  • Although T Brinda passed on 25 years back on this day, she lives through the few recordings she left behind. Brinda is a very special musician to me, she was the first musician who made me crazy with her music. There were the days where I used to listen to nothing but her Kontegadu (Surutti Padam) for about 15 times a day. She is a musician who was highly sophisticated and extremely nuanced with her musical thinking. A musician who was easily way ahead of her times.
At the age of 12 my dad played T Brinda’s Ososi on the car on the way from Madurai to Chennai. All I remember was that I found it terribly monotonous, but I was left disturbed and perturbed after listening to it. I never got back to it then, but when I moved to England in 2017 I had the time in my hands to dwell deeper into this art form and develop my own taste in music.
On this day I hope to pay tribute her music by sharing a sloka which I believe encapsulates her music in the best way possible: her classic brukas that traverse across the octave (in the behag section), her range and vocal acrobats in the upper octave (kapi section) and her deep understanding of a raga (transition from surutti to sourastram). Even though she sings a raga for 2/3 minutes, the audience is left behind with a feeling of satisfaction, a feeling that they heard her for 10 minutes - the Nadanamakriya in the start is a good example of this.
    00:00 - Nadanamakriya
    03:17 - Sahana
    08:15 - Varali
    11:11 - Behag
    14:14 - Kapi
    17:32 - Surutti
    18:44 - Sourastram
She was accompanied in the violin by M Chandrashekaran. You can hear her encouraging him by saying "Bale" and "Sabhash" which was very unusual of Brinda. This was recorded in 1968 at the Music Circles Sabha. Buddhi Radu, A Thyagaraja composition in Shankarabharanam and Viloma Chapu Talam from the same concert can be heard in this link: • T Brinda & T Muktha | ...

The way each raga comes alive and shines with poorna bhaava in Brindamma's voice and musicality is divine, just something else. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for uploading this ragamalika slaka anna. You're absolutely right anna. Perhaps we have the same taste. Brinda's Kontegadu is one of my all-time favourites, and always has a place in my playlist!

I loved the transition from Behag to Kapi. It almost seemed like she was starting Behag again, but she seemlessly shifted to Kapi; as though Behag was making an announcement that it was now going to metamorphosize into Kapi. By the end of the comment, I realize that this was the case for every other raga. Truely magical, thanks for this upload (not sure how I missed this for 3 years) :)

The transition from Varaali to Behag is just out of the world 11:10. Ecstatic! ❤️

Though Brinda has been the musician who has captivated me for a long time, I have come to dwell on her music differently during the pandemic. Each note is so filled with sruti of the raga that she doesn’t miss a single anuswaram in transitioning between ragas. This kind of sruti continuity and immersion is quite extraordinary and unworldly, emblematic of the ideal given the time we live in…

Simply exquisite. It would be very nice to have the sloka lyrics if anyone can manage it.

Actually Bharat ratna has to be given to Danamma or anyone of her family. ( Jayamma. Brindamma. Mukthamma. Balamma).
