I loved what he said "it's a spiritual instrument; it goes from heart, to head, to hand, and comes out the amps. And, you know that directly affects a lot of the people that listen to your music". That it does Mr. Pike, that it does.
High On Fire is the only opening band I've ever seen that made a big enough impact that I became a huge fan. Saw them open for Meshuggah once, and I've never been the same.
Same shit happened to me. I’ve never been into metal much but saw HoF at the fun fun fun fest and the first song in I was like “ damn these dudes are sick”. 12 years later still love them. I can’t think of any other band I discovered live that I really kept up with over the years.
Every time I stand in front of this band as they melt my face, the fact that I don't vote like they do is irrelevant. All praise for the Snow Giant Matt Pike!
Matt, jeff and des are all cool dudes met them last year at a Detroit show. Hof are one of the most under rated metal bands out there! True musicians there about the music and the bad ass riffs!
I met Matt Pike in London,Ontario,Canada about 7-8yrs ago & they were the headliner & Skeletonwitch & Priestess opened. I got to meet Matt & bassist Jeff Matz after the show & they were just really down to earth guys, Matt Pike I remember had a bad cold & was hurting pretty good but was still very inviting & talkative.HOF & Sleep are so underrated.
Yup that’s the reason I tune to 432 the shapes are solid while 440 will break the shapes and you are listening to shards for your ear drum. ✅🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫🌫
Please interview Kenny Hickey of Type O Negative,Seventh Void & now Silvertomb. Or Johnny Kelly who is always a great guy to interview, that guy is always smiling & a happy go lucky guy. Johnny has played with & is in so many bands such as Type O Negative,Danzig,A Pale Horse Named Death,Seventh Void,Seven Witches,Silvertomb,Kill Devil Hill,Earls Court. Type O keyboardist Josh Silver who is an MET in New York now doesn't do interviews anymore & I heard that straight from Josh's mouth.
That last set, 8:38. That has to be Exit/In Nashville. Stage right gives it away because you go up the same backstage stairs, where all that shit is stuck to the wall, to get to the bathroom. Not sure if this is when they played with Crowbar, but if it is... I was drunk.
Been a High on Fire fan since the re-release of Art of Self-Defense, around 2002 I think. They peaked with Death is this Communion in my opinion, greatest live shit Ive heard was Baghdad in Sthlm 2007, my favorite. Ridiculous. Matt Pike got a mouth full of a thousand teeth and since he's sobered up he looks even more like Lemmy and would probably make the shrapnels thats left of Motörhead better. They live on sponsoring internet casino's and shit now but Mikkey and the guitarist are good musicians so they could do with a final Motörhead club tour with Matt Pike as a less dead Lemmy.
More Hz = higher pitch. It gets pretty complicated, but standard guitar tuning is E standard at 440 Hz, 440 being the standard for all instruments so that they can play together in tune. This came about in the 1800's or so, before then it would vary from place to place, so a lot of classical music is not 440. All you really need to know is that some tuners have the option to change it from 440 to something else, and that 432 is more or less a quarter step down in tuning, like half a semitone. I don't know about vibrations of the universe, but my favourite tuning these days is D standard at 432 Hz, I just like the sound of it.
When you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates at a certain frequency, higher frequency = higher pitch. A=440 Hz is a reference point for tuning, it's the agreed upon standard for all instruments. So Standard tuning for a guitar is EADGBE at 440 Hz. If you tune it to EADGBE at 432 Hz (A=432 Hz), it'll be slightly flat from regular E standard. It's more or less a quarter step down (half a fret). Matt plays in C standard I think, so at 432, that's 2 1/4 steps down from your conventional E standard guitar tuning.
Hey guess what, politics are shit, both sides. What to take away, listen to music and think for yourself, but most importantly be nice, you'll go a long way, and probably get a girl or two. 🤘
We need more musicians like this.. these guys are a dying breed
High On Fire is to me one of the utmost important metal bands out there right now.
they're definitely carrying the banner
"right now"...AND the 10 years prior. Pike, Kensel, and Matz are some kind of Holy Trinity.
Mastodon met at a High on Fire concert. so yeah, definitely important
Best rock Ive heard in this millennium. I cant think of any others who can compete.

Matt pike has the coolest voice ever!!!
A "the sound and the story" with Matt Pike would be totally awesome. Make it happen, Fret12!

For me that was Gojira on their first U.S. tour when they were the opening act on a Lamb of God tour with Machine Head and Trivium supporting.

Mastodon for me in 08. They were opening for Disturbed and Slipknot. They’re now one of my all time favourites!!
It goes from heart, to head, to hand. Super deep & very true.
Been listening to Pike's music since 2001 or 2002, love the man. Great interview.
Matt may be the quintessential Riff Lord of the Universe.
Every time I stand in front of this band as they melt my face, the fact that I don't vote like they do is irrelevant. All praise for the Snow Giant Matt Pike!

Matt PIke is the most genuine fucking cool guy out there
Been a High on Fire fan since the re-release of Art of Self-Defense, around 2002 I think. what? and he would just sing? I really don't see him picking up bass, I mean he plays very elbow-ish, but he's a guitar guy
@@sonicbong8045 Dude if you can play the guitar you can play the bass.
I have been into them since the Hung Drawn And Quartered.
Yeah!
IV just discovered a new band
Please Matt pike and fret 12 do the instructional video...i need it
"we started tuning to 432"
ok for us who are not THAT musically inclined, can you please translate that to note?
Billy Alarie Google A = 432hz
More Hz = higher pitch. It gets pretty complicated, but standard guitar tuning is E standard at 440 Hz, 440 being the standard for all instruments so that they can play together in tune. Toxic Potato true about the conspiracy stuff but I’d argue that 432 is better because lower is almost always better.
When the A is tuned to 420 hz, it will be perfectly tuned a half step down like Hendrix,Kiss, Thin Lizzy, post Ozzy Sabbath with Dio and Vanhalen.
The only thing that sucks about this interview is the shit editing, with a ton of repeat edits, (which of course was not Matt or Jeff's faults...)
All you really need is Sabbath and Zeppelin. You heard it here first folks.
I started with a pointy red Charvel bass
what guitar tuning does he mean when he says 432 hz
willr455 "A" I believe
When you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates at a certain frequency, higher frequency = higher pitch. A=440 Hz is a reference point for tuning, it's the agreed upon standard for all instruments. Acdc uses it on their let there be rock album for example
wasn't that a pic of the pentagram lead singer ?
oh shit, my like was number 666, HAIL SATAN!!!!
Never clicked out of a video so fast
DUNABLE!
does anyone know the name of the song at 5:22?
Devilution
Lol Jeff used to be/looked like a Scrawny dude and now he's all Buff! It's probably all the finger style Metal Bass playing! \m/
Otero Vidal playing with High On Fire will do that to you. I’m trying to bulk up, maybe I should jam High On Fire tunes on my guitar on a daily basis.
6 years later I wonder how these guys feel about trump now
@ 6:05 you know... metaphor
Great interview, but the sound editing really sucked, the background music is just way too loud.
whoever edited this. why would you put that music in the background? impossible to listen.
I thought he said breathing medication , LOL.. My mind is a terrible thing. Waste it.
wow middle fingers at a building that must be really hard and risky to do
chill out bra
Hey guess what, politics are shit, both sides. What to take away, listen to music and think for yourself, but most importantly be nice, you'll go a long way, and probably get a girl or two. 🤘
Flipping off Trump tower is like soooo edgy
