  • At the age of 57 (06/01/1969), Brinda's vocalisation, her aesthetics and her musicality was in its prime during this recording. It is not often that we get a chance to see these musicians tune their instruments and crack jokes while packing them up after the recording. This recording takes us back by 52 years and makes us feel like we were behind the camera listening to this in person. I am glad that Brinda and her music was recorded and preserved by Washington University.
    00:00 - Meru Samana - Mayamalavagowla - Adi - Thyagaraja
    08:43 - Tani Avartanam by T Ranganathan in Adi (2 Kalai)
    15:00 - Varnam - Sri - Adi - Pallavi Gopala
    17:08 - Tuning of the veena
    19:33 - Amba Neelambari - Neelambari - Adi - Ponniah Pillai
    27:22 - Packing up
    While packing up, we get a glimpse of how Ponniah Pillai's magnum opus in neelambari would've sounded when Brinda sings it. This teaser has left me in search for this recording, please drop a comment if you have a recording of Brinda singing Amba Neelambari.
    A performance by Carnatic musicians T. Brinda (voice, vina), T. Vega (voice, vina), and T. Ranganathan (mridangam). Recorded by Robert Garfias at the University of Washington.

    Most exquisite \ Soul stirring music. Perfection, measured Alana a, swarms, nereval etc. music that is made to sound easy but requires years of practice to strive and achieve this standard

    This is such a treasure! I had no idea she had performed in the US. I would have been a 1 year old in Canada during this performance, but I feel blessed now to live in the city where the brilliant T. Brinda once performed. 🙏🏼 Thank you for finding and posting this wonderful gem!

    A lovely upload! Many thanks for sharing this gem with us all. I notice that the description attributes the Varnam in Sri Ragam to Pallavi Gopala (I assume you refer to Pallavi Gopala Iyer). However I've heard a Varnam 'Sami Ninne Kori' with an extremely similar melodic setup, with the Sahityam featuring the Ankitanamam 'Garbhapuri', suggesting that it was composed by Karoor Devudayya (Chinna Devudu Krishnaiah) and Karoor Dakshinamurthy Sastri.
    So does there exist another Varnam by Pallavi Gopala Iyer with the same melodic setup?

      The labelling was done by the university (presumably with the advice of T Brinda). However, any telugu padam was referred to as “Kshetrayya padam” by the family. So that being said, it is not a good source either.

    Simply exquisite. Veena Dhanammal's family of hereditary temple musicians were simply incomparable. It would be so nice to have the lyrics for the opening viruttam, if someone could manage it.

      Brindamma does not sing a viruttam in this, she sings a brief alapana before the first track "Meru Samana"

      @amycatlin-jairazbhoy4578 Před 2 lety +2

      @@shreeraam_22 of course you are correct, there are no lyrics in the opening alapanam. Brindamma sings a lovely, relaxed, delicate Mayamalavagaula alapanam before Tyagaraja's kriti "Meru Samana."
