  • firstly, apologies for the slightly quiet mic/loud music tonight - my little girl loves to mess about with the volume on the microphone and i forgot to check it tonight!
Tonight i listened to Katatonia and their song July. Loved it! Loved the sound of the music, tension, but loved the lyrics and the his delivery even more. I got a real sense of battling with inner thoughts and not letting them come out on show.

Katatonia is all about texture and melancholy. I think even though they've been harder it's best to go into the bulk of their material not really in the mood for metal that relies on power and bpms. Jonas has one of the most perfect voices ever, he can get away with being monotone because damn what a tone!

What an amazing voice. He can put melody into words simply whispering

Katatonia is my all time favorite band. This sense of "comfort" you talk about, (or intimacy if I may add) is the reason I love them so much, as well. Loved your reaction!
You should check out Follower (for a more "proggy" feel, especially for the drums) and Unfurl (for a more emotional song) which is my favorite from them.

All Jonas's emotions are like an undertow going through all their work, there is no drama, but the emotion is actually overwhelming, especially in their most recent record.
I think The Great Cold Distance is their best record, and that was a great choice from that one. The album I discovered them with was the one right before that, Viva Emptiness, and from that you might want to listen to Evidence or Complicity if you are doing more reactions of them.

Nah Great Cold Distance is one of their weakest, Viva Emptiness, Last Fair Deal Gone Down and The Fall of Hearts are all much better. I deem The Great Cold Distance as a down album...City Burials wasn't great either

Love this band and lucky enough to see them in two small venues in ATL. Jonas has a serious voice. You can also hear him with other artists, which is how I found Katatonia. Try "The Nearing Grave" by Long Distance Calling and some of Ayreon's excellent works. I'm sure there are more. Subbed.

I love Jonas Renske’s warm voice. You can also hear him in the Ayreon Universe live concert.
    Waking dreams. Comatose.
This song is much heavier than the more recent work I’m familiar with but I quite like it. The song has many layers and transitions. It’s a pity that the music is much louder than that of Jonas’s voice.

"this night belongs to you" = this night all my dark thoughts and nightmares are about you.
and in the chorus he says "it's violent here"... to represent all the scorn, anger, depression and "the abyss" she left among the ruins.
I've always found amazing that "tone" of Jonas voice, in contrast with the hardest parts of their songs.. Remember, it's "Katatonia" mood XD
Anyway, glad u reacted to them, hope to see more, soon!! regards

Katatonia is the type of band that will tell you they're about to kill you, explain how they're going to do it, and make you absolutely fine with it. Soothing and deadly. They're not a one song band, the depth, textures, and moods in an entire album is where the magic, like an altered state of mind. Love Katatonia so much!

I love Katatonia! they are dark and atmospheric. Many of their hooks are quite subtle and you get more and more with subsequent listens. Jonas has a very unique vocal delivery which I love

tbh, when you first said "welcome to northernear..." I heard: "welcome to knob-in-ear..." and i was thinking "wtf, am I gonna see here?" but then read the hash tag, and got it sorted
Also never heard such a literal interpretation of the song. Very interesting. You're definitely coming to this listen from a different place than I am... I really appreciated that you caught the simplicity of that "chorus/intro" part, where it's only 3 parts, but gets more complex from there... it's brilliant... they've only gotten more refined in their subtly and complexity since...
I warn people: If you listen to the Fall of Hearts album, it may ruin all other music for you... at least for the rest of the day. Nothing else holds up... it's nuts.

“It sounds like hes talking about someone he used to know…..” welcome to Katatonia. After years of loving K - I think his brother perhaps commited suicide - or was run over by a train (similar to the Helloween bass player) - but he most certainly speaks of relationships with ladies as well…. If hes just making up the feelings hes very good at it and has fooled me… Not sure I like these review videos but yours did hold my attention… btw: the time sig was not as bad as you think.

2nd ?? Then wtf is first lol?
If they havent suggested it bcz of being clearly one of the best songs in the universe , then they re just posers and metal fans without souls.
And why... oh.. why dont you just listen and feel the spirit and the energy and go fkn dance train or meditate on fire instead of talking poetically about nonsense n shit. This is why you prefer the delivery and lyrics more than the actual vibe in general bcz you just incapable to silence your mind to let it haunt you to fkn madness. This music transcends words which are there to just fill up the voice, and although i still appreciate talking about the technicalities of the sound and your interpretations of the lyrics , make no mistake, its just foolishness and not the real scope of the music

Katatonia is far more inspired than APC. APC is a knock off less interesting Tool that is only popular because they share a frontman/ vocalist.
