humans and keep healthy distances. This is why I sleep with my food on anywhere on the east coast while backpacking. Bear smells food, but more importantly, bear smells you too and will always choose caution.
